McCain on ‘Game Change’: I Don‘t Understand Why They ’Continue to Disparage and Attack’ Palin

The morning after the premiere of HBO’s “Game Change,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said aspects of the film were flat-out inaccurate and did not depict what really happened behind the scenes of his presidential campaign.

“Game Change,” based on a book about the 2008 election by the same name, follows the decision to pick Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate and her subsequent role in the campaign. Even though the book tracked both the Democratic and Republican tickets, the HBO film focuses exclusively on Palin, characterizing her at one point as being on the “verge of a complete nervous breakdown.”

“I don’t understand, even in the tough world of politics, why there continues to be such assaults on a good and decent person, Sarah Palin, a fine family person, a person whose nomination energized our campaign,” McCain, played by actor Ed Harris in the film, said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“They continue to disparage and attack her character and her person,” he added.

McCain — who said he “of course” did not watch the film — said the prominently-featured “Then find me a woman” quote spoken by Harris absolutely did not happen.

He said the film also wrongly depicted him as a frequent user of coarse language, saying he has “a larger vocabulary than that.”

“I thought that she was the best-qualified person, I thought she had the ability to excite our party and the kind of person I wanted to see succeed in the political arena,” McCain said of picking Palin.

McCain’s tone is markedly different from other campaign alumni who said they found the film to be an accurate portrayal.

Nicole Wallace, a former senior campaign adviser featured prominently in the film, said on ABC’s “This Week” it was “true enough to make me squirm.”

Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked McCain about comments recently made by Steve Schmidt, who called the film “the true story of what happened over those 10 weeks” and said he regrets “playing a part in the process that yielded someone on the ticket who was not prepared to be president.”

“I regret that he would make such a statement,” McCain answered stiffly.

Palin herself has hit back at the film with her own video titled “Game Change We Can Believe In,” meant as a takeoff on the film’s trailer.

The film’s premiere also earned a mention on Saturday Night Live –  though without Tina Fey’s infamous Palin impersonation. Watch as Andy Samberg attempted to fill her shoes:

Liberals love to bash women, that‘s why Obama is trying to smooth them over a bit with his latest rantings on women’s rights. He could care less about anyone’s rights except his own, his Koran does not speak well of women. However, since he’s here in this country he needs to get their votes, so on with the propaganda.

Fellow American’s Palin is not finished – we still have the most important election in America’s history coming in Nov – McCain may sleep through it, but I assure you Palin is going to be right in the middle of it swinging away.

I love the other comments – with just the mention of Palin’s names – the haters come out of the wood work – they can’t stand the fact that Palin represents what is right about America and they represent everything that is wrong about America.

“The two major sources for the film and the book on which it was based, McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt and communications director Nicole Wallace, attempt to make themselves look good—as the “responsible ones” behind an effort that may have been a winning one if only everyone had just listened to them. Please. In order to save their own skins, they threw Palin under the bus in the most rude and low-rent ways. That actually makes them MORE disgraceful than the leftwingers who made this Obama propaganda piece.”

When and how did we know that the upcoming HBO film “Game Change” would be a total and complete hit job produced only with destroying Sarah Palin in mind? Well, we knew that the moment the film was announced back in March of 2011. For starters, the material upon which the film is based, the book “Game Change,” written by left-wing political journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, is itself a hit-job, and a poorly sourced one at that.

HBO claims that “Game Change, the book, was applauded by audiences and pundits on both ends of the political spectrum.” Really? If this is true, just like the writers of the book, HBO doesn’t name any of their sources to back it up. There are plenty of people on the record however, who did not applaud John Heilemann and Mark Halperin’s work.

Howard Kurtz wrote that the authors not identifying their sources was a “recurring weakness” in the book, and later added: The most cooperative sources may have gotten to spin the narrative their way, and no one – such as Steve Schmidt, the former McCain aide who has publicly criticized Palin – was pressed to be on the record.”

Don Campbell from USA Today called it: “A gossipy, behind-the-scenes presidential campaign book once again illustrates how the public is poorly served by some in the political press corps.”

For decades, conservatives have been silent for fear of being the next target. Our silence only emboldened the radicals, because they assumed we either all agreed with them, or we were too afraid to confront them. “The ‘Game Change’ trailer doesn’t reflect anything I recall.” — Jason Recher, Advisor to the McCain Campaign who was with Governor Palin during nearly every waking moment of the ‘08 election.

From the Associated Press: “Palin wasn’t the primary focus of the book, and he said he told screenwriter and co-executive producer Danny Strong that the book “absolutely, unequivocally” did not accurately reflect his time with the McCain campaign.

During the same conference call, Randy Scheunemann, who also worked as an adviser to Palin during the presidential campaign said: “If the book was very misleading, the movie’s going to be far worse.” Other current and former aides to Palin who attended the conference call, criticized Heilemann and Halperin “for writing about Palin when they weren’t physically there covering the things that were reported in the book.”

Recher and McMarlin traveled with Palin during the 2008 campaign and have been at Palin’s side during nearly every public appearance she has made in the last year or so. Recher said he reviewed daily schedules and plane manifests from the campaign and concluded that neither author of “Game Change” was ever present, and that Schmidt was present on only five of 200 bus or plane trips taken by Palin during her two months of campaigning.

What’s going on is a fanatical, irrational hatred and attack on anything perceived to be Christian. Notice the more religious a candidate is perceived to be, the more vicious the attacks against them. The more intense the name calling. The more vile comments. That’s the bottom line.

Palin fired up a radical religious base, and the less educated. That might work for firing up the republican radical right base, but the general voting public does not want and uneducated person or a religious nut running this country. Yet republican candidates keep moving to the far right and making the same mistake they made in 2008.

What an absolutely ignorant comment! Watch “The Undefeated” and you’ll see the real Sarah Palin. She was far better qualified to be VP than Joe Biden … and she certainly achieved more with her administrative experience as a mayor and governor than the ‘do nothing’ Senator Obama did for Illinois and the US.

The Democrats thought they had the race in the bag until Sarah emerged. They got scared and switched into attack mode. This is typical Saul Alinsky strategy … when all else fails, mock and tear down a person’s character by telling lies and exaggerating the truth. They pretty much ignored McCain and started comparing Palin to Obama, as though she was the candidate running for President, not McCain. I don’t know of any other time in history when a VP running mate was given more attention than the Presidential candidate. Have you ever asked yourself why?

“Game Change,” which is to air March 10, depicts Scheunemann explaining to Palin that Germany was the antagonist in both World Wars. (In the scene, a note-taking Palin, played by Julianne Moore, does not indicate whether she knew this or not.)

“The idea that there was at any point that Gov. Palin expressed any uncertainty as to who were the various sides in World War I or World War II … or any other war is absolutely untrue,” Scheunemann said. “She was incredibly intelligent. She asked very informed questions. She was very interested and she wanted to understand John McCain’s view of foreign policy because she wanted to be the best possible vice presidential nominee.”

I have the impression that she is a woman of good character and above average intelligence. However, at least in 2008, IF the movie is to be believed, she had a severely limited knowledge base.
She was comfortable at the level of her family, friends and local community, though a little insecure about how Alaska as a whole felt about her. But those were areas she knew thoroughly. She was also a woman of firm faith, echt conservative on questions of life, gender, science, and so on. When asked about her commitment to the campaign (again, IF “Game Change” is accurate), she says something about having a “servant calling,” clearly churchspeak. I think she may have been experiencing a personal crisis, what with caring for Trig, wondering what to do about Levi, and taking on Ted Stevens, and was looking for God to send her a “sign.: enter John McCain’s handlers..She probably knows the Bible pretty well, and is conversant with many points of theology. What she did NOT know much about 4 years ago was the myriad levels between the familial and the eternal: the US as a whole, its history, its system of government, its political culture, its economy, its national media. Not to mention the division of Korea, the difference between Iraq and Afghanistan, and the location of Germany. (World War II I’ll give her, even she must watch the History Channel.) Most striking–again, IF “Game Change” is right–was her outright REFUSAL to learn anything but a few basic talking points.

Let’s see… why attack John McCain? — Just another silly Progressive; There is no Kick there! Now… Palin is a fiesty Conservative… who will respond in kind… and be defended by supporters — Ah, just, the right one… to take the Eyes of the Administration as they attempt to do something sneaky!

I just finished watching the movie. They have to make Sarah Palin look like an idiot because liberal men are afraid of women who are strong beautiful and intelligent and in general tougher than them. The liberal women hate her because she represents conservative women who can do dishes shoot an ar15, raise a bunch of God fearing children and look good while doing it. I love Sarah Palin she is a genuinely kind wonderful human being.

    Thanks for your service, Mr.McCain

“I don’t understand” That was exactly why you sucked as a candidate. Too many years rubbing elbows and trying to get along with DEMOCRAT Thieves and Murderers . If Sarah was at the top of the ticket, we would have won.

I think you are right. At least she wouldn’t have campaigned with statements on national TV (which I heard live) that “You have nothing to fear if Mr. Obama is elected president.”

Not real sure McCain didn’t throw the election.
