Massachusetts Outlaws School Bake Sales

In an effort to better control the nutritional intake of their constituent’s children, Massachusetts lawmakers have approved a ban on school bake sales.

“At a minimum, the nosh clampdown targets so-called ‘competitive’ foods — those sold or served during the school day in hallways, cafeterias, stores and vending machines outside the regular lunch program, including bake sales, holiday parties and treats dished out to reward academic achievement,” Laurel J. Sweet and Chris Cassidy write for the Boston Herald.

“But state officials are pushing schools to expand the ban 24/7 to include evening, weekend and community events such as banquets, door-to-door candy sales and football games.”

So if your kid goes to school in Massachusetts and they need to raise a quick buck, unless they can figure out a way to market wholesome awesomeness like apples and bananas, they can pretty much rule out selling foodstuffs.

Watch the New England Cable News update (via the Herald).

Unsurprisingly, some people are unhappy with the state’s new regulations.

“If you want to make a quick $250, you hold a bake sale,” Sandy Malec, vice president of the Horace Mann Elementary School PTO in Newtonville, told the Boston Herald.

“The goal is to raise money,” said Maura Dawley of Scituate, MA. “You’re going to be able to sell pizza. You’re not going to get that selling apples and bananas. It’s silly.”

Another resident and School Committeeman weighed in:

My concern is we’re regulating what people can eat, and I have a problem with that. I respect the state for what they’re trying to do, but I think they’ve gone off the deep end. I don’t want someone telling me how to do my job as a parent. … Is the commonwealth of Massachusetts saying our parents are bad parents?

Proponents of the measure disagree.

“We’re not trying to get into anyone’s lunch box,” Dr. Lauren Smith, Massachusetts Departments of Public Health and Education medical director, told the Herald.

“We know that schools need those clubs and resources. We want them to be sure and have them, but to do them a different way. We have some incredibly innovative, talented folks in schools who are already doing some impressive things, who serve as incontrovertible evidence that, yes, you can do this, and be successful at it,” she added.

Sen. Susan Fargo (D-MA), claims the bake sale ban is necessary because the child obesity crisis has reached “crisis” proportions, according to the Herald.

“If we didn’t have so many kids that were obese, we could have let things go,” Fargo said. “But this is a major public health problem and these kids deserve a chance at a good, long healthy life.”

Perhaps my favorite political quote of all time…

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Just try selling apples in front of a Target or Walmart to random people…… what a DS ******* this guy is….. blame everyone, but the parents. Liberal = No personal responsibility

You have to wonder about the “morality” of these busy bodies.. In early 2009, corporations like Monsanto, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Sodexo and Tyson Foods wrote and sponsored “food safety” bills which, according to critics; hand control and policing of food to factory farms and corporations. They point out that bills impose industrial, anti-farming “standards” to independent farms. Also, that they subject those who do not use chemicals and fertilizers to severe penalties, which apply even to producers growing food for their own consumption. The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009: HR 875 [29] was introduced by Rosa DeLauro, whose husband (Stanley Greenburg) works for Monsanto. According to critics, the bill includes criminalization of seed banking, prison terms and confiscatory fines for farmers; 24 hour GPS tracking of their animals and warrentless government entry. For those who have passed it up, it explains how the Constitution was designed to protect the 49% from the will of the 51%.
99% of the people can NOT, Under ANY condition, take away the Constitutional Rights of the 1%.

You have the Right to do ANYTHING you want, provided that you don‘t violate another person’s Constitutional Rights !!!!

      It is that simple !!!!

Eating Baked goods laced with Fat and Sugar is my Right, unless it violates your rights !!!!!!

What is America coming to? I am sick and tired of our know-it-all “leaders” from the top down dictating what we can and can’t do, what we can and can’t say, what we can and can’t purchase for our homes, what we can and can’t drive on the road, what we can and can’t eat…

Is this thanks to Michelle Obama and her “nutrition” quest? Once government controls health care, they’ll try to control every aspect related to “health care”… This is just the beginning.

Perhaps some of these Moms should just get together and IGNORE this outrageous rule!

PROBIEMSOIVER, your words are spot on. The original idea was that you have a right to live however you want provided you don’t trample the rights of anyone else.

The real crux of the current evil tactics here are that you can twist that idea by saying that rights to affordable health care and equal housing and iPads are God-given rights because it’s “fair.” So NOW we have people telling us that eating that donut means you will more likely have a heart attack and raise MY health care costs, so you are violating my rights unless you eat carrots.

It’s a shameful ploy, but they’re selling it under the guise of fairness and equality. And the sheeple are buying it. God help us all.

Worst part is, if I could just brainwash everyone into understanding their mistake and seeing things my way, I’d be just as guilty as Hitler. Guess we’ll just have to educate and inspire and live as examples.

Only when they are willing to ‘secede’ from the State, kick out the unions, quit giving or taking money from them and educating your own kids in your community.

Everyone EXPECTS the government to fix the problems. The people our Founders believed in have abdicated their own power…….just as they were afraid we would.

Reading the ‘5000 Year Leap’ opened my eyes as to why the Founders had a great vision, even if rough around the edges, and we fixed.

I get so sick of people saying it’s “bad parenting” …it’s not bad parenting, it’s IGNORANT parenting from a bad education due to the Government (and only because they made it a law that all kids HAVE to go to school-yet that was supposed to be a RIGHT as well, yet then they made it mandatory) putting restrictions on what the schools can teach (and feed to the kids) …..if kids grow up eating chicken nuggets, french fries and hamburgers in school they are going to feed their own children that because that’s what they know….and that’s what their kids will get at school. AND, the government has made it impossible these days for most families to have a stay at home parent raising their children…so the kids are in government funded daycare (before primary school) getting fed the same crap from their beginning….

Don‘t sit there and spout bad parenting unless you’re willing to make an effort to educate and support your peers about the dangers behind all these foods..It only becomes a person’s “fault” if they are informed and choose to cont. making the wrong decisions!

We live off the land (raising our own food), homeschool our children and live very un-materialistically so our kids can grow up with the values we want them to have but that’s because those were the values taught to me by my stay-at-home Mom…. People have free agency, and need to make decisions for themselves, but if they are not informed how do you expect them to make decisions that ar
