Matthews: Chilean Miners Would Be Dead if They Followed Tea Party Philosophy

In one of the most outrageous mischaracterizations of the tea party movement’s limited government mantra, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka speculate that if the trapped Chilean miners had followed the tea party’s “every man for himself” philosophy, there would be no survivors:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Okay let’s talk about what the…message to a lot of the people was. The message coming out of the Tea Party people — and a lot of them are good people — is ‘every man for himself,’ basically. ‘No more taxes, no more government, no more everything. No more safety net. No more health care for everybody. Everybody just get out there, make your buck, save it, screw the government, move on.’ Right?
RICHARD TRUMKA: Yeah.
MATTHEWS: You know these people, if they were ‘every man for himself’ down in that mine they wouldn’t have gotten out.
TRUMKA: That’s exactly right.
MATTHEWS: They would have been killing each other after about two days. This is a story of how people can work together, the people who were down there for two months. The people who were above ground from all over the world, using state of the art equipment not to get rid of the need for manpower but to save manpower in this case.
TRUMKA: You know this is just another example of how radical the Republican Party is becoming, do away with the minimum wage. You just talked about that. Bad policy, it will wreck the economy. If you didn’t have government regulation, you wouldn’t have clean water, you wouldn’t have cars that were safe, you wouldn’t have electricity that you could afford, I mean, just a number of things where you need a good, efficient government and they just throw all that aside.
MATTHEWS: Well why do people buy the rhetoric?
TRUMKA: I don’t think they do buy it.

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 8:44pmNO… If the RESCUERS would have followed the Demoncrats, the miners would never have seen the light of day again. The Demoncrats would have shut down those companies that made the drilling materials and taxed them so hard they wouldn’t have anyone on the payroll to go assist in such situations.

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 8:40pmConservative/Tea Party philosophy is so simple that its astounding when I see these attempts to degrade the Tea Party. We believe in individualism, doing things for yourself, and working hard to be successful. It is not every man for himself, but every man for his own success, so that he can help others. We do not want to help people who are simply lazy, but help the ones who CANNOT help themselves. Emphasize the word “cannot” because it is so important. In the case of the miners, they could not help themselves. Government is useful within its bounds, and when it works with the community instead of against it, great things can occur.

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 8:38pmMissed by a mile Chris Mathews, a country mile. What the Tea Party represents (and I’ll keep this really simple so you can understand Chris.) is the “comming together of like minded individuals to insure the Nation in which the live remains free. If the Tea Partyers were “self centered” and “selfserving” then they could never “come together” in any common cause. This November you Chris Mathews, get to see with your own eyes the effect of the Tea Partys comming together. And then the leftist “takers” shall give way to the right wing “makers” (credit to John Stossle)..

Posted on October 14, 2010 at 8:56amThe president of Chile took control of this disaster from day one. He called on the best brains and mining experts from all over the world. He showed the utmost care for the lives of the 33 miners. He allowed experts from NASA to advise and treat the trapped miners and prepare them for the trip to the surface. The president of Chile is a man of integrity, a man of Christian values and a true humanitarian. He stayed in command of the situation, listening to every and all proposal and plan, then selecting the best options. He made it an international effort, an effort which ended in success.
A far cry from Obama. When the oil spill disaster happened in the Gulf, He refused immediate help from numerous countries which offered oil skimmer ships and technology. He derided the BP oil company, and derailed many attempts to mitigate the disaster. Obama refused to over ride the stupid U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to not allow the gulf states to build sand dikes along the marshes to keep the oil out of those sensitive areas. Hundreds of individuals offered new technologies to help in the cleanup operations but they were turned down by the POTUS and the EPA because they mignt have been more effective than the feeble government attempts. He truly showed his disdain for the plight of the fishing industry and the free market approach to solve the crisis. His theory was “GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE ALL YOUR PROBLEMS” yeah right.
Obama made a couple of photo op visits to the area but otherwise took a hands off approach. He caused thousands of jobs to be lost by instituting a moratorium on drilling in the gulf, on top of all the jobs lost by the fishing and tourist industries. Under Obama, thousands of people suffered needlessly.
I hope the voters along the gulf coast remember the absymal uncaring response by the Obama administration on the 2nd of November.
Of course, Chris Matthews and the rest of the MSNBC cast of bobbleheads couldn’t see that. What else can you expect from the moronic policies set by GE the parent company of NBC. GE is trying it’s best to profit from the radical agenda of Obama and his henchmen. Chris isn’t a reporter, he’s a puppet whose strings are being controlled by the Communists and Jeffrey Immelt the CEO of GE.

It was more then peaceful. No government was formed and no lord of the flys B.S. ever took place. Not even the tea party is right wing enough to advocate for the system they lived under. Voluntary cooperation works just fine it seems.
I am for total and complete anarchy. This has proven itself to work just fine in the past. Only, in anarchy there is no way to rise or grab power without the voluntary help of others, who will not help you if they them selfs have nothing to gain.
selfishness is the key to human survival. Not obedience.
And to say that without government we would have no drinking water or safe cars is reckless. Its as if these people have never even heard the word economics let alone picked up a book on the subject.

It is impossible to use reason in an argument with those who abandon reason to define there stance. what you need to do is find those, some on this site that live by reason, that is reality but are wrong. not due to an evasion of reality but wrong because of a lack of evidence or knowledge. they will be the only ones you can convince thus the only ones worth your time.

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 11:55pmAnarcho Capitalist – Your right, except for one thing. Anarchy only works well for small groups.
Once the group gets larger, sub-groups band together to acquire mutual power (although, there is usually a leader of that group that wants all the power). In order to keep that power they grow bigger. In order to ensure other sub-groups don’t gain the same power, they regulate and control. The next thing you know, you have a dictatorship.
That’s why the founders opted for a republic with a limited central government.
The problem, of course, is that government also tends (just like any other group) to want more power than it has. The form the government takes does not effect this basic truth.
Being populated by politicians and lawyers, the most natural way to acquire that power, is by a combination of: salesmanship, lies, trickery, legal manipulation and social/political manipulation.
Fortunately, that stuff doesn’t work forever; and, our republic has more safety valves than most forms of government – IE: we have more time and chances to fix things, more peacefully, then most other forms of government.
The marks do tend to catch on eventually. We’re at that stage now.
The people have caught on to the game being played by the elitists in power.
That’s why libertarian conservatives won in Republican primaries; and, why the Republicans are winning, in big numbers, in poll after poll, around the country.
The old media have been pawns in this game – wielded by those in power.
Expect some of them to eventually, if grudgingly, come back around, someday.
Until then, the new media (Fox, Drudge, Radio, The Blaze, …) are gaining even more market share than the old media is loosing.
Things are looking up, Mathews (and his ultra low ratings) not withstanding.

Posted on October 14, 2010 at 12:31amI believe he was talking to the dangers of some of the Tea Party’s talking points when put into practice.
Report Post »Tea Party backed candidates talked of shrinking government by doing away with government regulartory agencies such as OSHA and MSHA in particular (and in one state, there was even talk of abolishing their state equavilants too!!!) Lest we forget why they were established. Those agencies work to protect workers not businesses.
Here in WV, the failure of Massey to meet regulation just recently killed the miners of the Upper Big Branch mine. Thankfully, these miners were in a harder ore reserve with some stability. Also, without their “big government” injection of tax money, those miners would probably be stuck down there. Without that government regulation or even the tax records of employers/employees, those miners would probably be written off as the “cost of doing business”, just as the railroads and mine companies did before the advent of legal worker’s unions (just as in China currently…we only hear of the reported deaths there). True unregulated free market capitalism has a value for a human life, history has taught us that much!
Tea Partiers should be well aware of Mr. Locke’s writing of “…life, liberty, health, and indolency of body…” (it help inspire our Founding Fathers), yet unfettered capitalism does not. Yet that is what the Tea Party seems to be aiming towards. Who does that benefit besides the company and their profits?
Also, to the anarchists, history has also taught us that anarchy usually lead people quickly towards a ochlocracy (mob rule). Where in history has gone well?

As for the tea party “way”, well, i’m guessing that the miners would have been out last month if their “ideology” was adhered to. You see, the tea party are like USA military.they never leave a man behind! the same can’t be said of the Obama administration, or their social agenda. you see, Obama would have just considered them “dead already” and a “waste of time”…….which is exactly how they treat the american citizenry.

Posted on October 14, 2010 at 11:16amAnarcho Capitalist writes: “I am for total and complete anarchy. This has proven itself to work just fine in the past.”
No, anarchy never works. You have to give up a small fraction of liberty in order to have any liberty at all. That is the basic premise of Classical Liberalism.
You cannot be free if, when you leave your farm to feed the animals in the fields, looters rob and burn you down. You are a prisoner of your property in an anarchy, subject to the whim of the strongest individual or gang.
Governments of moral people are created so as to secure your basic liberties, by protecting us from the depradations of our fellow man. It is when government goes beyond these basic duties that we begin to have problems, however total absence of government would lead only to a different form of tyranny.

That could not be further from the truth. People helped each other during those crisis and will do so with God forbid and future ones.
