Marine Told She Can’t Wear Uniform to Her High School Graduation

Lindsay Starr graduated early, joined the Marines, headed off to spend three months at boot camp and now all she’s asking for is a chance to wear her Marine dress blues to her high school graduation ceremony. Her high school’s answer? Absolutely not.
North Allegheny High School, located in Wexford, Pennsylvania, has a strict graduation policy under which all students must wear school colors and a cap and gown if they plan to walk across the stage to claim their diplomas. Despite efforts to change officials’ minds, Starr has been told that there is absolutely no chance the district will budge.
Some students and teachers have privately voiced support for the young Marine. Starr maintains that the school‘s position isn’t right and she’s being very vocal about the matter:
“I’m just trying to show pride in what I belong to now. I belong to the United States Marine Corps as a 17-year-old. Like, c’mon, now…We’re here for you, we’re here to serve our country. We’re here to protect the freedoms that you enjoy, public schools – you enjoy that freedom because someone went out and died for it.”
Watch the following KDKA-TV video report for more:
In response to the controversy, the school issued a statement that said, “We just don’t do it. The required dress is cap and gown.” What do you think? Should the school make an exception and allow Starr to wear her uniform?

As a United States Marine that’s one of the freedoms and rights you have sworn to defend and protect. You,re now a US Marine so act like one !

So if Pres Obama goes to the school, or Hiliary, or June bug Napoliano, or Bite me Biden goes to the school, they have to wear a cap and gown and school colors. After all, this terrific young woman is a representative of the Federal Government. If they don’t have to comply, neighter should she have to. Posted on June 9, 2011 at 8:11pmI salute her enthusiasm to show her pride in being a Marine, and if we were talking about a function where Formal Dress were appropriate (Suit, Tuxedo, Dress, etc), then I would be 100% in support of her wearing her Dress Blues; however, the UNIFORM of her Graduation Ceremony is a Cap & Gown. Not for the sake of controversy, but I agree with the school. Diverting from the stated dress guidelines to allow her Marine Dress Blues would set a precedent that could then be exploited by others in the future. The rights and freedoms that she is taking pride in protecting is based on the concept of Equal Justice. Allowing an exception in this regard would not be EQUAL justice, it would be SOCIAL justice. Consider what your position would be if this article were about a student wanting to wear a full Burqa, or a Hijab, or a Bikini, or a La Raza T-Shirt? Don’t get me wrong: I’m not equating service in the Marine Corps or her pride in that service to being a member of La Raza, but it’s an issue of precedent. One exception, even for the best of intentions, opens the door others to exploit in the future. That’s just the way I see it.

Posted on June 9, 2011 at 8:50pmThe arguement that wearing her uniform (if allowed), would open the door to all sorts of things, isn’t entirely true. If the school can make a policy of “only cap and gown” it can make an exception for active duty military personel to wear their uniforms if they choose. The military isn’t a religion.
I have seen many graduations and there are always students wearing non-“offical” items like leis, a parent’s grad tassel, a friends pin, etc…
But in all things, it is important that we choose our battles, and I don’t see that this is really one that needs to be fought. She could wear a Marine Corps patch or pin (big one) and not create a situation that will cause this big event in so many other students lives, to be overshadowed by controversy. If she’s smart enough to graduate early, and honorable enough to be a Marine, I‘m sure she’s mature enough to understand the situation and how others are affected…..Semper Fi girl, you’re a Marine, and they always do what’s best for others.

Posted on June 9, 2011 at 8:05pmActually you are completely… wrong. First of all, she is a Marine. And as a PUBLIC school, funded by the government, they can set a responsible dress code, but it would be a violation of federal law and government policy to forbid an off duty member of the military from wearing their dress uniform to an official government function of ANY level. The school is wrong here. And this isn’t about taking orders. Schools don’t issue orders. Military issues orders. She doesn’t work for the school, and they owe her a diploma, and they owe her the respect she is deserving of.
The school doesn’t get a choice on this. It isn’t a private school. It is funded with tax payer dollars. They don’t get to say. We do.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 6:45amThe problem with that supposition wingnut, as it sounds that you are refering to the Hatch Act more specifically, is that it applies to events of a political nature. This is the complete list of uniform regs for wearing in public can be found here:
http://www.marcorsyscom.usmc.mil/sites/mcub/pages/uniform%20regs%20chapters/Chapter%2011_files/Chapter%2011.asp
Although given part 1
(1) At any meeting or demonstration which is a function of, or sponsored by an organization, association, movement, group, or combination of persons which the Attorney General of the United States has designated, pursuant to E.O. 10450, as amended as totalitarian, fascist, communist, or subversive, or as having adopted a policy of advocating or approving the commission of acts of force or violence to deny others their rights under The Constitution of the United States, or as seeking to alter the form of Government of the United States by unconstitutional means.

The second that she gets her diploma, just rip off the gown and walk down from the stage in her uniform. Once she gets her diploma there is no way that they can take it back away from her. North Allegheny has already caved to the bad publicity and decided to allow her to wear her uniform. I was actually on the school’s side originally, but now they’ve lost my respect by giving in to pressure.
They had a sensible policy in place which treated everyone equally…no exceptions. Isn’t that we we want? Rules to apply to everyone equally?
She should not be wearing her dress uniform to a non-military function. She’s wrong. The school was right. But now, North Allegheny has just established a precedence for others to challenge the rule in the future. If they caved here, they’ll cave again…and then the rule has no meaning whatsoever.
Bad decision.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 7:23amI vote cap and gown. You make an exception for the uniform and where do you draw the line. The cap and gown is the symbol of graduation. She is lucky to get to go through the ceremony. She could have been deployed already.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 7:33amThe school should have allowed exceptions for exceptional students. Those who are willing to subject themselves to Military discipline -especially those who have fulfilled and surpassed the required subjects
Report Post »ought be allowed wear their Military uniform wherever they choose upon successful completion of Basic
Training. Military training so far exceeds any high school accomplishment strict attention to “we just don’t do it” only diminishes the schoolin this case.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 8:19amShe should wear the gown over her uniform. Then just as she accepts her diploma, take off the gown…..what are they gonna do? lol

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 8:55amwhat sweet story on the tyranny conformity.
MIZLFLAME- Yes, why should she stand out? Why ever should the school reward exceptionalism?
State educators want to turn out workers…….
Down with the individual!
She should write an open letter to the local newspaper and skip the ceremony.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 9:08amas a former Marine. I say she wears her cap and gown. Her new life as a Marine requires Immediate obedience to orders. Now were does it give a boot the chance to ask one question or argue the idea of the order. IF she took your advice of (what are they gona do to ya) she could get an article 15 or worse a Court Martial as this is not an “Authorized event” and the Marine Corps has Stated “we will not get involved as obeying orders are part of being a Marine”

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 9:56amI agree that it’s not a big deal, BUT it isn’t a big deal to just where the cap and gown. The educational system has enough problems, but this isn’t one of them.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 10:07amI think it is a good idea. Wear her uniform under her cap and gown. If you allow anyone to wear what they wanted that could open a bad can of worms. I want to wear my gang garb.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 12:53pmI’m a vet but I kinda think the school has the right of determination in this case. At her Marine Corps. graduation she wore her uniform and could not have opted to wear a cap and gown instead. Her HS graduation is a civilian affair and the traditional cap and gown is worn.. If the school has an ROTC unit that graduates in uniform then she should be allowed to wear her uniform even if she is not in the ROTC unit..

Posted on June 11, 2011 at 4:31pmA US Marine should wear the Marine uniform with pride and honor. The High School has it’s rules and most rules are made for reasons sometimes unknown to us. A High School graduation is a time to display pride and honor to the school and it’s graduates.
To have UNIFORMITY all graduates are required to wear the school cap and gown and the school colors. That should be simple enough for anyone to undersatnd.
Being a US Marine from 1954-1966 I fully understand Lindsay’s pride and desire to wear the Marine uniform at her High School graduation ceremony. However, it’s not about the Marine Corps but about the school and ALL the graduates. Don’t disgrace the Marine Corps Code of Honor to God, Country, Unit and Corps by breaking the school’s rule.
A good Marine always follows the rules, whether they make any sense or not. Wear the Marine uniform with honor and pride AFTER the ceremony and proudly take pictures in BOTH uniforms, cap and gown ( also a uniform of honor and pride) and Marine Corps Blues. Semper Fi
