Markets Cave After ‘Obamacare’ Ruling

Markets are getting hammered:

▼ Dow: -1.11 percent
▼ Nasdaq: -1.67 percent
▼ S&P: -1.11 percent

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Stocks dropped sharply Thursday after the Supreme Court upheld the central provision of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, a requirement that almost all Americans carry health insurance.

The Dow Jones industrial average, which was down about 100 points before the court ruled, fell further and was down 160 points at 11 a.m. EDT.

Markets Cave After Obamacare RulingDow Jones as of 1:30 EST

Health care stocks were down significantly, but bank stocks were the biggest losers in the broader market.

JPMorgan fell the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow average after the New York Times reported that its loss from a complex trade that went wrong could swell to $9 billion, much larger than the bank has acknowledged. The bank had said previously the loss was $2 billion but could get larger. JPMorgan lost $1.10, or 3 percent, to $35.69.

Stocks of major insurance companies fell sharply as analysts sorted through the ruling. UnitedHealth Group declined 3 percent, WellPoint almost 6 percent and AFLAC 1.5 percent.

Hospital chains rose. Hospital Corp. of America was up 7 percent. Quest Diagnostics, which runs laboratories, was up 2.5 percent.

Furthermore, there was little for investors to like in new reports on the U.S. economy.

The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.9 percent in the January-March quarter, according to a new government estimate. Consumer spending, which accounts for a huge part of the economy, grew 2.5 percent, below the previous 2.7 percent estimate. The four-week average of applications for unemployment benefits didn’t decline, a sign that layoffs aren’t easing.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 17 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,314 and the technology Nasdaq composite index was off 47 points at 2,828. That’s a loss of 1.6 percent.

It can only get worse. There is no ‘UP’. I predicted (guessed actually) this last night 6/27 before going to bed. I woke up to a nightmare,, er.. make that an intensification of an existing nightmare. The only consolation I feel now is that there are 300+ million other victims of this POS government. The really sick part is that the part of the population that supports this will be eventually the true victims. So you may get health care.. But you have no job, entitlements have run out, cities are bankrupting, and there is no land for you to homestead to grown your own food. In other words millions are screwed. I would prefer to be back in the early 1800s and a life expectancy of 40, which means I’d already be at peace in the grave.

I hope every conservative shuts down there business. Socialists want to wage war on America. Let’s see how they do it with no income. Show all the democrats what they have done. I just saw on TV Home Depot will shut down if Obama gets voted in again, they can’t remain in Business. I hope every other conservative company follows suit. Let’s see this unemployment rate rise to 50+ percent. I say let’s stick it to them. Another thing I won’t “WORK” I already only have a part time job (ALL I CAN FIND) and I live in Utah. So if the government wants to take care of me so bad, I’m gonna let them. I will not work for 2 weeks to pull a measly 800.00 a month and have to turn around and spend 400 of that on insurance. I WON”T do it. So let’s see how much money the government has.

I say every conservative pull out from whatever they are doing. Business, Blogging, News. “EVERTYTHING” and just stick it to Obama and his commie buddies. Another thing I am going to vote Obama in 2012. Because I want “EVERY” DEMOCRATE to feel my pain, and they obviously don’t feel it yet. I have been called every name in the book, I don’t care anymore. For those who say it is un-American I contend there is no more America. The only America that is left is in our hearts.

This comment is for lapitup…. so you’re a republican , you’re conservative , you’re for low taxes on businesses, few social programs , at least until you need one. And when‘s the last time that we as american citizen’s have had any kind of a universal health plan?? Right, never. Going to the doctor is pricey, and as I get closer to retirement age I suspect that I will be needing to make a visit more frequently(that is generally a part of aging) . Maybe this isn’t perfect, but it’s a start , and it’s a hell of a lot better than any other president has done.

Keep remembering that Obama was elected by only 30% of registered voters. There was a 58% turnout and of the people who actually voted, 52% voted for Obama. Multiply 0.58 and 0.52 and you get 0.30. Just 30% of registered voters saddled us with Obama. Forget about the polls and just vote. He has not gained followers.

That makes perfect sense! I agree Ron Paul is out of touch with the fabric the MSM portrays as the real world. Between jersey shore and junk news Im glad he is out of touch and focuses on the real issues like taxation, spending, deficits, overseas militarization of the world, sound currency and fiscal responsibility. I too am out of touch with reality along with countless other soldiers I have talked to over the years who regardless of what your favorite junk news tells you support Ron Paul. Remember — the Queen’s East India Trading Company is still in full swing – doesn‘t matter what the ’front companies’ call themselves — still ROOTED in the Crown’s commerce. Charlie Brown (aka “Chuck”) That’s called an ebb and flow. Look at the graph again. There was an initial knee jerk reaction to the ruling that was announced at 10:07am (the dip) then a little bit of balancing out as the free market is known for, then a free fall. But this steadily righted it’s self yet again, though we are certainly NOT on the same plateau as we were before the ruling.

Investors are freaked, and as well they should be.

Our country needs a good old fashioned heavy hand of the judgment of God. Fire cleanses and fire purifies. I don’t want Obama or the world elites to bring judgment to the United States, I want God to do it so people will know without a shadow of a doubt what is going on. There will still be those who will shake their fists and curse God when it all happens. True believers need to get backbone and start to ask the Lord to bring judgement for all the murder of the unborn children and perverse sexual lifestyles and idolatry. Maybe people in our country want our freedoms for the wrong reason and that is why God did not answer prayer for the health care bill to be overturned? Why should God answer our prayers when we are all doubleminded. “A doubleminded man shall be unstable in all his ways and let not that man think he shall receive anything off God”.

Just what is it that you think just happened today? The loss of our freedom is only one small phase of our judgement. Glenn Beck has been trying to tell us this for over 3 years now, ever since he began the faith, hope, charity (LOVE) phase of his shows. This is just one more warning to us; today, we lost our freedom, but we can still turn back to Him and He will save us. But we, as a nation, have to turn back to Him. I‘m just hoping it’s not too late

What IS surprising is the markets are down as little as they are. If not for support from the Federal Reserve in the form of massive injections of money the losses would have been a blood bath. It might not be the end of the earth but you can see it from here.

You are correct about the markets. According to http://www.philsgang.com and Phil Grande, the Fed pumps about $4.5B a day into the five major NY banks to have them speculate in the market to give people the APPEARANCE of normality.

@blackcrow – and I will bet you not one legitimate small business “shutters its windows” as a result. All just posturing and BS spread by sites like this that appeal to the lowest common denominator.

How many of you Blazers figure that Obama not only knew in advance (by many a month) of the outcome, but informed his capitalist cronies so they could sell short on the market? Soros is also in on this mess somehow (marketwise); he never fails to make a profit where such an opportunity exists.

When you figure the largest holders of equities (Stocks) are Insurance companies and pension funds and both are on VERY shaky ground right now it is no wonder the government and the federal reserve are doing everything in their power to prop up the markets. Remember back in 08 AIG (American Insurance Group) was one of the big firms that got the first bail out. They were taking a bath in the equities markets and could have taken down the whole house of cards if they had been forced to liquidate their equities portfolio.

The ride is going to get rough.

Wait until the unemployment numbers for July come in. Obama’s not going to be thinking he won this decision.

I heard something about unemployment falling slightly.
I really hate to say this but I hope I heard wrong.
It’s really a great obama accomplishment that americans
have to root against their country to hopefully save it.

We realize that Obama didn’t actually win anything except the title of the president who just laid the largest tax in history on this nation. Can’t wait for the left to get slapped hard with that one!

Yeah, we’ve just been handed a heap of lemons, and we’re going to have to make lemonade, but if the Romney campaign doesn‘t nail down the message we’re going to lose our @$$e$ in the coming year. We’re going to need to highlight the impact on the markets, private industry, unemployment, and the fact that the Marxist-in-chief insisted it wasn’t a tax.

Klansman lotterwillbeshooters, time to lay some facts on your racist face! A few
hundred points down one day, a few hundred up the next. The market is still 500 points above its trading range… Translation, the market would have to drop 600 to 700 points in order to make any case that this decision from the court had ANY impact.. You racists pathetic attempt to blame this on President Obama OR the law is pathetic and shows how sick in the head you racists are!
Maybe you’re trolling or something, but it’s just so ridiculous that so many Americans think Obama is some sort of radical Marxist. Maybe he’s left wing in America, but in the real, non-racist world he’s really more of a moderate.

Sorry, as always, you FAIL again.

The American experiment is over. Liberty has been destroyed by 6 “justices” who no longer stand for justice at all. Tyranny is the order of the day. This generation has said so long to individual liberty and hello to totalitarianism. It won’t be long before the government dictates to us how/what to eat, drink and live if you want to keep your Obamacare that is. What “tax” is next. tax for not buying an american car? tax for shopping at Walmart? tax for not eating your brocolli? tax for breathing air? pandora’s box is now wide open. the governemtn can make you buy anything they want. buy a “green” car or pay a $50K tax. Who’s going to stop them? not the Supreme wusses, that’s for sure

Right now there may be only one final line in the sand that can stop Obama when the dictatorship comes to fruition – WE THE PEOPLE, who are armed. I pray it does not come to that, but I do see us on the edge of a revolution; one initiated by Obama.
