Man Robs Bank and Demands $1 Just to Get Free Health Care in Jail

Man Robs Bank and Demands $1 Just to Get Free Health Care in Jail“I prepared myself for this,” James Richard Verone told the Gaston Gazette from behind a thick, glass window at the Gaston County Jail last week. But the jail might as well be called Verone’s free ticket to health care. At least that‘s how he’s treating it, and why he decided to rob a bank to get there.

See, Verone lost his job with Coca-Cola a few years ago and eventually became a convenience story clerk. That led to some aches and pains, a limp, and major pain once his arthritis flared up. He also found a protrusion in his chest. He went to see if he qualified for disability, but he didn’t, only food stamps. He didn’t want to burden his family with taking care of him, so he decided to do the next best thing — get you, the taxpayer, to pay for him. How’s that done? By robbing a bank, getting sent to jail, and getting free food, shelter, and medical care.

So he did. But there’s a catch: when he showed up to pull of the heist, he only demanded $1.

The Gaston Gazette describes the crime:

Then he had another idea: commit a crime and get set up with a place to stay, food and doctors.

He started planning.

As his bank account depleted and the day of execution got closer, Verone sold and donated his furniture. He paid his last month’s rent and gave his notice.

He moved into the Hampton Inn for the last couple of days. Then on June 9 he followed his typical morning routine of getting ready for the day.

He took a cab down New Hope Road and picked a bank at random — RBC Bank.

Verone didn’t want to scare anyone. He executed the robbery the most passive way he knew how.

He handed the teller a note demanding one dollar, and medical attention.

“I didn’t have any fears,” said Verone. “I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police.”

The teller, however, did have some fears even though Verone never showed a weapon.

Her blood pressure shot up and once Verone was handcuffed by police, the teller was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital to be checked out.

Verone said he was sorry for causing the woman any pain.

Because he only demanded $1, Verone has only been charged with larceny instead of bank robbery. Although that’s still a felony, it could carry less time in jail — something Verone worries about.

Still, he has a plan if he gets off easy: he’ll rob a bank again.

“If I had not exercised all the alternatives I would be sitting here saying, ‘Man I feel bad about it,’” he told the Gazette.

“I knew that a felony would not hurt me. I cannot work anymore,” he said. “That felony is going to hurt my reputation.”

Viewing some of the heartless comments on this thread reminds me why I’m not a Republican. Republicans have no heart and Democrats are control freaks. Both parties are literally in bed with each other and outwardly pretend otherwise. I can’t judge this man but I know desperation when I see it. Doctors too have taken do no harm to the level of not treating anyone unless they have the money to pay them. I don’t have an answer that can return us to the time when we actually cared for our neighbors and fellow human beings. I guess that won‘t happen until after the age of man’s rule has ended. :)

      Matthew 7
15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Desperate people will do desperate things. It’s time to end this madness. Let’s get out of all foreign countries and let them fend for themselves for a change saving us billions on defense. Lets reduce our Military numbers as a consequence and put the remaining folk along our borders to protect the motherland. Let’s tell the rest of the world, if you even sneeze the wrong way, you will be offed. Let’s renegotiate or repeal the idiotic trade agreements that have caused our jobs to disappear (Ross P’s big sucking sound comes to fruition; yes I voted for him since I refused to vote for Bush Sr. again at that time; Voted Michael Peroutka instead of W as well on his second term since he was pushing CAFTA). I’m sorry; conservative I am, but not w.r.t. these idiotic trade agreements. You can’t compete against someone getting $1 a day unless you are willing to make the same. I’m tired of us being the worlds military and police force and this has got to stop. Bad people exists in this world and have existed since the beginning of time. It’s not our job to remove these guys. Most importantly, we not only have lack of opportunities now (mainly due to the idiotic trade agreements), but we are literally nearly out of money too and we have to stop spending our way into oblivion. Add tariffs, and I will guarantee the jobs will come back (because we will have to make our own stuff again). ‘Nough said. :)

Ever thought of running for president! My thoughts run along the same lines! And we certainly cannot be the only ones wondering why our own borders are not secure. Our sovereignty is most assuredly at stake and all other issues will fade back as less important when one realizes that without our freedoms nothing else will matter. Free speech allows us the right to comment today. It is most important for all Americans at this time to stop arguing over small matters and get together in a real way over the more important matters at hand. If we love our constitution and what it stands for we need to stop special interest and stand for those things we were told our country was built on.
However, it may be too late for common sense. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness was to be for all people not a few. Too many times it is not what you know, who you are, what you stand for; but who you know. For the love of money is now greater than LOVE of life so it seems. God help us.

John, your full name, John 3:16 (For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.) must be a joke to you. You must be a liberal, being sarcastic with that biblical name you took. This man had a job, sounds like for many years with Coke. He lost that job, it happens in life, but rather than welfare he took a clerk job that probably has no benefits. Here’s a major news flash for you John, guys that look to be in their 50s and older aren’t the first pick for those doing any job hiring. There’s no tax benefit for the company, because he isn’t a minority. You have no idea of what lead to this mans plight. You have no idea of his health picture. It seems like he didn’t want to stiff his landlord, that he didn’t want to really be a criminal, that he felt sorry for any pain he may have given the teller. We don’t know his mental state either. He didn’t want to burden his family. Perhaps he could of just taken himself out for you.

Wow, just wow. Everyday, or nearly everyday, I get up, get dressed, eat breakfast and go to work. I‘m waiting for a knee replacement to be done because my knee is so bad I can’t walk unaided anymore, both sciatica nerves are impinged and my feet are number, and both hips are arthritic. Yet I just get up, and go do it. I certainly don’t expect, nor do I want, you folks to pay for my care.
This “man”, and I use that term really liberally (sorry about the dirty word there), is a symptom of our problems. He has never learned to take true responsibility for his life, and now makes excuses. Here is the real kicker, the jail can actually deny him treatment on these conditions. It was just in the news not long ago, somebody in I believe Washington State commited a crime with the intent of getting free healthcare for their medical issues, and they were denied the care, and rightfully so. When someone does something like this, it’s really the same as fraud. He should be denied the care, unless he or his family can pay for it.

My doc who did two fellowships in pain management told me to swim for my sciatica pain, and it worked. It will also align your entire body, strengthen stabilizing muscles and help with the hip pain as well. Also, orthotics, the hard ones, not the soft, work for knee pain. I know yours is probably way beyond that, but it could help a little. You can get them at Sports Authority or a drug store for 20 bucks. God Bless.

The main reason that people in the United States are so up in arms over health care is because people want to live as long as they can because they are afraid to die. Deep down they know that there is an afterlife and they want to put that off as far as they can.

They try to live in society and find when they ask for help they see every minority getting it but they don’t qualify because they have a job. But the next door family who are illegals get thousands per month and all their babies paid for. I’ll bet for years he has seen this type of scams going to everyone else but him and saw this as his only way to survive. I’m retired and some of my friends have brought this up in conversation as a joke but was it? I stood in line one time with my paperwork for a SBA loan of which I was qualified. My banker said not to go as I would be disapointed and she was right. I stood in line only to find 100′s of immigrants who had just come off the boat who wanted donut shops and massage parlor and restaurants with their people handling paperwork and translators. They all got their money and I was turned away they never even looked at my paperwork. This is how the Gov has been against common working man for years.

He should have done the right thing and commit suicide since he is no longer a productive member of society. Course unfortunately that would cost tax payers $ to bury him.

Prisons have TVs, food, free healthcare, drugs and a place to sleep with people watching over you…Kinda like a nursing home…Why not?

Make prison a place you want to avoid…But that wont happen because the Liberals scream when we hurt an evil doers feelings.

      @DOUGBEACH,
Your are correct, no one is ENTITLED to my money for any reason, including sad medical ones. Why is this guys medical problems more important than any problems I may or may not have? Should I go hungry for a few days so he can get the medical care? Who chooses that?

This guy had other options, 1. No one is refused medical care, he might have hod to enter in to a payment plan for the rest of his life, or borrow money, but he would have gotten care. 2> There are THOUSANDS of charity he could have applied to if he needed an expensive operation that he could not have paid for, most hospitals have a list.

Even at the end of the day if all other options were exhausted, he would still not be ENTITLED to steal money from someone else, He was arrested for stealing $1 to pay for medical expense, why it is wrong for him to steal, but it perfectly ok for the government to steal my money and use it to pay for his medical expenses…….

Maybe instead of free health care he just wanted a few boyfriends. Other than that, it just goes to show everyone that convicted criminals get too many benefits. One other thing, it doesn’t matter what the excuse is, there is no reason to ruining your good name and reputation for something like this. I too have arthritis, pretty bad and no I don’t have disability yet, if I can get it. I lost my job because I wasn’t able to do my job of apartment maintenance because of my arthritis. I am unable to get a job like at a convenience store because I cannot stand for long periods of time. I cannot get a job at a desk because of the arthritis in my hands. I do not ask for nor look for sympathy, pity nor do I want pity. I am only saying this because he said: “I knew that a felony would not hurt me. I cannot work anymore,” he said. “That felony is going to hurt my reputation.”. Well, that is just an excuse that was convenient for him and if he was willing to do this, then I doubt his reputation was very good to begin with.

… hey dummy! Just go to the emergency room, just like an illegal alien, and get checked out. So what if you start stacking up medical bills. The fed will pay for them, just like they do for illegals! Oh wait, yer a white guy. You’ll be responsible for the bills. So sorry …

This is what a liberal mindset can do to a person.

      Oh, what a cryin’ shame.

I’ve seen mugshots of criminals with BHO t-shirts on. Has anyone ever seen a mugshot of a criminal wearing Bush or Regan shirts? Just an observation.

If you’ve worked in a convenience store in the past decade, for minimum wage or barely above it with absolutely no benefits of any kind (no insurance, 401k, vacation, hell, no frakkin lunchbreaks), Jail would sound like a winning alternative to you too. Try living on less than 1000$ a month, take home pay, I dare you. Can‘t be done if you don’t have somebody to split the bills with. The work is fast-paced and requires a high degree of multitasking. No other job so demanding pays so little. I always joke that I should have gone into something less challenging, like Air Traffic Control, and I can’t wait unitl I get my AA degree and get out of customer service forever.

Ignorance. What he doesn’t know is that the health care he will receive on jail is minimal and not as good as free clinics. Arthritis? He can have Tylenol or ibuprofen
(no stronger pain pills) and he’ll have to wait months to even see the practitioner. Rofl.

Just reading all the good “christians” here that worship the demonic St. Ayn Rand. How Christ like, concerned with the pennys in your pocket while another man is in need of help.

I’m not buying it.. Why not clear the bank out and pay for it himself with the proceeds, instead of asking for a dollar ? Either way he is set , and if he got away with it the more power to him… what a dope , I would’ve went for the vault…

Such a sad state of affairs… For those of us, about 12 percent, who are self-employed and forced to deal directly with the Health Insurance Giants, we know how this guy feels…

Our premiums have sky-rocketed over the past ten years so that we’re now paying the price of a standard mortgage every four weeks… Of course, Obama’s Health Care Law is an absolute failure… A complete redistribution of wealth from the productive to the non-productive. However, something must be done to reduce the ever-escalating costs of health care premiums for all Americans…

As more and more Americans lose their employee health care plans, thanks to Obama’s 2,700-page monstrosity of a Health Care law, more and more will see what we’ve had to put up with these past few years.

How about repealing Obama’s total failure of a health care law and replacing it with simple common sense measures to increase competition, thereby decreasing health care costs?

I dub these the ‘obama society’.
it’s a trend that has now been exposed.
soon, when our prisons are overflowing,
bank robbers won’t get jail time.
they may even free ALL prisoners.
      it is ‘Obama’s society’.
