HYDRO, Okla. (AP) — An elderly Hydro man landed in jail after springing his prized pooch from the town kennel. Instead of paying a $100 fine for not having his poodle on a leash, 73-year-old Edwin Fry decided to bust Buddy Tough out, driving his lawnmower to the city pound Oct. 13 and breaking into the cage with bolt cutters.
As the pair escaped, police officer Chris Chancellor intercepted them.
Chancellor told The Oklahoman officers had received numerous complaints about Buddy Tough, who had been in the pound before. He said Fry had been told he could retrieve the dog and sort out the fine in court.
“I’ve been in law enforcement 20 years, and this is the first time I’ve known of anyone that has busted a dog out of jail,” Chancellor told The Oklahoman.
Fry spent several days in jail, and faces a municipal charge of allowing an animal to run at-large.
Fry didn’t deny the charges. He told The Oklahoman that he warned police to stay away from his dog unless they wanted to face his shotgun.
As for Buddy Tough, he was euthanized while Fry was in jail.

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 6:15pmThis case is typically tragic. The old man had warned the police about himself by threatening to kill them over the dog. He should have been evaluated for a psychiatric problems and gotten some help with his animals. The case was unecessarily escalated by the authorities. The police will now probably have to kill this man over the incident dur to his threats. Where I live they will make an arrest for dog fighting and keep the dogs for months as evidence and then kill them. They spend tax payer dollars to get these animals back to health and then destroy them. Madness!!

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 6:26pmWHAT?!? You think now they would kill a 73 year old man over his views on how to treat a dog?? Ur not serious are you?? This man doesn’t own a dog fighting ring, his crime is that he let his dog (a poodle at that) roam free.
Well nowa days IF you have enough money and you run a dog fighting ring you get a free ride in jail then given your job back and everybody forgets it happened….

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 6:12pmOf course, one never knows the full story, but it appears to be very sad that they felt a need to euthanize his pet. Animals due tend to pick up on characteristics and personalities of their owner. Obviously, he either loved that dog a great deal or some other problem sent this man over the edge. This story is particularly poignant for me today as my beauty-girl, Sage, a German Shepard and 14 years old required euthanasia yesterday due to age and other infirmities of age. I am still crying even though she depended on me to make these hard decisions. As the vet said ‘that is your unselfish gift to her for all the unconditional love she gave you through the years.’ And so, I will wait for the ‘rainbow bridge’ where we meet again. Forgive this sadness in such a public arena of expression. thank you

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 6:10pmThey killed the dog??
I wouldn’t be shocked to see that his new pet will be a RABEE infested 717 lb. Endangered Hippo in which you can’t just put down without proper paperwork and a few months in courts. Its name, of course, would be Monte Cristo! What a bunch of intolerant idiots and (for the record) a stubborn owner.
In all seriousness this was the wrong outcome. Should have gave the dog a bigger yard (with a fence) to play in or put the dog on a farm somewhere. Then take his doggie and put it down. He obiviously loved his dog or he would not have gone through the trouble to break it out of the sling.

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 9:49pmWake up people. If that dog had bit anyone or even come close, that cop would have said so! This is purely a case of abuse of power. Tell me that cop was really afraid for his life from a 73 year old riding his tractor down the road with his little poodle. He could have just let him go home, and they could have followed up with the civil side of any fines, leash laws, etc. Do NOT assume that because the government did something, there must be more to it. Yeah, the old guy threatened them…not sure how credible the threat was… he admits it in the video…maybe more along the lines, of mess with me and my dog, you’ll pay…again, based on what we know, it’s overreaction. Even if there is more, none of the more justifies killing the dog while the old man is in jail!

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 6:00pmCatb, I gotta tell you, I have always HATE the term “put down” & I wish we would drop it from our vocabulary. Call it euthanasia or, in this instance, murder or killing. It‘s such a derogatory term as it implies that an animal has little worth that they don’t even qualify to be euthanized, but, rather “put down.” Well, we are all God’s creatures. I vaguely recall that I recently read something of a religious nature wherein it said that animals also have souls. There was no reason that this dog had to be killed. It’s apparent that this elderly man (who rides a tracker to get where he’s going, for goodness’ sake) loved this dog & the dog didn’t have to be deprived of his life.

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 8:20pmYou don’t know … many animals that are uncared for .. have heartworms to the point of slow death etc,. I doubt that the dog was “socialized” as the man doesn’t seem to be … I am a BIG animal lover and doubt that they would put the dog down (kill it you like that better?) without a good reason … even if I don’t know what it is. I am tired of people who don’t take care of their animals getting a pass and letting them be out of control ..I know this was a poodle but how many attacks of “bad” dogs have occured upon innocent children and adults running lose … I have had it with excuses!

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 8:39pm@catb hmm must be a cat lover…… innocent children. really, what did the kid to to taunt the dog in those cases huh. my parents always taught me that you never tease a dog casue they remember the sound of your voice and then one day when thier lose they remind you of the time you were teasing them and “teases you back”
rarely if ever is the child or adult innocent.
There are many options for this dog before euthanizing him. how about all of the greyhounds that this happens to.. drush36@embarqmail.com …i’m sure you feel like they deserve it too.

Posted on October 24, 2010 at 9:08pmKoolaid, I agree with you about the greyhounds this is a dispicable practice that has to stop. Let me tell you a story. One night on halloween I was taking my three year old trick or treating, my baby had a flashlight as our neighborhood is pretty dark. One of the houses had a bunch of guys in the garage and a loose dog; I saw the dog and saw the men were drinking so I crossed the street to avoid them. The dog, a doberman, came tearing across the street. I picked up my child and held him close to me with the dog biting at the back of my shoulders while the men laughed and said the dog hated flashlights. Tell me, what did my three year old do that he deserved to be attacked?

As far as we know the dog was biting little kids or attacking other peoples dogs. There is not enough info to start jumping up and down screaming murder. My dogs have escaped the yard and taken to the pound where they called me (the pound, not the dogs) and I went to bail them out, we have leash laws . All this guy had to do is respect his neighbors by taking care of his dogs and acting responsibly and the dog would be fine.
