Media in a Frenzy Over Rep‘s Response to ’Who is Going to Shoot Obama?’

It was a short, shocking question: “Who is going to shoot Obama?”

That’s what a town hall attendee asked Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) at a meeting Tuesday night. The question apparently drew chuckles from the audience (it’s unclear if they were “funny” chuckles or nervous chuckles). Broun responded to the question by blowing it off. But now, the media is going crazy over what he said.

The response wasn’t anything groundbreaking. When the man posed the question, Broun chose to use three sentences that changed the subject, brushing aside the question instead of engaging the content of the absurd query:

The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

But it‘s what he didn’t say that has many outlets up in arms.

A story on the Huffington Post says “rather than confronting the questioner or condemning the question, Broun instead acknowledged ‘frustration’ with Obama … .” Gawker sarcastically adds, “and hopefully nobody will shoot the president. That would have probably been a good thing to include.” The Daily Best lectures, “Some questions you want to dodge, others you want to rebuke. This was one of the latter,” while Salon describes Broun’s response as “not object[ing] to the question.” And Politco writes “the Republican didn’t come anywhere near condemning the question in his response.”

For a little bit this morning, HuffPo even had the confusing, front-page headline, “SHOCK: Congressman Asked, ‘Who is Going to Shoot Obama?“ It eventually changed that headline to say ”Congressman Is Asked,” however the old headline still appeared as a tease on the upper part of the page when a reader looked at other stories:

Media in a Frenzy Over Reps Response to Who is Going to Shoot Obama?But what none of those news outlets are asking is, “What if the question was a plant?” Considering a recently-revealed Democratic (and union) plan to flood local town hall meetings, it’s a possibility.

The Hill covered the plan yesterday:

Democratic strategists believe their Tea Party moment has arrived.

Working with labor unions and liberal groups, they are using the Presidents Day congressional recess to organize a public backlash against billions of dollars in cuts to federal programs.

One labor organizer said that members have been urged to attend congressional town-hall meetings to ask Republican lawmakers “pointed questions” about the cuts they supported last week.

And guess who else is supporting the move? The liberal, Soros-funded Moveon.org (which is also sponsoring the Van Jones-endorsed 50-state protest marathon this weekend):

Justin Ruben, the executive director of MoveOn.org, a progressive advocacy group, has also encouraged members to grill lawmakers at town-hall meetings.

“Whenever we hear about a town-hall meeting we encourage them to go and ask pointed questions about what is happening,” he said.

“I don’t think that was the case,” Broun’s D.C.-based spokesman Austin Carson told The Blaze. While he says there is a chance the questioner could be a “plant,” he feels it’s more likely the man was just asking a ridiculous question with no ulterior “gotcha” motives.

Still, other questions remain. The simplest being, “Did the congressman not engage the questioner — and stand up to him — because he was afraid the man was legitimately unstable (thus making it dangerous to do call him out)?” We don’t yet know — Carson referred specific questions about the congressman’s response and thoughts to his district-based spokesperson. We are awaiting her response.

Carson did say he was shocked to see HuffPo’s original headline, saying that as it was previously written “There‘s no way that’s true.”

And according to him, the media frenzy may have just begun: MSNBC host Chris Matthews called the office seeking comment. An official statement will be released sometime today.

    A misleading headline on HUFFYPO???? Wouldn’t it be more of a shocking story if there was an accurate Headline on HUFFYPO?
    Obamao is such a disappointment to Soros, but if anything violent happens to him I’m sure the DOJ and law enforcement will only be looking at TEA Partiers and Rebuplicans as the culprits.

    Just wondering if any of these liberal propaganda sites asked these same questions when people were killing Bush in effigy? Just wondering. Did they speak out against any movies that show Bush being assassinated? Or compared to someone who tried to wipe out a whole race of people?

      Hi Rizz. I‘m liberal and couldn’t stand Bush/Hitler comparisons. Didn’t see the movie — was there more than one? — about the assassination of Bush, so I can’t speak to that. I wouldn’t be surprised if left-leaning sites did condemn the kind of over-the-top rhetoric you speak of. Not every person to the left of center is a crazed “leftie.” Regards.

      Funny thing is “the left” didn’t make it. It was a mockumentary made in Britain not here. It was mostly ignored but Hillary Clinton said when asked about it:

      “I think it’s despicable. I think it’s absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick.”

    Look at his words about comfortable shoes and picketing for collective bargaining. Just one simple example. He passes bills loaded with earmarks then tells the people we need to control earmarks.

    I think his response was appropriate. His specific reference to next year‘s election WAS directly related to how we replace presidents who we don’t like in this country. We replace them through the political process. It was not an endorsement of the question. The question was dumb and I think his brief response shows that he thought that it was dumb.

      Basically a non-story, but made a story by the media microscope looking for anything to use as ammo against Obama opposition. I think Broun should probably said that nobody should shoot the president, but his not saying implies nothing. Until someone in the media can prove they know what is in someone’s heart, they should just shut up and stop the constant prowling.

      The LIBERALS respond to the question, and the good answer, by playing politics and, worse yet, CONTINUING THEIR CONSTANT VENTING OF ANGER against citizens are unhappy with a President who does bad things. They do not control the very same type of emotions that the questioner had.

      The LIBERALS can be angry, but a citizen can’t (though we all agree the citizen chose the wrong words).

      What if the questioner had a loaded gun in his pocket and, after being immediately confronted and denounced by the Congressman (getting the immediate punishment the Liberals want), the man then, now feeling even MORE angry and alone and betrayed by his political “friends”, pulled out the gun and began shooting?

      Doesn’t the Congressman have the right to fear for his life, and the wisdom to protect others in the audience by “turning the other cheek” or by “a kind word turns away wrath”?

      Thank you very much, angry liberals, but we will use God’s way of fighting our battles and ministering to our people, and leave you to your unkind, unrealistic, unproductive “arm chair quarterbacking politics”.

      I hate to say it but you are right if anyone did attempt something so stupid it would be one of their own, or someone who is outright nuts. Soros, Jones and others are blaming BHO for not doing enough… hey are “on his side” and unhappy so it IS safe to say that god forbid something was to happen it would be ones of his “own”. Glenn went over this back during the Giffords shooting too I dont think one shooter he covered was a conservative. They were all crazy or communist marxists.

      Right now the radicals protesting are the ones actually acting out and using hateful rhetoric conservatives and TEA Party protesters have been peaceful for the mos part oh and clean leaving their place of operations spotless unlike the liberals and radicals. The same people who are desperate to incite violence as the stress levels continue to rise. They have nothing to stand on and its why they are acting out.

      No matter what hold your ground do not engage these people and should you know of anyone who is even remotely considering something so stupid as what is suggested here toward the Pres. it is your DUTY to turn them in. We may not be fans of BHO but we have to protect him b/c if something was to happen to him it will be VERY BAD for the nation!

      I see nothing wrong with the way Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) responded. If it had been me, I would have simply ignored the mans question and said loudly “next question” and turned to someone else.

      The question deserves no response because it was a non-starter. For some reason politicians sometimes feel obligated to say ‘something’ whenever asked a question.

      I can’t even believe this is a story! I would say Paul Broun ignored the ridiculous question because it was not worthy of acknowledging. He is my rep. and it would not surprise me if it was a plant to stir something up. There are alot of progressives in this district because it is a college town with lots of liberal professors and lemming students. But plant or not, to me, this is truly a reach for the libs to make into a story.

      It is hard for some people to speak in front of a camera, over the years I have heard some real zingers from Newt, Rush, Greta, Bill and Sean – and just about every other media professional. Especially Gretchen and Brian, lately. Obviously they misspoke – just like this non-radio/TV person did. Don’t get hung up enough to not pay attention to the message – even as horribly stated as it was. Please do not be a negative wussie pussie.

      IN RESPONSE TO WHATF4. You are probably right. Ceasar was wary about his enemies but negligent in regards to “friends” like Brutus. Malcom X was shot and killed by fellow Nation of Islam members. Jesse James was killed by a close family “friend”. Hopefully nothing like that will happen to Obama and he’ll be voted out of office in November 2012 or possibly impeached for being an illegitimate president, tried and convicted of fraud.
