Pakistani fisherman pulled out a giant, dead whale shark from the Arabian Sea today at a port near the city of Karachi after it had been seen floating for 10 days.

The Daily Mail reports that the shark measures 40 feet — the largest whale shark on record is 41 feet long — and it took two cranes to remove the eight-ton beast from the water.
Watch as the fisherman struggle to lift the shark:
International Business Times reports that the carcass was sold for about $18,750.
The whale shark is a filter feeder, meaning it feeds on plankton and other fish that could swim into its gaping mouth. For this reason, the Daily Mail points out, the massive fish isn’t usually a threat to humans.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 9:24amI love when they say stuff like “isn’t usually a threat to humans.” When the fish is bigger than the boat I’m sorry but no thank you.

Posted on February 8, 2012 at 12:39amI swam with one about 8 miles off the Florida east coast in 1990. We were fishing out of Stuart and spotted it basking on the surface. I slipped into the water with a mask and snorkel and was able to stay within about 10 feet of it for about 1/2 hour. Probably more like 5 minutes, but it seemed like a 1/2 hour !!
Report Post »Saw 2 other ones in the 12 years I lived down there, they both slipped away. Very gentle and very cool.
I swam with three Manatees and numerous Sea Turtles, but nothing was as cool as that dude, or dudette ( couldn’t tell :) )

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 8:39pmSo did they manage to kill it & try to make it look like an accident? It’s really too bad because these things are known to live for eons. I wonder if those jerks over there have been dumping toxins in their waterways? And now I’m wondering if the inspectors have ever thought to test the deep waters for bio-toxins or missing weapons? Maybe some other entity cruising the seas in that area did something to kill it & if so, it could have been our own military. The creatures of this world are the ones who really suffer for all our bulls–t. It was a beautiful fish & it would have been worth far more as a live tourist attraction than a dead weight.

Posted on February 7, 2012 at 7:59pmWow! I hope that whale shark at least had a peaceful passing. These guys are so gentle that divers can swim closely with them, even grabbing hold of their tail and going for a ride. I’d love to see one.
