Mass. College Considers Banning Perfume, Cologne on Campus

Earlier this month we told you about a Nevada bill that would ban air fresheners and fragrances in public places. Well, it seems Nevada isn‘t the only state that’s flipping out over fragrance. Now, a college in Massachusetts — Framingham State University — is mulling a ban on perfume and cologne (and fragrances in general) on campus:
From WFXT:
Human resources director Rita Colucci tells Fox25 she considered the ban after hearing complaints from several faculty members. They told her that chemicals found in fragrances, cleaners and disinfectants can cause health problems, particularly with people who have asthma.
Colucci admits enforcing such a ban would be tough. A meeting will be held on campus next Wednesday to further the discussion.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 9:07amCan we conservatives please be civil??? Chemical sensitivity is a very real problem for a growing number of people of EVERY political persuasion. The aldehydes in the cheaper frangrances present a detoxification challenge for many people, just as does second-hand tobacco smoke. The issue here is what can be done about it. Typically, the left wants more regulations on every level. A less onerous solution would be for those affected by fumes to explain and ask others to be considerate. Neither solution is perfect for everyone, but some of these jerk-comments just build up the image of conservatives as being hateful – frankly, because the comments ARE hateful.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 11:40amSome of these hateful people should look up “Environmental Health Center, Dallas” and read about people who actually have problems with many things that are common to the rest of us. That doesn’t mean we have to outlaw products, just be sensitive to others for a change.

Another example of their lefty politics, they even had an Iranian professor there (i had to take the class for my major), who would RAIL against the U.S. and how bad we are. My answer is go back if its so bad.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 11:12amYour comment goes to show you know nothing! Some people are affected by gross, loud smells. I learned this as a child at a candy factory. The smell of the sugar made me feel sick. Didn’t bother others, but it did me. When I pass someone at the store wearing loud perfume it’s like my mind goes blank and knees get weak. When I go someplace with stick-ups or plug-in‘s I can’t stay there. The chemical smell does something to me. To my knowledge, I’m not allergic to most things, but these chemical smells do a number on me. Old women with a strong smell of baby powder and body odor do a number on me. Deodorant smells never bothered me, but I became alarmed years ago about the ingredients and started using soda, then found the deodorant stones which are safe and really do the job without the stickiness.
Report Post »Some of you folks don’t realize how you smell overloading with perfumes. Don’t know why it affects me, but it does. If I wear perfume at all, it’s the pleasant smell of “Happy” by Clinique. I won’t go into homes with stick-ups, nor will I ride in a car with someone who bathed in smells. Some people are affected by these chemicals so much, they become very ill and are sick for a few days like having the flu. Be a little kinder to these people, they are the canary in the mine, while most of you are wearing the chemicals seeping into the skin and affecting your body.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 12:57pmYes, loud is a sound, it’s also used with obnoxious odors, meaning it’s too smelly to deal with. Believe me, I wouldn’t get within 100 yards of a insensitive person like you. So, move over and give room to the ones who can’t take your LOUD smells. Meaning less is enough when it comes to perfumes. I bet you insult everyone who doesn’t agree completely with you. You’re atypical nasty person.

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 1:24pmBuck Up BlueBonnet! Perhaps you should seek professional council for your mind going blank and knees going weak whilst smelling certain scents. I can‘t stand the smell of your favorite ’Happy’ by Clinique but I defend your right to wear it!
Report Post »Bluebonnet
Posted on March 31, 2011 at 1:43pmGood example. Not all perfumes smell good on different people. My dentist asked what I wore because it was delightful compared to so many smells he had to endure. He wanted to buy “Happy” for his wife. Example: some can’t stand the smell of fish cooking, some like it, etc. etc. just about anything you can name, some like it, some don’t. Not all perfumes smell good on all people and this is why it’s obnoxious, perhaps.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 12:20amIf Progressives were really trying to create a European-style nanny state we could almost live with it; but what they’re really after is to create a Macro-Singapore, where every detail of every resident’s life is centrally managed…where they live, what work they do, where they and their children are educated and what education they receive; how many children people may have…what they may eat and what they may not eat; and on and on…
Lee Kwon Yu created this form of government 40-odd years ago and he branded it “Asian Democracy.’ Today, his children and suporters of the Lee ‘dynasty’ continue the legacy with endless regulations and constant monitoring of everyone except themselves.
And it does not matter whether a Progressive holds legal authority or merely administration power in some petty institution — the urge, almost a genetically driven urge, is to micro-manage everything.
These people and their ideology are bad ju-ju for America.

Report Post »PERFUMES AND FRAGRANCES ARE A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD
SYNTHETIC PERFUME CHEMICALS CAUSE CANCER
WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT FRAGRANCE… THE PUBLIC HAS BEEN MISLED INTO THINKING THAT PERFUMES, SCENTED AND EVERYDAY PRODUCTS ARE PERFECTLY SAFE, BUT THAT IS NOT SO.
Fragrances contain many carcinogens, chemicals and solvents. Synthetic chemicals, in scents are derived largely from coal tar or petroleum. In the past 50 years or so, 85-90% of fragrances, according to U.S.FDA have been synthesized not only from petroleum, but from known harmful chemicals such as toluene, phenol, benzyl acetate and limonene. A great part of the chemical additives in perfumes are known to be TOXIC, and over 4000 chemicals are used by the fragrance industry.
Perfume wearing-people, the people that wear so much you can smell them from 10 feet away and leave a wake of fragrance behind them, think they smell wonderful; the reality is they create a toxic environment filled with poisonous, cancer-promoting chemicals that cause the rest of us to gasp for breath.
Perfume-wearing people also remain oblivious to the fact that PERFUMES CONTAIN CANCER-CAUSING CHEMICALS THAT ARE ABSORBED RIGHT THROUGH THE SKIN. These chemicals enter the blood where they poison the liver and other organs, causing cancer and cellular toxicity throughout the body. They can’t even smell their own perfume, so they slop on every-increasing amounts, completely oblivious to the fact that they are creating a toxic cloud of fumes emanating from their bodies in all directions.
Health effects from fragrance are: respiratory-difficulty breathing; neurological-difficulty concentrating; headaches-migraines; and loss of voice-hoarseness.
Barely a decade ago, people SMOKED everywhere even in restaurants. Today that would be considered ludicrous. And why? Because smoke contains hazardous chemicals and pollutes the air for everyone. Precisely the same argument applies to perfumes and colognes.
Being forced to breathe in other peoples’ fragrance choices, contaminating your air, is like being forced to breathe in secondhand smoke! It is a loss of control over your personal environment. DO NOT ALLOW THIS!!
