Malaysia Government Lets Christians Print Malay Bibles

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government said it would allow Malay-language Bibles to be printed locally, in a major concession to the country’s minority Christian community to soothe anger over seized shipments of their holy books.
The government’s announcement late Saturday comes ahead of an April 16 election in Sarawak state on Borneo island, where Christians account for more than 40 percent of the population. The poll is seen as a crucial barometer of support for Muslim-majority Malaysia’s ruling coalition that may determine whether it will call early general elections.
Christians have been angered over the seizures of tens of thousands of imported Malay-language Bibles by Malaysian customs authorities, some since 2009.
The seized Bibles violate a government ban on non-Muslim texts that use the word “Allah” as a translation for God amid concern it could confuse Muslims or be used to convert them. Malaysian Christians say the ban is unfair because the Arabic word is a common reference for God that predates Islam.
Idris Jala, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said in a statement that Bibles in all languages, including Malay, can now be printed locally. The move extends an olive branch to Christians, who previously had to import Malay-language Bibles from Indonesia.
Jala pledged there would be no restrictions on Malay-language Bibles in Sabah and Sarawak states on Borneo, where there are large Christian communities.
However, he said books that are imported or printed in peninsula Malaysia must carry the words “Christian publication” and the sign of the cross on its front cover, in a move likely made to appease the country’s Muslim community.
The Christian Federation of Malaysia, which represents most of the country’s churches, said Sunday that church leaders will meet next week to discuss the government’s offer.
One of the Christian Federation’s leaders, the Rev. Hermen Shastri, said the proposal did not address the group’s call to revoke a long-standing government order that deems the Malay-language Bible a threat to national security.
“The fact that the government is maintaining that position is a denial of our rights because the Bible is our holy book that enlightens people and not a threat to security,” he told The Associated Press.
It is unclear how the move would affect an ongoing court case on whether non-Muslims have the constitutional right to use the word “Allah.”
The government is appealing a December 2009 court ruling that religious minorities have the right to use “Allah.” The verdict caused a brief surge in tensions last year, when 11 churches were attacked amid anger among some Muslims.
Muslims comprise nearly two-thirds of Malaysia’s 28 million people, while Christians are about 10 percent.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 9:59pmAfter reading the posts above, I can only say; I wish the “church” would teach the Bible. Too many people are leaving the church with good feelings about God, but they never knew God. Don’t be deceived. So many of you are really confused about what the Bible does say concerning His return, prophetic books interpretation, especially in Revelation, and even concerning Salvation. My prayer FIRST is that you ALL know Jesus as YOUR PERSONAL Savior. HE IS the ONLY way John 14:6. If you have concerns about YOUR Salvation, read Romans 10:9-13 and just call upon Him to come into YOUR heart today and get those concerns settled. I read “nice” comments that make sense, but have NO scriptural basis. While we are a people chosen by God, before the foundation of the world; and we should all love one another. We MUST learn to quote the Bible in context, NOT taking what it says in various places out-of-context just to make your point. I am happy that I am counted among “the Bride” of “the Bridegroom”. Thank God the “Father” for that distinction. Rev 21:2 “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared – - – -as- – - – a bride adorned for her husband.“ The word ”as“ makes it clear that is figurative language that describes what we are ”Like a Bride” to Jesus, the Bridegroom. I will never have to worry about my Salvation, because I am sealed by the Holy Spirit, God the Father and the Son. I am waiting till that day, when the Bridegroom calls me into His presence. Praise Him; He is ALL that really matters.
My personal thoughts about this article reflect some of you; I believe that many will be made martyrs by allowing a corrupt government to know where you live when you take the Christian Bible from them. May God Bless you, you may beat me to Heaven, but I am SURE you will be in perfect peace for eternity once you get there. This life has little to offer except the joy that comes from leading the lost to Christ. We ALL must be about His work.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 8:33pmWhat a difference in the responses between the two religions when their holy books are burned! One Koran is burned by a lunatic in Florida and by the end of the week the Muslims far away go on a murderous rampage to get even. Yet, in 2009, after “tens of thousands” of Bibles were seized by the Malaysian government (and I assume they weren’t stored lovingly on a shelf somewhere), I don’t remember hearing about Christians committing revenge killings ~ didn’t even know about it until now. I’m proud to be a Christian.

They will everything in their power to make sure only muslims remain. Indonesia and Malaysia have laws putting muslims on a higher social standard than non muslims, which are persecuted daily.
I dream of the day when Islam is nothing but a bad memory, destroyed by true enlightenment and peace. Until then, it will always be the enemy of all that is good in the world.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 7:34pmOnce upon a time – Christianity was the same way. and it still is not a religion of peace – much as many tout it to be. Muslims BELIEVE their book, their prophet, and they follow their belief. Christians say peace, peace, and then I see that many of you would really do to them what they do to you. You are no more willing to let them be than they are willing to let you be.
From all I can see, Christians are as divisive and bad mouth each others personal beliefs as much as different Muslim sects. They persecute each other mercilessly. IF, and it’s a huge if, the “West” did not corrupt their people and their beliefs we wouldn’t be having this war of terror, maybe. We think nothing of insulting them, their God, their Prophet, their religion and we are taken aback when they retaliate. To show that Christians don’t care about their religion – just look at the story here on the Blaze with Palin crucified in an art show, or a crucifix in a jar of piss for art. America is a “Christian” nation – then tell me how all those homosexuals got elected and get re-elected. Christianity has no balls, apparently.

My Salvation is the debt I can never repay. My best works are but filthy rags before the Lord. The only place I might dare speak to the Almighty is because He lets me; He is willing to hear my supplications.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 5:25pmtexanpatriot: You say that we are the Bride of Christ. That is a false teaching in the Church, which they continue to teach. Is the Scripture wrong then when John writes in Revelation that he was shown the BRIDE OF CHRIST…referring to New Jerusalem?
Report Post »Revelation 21: 1 – 14 tells us about Christ’s Bride. We read: Then I (the Apostle John writing) saw A NEW HEAVEN and A NEW EARTH for the FIRST HEAVEN and the FIRST EARTH HAD PASSED AWAY, and there was NO LONGER ANY SEA. I saw THE HOLY CITY, the NEW JERUSALEM, coming down OUT OF HEAVEN FROM GOD, PREPARED AS A BRIDE beautifully dressed for HER HUSBAND. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now THE DWELLING OF GOD IS WITH MEN, and he will LIVE WITH THEM. They will be HIS PEOPLE, and GOD himself will be with them and BE THEIR GOD. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the OLD ORDER OF THINGS HAS PASSED AWAY. He who was seated on the throne said, I am MAKING EVERYTHING NEW! Then he said, Write this down, FOR THESE WORDS ARE TRUSTWORTHY AND TRUE. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who OVERCOMES will inherit all this, and I will be HIS GOD, and HE WILL BE MY SON. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be IN THE FIERY LAKE OF BURNING SULFUR (which is HELL). This is the second death. ONE OF THE SEVEN ANGELS who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, COME, I WILL SHOW YOU THE BRIDE, THE WIFE OF THE LAMB (the Lamb being Jesus Christ). And he carried me away in the (Holy) Spirit to a mountain great and high, and SHOWED ME THE HOLY CITY, JERUSALEM, COMING DOWN OUT OF HEAVEN FROM GOD. It shone with THE GLORY OF GOD, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with TWELVE GATES, and with TWELVE ANGELS at the gates. On the gates were written the NAMES OF THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL (see how important the tribes of Israel were, are, and will be). There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of THE CITY (the NEW JERUSALEM) had TWELVE FOUNDATIONS, and on them were THE NAMES OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES of the Lamb.
Galatians 4: 21 – 31 tells us more about this JERUSALEM that is above (in heaven). We read: Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons (Ishmael and Isaac), one by the slave woman (Ishmael; Saudi Arabia, the birth of Islam) and the other by the free woman (Isaac, the father of Jacob, the father of the 12 tribes of Israel) . His son of the slave woman (Hagar the Egyptian, the mother of Ishmael) was born in the ordinary way; but his son (Isaac) by the free woman (Sarah) was born as THE RESULT OF PROMISE. These things may be taken figuratively, for the women (Hagar and Sarah) REPRESENT TWO COVENANTS. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds TO THE PRESENT CITY OF JERUSALEM, because she is in slavery with her children. BUT THE JERUSALEM THAT IS ABOVE IS FREE, and SHE IS OUR MOTHER (The New Jerusalem which will come down out of heaven, which will be THE BRIDE OF JESUS CHRIST). For it is written: Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband. Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are CHILDREN OF PROMISE. At that time the son born in the ordinary way (Ishmael; Saudi Arabia the birth of Islam) PERSECUTED THE SON BORN BY THE POWER OF THE (Holy) SPIRIT. It is the same now. But what does the Scripture say? Get rid of the slave woman (Hagar) and her son (Ishmael), for the slave woman‘s son WILL NEVER SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE WITH THE FREE WOMAN’S (Sarah) SON (Isaac). Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman (Hagar), but of the FREE WOMAN (Sarah).
Jesus Christ’s BRIDE will be the NEW JERUSALEM which will come down out of heaven, and SHE IS OUR MOTHER. The Church IS NOT the Bride of Christ; period. The Scripture NEVER tells us that the Church will be Christ’s bride. The Bible does not contradict itself. That is why JERUSALEM is SO IMPORTANT TO THE ISRAELITES…because if the New Jerusalem is OUR MOTHER, then the Old Jerusalem is also OUR MOTHER.

I heard our preacher today ask, “Are we living on tiptoes with our arms and hands outstretched reaching upward toward GOD like we are eager to touch HIM, to praise HIM, to love HIM, or do we cower in fear?”
Then, he challenged us to live this week so that people would say, “What’s with those people walking on tiptoe, reaching up?” The image is precious. What a difference that would make.
Yes, I know, the horrible left would have us bound and locked away. Well, maybe even some of our own “brothers and sisters” in the faith would as well…. *sigh*

I don’t see this as much of a trap, really, since those fellow Christians are known over there. Overall, though, I do see your point; I don’t trust Moslems, either.
Maybe this is another way the Almighty kicks in His sense of irony. And I believe He has one, better than all of Mankind could collectively ever pull off. This might be a small awakening, in a little-heard-of part of the world instead of the ‘big’ places like Saudi Arabia. I’m reminded of the story of the prophet (I forget his name, I’m bad with them), who was told the Lord was going to pass by. Then came the storm, and the Lord shielded that prophet’s eyes. Then came the quiet.
The Lord Himself wasn’t the storm, but rather the quiet.
Again, I mistrust Moslems and truly expect violence to result somewhere in the world over this–inflicted by Moslems.. But I also think this is a great opportunity here.
The Lord never misses, especially if our prayers never cease.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 12:02pmOK, linguistic pre-emptive first-strike –oh, sorry for the violent language. Whenever this general topic comes up, someone always has to make the assertion that the word or name “Allah” is actually the name of some pre-Islamic moon god or some such. That may or may not be true. What is true, though, is that no matter how you slice it, the Arabic word “Allah” does indeed translate as “God” in English. I belong to one of the Eastern Orthodox churches which has Arabic roots, parts of the service are in Arabic, and “Allah” is indeed used frequently — along with the Arabic words for “Father”, “Son”, and “Holy Spirit.”
Etymologically, “Allah” derives from the same root words as the Hebrew “El” and the Aramaic “Eli” — the very name Christ uttered on the Cross. Alleging it is the name of a pagan deity is not only wrong, it is close to blasphemy. After all, the ancient Hebrew name “YHWH”, variously rendered as “Yahweh” or “Jehovah” is suspiciously similar to the Roman name “Iove” or “Giove” — “Jove” in English — another name for the god “Jupiter.”
Hope that’s clear.

GOD is GOD. Humans can not understand HIM nor HIS ways. We can only attempt to follow HIS will by the Path we each understand best. There should be no arguments between religions. There should only be exchanges of ideas to try to better understand the Divine.

This is interesting — from Wikipedia:
Malaya was restructured as the Federation of Malaya in 1948, and achieved independence on 31 August 1957. Malaya united with Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore to form Malaysia on 16 September 1963. However, less than two years later in 1965, Singapore withdrew from the federation, and became an independent city state. Since independence, Malaysia has had one of the best economic records in Asia, with GDP growing an average 6.5% for almost 50 years. The economy has traditionally been fuelled by its natural resources, but is now expanding in the sectors of science, tourism, commerce and medical tourism.
