Media Matters Apologizes to Drudge Over Trayvon Martin Tweet

Ever since the story of Trayvon Martin’s killing broke, Media Matters for America has appointed themselves the guardians of the slain teen’s memory. Now they’ve ended up on the receiving end of criticism for being inaccurate.

Recently, more and more information regarding Martin’s personal life and social media usage has been entering the news cycle. Along with this information, alleged photos of Martin closer to the time of the shooting have also leaked. The Drudge Report recently used one such photo to promote a story – a photo taken from Martin’s facebook profile and showing the 17-year-old black teen grinning at the camera through gold teeth.

Media Matters blogger MJ Rosenberg accused the Drudge Report of using the photo to incite racial tension over Twitter. He also claimed the photo was fake. Fake photos of Martin have appeared on the internet recently. However, the one the Drudge Report reproduced has not been conclusively determined to be one of them. As such, Rosenberg was attacking the wrong person. Rosenberg has since had to apologize to Drudge for jumping the gun. Fox News reports:

“Racist demagogue Drudge continues to run photo of some kid, not Trayvon for incitement purposes,” MJ Rosenberg initially tweeted at 10:56 a.m. ET, after drudgereport.com and other media sites posted a photo of Martin sporting a tank top, looking noticeably older and bigger than he appears in a photograph widely carried by media outlets that have reported on the story.

Rosenberg followed that posting by retweeting a message saying, “Matt Drudge has done more to debase American news coverage than anyone in history of country.”

But he was tweeting a different tune at 1:03 p.m., when he wrote, “Mixed up Drudge photo of Trayvon w Michelle Malkin’s. Malkin’s is an admitted fake. Drudge? Don’t know. Sorry.” That tweet was immediately followed by another saying, “Malkin apologized for fake #Trayvon photo. I apologize for mixing up her photo with one Drudge used.”

The “apology” is notable insofar as it is only an apology over a factual error, not for the charge of racism, or “incitement.” Ironically, Rosenberg himself has been accused of racism in the past by Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz, who slammed Rosenberg for calling pro-Israel Jews “Israel firsters.” Rosenberg’s response? “Go to Hell.”

      This is called Yellow Journalism. If you say the same lie long enough it becomes the truth. I don’t know if this kid was good or bad so it is sad that his life was wasted, but if he was having all of this trouble in his life maybe having two parents to watch over him might have helped. It appears that he had begun to run the streets at a young age and just maybe he learned some bad habits. It is too bad for both of them.

    What about the 13 year old kid who was doused in gasoline and set on fire by two black kids, saying “you deserve this white boy”? Black on white violence gets no press. I suppose in the eyes of some, black on white violence isn’t a hate crime, but if anything happens to a person of color, it’s a hate crime. Now with Trayvon, the accused is of mixed race, and it gets full court press.

      It doesn‘t uphold the victimization theory propounded by the Ultra Liberal press that’s why. According to Holder and Obozo and the rest of the Criminals at the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Criminal Injustice, blacks can‘t be racist’s and that black on white crime is somehoew desreved, no matter that there is a equal protection clause in the constitution that is NOT being enforced if the victim is white. Every one of the white victims should sue the DOJ for non feasance, if that clause isn’t applied.

      That is a BRUTAL hate-crime which is BEING INVESTIGATED. The point in the Trayvon case is that a youth is dead and the investigation was closed until the national attention. The chief investigator found Zimmerman’s story (that night) to be not credible and recommended manslaughter charges.

    Watched an episode of the first 48 today. A black man stabbed a white woman 70 times in her bed as she awoke to see she was being robbed. The detectives brought the guy in. Seemed legit. Even explained the wounds on his hands. Hell, I even believed him. They let him go. Took over three week‘s or so and they caught the same guy selling the victim’s bling at a pawn shop.. Even though the majority of the detective‘s were black I wasn’t outraged. Due process and evidence get’s a killer. This story make’s me sick to my stomach.

    Offering links to the aggregate of available news is somehow debasing it? Sounds like this demagogue Rosenberg dude has a short fuse – clinging to his own prejudices for no other reason. He cannot even keep the facts straight with who is right or wrong. Poor senses in rush to judgment appears to be a pattern when engaging mouth before the brain has time to observe and cognitively process all the facts.

    The media often uses images to manipulate a façade of guilt and innocent in the court of public opinion. Trickle out little details of a story for ratings and enflame the faithful viewer and second hand versions to mere fabrications.

    One cultures over reaction for this unfortunate incident similar to what we have come to expect with rumor of a Koran burning ; verses near silence over fully intentional killings within the culture. Where victory over a perceived enemy is far more important than truth they refuse to see in the first place.

      No, I don’t see how it could be a “function of percentages” actually. If a population is 50% white and 25% black, this does not create a likelihood that blacks commit violence on whites twice as frequently as the other way around. While it’s true that there are twice as many whites available to be victims, it is also true that there are twice as many whites available to be perpetrators.

      It’s also true that the most obvious conclusion — that blacks perpetrate more violence than whites — is not the only possible conclusion. The 50-to-1 article itself doesn’t exist, so it’s not clear where the underlying statistics are coming from. There is clear racial bias in the policing of crimes, and in the justice system itself… that’s been proven repeatedly by well-crafted studies, although it it’s highly unlikely to be the whole of the difference. If, for example, blacks are 10 times more likely to be convicted when charged with a violent crime, the 50-to-1 statistics will reflect that difference if based on convictions.

      There isn’t really any question that there are higher prevalence of things like hard drug use, property crimes, and violence among blacks v. whites. It’s not clear that these remain the case if you control for things like income and neighborhood. The color of a person‘s skin certainly isn’t the cause.

    I don’t care what photo the media shows, as long as they show a photo of Trayvon Martin at 17 years old and six foot two, instead of the photos of him as a small child.
    Also, the George Zimmerman photo, is of Zimmerman when he was 40 pounds heavier than he actually is now days.
    They are trying to portray Zimmerman as a huge man, who attacked a tiny little boy.

      Not to mention that MS(Liberal)Media put out a contrasting pic of stern-faced Zimmerman in orange jail-wear to deliberately prejudice public opinion against him. Police previously caught Martin (6′3″) with a bag of jewelry and a screwdriver… when asked to explain the bag of jewelry, Martin said a friend gave it to him, but couldn’t remember his friend’s name. It is far more likely that Martin was out scoping another neighborhood for some more free gold rather than what MSLM would have us believe; that he had innocently stepped out to pick up a bag of Skittles. Clearly, Martin knowing he had already been previously caught, identified and suspected of home burglaries could not readily afford to be caught again… so, he went for it.

    he can’t seem to focus on one boogieman. he probably goes into a panic attack while driving past churches. (he previously has written how christians are the blame…or mormons…or bapist, catholics ect.) to be honest i am amazed he didn’t implicate the pope on this shooting.

    Everyone will be apologizing when all of the truth comes out about this thug. We haven’t even touched on the tip of the iceberg with this violent thieving druggie. The bottom line is he got what was coming. It was self-defense and in the end the whole truth will come out. Everyone keeps saying that Zimmerman continued to follow this thug after the dispatcher told him to stop. Where is your evidence? Any of you where is your freaking evidence that Zimmerman continued to follow. The cops know what you do not know. They know where the body was and I will bet big bucks that it was laying next to Zimmermans vehicle. This thug came up and tried to kill Zimmerman when he was getting back into his vehicle and Zimmerman did what he had to do. End of story.

      Hey kisses, At the very least you have to give Zimmerman some credit. He was on the ground getting pummeled for a while before he shot the kid. It’s not like he shot him on sight. It sounds like he showed a good deal of restraint.

      KISSES6350, Frankly, NOT A CRAZY may likely be right. Sure, Zimmerman was armed and never has said that he wasn’t, nor has he denied his shooting of Martin. As far as Martin not being armed if it is true that he attacked Zimmerman and if he did beat Zimmerman’s head against a concrete walkway that is aggravated assault and battery. The round penetrated Martin’s chest as has been pointed out here earlier and not in his back. It does appear that Martin was shot while on top of Zimmerman, but I really don’t want to speculate any further. I would much prefer that the investigation be concluded and hear or read their results. I’d also like to point out that Zimmerman was arrested at the scene and eventually transported to the police station. It was the DA or an Assistant DA who upon reviewing the matter released Zimmerman in what appeared to be a case of self defense. When attacked on the ground I hardly see that as a Stand Your Ground situation. The media has taken this incident and has run away with their attack on the Florida law.

      KISSES..he was unarmed and an eyewitness has Martin smashing ZImmerman’s head into the pavement. Do you need a knife or a gun to take someone‘s life when you’re smashing their head into the pavement? The police examined Zimmerman, his injuries corroborate his story. Can you tell me..if Martin was just an innocent child and never up to no good..why was he suspended from school for having drug paraphenalia, burglary tools and womens’ jewelry on him?

      Kisses so if I go to meet my girlfriend somewhere but she’s not there. I look for her and I find her geting ra ped by a 20 yr old black thug, and I confront him. He attacks me knocks me to the ground and starts punching me, so I pull my knife and stab him in the throat. I just killed an unarmed black “kid” so it’s automatically my fault I killed him right? I know this scenario is extreme but any case where a person is killed is extreme. And to clarify my little hypothetical story’s point. A person is always armed, that is unless they have to arms to begin with. 10 lbs of pressure (such as a punch) will crush a person’s windpipe. 5lbs of pressure if applied correctly will snap a person’s neck. Depending on the location of the hit 10 lbs of rapidly pressure applied to the center of chest can stop a person’s heart. If applied to the sternum(apex of lower ribs) it can snap off and be driven into the lungs. A hard punch to the liver can cause bruising and could lead to failure. And by bashing a guys head against the ground you could A) Drive bone fragments either into to back of the brain or into the cerebral cortex. B) Cause severe cranial hemorrhaging. C) Cause permanent brain damage do to the brain coming in contact with the skull(Knock Out) too many times. Obviously almost ALL of these will be if not immediately then a delayed death.

      He just disowned him like a red headed half white stepchild….like his momma and daddy sadly did to him so they created all this ancillary stuff to take us away from the fact that character matters and who you parents are and lineage are matters as much as they don’t want it to, but if born into it they’d embrace it.

      If they would stop showing Zimmermans photo in the orange jump suit and showing Tayvon as a twelve year old we might find out the real truth about this case. I’ll bet that seeing Zimmerman with his face all busted up this kids hommies would still be laughing instead of in Walgreens tearing the store apart. Or maybe not.

    I love the pics of Trayvon (Benjamin..middle name added by MSM because it sounds more, uh, well you know) Martin that are of him when he was 12, 13, or 14 years old, nothing recent, but they looked long and hard to find a picture of Zimmerman from 6 or 7 years ago in an orange corrections jumpsuit. That’s some fair and balanced reporting if i ever saw it! How do these people sleep at night knowing full well they are intentionally misrepresenting the narrative?

    Media Matters is absolutely NOT a factual, responsible news organization. They should NOT be treated as such. Personally, I dismiss them altogether.
