Bachmann Alleges False Editing in Clinic Controversy: ‘Not the Way I Would Talk’

Over the past week, controversy has swirled around Rep. Michele Bachmann’s husband, Dr. Marcus Bachmann. The Christian counselor has been lambasted for his clinic’s alleged use of “reparative therapy” (a controversial counseling approach that seeks to alleviate individuals of their same-sex attraction). Now, Bachmann has come forward to defend his clinic and to dispel what he believes are misconceptions regarding his stance on homosexuality. He responded to these issues in an interview with the Twin Cities’ Star Tribune:

In it, Bachmann explains that his Christian business is not focused on converting homosexuals and he denies that he ever called gays “barbarians” — an allegation that stems from a radio interview he granted back in 2010. The Star Tribune reports that Bachmann believes someone may have doctored the publicized recording. He says:

“I was talking in reference to children. Nothing, nothing to do with homosexuality. That’s not my mindset. That’s not my belief system. That’s not the way I would talk.”

Also, Bachmann insists that converting gays isn‘t something that is at the forefront of his clinic’s mission. Although he didn’t deny that he or other counselors have attempted to engage in converting patients, he said that such a measure would only be taken at a patient’s request. As a business that uses faith to treat individuals suffering from depression or anxiety, the use of Christianity to address this issue, in his view, follows suit. He explains:

“Will I address it? Certainly we’ll talk about it. Is it a remedy form that I typically would use? … It is at the client’s discretion. We don’t have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone.”

Considering his wife’s stances on government, Bachmann has also come under fire for accepting state and federal subsidies. But, he claims that these monies have come in as a result of his refusal to discriminate against low-income patients who have subsidized health care coverage. He says:

“It’s low income. It’s people who are on limited income. It is a lower-paying insurance. It’s not a money maker. … So, gee, we get criticized because we take it. And somehow they tie it all in, into my wife because she’s the big proponent of less taxes and less programs and so forth.

So, over and over the bell rings about how we take this federal money. Oooh, how evil that is. And I say to you: ‘No. It would be evil not to.’”

Much of the controversy over Bachmann’s clinic erupted after John Becker, a gay rights activist who lives in Vermont, engaged in a sting operation there last month. He posed as a patient who was looking for a “cure” to same-sex attraction. He then posted information about the experience online and worked with media to spread the word.

In an e-mail to The Blaze, Becker’s employer, Wayne Besen, claims that the full video (not just the snippets released to media) would be released “hopefully” in the next week or two. This complete video may shed further light on the clinic’s practices. But, if it shows Becker asking fervently for Christian counseling to alleviate his same-sex attraction, it will substantiate Bachmann‘s claim that such treatment comes at the patient’s request.

Only time will tell if Bachmann’s responses will be enough to stem the growing controversy following the secret sting operation.

Too bad…this will sink her…. Having ones stance on abortion and gay issues mean so much to their electability is just stupid.. They do not involve anything that they do or would do in public office. If one is openly anti-gay then they do nothing but drive away potential voters…that‘s just stupid what’s needed now is a fiscal conservative as president….I could give a damn about his view on abortion….it doesn‘t matter and it won’t change anything…

And that‘s where a lot of people don’t understand pro-life voters.

If you view abortion as the ending of human life, it really IS the biggest issue, right? I mean, yea economics are important, but if this were Stalinist Russia, would you be more concerned with shutting down the gulags or that the economy was hurting?

For those that don’t particularly care about abortion, it’s not a big deal. But people who are actively pro-life are abhorrent of abortion because of that view. So Bachmann being quite emphatic about her pro-life stance really is important to other pro-life voters.

If people go to a mental health clinic mostly for anxiety and depression issues, then how could a therapy that teaches the person seeking help that their basic sexuality is evil, sinful, must be suppressed, eradicated, hidden, is in any way helpful? It seems to me such therapy would actually damage the patient.

He sought to overcome his homosexual urges. Claimed to, rather.

So… yea, that’s a pretty important place to start.

Christians are taught to face the depravity of sin, repent of it, and change their life. You cannot move forward, then, without looking the evil in the eyes and discovering the core issues.

Whether you think homosexuality is a sin or not isn’t an issue here, really. The man had gone under the guise of feeling that homosexuality was a sin to a counselor who feels the same way. That the counselor would utilize the Christian method for tackling sin. It‘s like if a vegetarian went to a McDonald’s, ordered a cheeseburger, and then tried to start a scandal because McDonald’s GAVE THAT CHEESEBURGER to a vegetarian. Nonissue.

News Corp is apparently in serious trouble, not just in the U.K., but now also in the U.S. The FBI investigating illegal phone hacking of the families of 911 victims. The Editor of the Wall Street Journal has resigned. Rebekah Brooks, Editor of News of the World has resigned, and the paper has been shuttered. Murdoch has withdrawn his bid for BSkyB (but still owns some 31%). It really doesn’t look good for Mr Murdoch or his son, James. We should be pleased that these illegal shenanigans are being exposed. The last thing we want is a news service that is committing illegal acts. I know this will be very hurtful to many here at The Blaze, but, again, if Mr Murdoch’s organizations are involved in criminal activities, we should know about them.

How about Bachmann suing the activist for breach of confidentiality? When a person comes into a counseling session it is meant to be kept between the person and the counselor. On top of that, if the person asks to be cured of something it is within every right of the counselor to try anything they can to help that person.

I am so tired of gay activists and radicals doing everything they can to twist and spin a news story in order to try and bring a candidate that threatens them down. They are terrorists in their own right. Being gay is a choice, stop throwing it in my face at every turn. I do not accept your choice and you ARE NOT equal to me in any way, shape, or form. You were born with equal rights. The choices you make do not grant you new ones.

I do not really care how you act in the bedroom. Why is it the topic of so many news stories how people act sexually? I don’t share my bedroom activities with you so do not share yours with me.

Michele Bachmann’s Second Quarter Fundraising Completely Bombs
    Posted on July 14 2011 – 10:03 PM

Michele Bachmann’s second-quarter fundraising numbers completely bombed as she only raised $2 million. It’s pretty clear now that she won’t be able to raise a substantial amount of money as a presidential candidate. It’s also 100% clear that the people who donated to her campaign in 2010 didn’t want her to run for the presidency.
So how many hacks in the mainstream and conservative media are purposefully trying to compare Governor Palin’s PAC fundraising with the fundraising done by a presidential campaign? That’s equivalent to comparing a quarterback’s preseason stats with his regular season numbers.

I would think that Rep Bachmann is very happy to have that huge amount. If she continues to raise these sums, she’ll have one hundred million pretty soon. Then she can use that to raise another one hundred million and it will be a snowball effect and pretty soon she’ll have hundreds of millions. Let‘s get Andrew Breitbart in here and let’s clear this up once and for all.

What kind of argument would you make if the video were edited to make him look like he was calling gay people “barbarians”? I’m pretty sure he would release the original footage if he had it.

This story is dead in the water. There’s no scandal here: the man came into a Christian clinic, asks for their services and then claims there’s a scandal about it? If that‘s all Bachmann’s opponents can come up with, then that’s pretty sad.

They can‘t ruffle Michelle so they’re going after the husband. They have nothing else to run on. Because their policies have failed. So they have to attack the candidates themselves, then when that doesn’t work then they go after the family. The Democrats are just like UNIONS. They have no reason to survive so they have to attack the credibility of their opponents.

Just like many of the people here go after Michelle Obama for no reason? They have nothing else to run on so they attack the candidates themselves?

Are you so deluded that you can’t see past the hypocrisy of your political party?

To be fair Heavy Duty, when you say, “The Democrats are just like UNIONS. “, you might recall that we live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the biggest UNION in the world. Saying that the Democrats are just like a UNION is a COMPLIMENT. Also, how about this too: MARRIAGE IS A UNION. The President, all Presidents, give a Constitutionally mandated STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. Really.

      ********
His PHD is from a correspondence school in Cincinnati. He is certainly not a ‘doctor’ in the medical sense, and very barely so in the academic sense.

      That’s why I did NOT say “M.D.”

Even though both Bachmanns possess the very lowest caliber of educational achievement, (except for Michele’s tax certificate from William & Mary), it is still a LOT of work to get a doctorate. It requires hard work and implies maturity.

So I am shocked they decided to let these “small time” Pray Away the Gay“ and ”Barbarian” allegations escalate (and surely dominate ALL the Sunday talk Shows) by providing such obvious “challenges” to the press, who will now “be forced” to defend the original story – or at least TROT it out a few more times.

I think the Bachmanns really DO believe everything they do or say – no matter how “bat s h i crazy.” it just saddens me to watch them train wreck in real time.

I think Sarah will comment on this next to make Michele look smaller.

Please support Michele and her Campaign.

“But, if it shows Becker asking fervently for Christian counseling to alleviate his same-sex attraction, it will substantiate Bachmann‘s claim that such treatment comes at the patient’s request.”
Yea, I wont hold my breath until the unedited video comes out. Becker comes in and says “cure me of being a gay” and they are wrong for trying? It’s what the customer asked for!

So paying someone for a service doesn’t make you a customer? You must have attended the same economic school as Obama. No wonder adding 3.6 Trillion in debt in less than 3 years doesn’t make Obama responsible for anything. You as well as Obama are clueless.
