Authorities say a man who fired a shotgun at an upstate New York courthouse has been wounded by a court officer.
Eyewitnesses tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown that a gunman was spotted on the steps of Middletown City Hall at about 9 a.m. Wednesday. They say he then ran to City Court, where he fired once into the entrance door before being shot.
A spokesman for the state Office of Court Administration tells The Associated Press the man opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun. He says a court officer suffered a graze wound to one of his arms.He says two officers were taken to the hospital for treatment of trauma that wasn’t physical.
The gunman was also taken to a hospital. AP reports that authorities haven’t released his name and condition. According to NBC New York, a law enforcement source says the shooter was killed.
The source tells NBC that the gunman had legal troubles in the past, and is believed to have had a longstanding dispute with the mayor. Police tell NBC that the shot court officer’s injuries are not life threatening.
Update (2:45 p.m.)
The Associated Press confirms that 43-year-old Timothy Mulqueen of Middletown has died after being wounded during a gunfight at an upstate New York courthouse. Court records show that Mulqueen had a pending case involving menacing and other charges after an encounter with Mayor Joseph DeStefano‘s daughter at the mayor’s home last August. Mulqueen was armed Wednesday with a 12-gauge shotgun and grazed one court officer in the arm. Two other officers were taken to a hospital for treatment for shock.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 12:51pmThe officers that were taken to the hospital for non-physical trauma is a polite way of saying they had the crap scared out of them when the shooting started and were probably having a mental breakdown. I don’t know what level of training those officers had but having recently retired from the Army, I can say that the first time I had bullets flying in my direction, it was a pretty traumatic and memorable experience. And I don’t care who you are or how tough you think you are…when someone has the business end of a firearm pointed at you…and is pulling the trigger…bravado goes right out the window.

Ha who am I kidding I live in the 2nd worst State California. the gun laws here make as much sense as paying welfare to illegals.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 6:16amWLC74, perfect comment. Proves a point doesn’t it? Chalk one up for the second ammendment. Why don’t they just make stricter punishment for CRIMES committed with a gun? Law biding citizens would not have to worry, only the criminals. To leave us defenseless against the idiots that are responsible for the crimes is just plain stupid. I am not a gun freak by any means. I was taught by my father who built muzzle-loaders for a hobby . You never point a gun at anything that you do not intend to shoot, guns are not toys, and that you are responsible for your own actions. He taught me how to shoot and gun safety. I knew better than to ever go against his teachings. I personally can’t hunt or kill an animal and it would have to take a life and death situation to make me shoot a person. If (and I pray it never happens) I was ever in that situation, I will be honest with you , it would haunt me. However, I have to admit that there is a feeling of security in knowing that I can shoot a gun. I happen to enjoy target shooting so I guess that makes me some kind of threat to man kind in the eyes of the progressives. According to our constitution, I have that right as an American citizen.
