Man Kicked off Airplane for…Cursing?

A Brooklyn, New York man is considering a lawsuit after he was allegedly kicked off of a carrier flight for cursing. The Detroit Free Press has more:
Robert Sayegh was on a Delta Airlines carrier flight home from his cousin’s wedding in Kansas City when he said a flight attendant overheard him complaining about a 45-minute delay to a fellow passenger.
“It’s ridiculous and embarrassing,” the television producer and children’s book author said this morning from his home in Brooklyn. “I was just kind of talking to the guy sitting next to me. I said ‘What is taking so long?’ I said “What the ‘F’ is going on?’ ” Sayegh said. “I could see if I directed it at (the flight attendant), but I didn’t even speak to him.”
Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 5136, which had been taxiing on the runway, turned around and Detroit Metro Airport Police boarded the plane to escort Sayegh off.
The airline put Sayegh on a later flight and apologized for any inconveniences that resulted from the incident (the company is currently investigating what happened). While airlines do reserve the right to remove people who are disruptive, Sayegh adamantly denies doing anything more than using the F-word in a conversation with the passenger sitting next to him. The Huffington Post has an interesting take on the matter:
Either way, you can add swearing to the growing list of things that might get you kicked off your flight including: being too fat to fly, being too tall, and having strong body odor.
One blogger, though, thinks something may be fishy about Sayegh’s story. The Stir’s Jeanne Sager writes:
…there’s something about Sayegh’s whole story that just doesn’t sit right with me. He contacted the media immediately in Detroit after being escorted off a flight, ostensibly for letting loose several F-bombs.
Naturally there’s the he-said, she-said part of this. Sayegh says all the cursing was done to a fellow passenger, so he shouldn’t have been kicked off. Delta says it’s completing an internal investigation, but they put him on a later flight to Newark, and he got home alright. I’m not saying either one is lying, but who is the naughty one here?
We don’t know. Nobody knows, save for maybe the passengers who were there, the flight attendants, and Sayegh himself. Still, this whole story has shaped up into the classic case of “lazy American can’t ever take responsibility for his own screw-up in a bad situation.” His cursing started the ball rolling, and now we have to listen to him whine on the news ad infinitum about how he’s been wronged.
A number of media outlets are listing what may be Sayegh’s web site. We’ll have to wait and see how the details unfold on this one, but whose side are you on — the airline‘s or the alleged victim’s?

Report Post »You can’t “this day and age” that out of the public conscience. And you shouldn’t expect everyone to accept the same crap that you do. That would be too much like control and inposing your standards on others, wouldn’t it?
Which brings us to that one-way-tolerance that’s so popular “in this day and age” with some people.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 7:39amIt use to be that cursing in public, especially using the F*bomb, would get you kicked out of almost anywhere, or even arrested.
Its still as offencive today, but mostly overlooked even when its in front of kids.

Not in America, sorry. We have freedom of speech in this country, and this poor guy wasn’t even talking to the Flight Attendant who in my view violated his privacy by listening in on his private conversation and then tried to sabotage the guy for exercising his free speech rights.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 7:50amI disagree. Words are one of the most powerful things on the planet. They can be used to inform, enlighten, deceive, and intimidate others, among other things. When I was a child, foul language always upset me because it was the percursor to violence. When I was older, I used it myself to defuse the power these words had over me. Now I find them completely boorish and totally and instantly lose respect for those that use these words casually. I hear this language frequently used by children on the playground when they are trying to act cool, grown-up, important, or to intimidate others. It appears to me that adults do the same thing.

Maybe that’s why our forefathers decided to write freedom of speech into our laws, because they were aware of overly sensitive people trying to control other people’s speech and opinions. In this case the guy wasn’t being either political or personal, he was just speaking rhetorically.
So when else would a perfect “freedom of speech” defense be appropriate. In fact, if someone wanted to get really, really silly, the passenger might claim a violation of privacy since his comments weren’t directed at the flight attendant but were actually “overheard.”
I think the flight attendant went way too far in turning the plane around and nearly having a person arrested simply for an innocent use of a curse word. Pretty soon someone will try to sue claiming their child overheard a bad word and is now scarred for life?
Ease down people.

I would say that even if he was talking to the passenger next to him, he was talking loud so that every one could hear him. Posted on June 14, 2011 at 4:46amHey kids, wayyyyy back when I was your age flying in planes was considered a special and exciting adventure. Seats were large and comfy – the airlines hired attractive ladies who served steaming hot meals during the flight, as well as coloring books – and if you were really good sometimes they’d give you a special pin with wings. People were free to light up a cigar or cigarette at certain times in flight. Family and friends walked you right up to the gate – so you could say your goodbyes and hug/kiss grandma one last time before boarding.
Now it’s like a concentration camp where you are frisked, X-rayed, detected, sniffed, and scanned. Tired grumpy people tell you how big your bags can be and how much they can weigh. Everyone is paranoid and ready to blow their temper at the drop of a hat. A tiny plastic bag with pretzels or peanuts MIGHT be served. Seats have shrunk to accomodate the (now expected) practice of over-booking flights. You pray that you don’t have to squeeze in next to a large person or a parent of a 2 year old who has inevitably learned their parenting skills from either (a) hippies (b) Oprah (c) a pack of wolves.
Sorry for the rant, just another American frustrated by what we’ve allowed to happen to ourselves. IF the guy was cussing a blue streak, then that will be easy to verify from the other passengers. Keep your head down and make no sudden moves – this is the way to fly the friendly skies.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 8:21amI have to totally agree on this one. When I was a young man people watched their mouths for the most part. Of course there where a few slip ups but only with the milder versions of profanity. Back then there was a thing called common decency and a man would never drop the F bomb in front of women and children. Now don‘t get me wrong I’m no prude but I do have the common sence not to unlease such a tirade in public. The problem here is my generation the “Boomers” They took and shook the core of society with it’s all about me ideals attitude. Their Idea’s about freedom and how society should act is way different than from mine. If you don‘t agree with me look at the two generations and compair note’s. My parents generation would easily win hands down in most categories of life. People then were more ethically and morally bound than today. Granted they had their problems but they overcome them with logic and mutual agreement. Today it’s the single person society and his onemindness that rules over the majority. I just have one question. Whatever happened to “Majority Rules”? It’s just dying off like my parents generation along with morallty and ethical behavior.

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 10:23amWhatever happened to “Majority Rules”
According to our Founding Fathers, individual rights are sacred, and should be defended. The “majority rules” concept is nothing more than mob rule, and they warned against it. With that being said, although I occasionally use foul language, I don‘t use it in a public setting or to someone I don’t know out of respect. I must agree with TH30PH1LUS though, flying use to be fun. I would rather just take a leisurely drive from coast to coast now.

I’m getting the feeling that our forefathers got enough of who-likes-what another person said and decided to write “freedom of speech” into our laws.
I also think that some folks tend to over blow situations and display false outrage if they think they can bring somebody down on the basis of a person not being exactly perfect. I don’t think it’s right to immediately condemn and then ostracize ANYBODY because some little item about them can be criticized. That too may have prompted the almighty to say, “He who is without sin, cast the first stone.”
