Masked Occupiers Attack NYC Cops With Bottles During Nighttime March

If you thought the Occupy movement was dead and buried, you may be disappointed. It seems the movement is recollecting for what may be another string of boisterous protests. On Saturday night, chaos erupted in Oakland, California, after Occupiers threw rocks and flares at police officers. In response, authorities used tear gas and, hours later, hundreds of protesters were arrested.

On Monday evening, the drama spread to New York City, among other localities, where 12 Occupy Wall Street demonstrators were arrested after they held a march in solidarity with their Oakland compatriots.

The march, which started at Washington Square Park and ended at Tompkins Square Park, took on some unusual elements. Masked protesters apparently took a prominent role at the event. Additionally, there was a divide that separated the majority of Occupiers from a small subset that seemed willing to engage in violence. Both in Oakland and New York, some Occupiers took to hurling items at police officers.

In New York, these instances were limited, but troubling nonetheless. The Village Voice reports on the spectacle’s change in tone:

In some ways, the action was a lot like many Occupy Wall Street marches that have come before — chanting, weaving through neighborhoods, occasionally sprinting to outflank the police, finally petering out.

But there were some new elements too: More of the protesters wore black and masked their faces, a protest tactic called Black Bloc that makes it harder for police to pick individuals out of the crowd. Snapple-bottles and soda cans were thrown at police. And a well-known video journalist was assaulted by a masked marcher.

Tim Pool, a journalist covering Occupy (a self-described sympathizer who does not necessarily identify with the movement), was attacked last night during the protest. His arm was “chopped” and his camera was knocked out of his hand. While he was not badly injured, this incident illustrates the intensified nature of the protest (see the attack around 17:00 — caution: language):

Gothamist reports reiterates that several protesters threw glass bottles and other items in the direction of NYPD officers last night:

On 9th Street between Avenues B and C, protesters gathered in front of the vacant P.S. 64 building, banging on the plywood around the structure. A masked protester standing next to us tossed a bottle that landed in the street and immediately ducked down into the dense crowd. “This guy! This guy threw it!” a man named Charlie screamed at the police. As officers made their way into the crowd, the masked man escaped and they detained Charlie instead. His companion was dumbstruck. “They just arrested my friend. He would never do any of that shit.”

On 14th Street between Third and Fourth Avenues, a man in the crowd tossed a bottle near a line of uniformed police officers, and was met quickly by several who wrestled him into handcuffs. Thrusting protesters away from the arrest, NYPD officers knocked over several people in the crowd and a heated confrontation erupted.

And these are only two of the examples presented. Below, watch the scene after police reach the man in the latter scenario. The video exposes a chaotic situation, with police reacting and protesters engaging in their familiar chanting (caution: strong language):

Here’s another video that showcases a shoving match between police and protesters after yet another man is detained:

Some protesters proposed that the bottle-throwers were undercover NYPD officers who had infiltrated the movement in an attempt to co-opt it. Others seemed dismayed that the violent tactics were used at all.

These events come as the Occupy movement appears to be getting its second wind. CNN recaps some of the other arrests and incidents that took place in various localities following the dramatic Oakland protests over the weekend:

In Tampa, Florida, several protesters were arrested for blocking traffic, CNN affiliate Bay News 9 reported.

In Philadelphia, police reported several hundred protesters blocked traffic near City Hall and attempted to cut down a fence near an area park where Occupy protesters were recently evicted from camping out. Two protesters were arrested, according to CNN affiliate WPVI.

Overseas, Occupy protests were held outside U.S. consulates in Melbourne and Toronto, while statements of solidarity were issued by Occupy groups in Olso, Norway, and in Vancouver, British Columbia, according to Twitter and website posts late Sunday.

This resurgence isn’t happening by chance, either. The Oakland events were the catalyst that spawned this international response, as the official Occupy Wall Street web site has been promoting the protesters’ planned reaction to the “extreme police violence” that happened over the weekend. Here’s more:

…actions are currently happening or planned in response to extreme police violence used against Occupy Oakland yesterday in New York City, Boston, Toronto, Vancouver, Melbourne, Oslo, Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Portland, Tampa, Indianapolis, New Haven, Orlando, Jackson, Des Moines, Hollywood, Baltimore, Portland ME, Tulsa, Denver, St. Louis, Eugene, Nashville, and Detroit. We have also received word that the Bank of Ideas in London is being raided!

Washington, D.C. may be the next location where police clash with protesters, as Occupiers have refused to comply with new rules that would require them to vacate their encampment.

Let’s get this straight…OWS is indeed dead. What you’re seeing is that element of militant marxists and anarchists that exist at any given time. OWS has not grown. It has not garnered public support. I dare say at this point after witnessing the flagburning and destruction they can forget about their “peaceful” assertions. History teaches us that when these “movements” reach a wall, when they won’t grow, they have to get more disruptive and violent to retain media attention. This is what we’re seeing right now. They’re seeking confrontations because they know the media is on their side. What we must do now is tie OWS around Obama and other democrats’ necks. Elizabeth Warren the MA senate hopeful who proudle stated she’s the “inspiration” for OWS sticks out immediately. The left has proven itself to be exactly what we predicted it to be. Dangerous, festering and willing to destroy the country. Now..hang OWS around Obama’s neck.

America has been asleep while George HW, Clinton, George W, and now Obama (the progressive movement) have had the plan in place (Earth Summit Rio 1992) , for America to no longer be a nation by 2012. The 20 year mark and new convention scheduled for the first week in June. Obama has had more incentive via Soros to act swiftly to make it happen. Do your home work, they hide nothing! But Americans find the easier road to sleep through it all and keep their heads buried in the sand. Oh ya remember its a conspiracy theory to most…the reality is oh so close to being shown.

Americans chose to live in the convenient world made by the big corporations all based in China.
Its all about worldly possessions and carnal desire. The last thing most Americans need is God to remind them of anything good and our real purpose for living on this earth. The tower of Babel lives here.

I dare say there is only a small minority of people who would take a stand against this.

TEXASFIREGUY…we’ve seen the superpacs launch blistering campaigns against their fellow GOP hopefuls. It’s time to get the word to these guys that the gloves are off at this point, there’s too much at stake. Once a nominee is chosen these superpacs should begin smearing and conjoinging Obama and his democrat lackeys to their words and actions. Every swing state should see an ad of Obama embracing Corzine and telling the nation that Corzine advises his administration while Corzine cannot explain where $1.2 billion dollars of his company‘s investors’ money has gone. Show Obama teaching Alinsky to his ACORN pals (there are pictures out there) then show OWS’s antics right along side it. Show Nancy Pelosi saying “God Bless Them” while we see footage of OWS burning flags and destroying buildings. What we shouldn‘t do is have a confrontation with OWS because that’s what OWS wants. I promise you Axelrod and Plouffe are planning the dirtiest campaign we’ve ever seen. It’s time to let the groups with the most money and influence working with the GOP that the gloves must come off. The Tea Parties on the other hand should keep OWS at arm’s length. Like Napoleon said..”never interrupt your enemy while he’s making a mistake”.

Look People, Although a certain number of OWSs have a Entitlement and Socialist view, there are OWSs that are capitalists and extremely educated.

We should be attending these OWS events educating these kids to where they need to focus their attentions; to the Federal Reserve PRIVATE banks, the United Nations, the White House and Congress.

You people have to wake up to the whack-a-mole-game that the elite are distracting you with to buty more time.

OWS will be seeking to disrupt GOP and Tea Party events this year. They are salivating for a confrontation to exploit infront of the media. This is why people like Bill Ayers and OWS leaders like Wade Rathke and Steven Lerner have been pleading with their followers to bring the Tea Parties into OWS. It would work twofold…to legitimize OWS and to create the environment for a confrontation..at which point the media will play it’s role in the lefty machine and exploit the incident to paint conservatives and the tea parties in as bad a light as they can manage. This is the left’s stock in trade. OWS has no where to go but get more disruptive and violent. The public didn’t embrace them, they’re not growing. What you’re seeing now is the pocket of anarchists and marxists that exist at any given time. Be vigilant and be smart, don’t give OWS the propaganda piece it wants…avoid a confrontation with them. Keep them at arm’s length. The left will destroy itself as we’re seeing with OWS. And make sure OWS is tied around Obama and the democrats’ necks. “God bless them” said Nancy Pelosi. Elizabeth Warren claimed to be the “philosophical inspiration” of OWS, Obama has embraced OWS…now make them pay for it.

GONZO….I won‘t pray for Obama’s safety but I will offer that if Obama is made a martyr we will never be rid of him. And yes I know how harsh that sounds. He must be shamed and defeated out of office in a fair election. I‘m sorry but it’s difficult for me to extend too much “good will” towards Obama when I can see the b@stard intentionally playing American against American like a good Alinskyite. When I can see him playing games with people while they are unemployed and losing their homes. When the country faces a debt crisis of incredible severity while he uses the tax payer as his piggy bank to fund unions and “green” delusions..and keeps demanding more. When I can see all that matters to him is his political aspirations rather than the well being of the country. When I see him trample over the constitution like a doormat. When I see him lie to the nation’s face about his “3 million jobs saved and created”, jobs that cannot be demonstrated in any credible way….no I’m sorry, I can’t bring myself to pray for his safety. He’s quite safe enough without my asking for it. But I will state that making a martyr of him would be the worst thing that could possibly happen, he and his influence would never leave us at that point. His color will be used by liberals to manipulate the population into voting for liberals, the left is shameless like that. He must be removed from office the only way that’s right and proper..through a fair election.

The OWS web site refers to “extreme police violence used against Occupy Oakland”.

We have yet to see extreme violence by either the police or the protesters yet but it is coming. Someone is going to be killed soon at one of these protests.

Regardless of who dies first, a police officer or a protester, the police will be blamed and then we will see that “extreme” violence the OWS seems to want so badly.

They are ramping up for the spring offensive, much like the Taliban. You are sadly spot on about the violence-how soon before a t-shirt an banner will be out with the martyr du jour that bravely fought the man and died blah blah blah, fill in mao like speak. Obamma owns this, Pelosi and Reed too.

      Soupsandwich,
Instead of t-shirts with Che’s picture, they should wear t-shirts honoring “Nancy”, “Harry”, or “Curly O”…

The police should just arrest ANYONE wearing a mask. Your intent is to hide your identity, cowards, and by wearing a mask, people should know you are up to no good. It’s too bad Oakland/San Francisco doesn’t have freezing weather, or we wouldn’t be hearing about these jerks.

I say, break out the tasers. I don‘t understand why they haven’t already. You tase a couple and the word gets around…case closed, these idiots would flee. Besides, the funny factor would be great on Utube.

Snapple-bottles and soda cans were thrown at police.

    Snapplle Bottles?
    Freaks….
Hey Obama and Holder, I think it’s about time we ban Snapple, or at least a national register of purchases and a 90 waiting period should be imposed.

God no! The tried and true methods for a Communist take over of a Country always includes riots and civil unrest. Then “Marshall Law” for “The Country’s own good”.

We need to stand firm, stand tall and stand together as American’s. We’re all ticked at the idiots in the OWS circus. Just be careful not to fall for their bait.

Hunker down, dig in deep, bite down hard and cowboy up, when the time is right. “Patient Endurance” is what the Bible calls for. God Bless

Amen Zelda, well said and 100% correct in my opinion. As temepting and satisfying it would be to watch the cops wade into that crowd with clubs swinging, it just plays right into the Anarchists playbook. Did you notice in the article it talks about the guy who threw the bottle, then ducked down and ran away, causing the police to push into the crowd, knocking ‘innocent’ protesters over and arrest the wrong guy? All to spread anger, resentment and to cause chaos.

San Francisco and California as a whole is a disaster thanks to liberals. I live in Southern California and it is horrible. As soon as I retire I am leaving California behind…. but I am afraid there will no where left to go.

Yeah, makes me sad and angry being a native SoCal resident. This isn’t the Cailornia I grew up up in – although it was certainly on it’s way then. I’m looking at rural areas in states east of here, if I can afford to. I backpack, so waaay off the grid is do-able in an emergency.
