Mandated Messages: The President and Homeland Security Coming to Your Cell Phone

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City will launch a new national emergency alert system by the end of the year that will send messages to cell phones during disasters.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the announcement Tuesday at a news conference overlooking the World Trade Center site.
He says the new technology will give the public clear and accurate information about imminent safety threats.
The mayor says it will be geographically targeted and send messages to all cell phone users.
He was joined by FCC Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genashowski, as well as federal and local officials.
The alert plan was approved by Congress in 2006 under the Warning Alert and Response Network Act.
The system also will be launched in Washington by the end of the year.

Thanks for warning me of the immenent nuclear attack of the homeland that you yourself have brought on through the recent treaty revisements you signed off on. This is a warning to us all! We should be very concerned that this country is being set up for a nuke attack and will be used in return to get martial law inacted and to skip out on our debts. Its the only clear path I see them using.

The entire class dreaded it (we listened to it on a cassette tape) but then when it started to come to life and we realized it was actually happening, we would literally quote it to other students in our graduating class and they didn’t believe us!
I am only 20 years old and I’m absolutely terrified about the world we live in.

Now imagine a guy 43 years old (me) going through the same thing and seeing it starting back in the 1980′s. And I‘d bet the 1980’s is probably a bellwether time for “freedom” to most under 30. Just imagine.
And my grandfather, who was 72 at the time (early 1990′s) telling me how little freedom I have compared to what he grew up with.
It‘s a long view type of thing that you don’t realize until you talk to older folks, and see that they saw the same thing when *they* were young. Yikes, we‘d really in a mess aren’t we?

I’m 41 and my dad (God rest his soul) used to say the same things to me. He would have been 81 this year. He passed away in 2001 (before 9-11) and things have changed so much that his ashes are probably in a tizzy.

The complete FCC proposal can be found at http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2011/db0209/FCC-11-13A1.pdf. Briefly, the FCC believes that the switched telephone network (i.e. telephone lines and switching centers) is obsolete and should be dismantled. Therefore FCC’s policy is to phase out telephone lines during the coming years and replace them with broadband service. In other words, the FCC wants ordinary telephones to be entirely replaced with cell phones and computers (voice over Internet). The first step is to take money that is now being used to subsidize rural telephone service and subsidize broadband (i.e. Internet) services instead.
The Universal Service Fund is a federal fund paid for by a surcharge on everyone’s long distance telephone bill. Until now, the fund has been used to subsidize telephone service in rural areas, as well as telephone service to people with low incomes, to make sure all Americans have access to a telephone.
This proposal by the FCC would eliminate some subsidies for ordinary telephone services within two years and reallocate Universal Service Fund money to pay for fixed and wireless broadband instead. This is the first step in eliminating the Universal Service Fund itself and creating a “Connect America Fund,” which could only be used to subsidize fixed and wireless broadband.

Why would the Federal government warn me about tornadoes? How would they even freakin’ know, even locals barely know in enough time to turn on the sirens. How would they warn me about tsunamis? Most of them sneak the hell up on people, there is no reliable detection system for them at current date and the most we can do is guess, at best.
My county’s storm sirens work fine, and we have an autodialer that hits all of the county phones here for night time tornadoes, all without a special chip or the need to “override” my ability to use a device I’m paying for.

I’ve not owned or needed a cell phone for years, and YES, I have a life… I own my life – no one else.
To all of you who cannot imagine life without a cell phone, I invite you to really consider how much you need it and what drives your need. I look at cell phones as expensive shackles for which the prisoner is billed. There are so few emergencies for which someone has an absolute need to reach me… so I make it a practice not to have ‘emergencies’. Most phone calls can wait until I return to my landline base station and check messages. I’m not an anti-technology Luddite, and I was one of the earliest users of cell phones, but the cost/benefit ratio has not made sense to me for several years now and I’ve found that with a little preparation before I leave home, there’s nothing that cannot wait until I return.
If you’re in business – calling on customers from your mobile office/car, then you’ll probably need one as I once did, but why not put all the company phones in your business’ name? Have customers call your man office number which forwards the call to whatever phone you’re assigned that week. Swapping phones among co-workers each week protects your freedom of movement from prying government. You’re not required (yet) to keep records of who has which phone each week.
How did we ever survive before cell phones? Simple. We were more responsible and self-contained and we still got the job done. I got nothing to hide, but I resent Big Broth

what does your comment even mean? this system wasn’t in place on 9-11 and besides, that was ten years ago. Many people didn’t even have a cell phone ten years ago.
This isn’t a big deal. So they can send out a mass text. so what? This system doesn’t have to be in place for them to track you through GPS.
If you’re worried about someone tracking your movements and analyzing them then you need to look at capitalism. The only people who are going to care about your habits and routines are the one’s trying to figure out how to market products to you and generate revenue. Not big brother, big profit. —They’re already doing it. The profit motive is why you get spied on. Money money money. And who cares anyway. None of us are special. No one cares.

I made sure that the phone does not have texting. It took me quite a lot of work to put a stop to sales calls and sales texts on my old phone. If I would not pay to receive sales texts and calls, why would I want to pay to get political calls from politicians I do not support or intend to vote for?
