Marines Get Training on Accepting Gay Recruits

SAN DIEGO (AP) — If a Marine spots two men in his battalion kissing off-duty at a shopping mall, he should react as if he were seeing a man and woman. If he turns on the television news to see a fellow Marine dressed as a civilian and marching in a parade with a banner that reads, “Support Gays and Lesbians in the Military!” he should accept it as a free right of expression.
Prescriptions for those possible scenarios are being played out at Marine bases as the military prepares to allow gays to openly serve, ending a 17-year-old policy commonly known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Training for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines began early this year and is expected to finish by summer’s end. The repeal goes into effect 60 days after the president, defense secretary and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certify that lifting the ban won‘t hurt the military’s ability to fight.
“These changes are about policy,” states briefing material for Marine instructors. “The policy is about adherence to orders and behavior, and not about beliefs.”
The latest round of training material asks Marines to consider their reactions to a wide range of scenarios, from seeing a member “hanging around” a gay bar to hearing locker-room jokes from others who refuse to shower in front of gays. Members of the 1st Marine Logistics Group report to class Thursday at Camp Pendleton.
There is nothing wrong with “hanging around” a gay bar, the materials state. The officer who witnesses the loud locker-room banter aimed at gays and lesbians should remind the Marines any discrimination or harassment is inappropriate.
For those who oppose the new policy, the Marine Corps says it doesn’t expect anyone to change their personal beliefs. Still, everyone must follow orders.
“You remain obligated to follow orders that involve interaction with others who are gay or lesbian, even if an unwillingness to do so is based on strong, sincerely held moral or religious beliefs,” the training material states.
A top-notch recruiter who opposes the new policy cannot refuse a promising applicant on grounds of sexual orientation but might be considered for another assignment and, at the discretion of the Navy secretary, may be granted early discharge.
Chaplains who preach at base chapels that homosexuality is a sin are entitled to express their religious beliefs during worship.
The Marines expect to finish training on the new policy by June 1, Gen. James Amos, the Marine Corps commandant, testified in Congress earlier this month.
Amos testified last year that permitting gays to openly serve could disrupt smaller combat units and distract leaders from preparing for battle. When he appeared this month before the House Armed Services Committee, he said he had been looking for problems that might arise under the new policy and hadn’t found any “recalcitrant pushback.”
“There has not been the anxiety over it from the forces in the field,” he said.

Persons of the same sex cannot mate or reproduce. They implies they are not intended to exist as such. To force people to accept what they know is evil, is evil in itself.

Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion

Everyone is capable of being a pervert, including you. So why don’t you get off that high horse of yours buddy. If you were to make that order of not accepting perverts into your company (as a company commander) you’d have NO ONE in under your command.
I can tell you stories all day on how perverted some of the guys in my unit was. How’s this, gang banging girls in the barracks every night of the week. That‘s heterosexual fun in all it’s glory. Everheard of the company tshirt rules? Give a girl a company T shirt if they’ve had sex with three people from that company. A sweater if they bang six. At 10 they get a barret.

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 4:11pm@Mandors, As noted above, Rome fell after becoming Christian. In fact, a lot of the pagans at the time blamed the “decline of values” on the Christians! St. Augustine answered these claims in his great City of God.
But people like Gibbons (who was anti-Catholic) agreed with the ancient pagans in his Rise and Fall.
Also, it’s important to note that the Vandals and several other barbarian groups that sacked Rome were actually Christians.
I think the problem didn’t have much to do with the Christianity of the Romans, per se, but rather the changes in population, society and class that made the Roman system self-destruct.

In my last unit, there was this guy. He was a cheerleader in college. Did it not for the girls but because he loved cheerleading. He also loved Twilight. We made fun of him a lot. He never admitted to being gay, but it was obvious. No matter how much crap we gave him, he still put on that uniform and he still had my back outside the wire. He was the gunner for my truck for several months on my last deployment and he saved our asses more than once during a handful of TICs. As gay as he may have acted or could have been, he never hit on me or anyone else. He conducted himself professionally and served his country with pride and honor.
He had my back when TSHTF and I’m damn proud to call him a brother. More than I could ever say to the petty commenters on this website.

The point isn’t about gays serving. I think they should if they want to. The issue is the slippery slope we head down when we start accomodating, specializing and focusing on differences rather than similarities…like us all being green.
When the military goes PC, I question the future decision making ability for the very difficult decisions that will need to be made to win conflicts.

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 12:31pmDestroying the current military culture is the goal. You cannot have a successful overthrow of the government with a blood and guts voluntary military to stop it. There is a big difference between serving silently and openly. Silently is like AS’ situation. Openly is an agenda, and you can’t have cohesion with an agenda.
I’m sure that SOME homosexuals wish to serve their country, but I’m just as sure that many of them like being surrounded by young, fit men with whom they get naked with on a regular basis. Have some common sense.

If I were to be put with a gay roommate, then I let him know that I am not that way, and since sex isn’t allowed in the barracks anyways there is nothing to discuss there. It’s people being close-minded to these people that is the real problem. Allowing women to serve with the men was going to be the downfall of the military. As well as desegregating the military. This is just the next step. And if you say “I don’t want them watching my back because they might be staring at my butt” or anything like that you are too stupid to serve.

I was tired of going outside the wire, wondering if I’ll make it back to base so i can see a photo of my little girl who was growing up without me. I was tired of coming home to have my little girl not even know who I was, to hide behind her mother as I approached her to give her a big hug and kiss to see terror in her eyes as though some random stranger was trying to kidnap her. I’m tired of all the money we spend on the war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and now Lybia and who knows what other countries we participate on some level. I’m tired of going to funerals of 20 something year olds and fathers, whose young children I see crying because even they know they’ll never see their father again. I was tired of everything the war has become. I’m tired of standing there at remembrance ceremonies, pretending to be strong and in control of my feelings but wanting to just open the flood gates of tears for my fallen brothers. I’m sick and tired of it all. Some days I wish I could regain my innocents of war and death. Some days I envy those that don’t have these memories.

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 12:31pm@LEFTFIGHTER What does that matter when it comes to homosexuals openly serving? They will be expected to serve as any other would serve. With courage and professionalism. Sexual assault and sexual misconduct can happen with heterosexual, in fact I think it’s rampant. Everyone talks about wasting time on so many briefs and training events, I lost count of how many safety briefs, safety days, drinking and driving, suicide awareness, sexual assault, don’t use spice/k2, don’t do this, don’t do that…..
What someone’s sexual preference in their off time is their business. If they act unprofessionally while on the clock, wearing the uniform, there’s a problem. The same problem that would happen if it were a heterosexual man making unwanted advances to a heterosexual woman. New policy in regard to this behavior isn’t needed, it already exist.
Act appropriately during work, i don’t care who you have sex with afterwards.

i was so very impressed by your words. a brave american is a brave american, no matter what their sexual orientation. i think it’s despicable that anyone should feel it is their right to be protected by a military where only straight soldiers can admit who they love. i surely hope more military and ex-military take a similar perspective as you. our world would be a better place.

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 12:42pmI know of no one who has not had a gay make a pass at them. A gay making a pass in a military common shower is tantamount to asking for a real fight. I guess they will just have to make up the next day when they are facing the enemy with live ammo.

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 1:04pmSo are they going to reeducate gays about how to handle the jeers and tell them that it is just free expression? Are they going to allow men and women to bunk in the same building or shower together? What about my rights as a straight guy to shower with women? Gays to to stare at my junk so why in the hell am I being discriminated against by not being allowed to stare at females? When does that get the attention of the ACLU?

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 1:18pmDon‘t worry this new training won’t take hold. When I was in the marines I had to go through at least 10 drunk driving classes during the year because people would still drink and drive. The same with “Don’t do Drug” classes. It won’t hold. Marines will be marines.
We even had a lot of classes on not making sexist jokes. Just another class that the marines will enjoy. Heck it will beat going out in the field and running the stupid ranges (range 400 still gives me bad flashbacks).

Report Post »You commented; “I can’t wait to see what the rest of the world is going to have to say about our “gay military!”
With all due respect, our most important (and most effective military) allies wonder what has taken us so long to catch up!
The Israeli armed forces are fully integrated with openly gay men and women who serve with honor and are regarded by the US Pentagon as among the world’s best professional soldiers. The British are Gay & Lesbian-integrated and have openly gay soldiers, sailors and marines in their version of special operations forces, also regarded by American war fighters as elite professionals.
That’s what I meant. There is no such thing as a “gay military,” no country has that. But Seattle has ferry boats.
Thank You Sir

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 1:23pmI also wonder that when the libs talk about slashing the defense budget in half if they will leave these classes (which cost a lot) and sacrifice the new armor underwear that the marines need. I can just hear it now when the officer tells his troops
“since we have to cut the defense budget and still keep the classes so we can learn to accept gays, the POWERS TO BE have reached a consensous that you don’t need the armor underwear….Also we have to ration ammo because of the budget cuts too.”

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 1:36pmOK .. BUT isn’t it that a FEMALE get a higher rank than a man immediately?? and isn’t that they are NOT allowed to date enlisted men?? so ONE of them is in serious trouble if you look at them like a man and a women.. one of them is in trouble.. but WHICH???

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 2:08pm@JDS7171 Armor underwear? I hope that’s a joke. I have never heard of it. Even if they were seriously considering this, I never wore underwear when in uniform. It’s uncomfortable. There’s a reason the term is called “Going Commando.” Not many people I know from my former unit wore underwear as far as I knew. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable this Kevlar weave underwear would feel like. Hell, most of the time, we don’t wear any of the extra armor (shoulder, groin, kidney, etc) so I don’t see why anyone would wear underwear armor.
Even if they did, the funding for a one hour instructional video to demonstrate how to not discriminate against homosexual soldiers is a decimal number compared to the cost to develop, manufacture and distribute multiple pairs of underwear to the two million service members. The you have to consider the costs to DX them and reissue them, etc.
@INDEPENDENTVOTERIL I’ve never heard of a female getting higher rank quicker. Sure, there might be favorites being played, maybe even some sexual favors exchanged. As far as fraternizing goes, if it’s on the enlisted side, it’s more of the difference in rank. I‘ve seen E5’s dating E3′s, or married to each other. Now if that E5 is the E3′s direct line supervisor, there would be problems. If they aren’t even in the same company, not even an issue. Now Officers aren’t suppose to date enlisted, but I think there‘s a similar bypass if they aren’t in the same unit. This is just based on observations not actual UCMJ guidelines.

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 5:07pmTo a normal person homosexuality is disgusting, and the reason it is is because in each of us we have imbeded natural instincts that are programmed into our DNA to react in various ways that are beneficial to our continued existence.
For example, where would we be if the natural instinct at self survival were gone? We react in certain ways to those things that send out danger signals to our subconscious minds telling us that certain things and situations are a threat to our survival, both immediate and long term. Regarding long term survival instincts, without male/female pairings we know instinctlively we would die off as a species. To prevent that, Nature has inculcated into most every one of us a revulsion toward same sex couplings.
Most of us feel deep feelings of distast and revulsion at same sex unions, and it’s perfectly natural to feel that way. Without it we would die off as a species. It has nothing to do with religion.
To say that such feelings are “homophobic” or the product of those who “hate,” in an effort to create an artificial condition whaich is completely against human nature, is just plain stupidity.
The wackos who influence culture now are holding knives to our throats forcing us to go along with their many anti-human nature agendas, and, while they are proving to be effective in the short run, they will ultimately fail. This failure will eventually result in the same kind of backlash every forced agenda has come to throughout history, and that is violence and mayhem when the point of critical mass is reached.
