Mass. School District to Close Tuesday for Islamic Religious Holiday

The Cambridge Public School District in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the first in the state to close in observance of an Islamic holy day. Today, students and teachers will have the day off, as a district committee voted last year to close for one Muslim holiday each year.

The holiday – Eid al-Adha — is also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice” (last week, the Blaze covered a Florida legislature’s attempts to block animal slaughters associated with this observance). It is one of the two “high holy days” that are observed by Muslims.

Schools will not be closed for the second holiday, Eid-ul-Fatr (celebrating the end of Ramadan), as this holy day occurs in August (at the end of the summer). If both holidays do end up falling during an academic year, the district will only close for one of them. WCVB has more:

“We’re ecstatic about this,” says Atif Harden, the interim executive director of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. “This is the first year that it’s going to occur. This sort of recognition of our existence and the population we have, we feel very good about.”

The decision to close the district down in observance of the Islamic holiday came after Muslims students approached staffers, administrators and students at a school in the district in an attempt to launch a discussion about their faith. After meetings were held and leaders considered the fact that there is a large Muslim population in the district, the decision was solidified.

Officials claims that the size of the Muslim population as well as a general push for inclusiveness are the reasons behind the policy change. Currently, the district closes for some Jewish and Christian holidays, thus closing for an Islamic holiday is being defended as a common-sense ideal.

    What do you expect from Cambridge? BTW, are you allowed to have a creche in a public place in Cambridge? I didn’t think so. Thank God I got out of Boston.

      The biggest irony of this is that Cambridge bans research on most mammals because they claim animal research is inhumane. It’s okay to slaughter animals for an Islamic ritual, but for medical research? Not in this city.

      I don’t see a problem with this, if Jewish children are excused to leave early on Fridays, kids get off for Christmas and Easter, both are Christian Holidays. Usually kids are off for I think Yum Kipper (sorry, don’t know how to spell that properly…) So why not an Islamic holiday…

      Funny thing is… I’ve never heard a teacher, Principle, Union, ACLU or Atheist EVER complain about people being off for Religious Holidays which is in and of itself an admission or recognition of Religion, yet they won’t recognize or allow a Creche or other religious display… oh the irony!!!

      Next time your Principle or School Super says that your kids can‘t do a Christmas art project or can’t have a Christmas tree or can’t have a Christmas display, then push back… tell them, “Fine, if my kids can’t celebrate Christmas, then you don’t get to either, so I expect you and every teacher to put in a full days work on Christmas since you aren’t allow it to be observed, then you don’t deserve the benefit of the day off !!! ”

      See how quick they put up a Christmas tree and start singing Christmas Carols !!!!

      So you really don’t understand the difference between the “recognition” of a religion and the practice of it? When you are give a day off, it’s to allow people to celebrate or not to celebrate in any way they chose. When you put up a Creche, it’s practicing that religion in a very specific way. Religious holidays from school are just a pragmatic concern–too many students would take those days off anyway to make instruction on those days useful. Jews in American public schools do not go to school on Christmas, but that does not mean they believe in the virgin birth. See the difference?

      So much for irony….

      There are 5 Jewish holydays, 3 Christian holydays, 1 day for the muslims.

      I agree…..home school for now. The only way we’re gonna win this one is to get rid of the dept of education and get it back to the local level.       Americans are so utterly self-absorbed, they invite a killer into their schools, a breath away from their young, and congratulate themselves for being freedom-loving, tolerant, and understanding.

      Go read up on Besaln and see first hand what Islamic rituals and sacrifices did to this school.

      If you idiots do not wake up soon, your schools will look like Beslan and your children will be just a cold and just as dead…lambs sacrificed on the altar of Allah.

      I think there are to many holidays created to coddle certain groups. Why adults target childrens schools to inflict a new holiday is beyond me. Why don’t they worry about the quality of education instead of a day off for their own personal agenda?

      Reddenback – at 55 I’ve never known a year without Christmas. But for all intents and purposes, there is no “Christ”mas holiday especially considering that everyone gets the day off regardless of their religious affiliation AND the fact that it’s all about buying and selling things – hardly the way that Christ would want His birthday celebrated (which of course it is not). In short, “Santa” outranks “Christ” each December 25th and every day after Halloween leading up to it. Frankly, I really don’t care. I worship God and His Son every day of the year not just on Sundays and one “special” day in December. This year Christmas falls on a Sunday, yet most churches will be empty because members will be at home tearing wrappings off of their gifts.

      Here we have a specific Muslim holiday being set aside in the midst of doing away with Jewish/Christian symbols, holidays, words, prayer, etc. so let’s not get too hypocritical here – if they want the “separation of church and state” to be taken seriously, then this flies in the face of what they are pretending to do. My bigger concern is when sharia law becomes a part of our legislative and judicial processes – and that’s not too far away, don’t you think?

      On the other hand, what I DO find offensive is the use of the word “*********” (or derivatives) when referring to the Tea Party Movement. Grow up.

      In answer to your question
      Because the government insists on and compels their idea of division between church and state (unless of course, it doesn’t suit their purpose) :

      I’m not okay with federally funded public schools closing for any religious holiday. If we can‘t reference Christmas or Hanukkah then we can’t reference an Islamic holy day.

      If students want out of school for religious holidays, they can use up their allotted excused absence days. If they run out of those, I guess they’ll have to rack up some unexcused days and deal with the consequences.

      And I’m not okay with public schools making special in-school accommodations for religious purposes. Excusing Islamic students from class and providing them with a special room where they can pray several times a day comes to mind.

      Like the rest have said here…It’s not the fact of having another holiday added, it’s the chosen holiday…Teaching a child about sacrifice is a good thing, but explain this holiday to my six year old, who happens to have a llama, a goat, two sheep, and some rabbits..Tell her all about this Muslim religion please..The treatment of women (which she will be someday), the slaughter of her animals that she loves, and how to strap a bomb to her chest and blow herself up.I‘m pretty sure I know my daughter well enough that she won’t be listening for very long…Hows that for honest?

      I see your point. The point I and others are trying to make is “most schools have banned other religious holidays, so why allow this one”? Of course, I don’t know if this particular school allows the celebration of Christmas or Hanukkah, but where do we stop? A day off for every religion? Religion should be taught at home, especially when the very basic tenets of your religion (Islam) calls for the violent takeover of the entire world, and death to all “Infidels” who won’t convert to their religion.
