Tay Zonday is the man with the chocolate-smooth voice behind the perplexing viral hit “Chocolate Rain.” The catchy song made Zonday a YouTube sensation. And now, he’s back with another song not about confectioneries but about the economy. You read that right — and get ready for another viral sensation.
The calls the song “an anthem for the 99 percent,“ explaining that it touches ”upon neoliberalism, market socialism, the ‘Ph.Ds and the G.E.D.s‘ who ’cry with Ayn Rand down at the temp agency,’ wage stagnation, and many other issues that the Occupy Wall Streeters have been talking about.”
The song doesn’t specifically mention the Occupy movement, but it does seem to parrot some of the Occupiers rhetoric. If you’re ready for it, you can listen below:
And in case you‘ve never heard Zonday’s original hit “Chocolate Rain,” you can take it all in below:

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 11:11amYou know, a lot of you are slamming this guy. True the music is not the greatest, but he does bring up good points. However, he has a narrow view that does not answer all the questions about the economy. Though he is much closer than we all may think.
1) The economy has been running on debt. Instead of paying things as we can afford them, Americans have bend placing leverage on future earnings in hopes to buy consumer goods. These goods are made with a built expectation to break after a determined amount of time.
2) The wages have flat-lined; but this has multiple issues. Mainly the issue is things like equal pay for equal work http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/equal-pay-act-women-30153.html. Companies are unable to pay based on merit under these terms. Any one person that gets a raise would directly result in everyone getting a raise. While many people feel they can have a merit raise, it opens the employer to being sued for violation of the Equal Pay Act. Having more duties or being better skilled does not protect one on a merit raise (which is why many companies make it a terminable offense in discussing wages).
3) I will take some hits on this one, but it is 100% true. Duel income families have directly related to the increasing cost on the cost of living. This has gotten so bad that single parents are having the most difficult time surviving in this economy and leads to more and more social programs.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 11:39amRemember, price run on supply and demand. Demand is pretty much set on the money available to a consumer. Many families became duel income homes so they could afford that BMW, Mercedes, that $200,000 home, the 65″ flat screen, etc, etc, etc. Two working parents made it easy, and so does credit cards. The two combined raised prices more and more, as families all of a sudden were able to afford high ticket items. Meanwhile, the single parent and singles were left fighting to keep up with the status quo. I remember 15 years ago when $40,000 was a comfortable wage for a single. Now it is closer to $60,000. This is due to two $30,000 parents effectively have the purchasing power of $60,000.
It is hard for many who benefited from having a duel income family to see the problem. This is due to the ability being allowed and the massive benefits. However, the single parents and singles are at a significant disadvantage with the wide adoption of the duel income model amongst most American homes. This will force most households to rely on one person working two jobs, or both units working. Which also causes an issue for a duel income family when one unit losses their job, they suddenly cannot afford the lifestyle – but this is because their behavior mandates that both have to work and the widespread adoption makes it so as well.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 1:10pmI started making note this weekend on how many advertisements on TV, include or begin with “Instant Credit” or Take 3 years to pay, or no payments until 2015. I can tell you, what I saw was frightening!!
No one is advertising why their product is the right one to buy, they all advertise using credit to pay for it. I come from a long line of credit “avoiders”. We used credit to buy our home. Pretty much everything else we pay cash for.
Report Post »If Americans got back to paying cash, think of the influx of cash into our fake money system! You want a mattress, here’s my cash. You need a new couch, here’s my cash.
Things that people NEVER financed in the past are now routinely purchased on credit. If we could get this to stop, prices would go down or people would demand better pay. Either one is a good deal for the consumer.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 9:27pmWell said JOHNNYMIDKNIGHT I had this same conversion with a co-worker the other day. But then he tried to blame it on GOD because the old testament said that the woman is to be submissive and basically stay home, but for him that was not possible after loosing his job with Discover Card ( that greedy money lender) but he was able to do so prior to losing his Discover Card job.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 10:54amOkay, so I didn’t want to listen to the “new” song because I could care a less what the guy thinks (politically). However, I had never heard “Chocolate Rain” before, and since the write-up made it sound light and fun, I listened. I’m not sure exactly how a song making fraudulent claims about racism today, and comparing it exactly to the slavery of centuries before…how this could possibly be light and fun or about confectioneries. Has anyone actually LISTENED to the lyrics he sings in “Chocolate Rain”? They are quite radical. “More than marching, more than passing law…”

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 4:58pmThe first video drew the audience that they needed for the second video. You have to listen to both to understand their purpose. The second video was done to give the OWS the validity for their movement without the harhness or the racist propaganda that was included in the first. Like most of you I thought the second one made was not that far off with the comments until I listened to the original one and realized the intent behind it. These are directed towards the younger brainwashed and indoctrinated people that will be encouraged to vote in favor of the progressives. Just yet another ploy on behalf of the extremist movement to shut down our government and bring socialism on to replace our freedom.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 10:18pmHis Internet “fame” is based on how terrible the song is, his odd voice, and his idiosyncrasies such as turning away from the mic to breathe. Chocolate Rain is an outdated meme, and not much more.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 10:14amRegardless of what anyone’s opinion is of the musical quality, I don’t hear much in the lyrics to be upset about. Most of the lyrics criticize the fact that the dollar is a fiat currency not backed by any real-valued commodity, that the Federal Reserve–a private entity–controls the country’s legal currency, creates money out of thin air and sells it to banks thereby encouraging (or coercing) them to make loans that they wouldn’t ordinarily make, and that Congress engages in crony capitalism. Who here has a problem with that?

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 9:19amI gotta admit, I liked the ‘Economy’ song.. Catchy tune, and good to see someone taking on something more than your average pop song bologna. For all the knee-jerk conservatives out there who don’t think beyond first impressions, give it a chance. Talking about corporations living and dying off of consumer debt is not a ‘socialist’ perspective. We know that Dems are the big supporters of Wall Street at this point.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 2:26pmYou’re playing it off like Libertarians and Conservatives support Wallstreet. Most of us don’t. Granted being able to invest into your own company, and have other people invest their money without having to through presentations to bring in cashflow to increase both value of the company and reserves is fantastic, but what we know as Wallstreet is not the same entity it was. It does not follow the market as it used to, most of it is speculation, or large investments that sit and wait out government payouts or invest based on changes to tax laws that benefit one or another industry. This allows gaming the market, and playing it based on fixed rules, which is counter to capitolism, which runs strictly on market based forces.
Yes, there are bad corporations that take advantage, yes the fed fudges up our system, inflating dollar values in part by printing money and encouraging investment on these newly printed, backed-by-nothing currency, but there are many other factors involved, such as government taking cash from lobby groups, or donations, or as we’re slowly finding out (though it’s rather obvious) investment opportunities taking advantage of government laws that help benefit one or another business, bank, investment firm, etc (aka insider trading). Then creating regulations that cripple small businesses yet do not hurt the large established corporations, which even if they did due to real market fluctuations, the government would simply bail them out…

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 9:11amThere’s so much being conveyed in these two songs. While most of the posts are negative, I’d be willing to bet few of you have ever tried to write a song, let alone spend the years this guy did learning to play & sing passably. Merit is due for the hard work alone. It’s not top 40, it’s not top 100K, but it does represent a lot of work. The lyrics make you question where this guy is coming from, and weather anything he is saying adds something to the mix. You don’t have to like the politics, or style but I know from personal experience that he worked his tail off to produce these on a shoestring. He also gave me a few things to think about.

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 5:09pmChocolate Rain is clearly calling for the black community to remember history, meaning slavery and to join the OWS to gain in numbers. Again various groups uniting to send the progressive agenda message. Though few of these groups would otherwise have anything in common they unite to push through the progressive movement thinking it will give them the power they need for their own personal agendas. These videos are searching for the common thread to pull people into their cause. It seems to be working even here on the Blaze.
