Man Spends More Than $350,000 Prepping for the Apocalypse: What Did He Buy?

Prepper Spends More Than $350,000 on Items to Help Survive a Catastrophe

Robert Bast (Photo: Facebook)

Robert Bast of Melbourne, Australia, has a steady job, a wife and three children. He has a 75-acre plot of land and a pickup. With these amenities, it may seem like he‘s just living out every man’s dream, but they were actually strategic purchases.

Bast is prepping for the apocalypse – or some sort of catastrophe – which he believes will happen in his lifetime, according to GeekOSystem. With these and other preparatory purchases for a catastrophic event, it is reported that he has spent more than $350,000. GeekOSystem has more on what Bast, 46, purchased for the “strong likelihood that there will be a catastrophe of some kind:”

The majority of the $350,000 cost was put into buying a 75-acre plot of land that is 1,500 feet above sea level (in order to avoid tsunamis and flooding), on which he build a house and bunker. He spent $10,00o on a pickup truck to drive him to the safe spot in case of emergency, and spent $5,000 on stockpiles of food and water, as well as $11,000 on your standard array of survival equipment — batteries, generators, water purifiers, solar power, and gas cookers.

(Related: Check out National Geographic‘s new series ’Doomsday Preppers’)

In addition to his day job in Internet marketing, Bast also runs the website Survive 2012. On the site, Bast mostly goes off of Mayan predictions that the something — a “great change” — would happen in the world on Dec. 21, 2012. Bast acknowledges that to some this means “spiritual change,” but to him it could mean a catastrophic event or the end of the world. Bast writes that there is “zero scientific evidence that anything will happen” but still goes on to say that a number of things could happen. These include:

[...] a geomagnetic reversal, asteroid strike or supernova. Or something more intimate, like a flu pandemic, or a nuclear war.

While Bast’s survival endeavors came at a price, he states on his Facebook page that it can be done cheaply — even for free.

The Blaze recently reported NASA explaining why we shouldn’t worry about the Mayan prediction; that Dec. 21 would be just another day. Bast acknowledges this perspective but alludes to some skepticism himself though, stating on his blog “I feel like running a contest… how many more articles and videos debunking 2012 will NASA release? I’ve lost count of how many they’ve made to date.”

CNN reports Patrick Geryl as spending considerably less than Bast on his doomsday preparations — $130,000. Geryl has also authored several books on potential catastrophes and survival. Should a catastrophic event occur, according to CNN, Geryl has a “small wooden bunker far from the nuclear radiation in South Africa” where he will ride it out.

Watch CNN’s report of a “survival condo”:

CNN reports Phil Burns, subject of Animal Planet’s “Meet the Preppers,” saying that saving for disasters is a lifestyle and that we shouldn’t be running about spending loads of cash at one time. Burns says it’s best to start small, putting aside 20 percent of your income for survival goods.

Last week GBTV’s For the Record hosted Jack Spirko, who runs The Survival Podcast. Spirko said most people are “survivalists”, even if they don’t consider themselves one per se given the political connotation the term has earned recently. Watch the clip where Spirko discusses some of the practical aspects of prepping to become “individual libertarians”:

GBTV also has its own reality TV show — Independence USA — which follows the efforts of one may trying to prepare his family to live “off the grid.” Independence USA airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

There are no misspellings in the Blaze text of the article and, while the grammar is not that of formal English, it is significantly more correct than most conversational English or even the grammar commonly encountered in many print publications.

Either the Blaze mendaciously reprinted a corrected draft of the article without indicating such a change, or all of you are ignorant buffoons who are unable to recognize proper spelling and grammar. Regardless, each one of you who criticized the spelling or grammar in the Blaze text above made at least one very common spelling or grammar mistake in your posted criticism.

And yes, I am paid to critique, and to produce, formal writing as part of my day job.

There are 2 kinds of people, those who are prepared and those who are not. If you choose to not be prepared, you’re already dead. Maybe you all should print out this article and save it for reading when our economy collapses. That’s why the consistently poor quality of the articles on Blaze bothers me. Maybe you aren’t into correct grammar or correct spelling. Pick something else that matters to you personally and appears to be going ot h3ll in this country, and you will understand why people who love the English language and spend time learning to express themselves employing said language go on about correct grammar and spelling all the time in something that is presented as a news source and available to the whole world.

      Right on.

Of course, he is not actually preparing for a TEOTWAWKI scenario. In such a scenario both legal and civil society will break down and the deed on his property will be worthless compared to someone with a greater supply of 7.62 NATO. His purchase of arable land is an investment in a productive asset which would likely increase in value in the event of an extremely severe economic depression which leaves some semblance of orderly society in place. In the meantime it is still either a productive asset or a speculative investment, and he has garnered himself some significant brand advertising and product/service marketing without actually having to spend a single dollar on ads.

I do wonder if this is in U.S. or Australian dollars. The article does not make the currency unit clear and there is about a $15K difference.

I believe in being ready for an emergency, and we have enough food to last a few months if rationed. We are also well armed and not only keep our vehicles full of gas we are also all cyclists with good road bikes and we can ride long distances (hundreds of miles) with no problem. We camp quite a lot so we have the equipment and knowledge to survive off the grid…

But I draw the line at spending thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, on what might happen. No matter how much you prep, you will never be ready for what really happens. Saddle yourself with too much stuff and you can’t bug out and have to defend your property. Dont have enough stocked up and you go hungry until you can figure out a way to feed yourself and family…It is okay to be armed, but people will do anything when desperate. If you go that route you will end up killing many before they finally get you. Better to cooperate with those willing. OTOH, you have to protect yourself, family, and property…

In the end, no matter what you have or what you lack, you just have to take each day one at a time. Trust in God, in the end that is your only REAL defense against this world.

The answer to your problem is dual usage.

My family likes to hike, fish and hunt, so a cabin out in the woods/mountains would make sense, even if the end doesn’t come.

We live in a brutally hot climate, so something underground(with good ventilation) to store things like lawmowers or tools and maybe potatos or pecans, makes sense.

We have a lot of sunshine, so a solar water heating system made economical sense.

Just find things that have a practical use in both everyday life and also serve in tough times and invest in those things.

I don’t base my decisions regarding how to live my life and spend my money on the Mayan calendar.

If the world is ending, no amount of prepping will keep you alive.

Prepping is fine if you are getting practically ready for a catastrophe or gov’t collapse. Not everyone has the money to do it. The one guy says to spend just 20% of your income on it. If I did that I’d have no food to eat now. Or no gas to get to work. So I do what I can, even if it’s just a little bit.

Coupons and sales flyers come to mind.

Years ago, for a while, we cut off the cable and all non essential spending like name brand food.

Learn to can. A large mason jar with the non- reusable lid will cost you < $1 (.15 if you can find them at Goodwill) a package of bean seeds about the same. For about $20 you can have a month's worth of beans, corn or peas. Store what you eat and eat what you store (rotate based on exp. dates).

Buy raw wheat (or plant it) for about $1 lb and a grinder, make your own flour.

Hit the dollar store, you can get about 8 servings of french fries for a dollar back in their frozen food section.

Don't buy bottled water, save old milk jugs wash them out and re-fill them with water and a drop of clorine bleach.

Take whatever money you have left over and start saving it towards something you deem really necessary for your family.

      Here is some more

Really cheap foods that store well and fill a belly…

      Rice ($3 for 5 lbs/ 45 servings)
      Pasta ($1 a pound generic/6 servings)
Wheat (about $1 lb for organically grown/ 4 loaves of bread)

Save up and buy a dehydrator (a decent one can be found for under $50) some ovens will work on a very low setting to do the same thing.

When my veggies start getting old (onions, garlic or potatoes sprouting, apples getting soft) rather than tossing them, I cut them up and dehydrate them and put them in an old peanut butter jar with a desiccant pack (sometimes they come in boxes of shoes or electronics, just don’t eat it).

In the summer I just use a tray out on the hood of my truck and dry them out in the sun, do the same for jerky.

Long burning candles can be found at Wal-mart for about $1 (they are the religious ones in the glass jars)

Outdoor solar lights like the ones you use for path lighting can be found at home Depot on sale for about $1.50 and will make for good indoor alternative to candles.

After you have saved up, you can try pawn shops for a good shotgun (about $100 for a pump action Mossberg 12g) and when bird hunting season rolls around, everyone has sales on bird shot.

      Hope this helps, good luck.

Funny thing – Since the creation of our calender there have been over 500 leap year days. The Mayan calendar didn’t account for leap year. The world should have ended something like 7 months ago.

The Mayans (the Hopi’s are a different story) never prophecied the end of the world, only a transition. They believed that the earth would change. Because it was the last one on the wheel, some people believed the Mayans saw nothing after it. But the calender I have on my wall ends with January 2013, doesn’t mean I think the world will end on Feb. 1, it just means I don’t need for one to go out any further.

People, mostly followers of New Age took it to mean “The Age of Aquarius” would begin as both are based in Astrological signs.

Finally! Someone who actually knows something about their calendar. I just wrote that as a joke really. The Mayans believed that the world (all aspects) went through cycles; some believed that the world would begin a new cycle at that date. They didn’t count leap year because they were more concerned with keeping their calender “uninterrupted” as compared to accurate to seasons (which is the purpose of leap year). Some of them did believe the world would end in a manner of speaking, they felt that it would “end in water” (a minority as far as I know). They just believed that after the destruction it would start all over.

The same thing was happening in the 50′s. People were dead set that the USSR would send a nuke to the US so everyone had to “live” underground and kids had to take duck and cover drills in school, etc. In the end, nothing happened. Nothing at all. Just like the Y2K thing. Nada. Still worried about it? Buy a gun and a lot of ammo. Forget the natural disaster theories. Not going to happen. Pole shifts takes centuries. A sudden mega – volcano, flood, hurricane, etc? Nah. Buy a gun.

There is money to be made on fearmongering.

Y2K was real. Corporations large and small around the world spent a fortune on software fixes to prevent disaster, and it worked. I spent six months of 1999 buying and modifying software to fix the problem in my corporation’s computers. Many thousands of other Programmers were similarly busy around the globe that year, and the result was that very few Y2K problems occurred. It was NOT a phony threat.

And regarding the “Soviet nuclear threat” of the last century, it also was real. Why did nothing happen? Because we armed ourselves to the teeth with ICBMs and nuclear missile subs and created the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) scenario. This is what prevented nuclear war so effectively. I was a Minuteman Launch Officer in the 60′s, and I assure you that it was all VERY real.

The thing is that no one can disprove a conspiracy theory because it’s a negative. Anything that’s proffered from live TV and amateur film at the time to the 3000 or so people who lost loved ones to the 9/11 Commission Report, you‘ll have a pat theory as to why it’s all phony. In the end, conspiracy theories are created because certain sections of society can‘t process the truth because it’s heavily nuanced, requires a lot of history and background work, and it’s messy.

Black Manta and youdidthis, you guys are right.
Here is how it all happened: One day Jews decided to set up America against Muslims so they hired 20 or so Arabs to hijack 4 planes. Hijackers were yelling Allah Akbar into the radios to make sure we have no doubt Muslims did it. Planes (currently hidden in underground tunnels) flew to secret FEMA camps, but FAA had to cover up tracks somehow. So FAA had military crash four “Airplane Shaped Missiles” that were actually UFO holograms into the towers, pentagon, and in Shanksville field. Missiles flew just like airplanes, carried tons of jet fuel, luggage, and were conveniently standing by for such an event. Flight recorders were planted there in advanced as well as explosives into the walls of WTC to make impact holes bigger and eventually bring the towers down. Then FAA uploaded videos contradicting their own original story to youtube to make the whole thing even more confusing. The live broadcast on CNN that I was watching that morning was also faked by Jews in the media. And Bin Laden admitted he was a Mossad agent all this time.
Furthermore, Jews also plan for phase 2 – they are arming Iran with nukes because they want to start WW III. Phase 3 is to cause Polar Shift and send asteroid / Planet X our way.

Dudes, too much youtube is not good for you!
