Man Trampled and Fatally Gored by Flaming-Horned Bull at Spanish Festival

Flaming Horned Bull Gores and Kills Man in Spain

(AP) A flaming-horned bull trampled and fatally gored a man early Saturday during a festival in eastern Spain, an official said.

Large balls of flaming wax are traditionally affixed to the beasts’ heads before they are let loose to rampage through squares and narrow streets in such festivals.

The mayor of Navajas, population 730, said emergency services in his town were unable to save the life of the 45-year-old man whose name was withheld. Jose Vicente Torres said the accident happened when the man, who had traveled from Alboraia, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) to the south, tripped just as the bull was released.

Torres said the bull charged the man, gored him and then stamped on his head, causing him “irreversible injuries.” He said he had offered his condolences to the man’s family, but would not cancel similar events scheduled for early Sunday.

“Although ours is a small town, many people from outside come to visit our feast dedicated to Saint Anton,” Torres said, adding that black bows had been tied to town hall flags as a mark of respect and mourning.

Many towns in east and northeastern Spain celebrate feasts with “toros embolados,“ or ”flaming bulls,” which feature the animals racing around and shaking their heads as a reaction to flames or fireworks attached to or close to their horns. At these regional festivals, flaming-horned bulls are taunted and teased by rowdy crowds in bullrings, town squares or down streets. Unlike with most other events involving bulls, the animals aren’t killed in the end.

The regional parliament of northeastern Catalonia banned bullfighting in July 2010 following a signature-collection campaign by animal rights activists. The ban took effect Jan. 1. But the region then passed other legislation protecting flaming bulls, called “correbous” in the Catalan language. Many critics said banning one act while enshrining the other in law was hypocrisy.

I feel that when someone gets hurt by tortured animals, they get what they deserve. What great fun is it when dogs or chickens fight each other to the death? What’s next–watching lions eat Christians? That used to be a great sport. Society is permeated with sick bastards.

Sometimes I do not like humans very much.

Some bonehead shot a buck with an arrow in our neighborhood. The buck happened to be an orphan twin that managed to live behind our house in some brush. It wasn’t fatal, but it took over a month for that buck to rub the arrow out. You can imagine what I’d like to do to the “big bow hunter”.

Very good, Snuffy. I was going to bring that up, too. The idea that people would even watch, let alone start something like **** fighting with razor blades attached to them, and dog fighting, and bull fighting. Very sick individuals and should be made to fight to the death on pay tv. Lets see how brave they are then.

Exactly, I actually thinks it’s Justice when people reap the misery they sow….God gave of dominion over animals just as he has dominion over us. I’m quite sure that he will judge what we do with that dominion and give us what we deserve. I eat meat but take no pleasure in the suffering or death of animals. I view it as a necessary part of nature much as the lion eating it’s prey. People who watch a man slowly bleed a bull to death and cheer aren’t people at all. They are the real animals and are as souless as anything on the planet.

This particular event is not bullfighting which is a rather sad affair, in my view. These bulls run free in amongst a crowd of humans trying to desperately to stay away from the pointy bits.

Attaching burning stuff to the horns is an interesting departure from the Pamploma event, and I’m sure that the animals would rather be in a field munching grass. But at the end of the day, they go home alive.

Not necessarily the same outcome for the humans, obviously.

Actually (and sadly), there IS a lot of cruelty associated with rodeo. Some of the bucking horses are hit with stunguns shortly before leaving the chute to make them buck. Calves frequently break necks or suffer horrible injuries during the roping. The official numbers are typically much less than reported by activist groups at the event (so it’s hard to get an objective number), but rodeo organizers have been caught lying about injuries and deaths caught on video. I used to love watching rodeo, but stopped once I learned about what goes on. And these are not the small ones either – they’re the big ones, such as Cheyenne Frontier Days, which has a terrible record.

Then there’s animal testing, our weak animal cruelty laws, and the recent return of horse slaughter. The U.S. has its own poor record on cruelty to animals. The problem is addressing it without allowing the far left to turn it into a world where animals have attorneys, and everyone is forced to live by their agenda.
