May Unemployment Rises to 9.1%

WASHINGTON (AP) — Employers hired only 54,000 new workers in May, the fewest in eight months, and the unemployment rate rose to 9.1 percent.
The Labor Department report offered startling evidence that the U.S. economy is slowing, hampered by high gas prices and natural disasters in Japan that have hurt U.S. manufacturers.
The pace of hiring has weakened dramatically from the previous three months, when the economy added an average of 220,000 new jobs. Private companies hired only 83,000 new workers in May – the fewest in nearly a year.
Stock futures plunged after the report was released.
Local governments cut 28,000 jobs last month, the most since November. Nearly 18,000 of those jobs were in education.
Cities and counties have cut jobs for 22 straight months and have shed 446,000 positions since September 2008.
More people entered the work force last in May. But most of the new entrants couldn’t find work. That pushed the unemployment rate up from 9.0 percent in April. The number of unemployed rose to 13.9 million.
And the government revised the previous months’ job totals to show 39,000 fewer jobs were created in March and April than first thought.
The weakness in hiring was widespread. Manufacturers cut 5,000 jobs, the first job loss in that sector in seven months. That included a drop of 3,400 jobs in the auto sector. Several Japanese car makers reined in production due to supply disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake.
Retailers cut 8,500 positions, after adding 64,000 in April. And leisure and hospitality which includes restaurants and hotels, cut 6,000 jobs. That came after they added an average of 43,000 in the previous three months.

But let‘s review this administration’s policies, bailouts, stimulus for how well they’ve worked…
Then, if you haven‘t yet read what silly ol’ me proposed at the time, do so and see if it would have been worse; I think not, but hey, I’m just a dumb hick that lives way out in the boonies. Of course, my way wouldn’t have had the banks now making record profits and paying out record bonuses… my plan was more targeted at making the taxpayers themselves more profitable… which is why it would never work; it didn’t pay off the Wall St., “K” St., Union, Congressional coalition.

My wife and I looked at what we were making, my military retirement, and the money coming in from bonuses and overtime. Then we looked at what was going out in State and Federal taxes. Then I heard the talk of “means” testing for Social Security taking into account 401k and retirement funds. Turns out that after all of the government deductions that I was actually working for around 1/2 of what I thought I was. Got tired of working 60 to 70 hours a day to support those who either worked very little or none at all, so I said enough and retired.

Posted on June 3, 2011 at 9:24amI would like to extend my thanks to the federal government for the state of our enconomy. Just so you know when the economy crash’s like it did in 08 the best thing for the federal government to do is, cut taxes, regulation, and spending. Beyond doing that they should leave the economy alone when crash’s. When the feds get involved by doing stimulus and other stuff like it. It hurts the economy, that’s why the great depression lasted so long, there was so much government intervention that wouldn’t let businesses correct. And the only reason we got out of the great depression was because of WW2. Not because of the new deal. To understand more about why the federal government needs to stay out of the economy when it crash’s, you need to understand the “Boom Bust Cycle” of business.

It doesn’t count those that just graduated from high school or college that should be joining the work force, nor does it count those that have given up. the other thing it fails to count are those people on part time jobs or temporary jobs. Report Post »When McDonalds hires 60,000 employees in one month (last month) is skews the numbers up for that month. HOWEVER, just like car sales and ‘cash for clunkers’, it steals sales/new-hires from the future.
Last month’s numbers were artificially high, which means the numbers will correct themselves in the following periods. Let‘s say McD’s normally hires 60,000 over 4 months, then I would expect our next 4 months to be LOW until McD’s is ready to hire again.
I’m not saying McDonalds hiring is the cause of these numbers. Just that mass-hiring events do all the hiring at once and decrease the need for hiring in the future.
Clearly, the anemic size of this month’s numbers, shows that there is more than just McD’s going on.
The economy is coming to a SCREECHING halt.
Gas/Energy prices are UP!
Grocery prices are UP!
Cotton prices are UP! = clothing prices are UP!
Americans have already cut their spending to the bone.
INFLATION HAS BEGUN, IN FACT.
Since we cannot do without gas for our cars or food on our tables, we are forced to spend less and less.
When we spend less, employers don’t need as many employees.
Govt CAN’T DO ANYTHING to CREATE private sector jobs.
Anything they TRY to do is temporary and artificial and takes from the future.
However, government CAN do things to HINDER jobs – things like taxing, regulating, etc.
So, the only thing government CAN DO to “ASSIST” in job creation, is to GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY of those who DO create

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 8:27amA true unemployment figure would include EVERYBODY unemployed, whether they’re actively looking or gave up out of frustration. Only a government agency can skew figures and expect them to be taken as accurate just because they say so.
9.1 unemloyment is bogus. People who closely track the jobs figures have been declaring for the last two years that true unemployment is between 16-18%, and some credible analysts are putting the figure as high as 22%.
Whatever the case, it can’t be denied the economy is still dropping. The stimulus money is running the last of its course right now, with some of it in certain sectors gone completely. As many forecast, the collapse occurring in 08/09 was stymied somewhat by the stimulus and, as they said it would, it is continuing its fall now that funds are all used up.
For the first time since Obama was elected, many of his supporters have stopped trying to flim flam the public into believing we’re on the rebound and are now revealing an edge of hysteria in their voices. However, they’re still using euphemisms like “double dip” recession, while many others are declaring outright that we’re headed for a severe depression.
Unemployment is edging upward again and the housing market is still on a downward spiral. The MSM want us to believe that the key to prosperity is getting consumer spending up, without realizing that it isn‘t possible for people to spend more if they don’t have more.

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 8:46amHave you noticed more patrol cars writing tickets in your area? I have.
Have you noticed that the cost of license fees and other taxes have increased these last two years? I have.
But it isn‘t as bad as it’s going to get yet. Bloated government bureaucracies on all levels are getting less revenue and are having to cut bloated programs in order to balance their budgets. Stimulus money helped them these last two years, but there wasn’t enough of it to carry on forever. It’s running out, as I’ve mentioned before, and city, county, and state authorities are screeching like maniacs for fear of having to downsize both assets and personnel.
Camden New Jersey and Newark had to cut their fire and police forces by about a third and both cities are among the highest crime areas in the country today. Other cities are enacting the same kinds of austerity programs. The greatest danger to the tax paying public, however, is that these same jurisdictions will go into hysterical mode by raising property taxes and increasing the increases they’ve already put into effect as a last gasp dying effort to save themselves from losing anymore power. As mentioned previously, they already have patrol cars roaming the streets writing tickets for additionl revenue.
In the end, their efforts will be too little, too late, but, in the process of it all, we’re going to be saddled with permanent increases in direct taxes and services that will hurt everyone seriously.
