‘Mayberry’ Town Plans ‘Bring it Beck!’ Rally to Attract 1791 Clothing Line Business

The Blaze has been following the story of a small North Carolina town vying to be the home of Glenn Beck’s new 1791 clothing line.

First, the mayor of Mount Airy, N.C. called in to Beck’s radio program earlier this month to make a personal appeal, then a citizen designed a “Bring it Beck!” T-shirt hoping to further tip the scales in the town’s favor.

Now, residents are planning a Labor Day weekend rally in the hope of drawing Beck’s business.

Mount Airy — the inspiration for the fictional town of “Mayberry” — has been hit hard as manufacturing jobs have gone overseas, with Mayor Deborah Cochran estimating the town has lost 10,000 jobs in the last 10 years.

When Beck spoke with Cochran earlier this month, he addressed a report that said some members of the city’s board of commissioners wanted nothing to do with the project due to his conservative politics. According to local Fox affiliate WGHP-TV, Cochran and the board of commissioners recently passed a resolution declaring Mount Airy “pro-business.”

The “Bring it Beck!” rally will take place Sept. 5, and organizers say they will send Beck a video of the event.

    one of the thing I love about Glen beck is that he is neither Dem or Repub.He is an individual thinker.A free thinker.He is all for flat tax.I love the idea of a flat tax.He says there are progressives on both sides.I can see that too.All looking for more power and more control.He will be like Henry Ford and pay his workers a decent wage and then they will have money to buy his things.He is brilliant.Too bad other business owners cant see that.they just want to squeeze thee employees wages.then who will buy their product or services.GOD BLESS GLEN BECK

      Just to give an update on a NC local. Cockran sent me a real nice invite to be there for a town meeting and for the event there on Sept 6th. And since my brother is a city council member in another town..he kind of helped. He made a very simple phone call to two of the council members and basically, ripped them a new one for being more than idiots. He sort of reminded them in a professional manner I am sure. I also understand he reminded them who they work for and then politely called……a lot of stuff. Send her an email and let you know you are supporting her in Mr Airey. A trully professional lady with her town…comes first.

    I wouldn’t locate there as lo9ng as a majority of those council members opposed still have their elected seats.

    Saying they are “probusiness” is a long way from being ProBusiness, and elected officials can throw a lot of expensive roadblocks in the way. Especially once the sucker, I mean victim, I mean gullible fool, I mean wonderful employer sinks money there that can’t be readily moved when the town council raises the Jolly Roger and goes for the throat.

      So because there are a few on the council that are ignorant of what GB stands for, you think GB should locate elsewhere. I fail to understand how some of you ppl think.
      A group is doing what they can to entice GB to consider there town for his business, and because the conditions are not exactly perfect for some of you, he should F them all as one of you put it and locate elsewhere. Well the same issue will be elsewhere also.
      I am so sick of the ignorance posted on this site, which of all places you would think would be otherwise.

      You are right on. If he desides to locate there, and it puts a lot of people to work, then minds will change.
      If they don’t, they will be voted out.
      In the ’80s a beach town near me had a building moritorium, the people voted the council out. The result was a lot of jobs.
      As to the ignorance and hate posted here, I’ve seen worse. There are cockroaches everywhere.

      @ HIS & FREE: Thanks for your posts. I just don’t get it. It is easy to pick out the left leaning loons that post here. The sad thing to me, and especially on this particular story is, it appears almost all of the posters would be considered being on the RIGHT. And yet look at what they post. One suggest they tear down the Andy and Opie statue. What kind of conservative thinking person comes up with that idea? And others agreed with him. No doubt HATE and IGNORANCE runs rampant on many other sites, but it just surprises me the amount that shows up here….

      @ Yepi: yes it would be you. You should be so proud. True conservative ideals. Tear down statues, burn books, etc. I understand your hatred of the hollywood left but to act like them, really. I’ll bet ya $20 that town has promoted itself as the Mayberry of the show and done well with that approach.
      And to answer your other question, I live close to this place and plan to visit on the 5th. Maybe I will see ya there and we can riot in the streets to protests these awful statues of ANDY and OPIE…

I never mentioned anything about burning books, but now that you have brought it up… I would start with the Quran (just to stoke up the grill), then follow that up with most “supposed” educational material that our children are being required to read. Then start from scratch and rewrite the rewrites of American history (good and bad) the way it actually happened. Then I would finish the burning off with the books that try to hyper sexualize our children at a much too early age, to include the books that teach that homosexuality is okay and normal.

      I think we need to think about the people of Mt. Airy. I worked in NC and saw the devastation that sending textile jobs overseas did to the state. NC was good to me and I think the people there are hard workers and need a chance. Screw the council make them mad by bringing in Beck and doing what is right for the people not the politicians.

    Mt Airy is a text book example of a small textile town whose jobs have been given to third world teens and women. More conservative than the rest of the state, NC is famous for their “half backs”, New Yorkers who moved to Florida and the halfway back.

    Are their other towns actively vying for the business?
    He should put it in Berkley or Madison just to f with them

      Like Glenn stated on his radio program. He is NOT going to let this small town politics run his decision making. FORGET NC they blew this chance. FIRE all their city council commissioners and maybe then they can have a chance. 10,000 jobs lost come on!! Someone screwed up a long time ago and now gain. TAKE the political agenda and fire them!! Maybe then JOBS will come back.

      The policies of both the Republican and Democrat globalists of the last two decades, have been at the core of the loss of jobs in America. GATT and NAFTA, coupled with non-competitive tax rates forced businesses to relocate to other nations. It is American policies, of whatever political stripe that are at fault.

    A couple of months ago I saw Bill O’Reilly tring to defend why the shirts for sale on his website are made elsewhere…..I forget if it was either Haiti or Honduras.This was supposedly because there wasn’t any manufacturing plant left in America that could fill his orders.That is an astonishing statement.On the other hand,Glenn Beck who already has about 100 employees,is looking to create more jobs by starting a business making that stuff in America again…And I bet none of these will be minimum wage jobs….Big business owners have gotten into bed with government to get richer making cheap goods in other countries as the American middle class falls apart.Its going to take the small businessmen like Beck and others to get America working again but if its attempted i fear the government will try to snuff them out with stiff regulations and higher taxes.

      Bill O’reilly is full of it. I live in Southeastern NC and there is a plant up the road called MJ Soffee. They would be glad to get O‘reillys’ contract. They are making tee shirts and sports shirts every day. They would expand their operation if needed. O’Reilly is not the man he claims to be…………

    I am guessing that a few good citizens of town showed the Board the error of their ways. Good for them. I hope they get the contract and then I hope they vote out the idiots on the Board at the next election.

    I was recently in NC but not Mount Airey but I was surprised, disappointed, and saddened by the amount of liberals I encountered, every other car had a “co-exist” sticker on the bumper. I know a week vacationing doesn‘t equal a lifetime but I’m moving there in a year or so, I hope I encounter other like-minded people but so far I’m not impressed.

      I’ve lived in NC my entire life, and I was deeply upset when my state went for Obama in the 2008 election. My husband and I are very conservative, and all but a couple of our friends and family are also. There are still lots of us here. It sounds like you may have been in the Raleigh/Research Triangle Area. The locals call Cary, one of its surrounding towns, “Containment Area for Relocated Yankees” or “Community of Affluent and Rich Yankees.” And, our beloved UNC-CH is extremely liberal. That being said, there are still TONS of fiscally conservative, independent thinking people here. I would love for Glenn to bring his business to Mt. Airy.

      I live in Pilot Mountain, a 15 minute drive from Mt. Airy, and the area is pretty conservative and a great place to live and work. I work with individuals with disabilities and assist them with finding employment, the jobs would be welcomed in the area. Don’t judge the state by a few libs you ran into. Just stay away from Asheville. A great town to visit but wouldn’t want to live there, very liberal. As can be seen by the march happening tomorrow…Asheville Women Plan Protest For Right To Go Topless

      If you really want to move to a more conservative state, may I suggest Tennessee! Have lived here for 9 years in a small town of 5,000 people and love it. Taxes are low and the area is beautiful here in Eastern Tennessee.
      And yes, I am a displaced Yankee, but they don’t hold that against me.

      Ashville and Raleigh-Durham are both left leaning. Mt Airy is in the western mountain/foothills areas that are conservative. There have been many textiles that have left the area for other countries due to cheaper labor. They have all left Wilkes county as well. The “coexist” stickers are usually on Subarus and other cars of those that are “educated” (brain-washed) by the liberal professors. Most of those also have Obama stickers as well. That is definition enough of the “coexist” people.

      I was in Asheville and Charlotte and parts in-between, I own property east of Ashville and hope to build a home there soon, I love the area, beauty, surroundings and the people are nicest I’ve encountered everywhere in the town I have my land…though I never talked politics with anyone I saw all the co-exist and a few Obama stickers on every other car, of course on the highway near Ashville and Charlotte but I currently live in North Florida, work at a university and still though surrounded by liberals the amounts on the roads in NC was mind-blowing, and yes I also noticed they were all on nice affluent cars/suvs too which made me shake my head, I do notice being from FL as we’re very familiar with them that NC also has a lot of transplants from the Northeast.

    I wish this town much success, in spite of the lefts opposition to bringing jobs back. Once they are up and running, we need to design tee shirts that represent us for the 2012 election. I don’t care how much it costs, I‘ll buy it if it’s made here. I hate red and purple and am leaning towards red, white & blue. I remember somebody pointing out that those colors don’t run. I think they represent the best of us and I might suggest we put In God we Trust someplace on the Tee to really piss off the left.

      Couldn’t agree more. Those two are absolute idiots for Obama and I thought the commissioners didn’t want to encourage politics. Is it only conservatives they don’t want?? Most of the small towns in NC are VERY conservative (I live in one) and they are all hurting. You can’t drive 10 miles without seeing closed plants and hardworking people begging for jobs. Mt. Airy needs to fire their commissioners. Jobs ought to come before their politics.

      The mayor of this town and a lot of locals are doing their best to get GB to consider their town for his facility and because a few members on a commission are ignorant of what GB stands for, some here are ready to grab pitchforks and torches, tear down Andy and Opie statues, yada yada…

      Where do you live FLY? They can move the Andy and Ron Statues to your town and you can rap your flag around them 24/7 365 while watching his video… “Ron Howard’s call to action” with Andy Griffith and Henry Winkler endorsing the election of Barack Obama in 2008.

      Hollywood, their Liberal inhabitants and their views are part of the problem with this country and especially in Mayberry’s all across America who let the indoctrination get the better of them and what common sense they “may” have had at one time… long ago…

    They went the extra mile to show they want the business. These types of jobs do not need to be legacy jobs as she indicated. There are only a few dozen of small American Companies making shirts, pants, socks, shoes, boots and more that employ Americans right now. Many would not move overseas because they knew they needed to stay in the US for the sake of the US and their familes. They all need our help right now in the form of business. Keep your money in the US and keep your Job in the US the job you save could be you own!     I have family from and in Mt. Airy. It was once a textile town. Now all those jobs are in Maylasia or Singapore….
    I hope Glenn DOES bring the T-shirt business there.
    Then it will prove that Glenn Beck has created more jobs that Obama….

    Maybe some day fools like those on the Board of Commissioners will realize that THEIR ideology is what is really hurting this country. Turning a business away has to say something about where their priorities are and how they do not have the welfare of their town as their agenda. Wonder what Glenn is going to do? I don’t know if the town elects these Commissioner or if they are appointed, but if elected, vote them out.

If Glenn picks Mount Airy, N.C., the members of their Board of Commissioners should be quickly replaced by the citizens for Conservative Capitalists and let Capitalism do it’s thing. They are an example of what Freedom to Fail is all about; when they were faced with bringing true HOPE and CHANGE to their town, here’s what they did…. they chose to Forsake their Citizens!! Unbelievable!! The last thing that this town needs is their political opinions and Liberal ideologies to stand in the way of bringing this city back!!
      Mount Airy continues to be a Ghost Town? Why? Their Board of Commissioners, obviously!
