Matthews and Guest on GOP Racism: They‘ve Been Saying ’Chicago’ a Lot — And ‘There’s a Lot of Black People’ There

For most people, the word “Chicago” evokes images of the Cubs, the Blues Brothers, and really, really thick pizza. But apparently, MSNBC hosts aren’t like most people. You see, for someone like Chris Matthews, the word “Chicago,” when used in relation to President Barack Obama, is — wait for it — a racist dog whistle.

“It‘s all part of this Barack Obama as ’other’ sort of blanket campaign that has been waged by the Republican Party for some time now,” said the Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson during a Wednesday broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews.”

“It may be gaining some traction now, though I wonder why now as opposed to a bit closer to election,” he added.

Matthews was more than happy to expand on this point because, apparently, the rhetorical thumping he received on Monday from former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich left no impression on him.

“What about now, is this constant barrage of assaults, saying the guy is basically playing an old game of demagoguery politics, where you take the money from the worker bees and give it to the poor people to buy votes,” Matthews said. “That‘s basically what they’re charging him with. Old big-style, big-city machine of 50 years ago.”

But here’s the fun part:

They keep saying Chicago by the way, have you noticed? They keep saying Chicago. That’s another thing that sends that message — “this guy’s helping the poor people in the bad neighborhoods, screwing us in the ‘burbs.”

Okay, we stand corrected. Here’s the fun part via New York Magazine’s John Heilemann: “There’s a lot of black people in Chicago.”

“Yeah, I think that may have something to do with it,” Matthews responded:

Actually, as NewsBuster’s Rusty Weiss notes, Heilemann’s “Captain Obvious” moment needs to be clarified a bit.

“According to the Census Bureau in 2010, the percentage of African-Americans in the city of Chicago was roughly 32.9%.  The percentage of whites? 45.0%,” writes Weiss.

So, referring to a city where the population of white people outweighs black people is, um, racist and stuff?

And do we even need to get into the well-known and meticulously documented fact that Chicago is infamous for it shady politics?

Maybe — just maybe — the GOP is referring to Chicago’s history of political graft and the influence it may have had on the president and not the fact that, you know, “there’s a lot of black people” living in the Windy City.

    I hear Chicago in politics and I think corruption. Most people do. I hear Democrat and I think stupid as most of the prominent politicians in the Democrat party are. I don’t have to list the names, you all know who they are. Think Pelosi, Reid, Wassermann and you get the idea.

    When I hear a crook in politics, I think black Democrat . Yeah, there are many white ones, but the majority of them are black Democrats. I’m not being racist, I just have to read the news. Waters, Rangel, Seabrook, Jackson and many more.

      Thrill Up your leg, Chris Matthews, yep, there are a lot of black people in Chicago, and as soon as one of them get’s shot by a white hispanic or white chinese or white person. You can bet that thrill up your leg that your co-host Rev. AL Sharpton and your Idol’s the Rev. Jackson and Farrakhan will be blaming all of Chicago’s problems on White-y and Racism. Nevermind the 500+ murders and 1000 plus black on black shootings in Chicago. Never mind that thrilla leg.

      You ask what is wrong with Chris Matthews? Well it is very simple, He is losing his mind! He is becoming insane. Can you imagine what will happen when his idol, his soul leader, his object of worship loses the election? Can you even imagine his total meltdown on camera? You might even see the men in the white coats enter the studio and cart him off th the looney bin, live and in real time. (That is if youu even watch MSNBC in the first place) For me and my family, we will watch the replay of it because we DON’T watch MSNBC at all, as a matter of fact it joins LOGO, CURRENT TV, MTV< OWN and a host of other channels not fit for my grandchildren to watch and are locked out of my satellite receiver. I sure wish they would pass the ALA CARTE law for satellite services so I can only pay for services I want and know that my money isn't being used to support chanels broadcasting communist propaganda or just plain filth.

      Chicago is brought up all the time because of its looooong history of corruption. Remember Jane Addams, she‘s hero to Progressives even though she was a Republican because she fought for women’s rights. Democrats never want to mention that she was a founding member of the Illinois Republican Party. She campaigned against Democratic alderman Johnny Powers around the year 1900… in Chicago. I’m writing this from memory so you may want to fact check some of this. I wrote a paper about her in college years ago.
      Johnny “De Pow” was terribly corrupt. Many died because of him. There was a deadly battle for power between two aldermen and Jane Addams tried to convince the people that De Pow was corrupt, but the Chicagoans were fooled into trusting De Pow and his thugs. He appeared at Chicago funerals and would drop a flower on the graves of people dying from disease and violence in order to maintain the people’s trust. That disingenuous act was enough for Chicagoans to believe he actually cared.
      He did nothing while garbage piled aside buildings attracting rats and insects. Many children were playing in the garbage filled streets and died of diseases. She eventually managed to get volunteers to clean the streets which saved a lot of lives, but she was never able to convince the people of Powers’ corruption and he kept his death grip on the Chicago people for years.

      @Votersoffny – I live in Illinois. I’m a white woman and I never think black when I think of Democrats. That’s probably because the city of Chicago has been run by crooked, corrupt, Democrat, white men. Why the black people of this state follow the Democrats is beyond me. For some reason they buy in to the same bull s#it every single election. And the elections in Chicago are a joke! Go to any polling place and you’ll see what goes on. We have a white Democrat ex-Governor who‘s in prison for trying to sell Obama’s senate seat. BTW, to the libs who think that Republican are racist, Obama ran against a man with blacker skin than him for that senate seat. The garbage that the Democrats put out in that election was unbelievable. I’m ashamed of this state because of the stupid voters. What they’ve voted for, they’ve deserved. Unfortunately for the rest of us we have to suffer for it.

      Thank you, The Blaze, for the headline hilarity. I saw this story on another site with the headline “Chris Matthews Says Word ”Chicago” Is Racist.” When I saw that, I just rolled my eyes. Yes, it is ludicrous and typical of Matthews, but it didn’t make me laugh. But then I see The Blaze’s version: “They‘ve Been Saying ’Chicago’ A Lot — And ‘There’s a Lot of Black People’ There.” Now that is hilarious! I know it’s a paraphrased quote, but it is accurately paraphrased, and WOW! I’m still laughing.

      Does Chris Matthews have any idea at all what an absolute fool he is? Does anyone ever rein him in at all? I know MSNBC is ridiculous, but this kind of stuff is over the top even for them.

      Thanks again for the laugh. Best one I’ve had all day!

      I can’t verify this story, but I heard that Matthews, or as I like to call him, “the cookie jar head” was kicked out of a Macy’s store the other day. Reason was, he started to jump up and down and scream RACIST at the salesman for showing him some black sox. I heard he reacted that way to his shadow a few times also.The man has the IQ of a crouton..

      The Democratic party is the one that is clearly racist, framing EVERYthing in terms of race.

      Democrats are obviously not color blind. They’re not gender-neutral either, and their sexism is just as bad as their racism. They refuse to acknowledge any person having inherent and equal worth, constantly harping on skin color (and gender), emphasizing those characteristics and artificially inflating their significance.

      That IS racism and sexism.

      Democrat – The party of racial, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic GRIEVANCE, resolved through big government social justice.
      Republican – The party of equal individual rights, opportunities, and responsibilities for everyone under the law, solved by applying the Constitution to a limited government.

    Why is it that white democrats always run back to the issue of race. If you talk about Chicago thats now racist, If you talk about golf racist and philaderer, If you talk about record its because of race. These WHITE men seen to have a big issue with there being a smaller population of blacks in Chicago than whites.     The really amazing part of this is that Matthew’s and his ilk continue with this line of attack, despite it’s seeming failure to motivate anyone. Well, anyone besides the 5% of the fringe Libs, and MSM commentators, that continue the storyline. Does ANYBODY buy this continual charge of “racism” anymore?

    For all of these years, I believed that Chris Matthews was just, plain stupid, but aside from stupid, Chris seems to be insane, and a racist as well. In my opinion, this nutball has a problem with black people.

    Is Matthews going of the deep end or what? They are trying very hard to steer this away from the economy and the MSM is in lock step. Last I heard, this President isn’t doing anything good for the african-american community.

      It could be standard liberal white guilt, but I’m with you. There comes a point where you cross the line into an almost pathological obsession about race.

      Could Mr. Mathews be making up for some dark deed in his past? As time goes on it seems more and more likely to me.
