Does That Woman in Maryland Really Have One of the Winning Lottery Tickets?

Maryland McDonalds Worker Wins $105 Million in Lottery, Co Workers Claim its Part of Office Pool

A Maryland McDonald’s employee claims to have the yet-unclaimed winning lottery ticket worth around $105 million. But there are several catches – for one thing, she says she only recognizes “some of” the numbers on her ticket, and her co-workers are saying they pooled their money for the tickets, making the winning ticket theirs as opposed to just hers.

First, there’s the matter of whether she actually has the ticket. Fox DC reports:

Pressed as the day went on, she became more cagey.

“I don’t know if I won,” she said. “Some of the numbers were familiar. I recognized some of [them]. I’m going to go to the lottery office [Monday]. I bought some tickets separately.”

With winning tickets also sold in Illinois and Kansas, a single Maryland winner would get an after tax lump sum of $105 million, or $5.59 million a year for 26 years.

So it’s far from clear whether the story is true. And even if it is, Wilson may owe some of that money to her coworkers, even though she claims she bought the ticket separately from them.

‘We had a group plan, but I went and played by myself. [The ‘winning’ ticket] wasn’t on the group plan,’ Mirlande Wilson told The New York Post.

The Post explains:

The group’s tickets — along with a list of those who contributed to the pool — were left in an office safe at the burger joint…

Then, late Friday, before the night’s drawing, the owner of the McDonald’s, Birul Desai, gave Wilson $5 to buy more tickets for the pool on her way home from work, and she went back to the 7-Eleven and bought them, Allen [a man who contributed to the pool] said.

Wilson took those tickets home with her, Allen said.

But Wilson insisted yesterday that she had bought the second batch with an unidentified pal — not for the pool — and that the winning ticket was among them.

The 37-year old Haitian immigrant and single mother of seven reportedly surprised her colleagues, calling them to yell, “I won! I won!” after the numbers were revealed.

Now, after incurring the wrath of her co-workers, she has begun to concede.

One of the men who contributed to the pool reportedly told her, “These people are going to kill you.  It’s not worth your life!”  She responded, “All right!  All right!  I’ll share, but I can’t find the ticket right now.”

However, lottery officials have reviewed the security footage of the 7-Eleven where the ticket was purchased and believe that a man bought the winning ticket.  If Wilson indeed has it, it is unclear why she has waited so long to claim her winnings.

“It’s all bulls—t, if you ask me,” said Birul Desai, the McDonald’s owner.

Wilson had previously said that she would show up to claim her winnings today. However, she was a no-show at Maryland lottery offices, suggesting the story may actually be untrue. Watch a local report on the confusing incident here:

    How stupid can people be?

If this woman is a “winner”, does she really expect her fellow pool members to allow her to claim her own “private” ticket won?

If I played the lottery any more than I do now, I would NEVER, EVER get into a pool. Too many chances for conflict. Sounds to me like if this woman did win by buying her ticket separately, these greedy pigs still want the money. How come it is that people demand you share when you have money, but when you have problems or sorrows, they want to part of it?

Pools work if you do them right. You put your money together, buy the tickets, photo copy them and give everyone a copy. I do this at work. We have a weekly amount we owe to the pool, we purchase tickets twice a week, it is very organized and the person buying the tickets could not cheat.

If I worked somewhere that had no easy access to photocopy them, I’d not play the pool. It is the only way to protect yourself.

Nice story but it missed the biggest piece of news. Here is what our local papers reported: Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Carole Everett said Monday, “I never expected, based on that story, that this is the actual winner. We really won’t believe anybody till they walk in with a ticket and the ticket is valid — and they have identification.”
So the state of MD requires an ID TO CLAIM A LOTTERY PRIZE. Why cannot our Pres., Holder and the Dems also require ID TO VOTE IN OUR ELECTIONS?

This is the fools pool story repeated about unclear ownership.

      Who’s ticket was it?

Such pools should all have clear titling of of who payed in how much and what tickets are logged to that pool.
The organizer should pitch in extra for hard print or electronic copies sent to each pool member.
Dollar in and ticket out items should balance out prior to the drawing day.

The same pooling issue is more common among worker unions.
The benefits often accrue up the union leadership chain, the debts, and dues are paid by the suckers who joined. Everybody pays, but only a few really win, often the organizer, who lives really well, yet does the least amount of the work affiliated with that union, surprise , surprise.

    Wow!

If this fable, uh, I mean article, is true, then this Haitian woman reminds me of the majority of current Republicans (both elected -publicans, and those -publicans who voted for and thus elected the other -publicans). How, you may ask yourself, does this woman remind me of -publicans? Well, she is a narcissistic, self-centered, greedy SOB! Thats how! — Just like the Ryan Budget and those who support the Ryan Budget. I guess that tens of millions of dollars is not enough for this “prize” of a human being! Greedy bastard -publican!

The group tickets were in the safe.

This women held tickets that someone “says” were also part of the groups tickets.

FAIL – as self appointed judge, I award the winnings to the person holding the ticket.

Those who claim they were group tickets have no proof, no contract and counter proof since some tickets were in the safe.

Done.- unless they threaten her in which case they go to jail.

Having never played the lottery in any form or fashion, I don’t know how it works. But how do the lottery people know IN ADVANCE which ticket will win. Seems like that must be how it works, otherwise how would they know from watching video who purchased the winning ticket? Or are the numbers recorded somehow as the tickets are purchased and that’s how they know? Someone clue me in please. And thanks.

It’s all computerized, they can find where the winning numbers were bought just as easy as you can pull up a contact on your phone. As for the video I’m sure they have an agreement to see video footage at the time of sale.
