WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A mother in Malaysia greeted her dead son. People in Manila left roses for the victim who helped give them homes. And mourners in Tokyo stood before a piece of steel from ground zero, remembering the 23 bank employees who never made it out alive.

A decade after 9/11, the day that changed so much for so many people, the world’s leaders and citizens paused to reflect Sunday. But there were also those – including a former Malaysian prime minister – who reiterated old claims that the U.S. government itself was behind the attacks.

From Sydney to Paris, formal ceremonies paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 who perished from more than 90 countries. And, in a reminder that threats remain, Swedish police said four people were arrested Sunday on suspicion of preparing a terror attack as authorities in Washington and New York beefed up security in response to intelligence about possible plans for a car bomb attack.

For some people, the pain never stops. In Malaysia, Pathmawathy Navaratnam woke up Sunday in her suburban Kuala Lumpur home and did what she’s done every day for the past decade: wish her son Vijayashanker Paramsothy “Good morning.”

The 23-year-old financial analyst was killed in the attacks on New York.

“He is my sunshine. He has lived life to the fullest, but I can’t accept that he is not here anymore,” said Navaratnam. “I am still living, but I am dead inside.”

In Manila, dozens of former shanty dwellers offered roses, balloons and prayers for another 9/11 victim, American citizen Marie Rose Abad. The neighborhood used to be a shantytown that reeked of garbage. But in 2004, Abad’s Filipino-American husband Rudy built 50 brightly colored homes, fulfilling his late wife’s wish to help impoverished Filipinos.

The village has since been named after her.

“It’s like a new life sprang from the death of Marie Rose and so many others,” said villager Nancy Waminal.

Players from the American Eagles rugby team were among the first to mark the anniversary at a memorial service in the town of New Plymouth in New Zealand. The players, who are participating in the Rugby World Cup tournament, listened to a speech by U.S. ambassador David Huebner, whose brother Rick survived the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“We watched live on television the brutal murder of 3,000 individuals,” Huebner said. “We reacted with near unanimous horror and sadness.”

The Sept. 11 attacks spawned many conspiracy theories around the world, especially among Islamists who allege American or Israeli involvement.

Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, a vitriolic critic of the West, wrote on his blog that Arab Muslims are incapable of “planning and strategizing” such attacks. He added “it is not unthinkable” for former President George W. Bush to have lied about who was responsible for 9/11.

He wrote that the World Trade Center twin towers “came down nicely upon themselves” and looked more like “planned demolition of buildings” than collapse, he wrote.

In Pakistan, supporters of an Islamist political party staged anti-U.S. protests to mark the anniversary, holding up banners that repeated conspiracy theories. The protests by about 100 people were held in the capital Islamabad and Multan city.

But little attention was paid to such events and comments on a day dominated by sorrow and pain of the memories.

In Japan, families gathered in Tokyo to pay their respects to the 23 Fuji Bank employees who never made it out of their World Trade Center office. A dozen of the workers who died were Japanese.

One by one, family members laid flowers in front of an enclosed glass case containing a small section of steel retrieved from Ground Zero. They clasped their hands and bowed their heads. Some took pictures. Others simply stood in solemn silence. There were no tears, just reflection.

Sydney resident Rae Tompsett, 81, said she’s never felt angry over the murder of her son Stephen Tompsett, 39, a computer engineer who was on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower when it was hit by a hijacked plane.

“No, not anger,” she said. “Sorrow. Sorrow that the people who did this believed they were doing something good.”

The retired school teacher and her husband Jack, 92, were among more than 1,000 people who packed Sydney’s Roman Catholic cathedral St. Marys for a special multi-faith service.

“It’s incredible that it is 10 years – it feels a bit like yesterday,” Tompsett said.

South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, conveying his “deepest condolences” to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy, their bereaved families and the American public. Lee, whose country is one of the strongest allies of the United States, called the attacks “unpardonable” and praised decade-long U.S. efforts to fight terrorism.

And leaders in Pakistan, which has been a victim of al-Qaida terrorism but is also accused of not doing enough to crack down on militants, said they joined the people of the U.S. in honoring the memory of those killed 10 years ago.

“As a country that has been severely affected by terrorism, we reaffirm our national resolve to strengthening international cooperation for the elimination of terrorism,” the foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, authorities in New York and Washington are increasing security for their 9/11 memorial services after intelligence agents got a tip that three al-Qaida members could be planning to set off a car bomb in one of the cities. Officials have found no evidence any terrorists have sneaked into the country.

The Taliban marked the anniversary by vowing to keep fighting against U.S. forces in Afghanistan and saying they had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“Each year, 9/11 reminds the Afghans of an event in which they had no role whatsoever,” a statement e-mailed to news organizations said. “American colonialism shed the blood of tens of thousands of miserable and innocent Afghans.”

Hours later, a Taliban suicide bomber in a large truck blew it up at the gate of a NATO combat outpost in eastern Afghanistan, killing two civilians and injuring 77 U.S. troops.

The U.S. and its allies invaded Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, after the Taliban who then ruled the country refused to hand over the Sept. 11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. The al-Qaida leader was at the time living in Afghanistan, where the terror network retained training camps and planned attacks against the U.S. and other countries. Bin Laden was killed four months ago at his Pakistan hideout by U.S. forces.

“Now that Osama bin Laden is dead, my brother’s soul will finally rest in peace,” said Yambem Laba, whose younger brother Jupiter Yambem was among the victims.

Jupiter, an Indian, was manager at the “Roof of the World Restaurant in the World Trade Center.

About 100 family members and close friends gathered at his ancestral home in the northeastern state of Manipur for prayers Sunday.

“Osama is dead but the threat from al-Qaida has not ended,” Laba said.

“For me personally, the events aboard Flight 93, that went down in a field in Shanksville, PA, are the things from which we must take heart concerning 9/11. That airliner was full of ordinary Americans who did on their own the most outrageous thing: Rather than wait for the inevitable, they took actions directed not only at the chance of saving their own lives, but with the knowledge that whatever the outcome, they would surely save others. That moment of decision, in appraisal of their immediate situation, should be considered carefully by every American as this clash of civilizations continues. What are the choices? Shall we fight, or wait to be slaughtered? Shall we pretend that if only we’ll huddle quietly, we will be left alone and alive? Shall we recognize that we are now the front line in a war between two civilizations, and act in the name of ours?”

What is Freedom? Is it an Idea? Is it a Noun? Is it a Verb? Is it Truth? Is Freedom just a Theory?
Can we define Freedom to another? For another? Defend Freedom on behalf of another, without really knowing what Freedom is? Ten years after Freedom came under attack; ten years after we vowed to defend Freedom, do we have Freedom? How many will live for Freedom, not only for yourself, but for those who have died in the name of Freedom? Find Your Freedom America. Find Peace.

We are unfortunately still without freedom from such a threat, as we as a nation surrendered.

“After 9/11, we should have known that the war we faced was greater and wider than one group of thugs sheltering in a desert wasteland half a world away. Our leaders should have told us, and they should have prepared us for all the ugly truths about the nature of the war against us, and the philosophical base from which it was being waged. We should have learned it ourselves and demanded a thorough war, but now we arrive on the eve of that event’s tenth anniversary, and still we cower and huddle in fear at the credible threats looming over us. ”

The ‘American Experiment’ is the greatest thing in all human history, that men and women of good character can truly govern themselves. The idea was novel at the time, and We the People made it happen, we Americans gave the world something totally new and we proved it can work.

To say that 9/11 changed America is a gross understatement. It could well prove to be the lynchpin in a series of events that will determine the course of American history in the 21st century. Like the aggression and rise of nationalism in the early 20th century, which led to World War I, World War II, and the Cold War with it’s Korean and Vietnam wars, the 9/11 attacks and the Islamic Jihadism that spawned them will have lasting and profound effects on America for generations.

Wow. I had seen this type of flag before and didn’t give it a second thought….until I read your comment. So I did some research which is going to require tons more of research! That is ok, because over the last 10 years I have been re-educating myself about our true American Heritage.
The gold fringe means captured….meaning the original, organic, true flag of the Republic was “captured” by the de facto government (Democracy).
We have two forms of government colliding with one another. Republic ( the original) vs Democracy. Americans wrongly think (So did I for most of my life) that what we have today in America is a republic. It is SUPPOSED to be a republic. It was MEANT to be a republic. Democracy is a tiny step from socialism; socialism is communism. Listen to when politicians or anyone talks about “spreading democracy around the world”. As I sit and watch some of the Fox News footage of the attack on us ten years ago, I can not help but wonder. Only eight short years later, after an absolutely horrific attack, America went to the polls, and elected B A R A C K H U S S E I N O B A M A.

It has been three years the election, and I am still dumb founded at the absolute stupidity of America, to get attacked, then turn around and elect the enemy at the President of the United States. While I am not a big fan of John McCain, America had a choice between a Naval Grad, Vietnam Vet, prior prisoner of war, and experienced politician, and instead, they voted for a junior senator with no leadership experience, a man who is freinds with a known terrorist that blew up bombs in our subway. We elected a man who sat in the congregation of Rev Wright, and anti- American, Jew hating, black liberation theologist.

I do not understand this stupidity. Especially when you think of the lives lost ten years ago today, and the blood shed by our military for ten years since.

America is about to pay a huge price for this evil it has done. You can not elect the enemy, and it not effect you for decades to come,. or literally destroy you from the inside out.

Hillary Clinton towards the end of her campaign a few months before the election was stepping up the attacks on BO’s lack of character, lack of experience, lack of traditional American values, poor choices in his personal affiliations. And she was moving rapidly up in the polls and I thought might have even won the nomination of her party just given more time.

Had McCain slammed Obama continually throughout his campaign (using the Hillary model) and stopped the ***** footing around and avoiding telling the truth to America about BO on the very large stage… it might be him here today in the White House. The so called Maverick was acting like a feeble old fart afraid to enter into the mudslinging fray. I think Obama needed to have the mud slung at him and we might (might) be better off for it today… who knows. We can only hope one of these Candidates we have running now will remind America what real P‘sOS the Obama’s and their ilk really are. No ***** footing around this time.

Right you are. The real villain in this debacle is the Media, it is the media that would not allow a bad word about Obama. It was the media that forced out the good candidates and made us take McCain, the only one in my opinion that Obama could defeat.
Beware, because the media wants Romney to win, they are taking out of contention the ones they fear….Bachman, Paul, Newt, ect. ect. by disassociation. Without media coverage, a candidate will die. Notice the moves during the last debate, where only Perry, and Romney were asked most of the questions, and given most of the time.
We have to stop being a tool for these evil bastards, vote for the one that moves you and not the one that the media says you should vote for.

      @fematower7
Only idiots believe it was an inside job. The blinders and tunnel vision needed to see things your way are sold at the same store you can get your Big Foot souvenirs, as a matter of fact your vision won’t even allow for the terrorist admit they did it. Are they part of the conspiracy too?
I guess it is OK to hate your country, but at least have a solid reason as to why.

why on earth would anyone tie 911 truth with a hatred foe America ?
Quit the opposite, unless you believe that America should be based on Lies and
      secret banking deals.
I am trying to save America for my children and yours
because if I am right and 911 was an inside job and the Federal reserve banking
Cartel does own our souls, then what future do you offer our children ????
Fear and Hate ? Enslavement to the Chinese or other major powers ?
Do I hate America because from day one I have opposed NFTA and GATT ?
or do the Bushes and Clintons hate America for destroying our children’s futures with unfair trade agreements ?
Blazers who attack by calling names or references to a tired cliche’
like Caves,Tinfoil and troll, Please Grow up and at least debate like you are an informed adult.

We as US citizens should be UP IN ARMS over the sheer horror those inside the towers were forced to endure at the hands of islamic terrorists. Instead we blindly stumble on with our lives, allowing government to regulate us right into the pits of he!! and fight in wars we can never win.

I challenge each one of us to find our lost backbones and begin to make a stand against the horror of B. H. Obama and his blood thirsty regulations and unAmerican attitudes. I cringe when anyone puts the word “president” before his name. All this is IMHO, of course……
