Maryland Governor Signs Bill Legalizing Gay Marriage

Maryland Governor Martin OMalley Legalizes Gay MarriageMaryland Governor Martin O’Malley has signed a measure legalizing gay marriage, joining seven other states and the District of Columbia.

The Maryland Democrat signed the bill Thursday, a week after its final passage in the Legislature. According to the Associated Press, the new law is set to take effect in January 2013.

Opponents, however, are expected to petition the law to a referendum on the November ballot.

“More so than equal rights, more so than fairness, more so than justice or injustice, the word that allowed us to move forward was really dignity: The dignity of every home, the dignity of a job, the dignity of work, the dignity of every family, the dignity of every individual,” O’Malley was quoted as saying. “When we succeed, if this goes to a referendum, I believe it will be because of that evolution of the public discourse.”

AP reports referendum organizers will need to collect almost 56,000 signatures to put the measure before voters and are expected to rely heavily on churchgoers to achieve that goal. Some pastors in predominantly black churches have begun using their sermons to push the referendum.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Good for Marry-Land! I bet they find that it doesn’t actually destroy traditional marriage. Now the homosexuals can also participate in divorce as well. It’ll be in interesting to see if the divorce rate is any different.

Not sure, I think more of their marriages will be open marriages judging from their own comments.

They argue with a 50% divorce rate that they couldn’t ruin the institution of marriage by being able to marry. If their divorce rate is 55% they will say it is in the margin of error & there is no problem.

It is like there was an embargo against a nation, which failed to do other countries breaking it. The ‘embargo’ against gay marriage is failing & will fail. Once gays get married I suspect they won’t like it. After a while enough stats will be collected & we will see that it is wrong.

I kind of think after 3 or so generation of gay marriage, the whole gay thing will go away.

It will take academia longer than the LGBT population to figure out. they will have to repair the standing of their professions.

Walkabout, to address the harm-to-marriage issue, how can gays possibly harm the institution of marriage more than straight people have? Let’s look at all the ways straight people harm marriage and families daily. They shack up and expect the world to treat them as if they’ve made a commitment, they intentionally create babies without an intact, married mom and dad, they marry frivolously with no concept of the commitment they are entering into, they treat their spouses horribly, utterly ignoring the vows they took, they cheat on their spouses, they get bored and move on to find their happiness, usually after creating children, they shack up or remarry with no thought to the devastating effects on their children. I’m sure I could come up with several more, but you get the point. Marriage as been horribly mistreated by the whole of the populace for generations. You could argue the origins of the attacks on marriages as being the progressive movement, feminism, the welfare state, or all of the above, but it’s been going on a long, long time.
I’m a gay man, and I’d be willing to bet I hold marriage in far higher regard than the majority of posters here or of people in this country. I have longed to be married and have a big family since I was a kid. I planned for it and did everything I could to deny the feelings I had It irritates me to no end to see so many people disrespecting what I so long for.
SSM is not the danger to marriage so many make it out to be.

I also never understood the fury over gays getting married. Marriage in the US is secular in nature, not religious. People can be “married” in their church and the government won’t give a hoot unless they get a license as well; it’s up to the states to decide what constitutes marriage.

As for what other people do, I don‘t much care if it doesn’t affect me or mine. Gays want to get married and stay committed to their partner for their entire lives? Fine; nothing wrong with a healthy, consensual, monogamous relationship; it builds economic security, helps mental well-being, and cuts down on the risk of disease transmission. I might not find it in the Bible, but then again the Bible was built on polygamy, not monogamy, so marriage was obviously a fluid concept over the course of its history.

But I scratch my head when people say “Gay marriage is against my religion, so no gays should be married!” It’s like saying “I’m on a diet, so no one else should be eating donuts either!” Live and let live.

@B_rad Homosexuals harm the institution of marriage by perverting its natural, historical and only purpose and definition, irregardless of what heterosexuals have done within marriage. Marriage is a lifelong covenant and exclusive union between one man and one woman. Granted, marriages today are failing mostly because heterosexuals are en-mass breaking the rules and laws intended for the purpose of marriage. However, most couples that get divorced, are those same individuals who lived a sexually immoral lifestyle before getting married, and those couples who save themselves for marriage, and follow very traditional lifestyles before marriage, have a much higher rate of staying together. I, for the most part, count homesexuality in the same boat with adultery, fornication, incest, beastiality, lewdness, and polygamy. They’re all breaking the natural laws of order established by our Creator. I was born with a quick temper, but as I grew up I learned patience, humility, peace and to get along with people. I’m a man, and I have always desired to have a relationship with every pretty woman I see, but I have learned to not have sex with every woman, to respect women, to save myself for marriage and to treat women with dignity. Just because I was born wanting to have sex with every beautiful women I see, doesn’t mean I have to. There are rules, laws and customs to follow, for very reasonable and necessary reasons. One can‘t let blind love guide one’s actions.

Colt, I have no wish to redefine the term marriage in regards to the religious meaning. Further, since it is a sticking point, I’d be thrilled to refer to them as Civil Unions, or love mergers, or whatever, so long as equal rights and privileges are afforded to all. There are larger definitions of marriage than the strictly religious ones, and that is what I’m saying we must not prevent everyone from enjoying. Marriage, as far as the church is concerned, is up to the respective churches, but the secular legal contract that is marriage must be available to any couple who wishes to knowingly enter into it.

Insofar as the harm done to the institution of marriage, any two people who love one another and enter into a commitment to care for each other for the rest of their days on this Earth do absolutely no harm to the concept or the institution. It bears no effect upon your marriage, and does nothing to discourage the practice, it promotes it.

Colt, I completely understand your stance that you refrain from engaging in sex with every attractive woman you see in favor of the one woman you’ve committed to, and I applaud you. I feel the same way, but I want you to try to understand things from my perspective. Imagine you had no attraction for any woman. NONE. Would it be right to deceive a woman, marry her and never desire her? Would you choose celibacy? Or would you attempt to live as normal a life as possible with someone who shares your feelings?

Everyone needs to remember that we are not a theocracy, we are a constitutional republic with freedom and liberty given to us by God. The Law is not designed to prevent people from sinning, it is designed to protect the individual from infringement upon those God-given rights from other individuals and the govt. While I am certainly no religion basher, and I recognize that our govt is based on Judeo-Christian values, you must recognize that the law is not to impose values, religious or otherwise, upon the populace.

The govt has no business preventing anyone from entering into a legal contract with anyone else, with the exception of age restriction or mental state. While marriage certainly has its religious definition, it is also a secular legal contract that carries with it certain benefits and protections.

Just as the govt is to protect the rights of individuals to practice their own values, it MUST protect the right of other individuals and the organizations they belong to (IE.the church) to practice their values. We must not permit the inclusion of SSM to allow the progressives to force others to go against their beliefs, as in forcing churches to accept or perform SSM. While the progressive left is certainly trying to use gay marriage as a crow bar to infringe upon the rights of the church, the right is overstepping by trying to prevent two people from forming a legal contract.

It works both ways, people. Protect rights, don’t impose values.

I am NOT a Republican, I am a constitutional conservative independent who believes a free and just government has no place telling it’s citizens who can and cannot enter into a legal contract with one another. While I’m 100% for state’s rights, I cannot wrap my head around the argument that the government has some right to tell me that I can’t enter into a legal contract with another consenting adult. I’m a gay man who believes that small, limited, constitutional government is what made this country great, and will make it greater still, should we pull our collective head from our butt and get back to that. A small, limited government that cannot force values upon its citizens. Government is to protect the rights of the individual, not force values upon him.

So, there you go, a gay conservative who believes in gay unions (marriage, unions, whatever). If your definition of conservative means a large governmental apparatus that tells its people how to live, than you are just as big a progressive as Obama. The only difference is your values may be better for the country, but freedom means you don’t get to impose your values any more than Obama gets to impose his.

Remember what Jefferson said about imposing values. To paraphrase, if it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg, it’s none of my damn business.

@Nick, that is sorta where I was going… you either have two choices: 1. Get the gov’t out of it completely and treat everyone for tax and legal purposes as individuals, or 2. Allow consenting adults to be “happy” in whatever relationship they deem appropriate. Good luck writing the tax law to incorporate a 50 person relationship… and I am sure 10 business people would love to get together to exclude $2.5 million in capital gains for selling real estate… all conversations that wouldn‘t be necessary if we got the gov’t out of it.

As to the origin of homosexuality in individuals, I really don’t know. But I can tell you that I personally was attracted to members of the same sex at a very early age, long before I even understood what sexual attraction was. I had a completely normal childhood with no trauma, no gay influences, and no sexual abuse of any kind. Think what you wish, but most of us with those feelings have no say in the matter. While actions are always a choice, the feelings are certainly not. Trust me, I fought it for two decades (from adolescence) before I finally accepted that they weren’t going away. I would never have chosen this for myself, ever, but I must do the best I can with the hand I was dealt.

This is such a tough issue because what is right in someones eyes is wrong to someone else. From a Christian perspective, we need to love these people and show them how Jesus loves them. It does say in the bible that marriage is between a man and women. God created marriage in his image and the fact that people are making it into something that is between the same sex is just not right. Men and women are created differently but in marriage are meant to be one, having same sex marriage just doesn’t work. As soon as a country starts making decisions such as this , the society will more than likely take a down turn for the worst. It is just something that really needs to be prayed about.

Sooooo, the government should allow people to marrry animals too? Or how about pedophiles marrying their victims? Should the government stand in the way of those who want to marry multiple partners?

Wrong – the Federal government does not have the Constitutional power, but the states do. It is cowardly to do it without the voters, but then they could be like California and overturn the citizens’ will – which by the way is Unconstitutional – Federally and State.

@GUYFROMMAINE: What does this have to do with Zoophilia or pedophilia? This is about adults who want the freedom of marriage. Yes, I support same-sex marriage and polygamy. Why make it illegal? Everyone needs to be loved.

Why can I not bring up those things? Not too many years ago this country considered homosexuality wrong or a mental diease. Now, we are told to accept it, whether we want to or not. So why don’t we accept other forms of “sexual expression”, especially if “everyone needs to be loved?”

      Bravo, Mr. Oshawott.

Guy, two consenting adults engaging in consensual acts that come naturally to them are doing no harm to others. Neither a child nor an animal can consent to sexual acts. To equate the two is to equate consensual sex with rape. See homosexuality as a perversion or sickness all you like, but you can’t outlaw two consenting adults from behaving as they wish with one another. Since you cannot possibly prevent the behavior, preventing SS couples from enjoying the same rights as OS couples provides you nor society any benefit whatsoever.

BHelmet, while I am fully in support of the rights of states to determine acceptable standards for their communities, I still believe no free government has the right to limit which adults can enter into a legal contract together.

As to the polygamy argument that is often brought up to show the permission of SSM as a slippery slope, it makes perfect sense to limit the number of people who can be considered married. If not, could not an entire town decide to “marry” one another? So there must be a limit, logically it must be two.

It’s not about two gay gays getting married.

It’s about their forcing their will on us. For example, now they will try to close the Church down for discriminating against them for not marrying them ……It’s kind of like what they did with forcing the Catholic hospital to supply abortion pills to its employees. Now they will force churches to marry them or withdraw tax exemption status.

You have a point, HI. The progressives will use this as a bludgeon to try to force their will upon us. The problem is, you can’t limit the rights of individuals any more than they can. The law is supposed to protect the individual’s rights. That includes permitting any two consenting adults to enter into any legal contract they wish, and preventing progressive groups from forcing their views upon the church or any other organization. It works both ways. Protect rights, don’t impose values.

Apparently you don’t like freedom since you want to shove your version of equality down the throats of people and force others to give same sex couples benefits.

I’m glad Gov. O’Malley signed the bill into law. As a supporter of free love I believe anyone should be able to marry and have a family.

Your post shows that you don’t even know what “free love” is. Under “free love”, there is NO MARRIAGE because marriage limits the parties to the marriage from having intimate relations outside of the marriage. Marx called that limitation a form of “property” — thus a pure Marxist would abolish marriage.
