Matthews ‘Ashamed as an American’ Over Obama’s Handling of Egyptian Crisis

Could it be? Is there something here that both Chris Matthews and Glenn Beck might actually agree on?

In covering the unrest in Egypt all week, Glenn has repeated a number of times that the United States has not managed its relationship with Egypt in an honorable way, first throwing our support behind Mubarak — a dictator for nearly three decades — and now quickly abandoning that relationship as the Mubarak regime crumbles under public pressure.

During a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Matthews admitted that while he normally supports President Barack Obama, he feels “ashamed as an American” over how the federal government has handled the unfolding crisis in Egypt.

“We’re not handling [the situation] as Americans should handle a matter like this,” Matthews said. “And Barack Obama, as much as I support him in many ways, there is a transactional quality to the guy that is chilling.”

“You treat your friends a certain way, you’re loyal to them. And when they’re wrong you try to stick with them,” Matthews said. “What are we good at here? What have we done as leaders and as friends? Nothing except watch. That’s all we do now.”

Populist means by definition the sway to the popular opinion of the people of the time. It usually refers to someone with no allegiance to any real values or beliefs. That seems a lot like our current President. If you cannot buy them off, give them a tax break or a waiver. That is not the American way. We will get to voice our opinion next year. Vote in 2012, and as Mr_ED for Air America (TV Division) says “as many times as is needed” (He must be from Chicago too).

Count the gaffs! 57 states, Corpse-men 3x (instead of corpsmen) etc. Between him and Biden (stand up and take a bow) and his many gaffs, they think they have the right to condemn others about minor mistakes? Nit Pic is what they do. Trouble is, we‘re too smart to forget the idiot things they’ve said and for me I’ll never forget the amount of money Michelle is deliberate spending (on our dime) just to get what she wants in luxury. She can spend whatever she wants on beautiful clothing, but none of it looks that good on her, for a fact. Poor thing, I really feel sorry for her in spite of her good luck becoming a 1st lady. Still have ringing ears about her being ashamed of America.

Never thought I’d EVER agree with Matthews on ANYTHING, but he is right about this. But Matthews should start questioning Obama’s lack of action, in addition to complaining about it. He shouldn’t put that aside. I’m glad he also brought up the Islamists. I agreed with Matthews over Buchanan on our mission in the Middle East also. Maybe Matthews should have a private counsel with the president. It would be interesting to see what Matthews would have to say AFTER said meeting.

Is the world going to end now (that I’ve agreed with Matthews)? LOL

Thanks, Meredith, for posting this. I would have never seen this clip had you not had it here.

Matthews knows nothing about being an American.

More, for the liberals like him, their ‘shame’ is their own problem. I, being an American Citizen–my proudest boast might I brag somewhere–refuse to be dragged into their guilt trip and self-pity party.

I am a Citizen of the United States of America. Never, not for an instant, will I be ashamed of that. No matter where I go, no matter who I encounter, I will speak clear: I am a Citizen of the United States.

If I be killed for that, so be it. I am an American. Liberals and Islamists might take my life, but they will never ever take my Citizenship.

I am a Citizen of the United States of America.

End of story…~takes up my soapbox and goes to sit down~

Its getting to a point of where its the U.S. standing alone against the rest of the world. It would be a disappointment to keep living in a world run by liberals taking away our freedoms so we all live like they do in 2nd world countries where we have no rights; flogged, stoned, hands cut off, live in fear of regime, jailed for life with little or no food. I’m not so sure Matthews and Beck do agree. Beck talked about an enemy of my enemy is my friend is actually a lie that comes back to bite you in the butt and the frenemy will always turn on you. Beck was pretty much saying we should not have supported this dictator from the get go because he and his government do not promote freedom. Freedom does not support dictatorships and by doing so make ourselves dictators and smear the name of Liberty. All accurate and true.

Matthews is disappointed why? Because Obama won’t go in and make Mubarak do as we say? Or because Obama is promoting what the USA stands for in promoting freedom by telling Mubarak he needs to step down now? By Matthews saying “You treat your friends a certain way, you’re loyal to them. And when they’re wrong you try to stick with them,” Matthews said. “What are we good at here? What have we done as leaders and as friends? Nothing except watch. That’s all we do now.” By saying we do nothing but watch what exactly is Matthews suggest we do? Invade? Saying we should stick with our friends is he saying he wants to stand by Mubarak?

Fact is this is Egypt’s problem, not ours. We never should have supported the dictator and it is up to the people of Egypt to determine if they will be a free people or not. Someone else doing it for them will make them not appreciate it.

Mubarak has been a friend to the West because the USA has paid Egypt the thick end of two billion dollars a year. Period.

Luckily, most of that has gone to their military with the majority of their officer corps being trained by the US war colleges in America. This has provided a very strong bond between to two military forces as, in most cases, the Egyptian officers were billeted with US officers while they trained.

Most of the old communist bloc countries underwent the same rough transition and are now coming out of it well (or some better than others, anyway). Egypt is no different except that the Islamists are doing a bit of pushing and shoving from the sidelines, of course.

      The important points are:
      - the military is generally popular with the Egyptians and is showing no inclination to support Mubarak, so hopefully this will not turn into an all out bloody mess.
      - Mubarak is a friend of Mubarak and all else is expediency. The population doesn‘t want him and it’s their country.
      - If the west doesn’t insert itself into this stoush then the likelihood is that Egypt will still be an ally once this is over. If the west does get involved then there will be resentment across the board, the longevity of which will be proportional to the level of western involvment.
      - Most Egyptians do not want Sharia or the Jihadis there.

Your adminstration’s approach is the right one, I think. Stay back out of it and be ready to help if asked by the citizens of that country.

Why did he do NOTHING when the Iranian people took to the streets over THEIR fraudulent elections. Barry Hussein is FOR an Islamic Sharia law Caliphate. He probably sees himself as the Caliph. The Islamic World President !!

I swear this man is manic depressive. One minute he has a tingle up his leg for Obama and the next he is ready to throw him under a bus.

Hey Chris Tingle…I’m ashamed for our country in that we broadcast you all over the TV every night. Talk about a failure in advertising.

No doubt.I was under the impression that the Obama admin. was going to further diplomatic relations with foreign countries government. That was why France loved the guy.Turns out this president is like a buddy who says they have your back in a fight then they turn and run.I can understand Mr.Obama wants to back the people, but he is not backing the right ones, the ones he has in his own country where he must fight for our liberty.Better take care of affairs here in his own country, that is much more important.

I hope Matthews feels the same way about England, Israel and our other allies because Obama is dismantling our support system, one by one.

Awwwww! The aura around the halo of his hero has dimmed perceptibly, lowering the intensity of his tingles!

I would be glad to help him relocate to a country he could be proud of, but only if he agrees not to ever come back!
