Malicious Email Downloads ‘Drive-by Virus’ Just by Clicking Open

In the good ol’ days, one had to actually be duped into opening the attachment — or clicking the link — of a virus-infected email. Now, a new type of PC virus comes without warning.

This is the subject line you need to watch out for: Banking Security Update

The Daily Mail explains how the virus works:

A new class of cyber attack is threatening PCs — emails which infect PCs without the user having to open an attachment.

The user will not even be warned this is happening — the only message that appears is “loading.”

The email automatically downloads malicious software into your computer from elsewhere the moment a user clicks to open it.

Think your security system will catch the email? Chances are probably not — unless you have your security software set at maximum level. The Daily Mail reports that because the email itself isn’t necessarily infected, many security systems will not pick up on it. Security experts were reported as saying the virus is “particularly dangerous.”

Eleven Research Team states that the new virus is called a “drive-by virus,” consisting of an HTML email that only requires the user to open the mail.

I got a pop up from zedo.com from this site.It was actually a pop under. So those who say you’ve been hit with a pop up from here ,I know you are telling the truth.Folks hackers and thieves will use any work around they can find.Be it online or in the real world.Your best bet don‘t open email from those you don’t know.Get a second email account for those sites that may be questionable be it ad-ware malware exc.If you can‘t check the source without opening the mail don’t use the email client.Keep your antivirus antiadware/malware up to date.Set it to include your email if it allows it.Use your emails client reject[spam folder]liberally.Have a seperate computer for financial transaction if you can swing it.Don’t bank on line unless you truly have cause to.Use a preset amount card or a gift card not connected with your account for online transactions.Any phishing attempt from a bank should be directed to the banks abuse dept.If you need to, go out online and find it.Send the email to them.Preferably without opening.Although that isn’t always possible.Masquerading as a legitimate transaction is one of their tricks. You may have a account at that bank or even inquired recently about services products the bank has as a prospective customer.

NEVER open emails from anyone you do not know. Hit DELETE! My hubby is a computer geek and always told me that. EVEN if you get a small box pop up that looks like your Microsoft virus protector DO NOT CLICK IT TO SEARCH FOR VIRUSES!!!! I did this the other day :-* and my hubby had a very hard time getting rid of the virus ( it looks just like the real virus protection box). It actually TURNS OFF your virus protection software in your computer!!!!

You’d be surprised at all the junk links in your everyday email. By the way, if HTML is on, then every time you open your emails, ….THEY KNOW.

I agree, HTML formatted email is evil.

The default in Apple’s Mail.app for Preferences -> Viewing -> “Display remote images in HTML messages” is off. Unless this is enabled the sender can not track you until you click “Display Images” when viewing the email.

There are plenty of other email evils such as “top-post, no trim” replies. Just because the idiots at Microsoft (and later Apple) put the cursor at the top of the email when starting a reply doesn’t mean that is where you are supposed to start typing. That is where you are supposed to start EDITING. However brain-dead Outlook won’t let you trim the other text, or insert your reply text where others spoke prompting your reply.

There is no need for what you describe. Simply use a plain-text email client and refuse HTML.

If one were to automatically bounce spam/virus emails back to the sender then that would only prove to the sender 1) that they have found a live email address, and 2) the email they sent didn’t get through, so 3) keep trying until the returns stop as then you know you are getting through. So what you suggest only harms *you*.

Rational Man: ” But Norton kills them.”

Not always. Nor McAffe for that mater. There was a hole in it that allowed slipping through via raw sockets and getting passwords to email account without even phishing. It’s plugged now, but a lot of people got their window boxes zombified.

I use linux as a bare metal OS (meaning primary). Since I have to use different windows versions for testing, I use vmware to run them on top (or from within as it were) of linux. I clone the virtual windows machines before every major update, so if something goes wrong, I just ditch the messed up VM and use a clone. This is an ideal configuration, well worth the $99 I paid for vmware layer.

    BULL SNOT! Plain and simple.

    1. Has this ‘discovery’ appeared in ANY peer-reviewed computer science journal? If so, a link to that article would be nice.

    2. Where can I get a copy of this email for inspection? If it exists then certainly someone somewhere has it available for download (as a plain text file).

    3. “The email automatically downloads malicious software into your computer from elsewhere…” — Where does this magic mystery attachment come from? A domain name would be great! A country of origin would be awesome too – and can be derived from the IP Address associated with the domain name.

    4. “Security experts say…” Do these experts have names?

So, in summary: “Eleven Research Team (people you’ve never heard of) says to go BUY more software. Your computer is a piece of junk until you dig deeper into those pockets!!”

Someone has hijacked your daughter’s email. Tell her to try changing her password. It happened to me and changing the PW seems to have fixed it. They get your PW through a phishing page that asks for your PW. It looks like your email site page and asks you to re-enter your PW, but it is a false page. Once they get your PW, then they send out spam emails, (from your email), to everyone on your contact list. It happened to my daughter too early last year or the year before. She did nothing but get a new email. I and everyone on her old contact list, STILL, get the spam emails in her name.
Now if I get a request to re-enter my PW, I close the window and go to the email site to log in again. So far, (about 4mos), no spam has been sent from my email address.

This type advertisement is allowed to those who refuse to remove all the forwarded e-mail addresses. A teaser or innocent ad can allow the sender to pick up all the addresses attached. Do yourself and your friends a favor and delete all forwarded addresses before sending on. And YES, delete before opening unknown e-mails.

I do know why they cant catch them. Heres the rub, the internet is MASSIVE. It is millions upon millions of computers connected together in a web. Lets say that each of those millions of computers is a separate haystack and the police are looking for one needle in that haystack. Now lets take it a step further, (there are hundreds of thousands of needles, which is still so few compared to all the haystacks that they are still impossible to find) and there are only one thousand police trying to stop them. Now imagine that the needles work together to cover each others backs and attack the police. Now further imagine that the programmers who become the police are the WORST of the programmers out there and the ones that become the needles are the BEST. There is no way the government could ever possibly fight internet crime. That is why the people leading the fight are corporations, becuase they can make money off of protecting people. So Google, Norton, McAfee, Microsoft, they all make money in part by doing what the government cannot, which is keeping you safe. But they can only innovate so fast, give Google a month and I bet that Gmail will be immune to this virus if it isnt already….cant say so much for AOL and MSN though. If you want to make yourself immune though do the following. a.) go to your email settings and disable the loading of external content (like pictures) without user authorization. b.) if an email looks at all fishy, even if its from a friend, dont open it

      A. Computer repair shops do not exist anymore. All that exists is the Geek Squad…they drove everyone else out of business.
      B. they do not need to send you a virus, since 99.999999% of the things people take to the Geek Squad crying “virus” are actually having a problem that was in no way caused by a virus.
      C. their @$$es would be sued to high heaven, not to mention the fact that their managers would be put in federal prison if they spread viruses just to generate business.

Matt, you are mostly right, except the part about Macs are mostly immune to viruses, that’s the bs line they sell.
Most of the world uses pc, either windows or linux based, there is a fraction that uses mac, sure, but if I were to want to create a virus to wreak havoc on as many people as possible, I would try to go after the largest percentage of computer users out there. So, I would start with linux, and work my way into windows, and then eventually I would get to the macs.
Most of the business world uses windows, so if you want to try and steal important financial information, going after windows would be a wise idea.
The idea that macs are immune to viruses, or most of them is absolutely not true, if the mac was as popular or more so than a pc, then I‘d put good money to it that they’d be the computer that always got infected.

People that run linux more often (than not) know what they are doing. You chances of infecting them are quite slim, cuz the inherent security is rather a top of the line (you can use selinux layer to make it really really hard to break in, if you are extra paranoid) and they are less likely to engage in insecure patterns.

Hosting servers–depends. They are usually less secure as a tradeoff, to accommodate site owners that would be inconvenienced with a beefed up security. I run my own server, that way I have a full control to express my inner control freak.

      @Matt:

I’m a computer guy, and I request that you please stop giving people terrible and incorrect information presented as if you are an authority.

MacOS is a version of Linux. BOTH have viruses specialized for them that would not infect a PC. Please stop telling people that Macs can’t get viruses, it’s simply wrong.

There are a few VERY simple steps that anyone, of any skill level, can take to protect themselves from the overwhelming majority of viruses out there.

      1) STOP using Internet Explorer. Use Firefox, or another alternative that doesn’t use DirectX.
      2) Download adblock plus, and Noscript(for Firefox, or alternatives for whatever browser you choose)
      3) Turn OFF html in your emails. Get all emails as text only.
      4) Do NOT download things without knowing the place where it’s coming from, and their reputation. Even if it is sent by a friend. Most of your friends will give you viruses with the “free” stuff they’re sending, because they don’t know any better than you do.

#3 stops the particular virus in this article, but the three in combination will protect you from 99.9% of viruses currently out there.

I get phishing emails that look just like the ones from my bank and credit card websites. They try to get me to log on via the link in the email, and then they would have my UN and PW to get into my accounts. If they can disguise an email to do that, then they can disguise one that you just click on to open and then you get infected with this ‘drive-by virus’.
If they can copy any website or email for phishing purposes, then this drive-by virus could be a real problem. How do you know if the email is the real deal or not?

Matt, you have no idea what you are talking about. Most viruses and trojans. etc. are created on and for windows OS.

I use linux for work and haven’t had one single infection since I started using it 9 years ago. Not to say it is not possible, but the separation of user accounts and some handy tools — that are quite the same for linux and mac (that runs on modified BSDOS, which is a unix variant as is linux), just compiled for the platform), makes it a safe platform.

You can use any OS for brute force attacks or for scripting viruses and trojans, but if you track it, you’d find out most script kiddies (or even grownups) use windows based OS.

People don‘t make viruses for macs because they don’t care about the .1% of the world that uses their mac for the paint program. If people want to get things done, they use linux, or even windows, that’s why viruses are made for those users.
To help combat the crap that’s out there, use malwarebytes, it’s a great program, as far as an anti-virus to back up with, emsisoft anti-malware, it beats most of the popular programs out there. Macs are FAR more secure. You would be right, that there arent enough of them to cause a chain reaction, because that is one part of it. But the real reason is that the Mac OS is many times harder to fool than Windows.

If we were to compare it. Lets say the operating systems were written to keep viruses out, and that the viruses are water. A Mac would be a dam built by a beaver, not perfect, might let some water through, but it does a pretty dang good job. A windows would be like trying to stop a river with a screen door.

A linux would be like holding a hose and spraying it at the water. hahahaha, because if you are using it, you are probably a computer programmer and maybe even a hacker hahaha.

Matt, hackers = white hats, crackers = black hats. Nuff said in that regard.

Now, you can use linux for any number of things, the same as other systems. For a regular Joe, just use firefox, evolution/kmail for mail, and free OpenOffice suite instead of MS office (99.8% compatibility).

Yes, many coders (hackers = white hats) use linux. But say you’re in a video production or 3d modeling. Instead of an expensive supercomputer ($30 – $120k), you build linux based Beowulf farm on cheap, cheap boxes and you can do the same for $5k. If you tried to do the same with macs, it would cost you all your limbs.

      @Matt

Okay, okay, we get it…you like Macs. However, lets see Mac get 80% of the market before we start spouting off about how “secure” it is, okay?! Yeah, when it become the big, hated, monarchy that Windows supposedly is (more like the impotent grandfather it has become), then I’ll listen. Just because no one TARGETS the Mac doesn’t mean it is inherently more secure – it just means no one feels it is worth targeting because it holds such an insignificant market share. If your goal is to gain the most data or infiltrate the largest networks – right now there’s only one target worth going after.

You suggested open office.Sorry but several of us have used that.It isn’t as safe as you seem to think.
It also has a much bigger footprint than its billed as having. You can get a little more performance with the lite version. That still is a big imprint size wise.Don’t get me wrong its a good program for those who need a full scale office suite.I actually like the layout much better than office. Its far more intuitive.
Its also partly that I’m old old school.I don’t like large bloated programs even quite functional ones.Don’t have the resources[computer wise] nor the time for them to load.

objectivetruth, meant with linux. Though, if you run KDE, there is a native office suite built into it. Gnome (I don’t use) has likely a similar set. Problem is with file formats. OO is the solution, if you need to cooperate with someone that has windoze. Naturally, my box, because I need to run several OS concurrently, has 8gb RAM, so no lack of resources. I have an older box with 2gb RAM, and it ran linux/vmware and a couple of vm machines, too, though I had to carefully assign RAM so it was acceptable speed if I ran some intense apps within vm. Both boxes run dual CPU mobo (relatively inexpensive these days if you don’t need the latest gear), the 8gb box has 2 dual core CPUs.

But I’ve built several boxes that ran on a single chip and 2gb RAM, and for most of the computing needs, they had quite a decent performance.

first thing you do is unplug your modem. if you ever have something just start downloading. pull the plug to your circuit breaker. which ever is faster don’t know how big it is might just have to kill power instantly. I only open email I invite.

If that doesn’t work, bury your PC and sacrifice a chicken. Virus’s hate birds, unless it’s the bird flu virus. Then you are hosed.

I uploaded three megabytes in mere seconds earlier. Not like the days just ten years ago where it took nearly an hour. Before your brain sends the signal to your hands and you react and pull the plug, the virus is already downloaded. Exactly how fast do you think you can move with a high speed coneection, a dou processor, and a user who doesn‘t know what’s happening until too late?
