Does Misstated Marathon Claim Prove Paul Ryan Is Dishonest? (POLL)

Paul Ryan Says He Misstated Marathon Claim After Runners World Calls Him Out

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan now says he didn’t run a marathon in less than three hours as he recently claimed in a nationally broadcast interview.

Ryan admitted Saturday that he misspoke and unintentionally padded his finishing time by more than an hour. The VP hopeful issued a statement correcting the record following a report by Runner’s World Magazine that challenged Ryan’s claim. The magazine found evidence that Ryan has completed one marathon, in 1990, and finished in just over four hours, not three.

Appearing on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show last month, Ryan said he had run a “two hour and fifty-something” marathon. As the Associated Press points out, that’s a pace of less than 7 minutes per mile for the 26.2 mile course — an extremely speedy time for recreational runners. NPR provides this transcript of Ryan’s conversation with Hewitt.

H[ugh] H[ewitt]: Are you still running?

P[aul] R[yan]: Yeah, I hurt a disc in my back, so I don’t run marathons anymore. I just run ten miles or yes.

HH: But you did run marathons at some point?

PR: Yeah, but I can’t do it anymore, because my back is just not that great.

HH: I’ve just gotta ask, what’s your personal best?

PR: Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.

HH: Holy smokes. All right, now you go down to Miami University …

PR: I was fast when I was younger, yeah.”

“The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin — who ran Boston last year — reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three,” Ryan said in a statement. “If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight.”

Nearly every media outlet has since picked up the story and ran with it.

Further, some runners posting on the Runner‘s World website are fuming mad at Ryan’s claim, many of them posting their own personal records with date and time.

“Let’s see…..he lied repeatedly in his convention speech the other night, but to lie about a race time? Even more disgusting…….Maybe he ran a sub three the day Obama closed that plant in Wisconsin……pathetic,” one reader posted.

“Someone who blatantly lies about something that is so easily verifiable; a public figure who, of course, is going to get fact-checked, can only be one thing: pathological,” another person wrote.

Others though scoffed at the Runner’s World and other media outlets for spending so much time “fact-checking” a two decade old marathon time.

“Fun to see how much effort is put in to ”fact checking” a 20 year old marathon time. For someone who was a racer and turned into a runner, I think it could be easy to forget your race times,” someone wrote.

What do you think? Is the media overreacting to Ryan’s gaffe or does it prove that Ryan is dishonest? Take our poll:

As a former runner myself, it really is difficult sometimes to remember what the base times were for particular races, but you remember being just under some particular bench mark you’d set for yourself. So you might miss the main number and say you were just under it without intentionally lying. This is being blown WAY out of proportion.

Wow, really hard to be upset at Ryan over this one. What next, catch him “lying” about how big was the fish he caught on a trip with his family to the lake? For crying out loud. Didn’t President Hussein once tell us the “whopper” that he was born in Hawaii or something? How is Ryan’s marathon time news? Boy, the Democrats must be going INSANE trying to dig up dirt on the Romney-Ryan ticket. What hideous lie will they catch Ryan in next? Failing to report his real height on his driver’s license by an inch?

To all Ron Paul Supporters, i have been in conference calls and talking to several people about a possible third party run for Ron Paul. So far, it looks like it may be possible for Ron Paul to either take over the VP slot with Gary Johnson, or possibly Gary Johnson stepping back to VP and allowing Ron Paul to take over the Presidential candidate slot with the Libertarian Party. It seems that in order to do so, we need to show enough support. Go to this site and sign the petition, and pass this on to as many as you can: http://www.ronpaul2012.net/

Really, this marathon claim is the “dirt” they have on Paul Ryan? What next, are they going to report that 30 years ago he claimed to finish his vegetables, but actually fed them to the dog?

If these are the only types of faults they can find then he is one of the cleanest living and honest politicians of all time.

To me, this is a big endorsement for Paul Ryan.

Paul Ryan’s lie, misstatement, what have you,..pales in comparison to the LIE that is OBAMA! and is even SMALLER than the lie that is CONGRESS/SENATE/SCOTUS! In any event, it’s not like what we say, do or think have any bearing what so ever on the outcome of the electoral college’s choice for president. Remember kids, this national presidential election is nothing more than a feel good participation trophy moment for ALLEGED voters! The national election is a bad joke! and you are the punch line!
What the national election is, IS a cash bonanza for politicians! over a billion dollars has already been scooped up by the political puppets “obama/romney” AND there will be hundreds of millions of more dollars THROWN at them.. my question is WHY!?!! Since THE PEOPLE have ZERO say in who becomes the president, what exactly is the point of all this national election bs??? is money what it comes down to?? is that it?? I can find no other reason, it’s not like the electoral college has been hidden from us! It’s just that so many of we the people are so entrenched into thinking that our vote matters! when in fact it has about as much meaning as a fart in a hurricane! IT DOESN’T MATTER!

      Excellent thought!
YES it does matter that Paul Ryan repeatedly stated that he ran under 3 hours. I know sports crazed people and they darn well know what they achieved in middle school, high school, college and beyond even when they are 50 years old. Do I personally care if he ran a marathon 20 or 30 years ago and ran it under 2 hours, under 3 hours, under 4 hours? No. However, the truth matters and the fact that he could continue to embellish upon his score without missing a beat — is troubling. It is not a ‘fib’ it is a lie. Let’s not give a pass simply because he is a Republican and folks thought he was smarter than Joe Biden.

Ryan thinks it is important to lie about a stupid marathon he completed years ago, what will he be willing to lie or distort for something that is truly important? Of course, the media hyped option to Ryan would be … Joe Biden. Not much for the public to select from out of the two main parties?

      Paul Ryan’ statement about a marathon is NOT a lie;

OBAMA SAID BILL AYERS, the Weather Underground, that blew up the Pentagon, killed people, is an unrepentant terrorist, wrote obama’s Dreams from my Father (admitted it on tape twice), had a meeting in his house, IS JUST A GUY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD – Now that’s a LIE

There is a BIG difference trying to recall something from 20 years ago and looking the American people in the eye and saying Bill Ayers is just a guy in the neighborhood.

Twenty-two years ago! Twenty-two-years ago, the guy runs a marathon. And he gets asked a question about running out of the blue and he answers it as best he can remember . . . and he’s off by a bit.

God help us all. The horrific Democrats lie to our faces — intentionally and deliberately — every single day of our lives. The Obama campaign tells us that Romney killed Soptic’s wife — when she died six years after the plant was closed, Soptic refused a buyout and the wife had her own health insurance from her own job.

Anderson Cooper has Wasserman Shultz on and when she finally couldn’t wiggle out from under his persistent questions about a lie told by the DNC, said, “Anderson, it doesn’t matter.” THE LIE DOESN’T MATTER.

But the media would like you to be in a hot lather about Paul Ryan forgetting what time he posted TWENTY-THREE YEARS AGO. It is absolutely unbelievable.

President Obama is the most accomplished and competent liar in the history of the country. He can lie without batting an eye. I am going to cut the deficit in half is a good example, he knew exactly what he was going to do to the deficit before he ever took office, but he sold it to the American people like a pro.

By now he knows his policies have failed, but he is an ideologue, he will continue to believe socialist policy is better than capitalist policy even after Europe collapses entirely from the pursuit of socialist ideology.

I am sure Romney and Ryan will occasionally lie as well, it seems that it is difficult for most politicians (other than Chris Chisty) to tell it like it really is. To me Ryan’s marathon lie is like a fisherman describing his biggest fish. I have heard a lot of fish stories in my life, none of them have added to the federal deficit, increased federal spending or caused unemployment. Of course the main stream media isn’t concerned with the plight of real Americans, they are only concerned about re-electing Obama and the destruction of this country. If there are no free countries left in this world, then who can point out the failures of socialism and show the world there is a better way.

Most people embellish on themselves, usually without even realizing it. The left will jump on just about anything to trash a Republican. I do not care about his speed in running, I just care about the speed in which the debt is brought down and the speed that the spending will be cut.
My biggest problem is voting for Romney after the blatant violations of freedom at the state level primary and caucuses. To take away the peoples voice from these important election events is more akin to socialized politics. Everyone here should be writing their representatives at the state a =nd federal levels to voice their disgust in this. If they do not repeal these rule changes, I believe Romney will lose. Do your part and help get these rule changes overturned.

That’s funny… They make him out to be a complete lier when he doesn’t accurately recollect something he did 20 years ago. I used to run in the military, for the longest time I was telling people who asked my best 2 mile time was in the high 10′s…later when going thru some old military docs digging for my DD214, I came across my records and in fact my best time was in the high 11′s. Then I remembered that to be correct…totally innocent mistake. This president is lying daily about who his real father is (his biological father is frank marshal Davis) and yet Ryans run time much like Mitts 1040′s is headline news and a huge scandal. The left is just wrong on all the issues they are childish and just plain dumb.

He voted for the bailouts, the stimulus, the Patriot Act, the NDAA and his budget that he introduced does nothing to keep us from going over the cliff! Now that the corrupt RNC has pushed Dr. Paul out of the picture, there is only one left that would do the right things for our country, Gary Johnson. I have been telling all of you that spew out your hatred of Ron Paul and accusing us Paul supporters of looking at him as though he is the messiah, that this is not all about Ron Paul, but about Liberty. The Liberty movement will continue, we will take the GOP by storm over the next decade and will infiltrate at all levels. The progressive era of the GOP will soon be over, you will thank us later. TO ANY PAUL SUPPORTER OUT THERE (STILL): I LOVE IT when i hear one of you say “I’m a Man of Principle“ and ”I could only vote for someone who shares my convictions”….here’s the answer to both:
A Man of any Principle in the US of A would want to protect the US of A and hopefully would have enough sense to know that never before, never, has the US of A been so infiltrated with the perfect storm of enemies: Islam and Communism. To the point that if an AMERICAN LOVING PATRIOT does NOT win this election, it’s all over. Without BECK/ TEA PARTY/9/12rs and yes PAULBOTS, Obama would have had us hog-tied in the summer of 2009 (with the health care bill written by the Anti-American Communists/Socialists over 10 years ago…just waiting for their chance)…. so “MEN OF PRINCIPLE.. .you have a choice: Give up your Country or Fight for it”…then IF YOU were unsuccessful in getting your guy elected, are you going to give the election to the Communist? You can rant and rave all you want to about the GOP, but you’ve never come up with alternative, paid the dues, been in the local elections through the State, to the Fed. A vote for ANYONE OTHER THAN ROMNEY is a vote for OBAMA. Now the second part: Some one who shares your Convictions? Sure, great. What good is that going to be when every liberty you’ve ever known is gone? Petition Romney/Ryan for time to present your views but support them. IF not it won’t matter . USA will be gone. Ask any old Communist.

No one tells the absolute truth all the time!!! We each have our own perspective which effects how we remember stuff, especially 20-year-old stuff!!!!

How important is this in the “Grand Scheme of Things?” If Paul routinely remembers things of consequence that simply do not ring true, perhaps we should be concerned. HOWEVER, if will take him literally years to catch up with the “If you like your health care, you can keep it”-In-Chief.

This POTHUS routinely tells his version of the truth on a daily basis. In fact, one has to wonder if he just doesn’t have the facts or whether he truly lives in another world of warped mirrors and clowns. I would imagine that it takes no conscious effort on his part al all to “make up” what he WISHES were true and speak it as the truth! “A lie told often enough becomes the truth,” and that quote, folks is from Lenin. I have come to believe that our POTHUS subscribes to this philosophy, and quite frankly wouldn’t know the truth if it bit in on his tush!

That being said, I don’t know about you but I have had enough “lying from the White House” to last me the rest of my life. It seems like the POTHUS opens his mouth, out come words, and the first thing I do is wonder if what he says could possibly be true. For that very reason the Democrats will seize upon EVERY opportunity to paint an ugly face on Romney/Ryan . . . remember this is a contest of wills, and the Dems have NOTHING to lose except the White House!

Barack Obama may not know it yet, but he will never be more than a footnote in the saga of history’s most open, most prosperous, and most successful experiment with freedom and liberty.
Obama may envision a legacy laden with accolades and accomplishment, but he will never be more than a demagogue — who was lying to a nation and himself when he thought he was bigger than the dream.

What does “WILLING” mean to a BS follower (BARRY SOTERO) who stated that he had never gone by another name for the Illinois bar. Willing for a progressive means that no matter the means, the process or number of lies that need to be told, must be told to attempt to convince one and all, that what they say is the truth! On the other hand “WILLING” for a Conservative means that they are able to accept that all humans are not perfect, and simple mistakes of 20 year old memories “WILL” happen. But when they do they will admit to the mistake, apologize and then move on with the promise to hopefully not make a silly “BOO BOO” again. So to sum it up a “Willing” progressive must lie to maintain all the lies of their agenda, but a Conservative is not lying when a simple misspoken statement is made, so there is nothing to cover for or perpetuation of the previous lies, which makes is so easy to just say OOPS! and sorry for the slip on an actual happening. For being honest is much easier that being dishonest, as there are no lies to keep remembering and organized in your brain so you know what you said and to who you said it to. So for the progressives it is pretty hard to remember 100 years of lies and erase all the failures in that time period. A conservative lives with truth, honor, respect and faith every day and to “WILLFULLY” decieve anyone on anything does not happen, but simple mistakes and to be “WILLING” to apologize comes easy. This explains what WILL

I once scored 4 touchdowns in a single game — or was it only three? Or am I confusing my accomplishments with those of Polk High legend Al Bundy? My cousin set school, county and league records on his way to a state basketball title and a D1 scholarship. The point being that those things which seemed to mean the world to a teenager a quarter century ago have virtually no consequence to a man with vast professional responsibilities and who is also responsible for raising 5 children in Obama’s disaster of an economy.

This honest mistake or lie is nothing. Where Ryan losing my trust is talking about natural law and our rights, but has voted consistently against them. Honest men do NOT do this. This is what the media should be focused on, not something silly/trivial like how fast he ran a marathon. Because they won’t report on the important stuff shows how trust worthy they are as well.

@JUSTANGRY I completely agree with you. You will not see any talk of Ryan’s record on here because it is completely indefensible to anyone who claims to be a fiscal conservative or a defender of liberty. It’s the same tactic as democrats, ignore the record and be brainwashed by the rhetoric. I truly believe these people would vote for Al Gore AND Nancy Pelosi if they put an R in front of their name and gave a speech with the rhetoric republicans want to here.As they say “anybody but Obama” and those two fit that qualification.

We never had capitalism for obama to “execute”. We have had mostly fascism for the past 100-120 years. Once in a while we have a glimmer of the free-market. Quickly, The Government smashes it with regulation and subsidies to create a monopoly.

Much ado about nothing – Gaybama said his election would lower the levels of the sea, would employ millions of Americans, finish the fence on our southern border, reduce our deficit, bring the masses together as one and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony (okay, he didn’t say anything about singing…)

The levels of the sea remain the same, millions are now unemployed, the fence isn’t even close to being finished, our deficit is out of control, he’s separated the wheat from the chaff, causing Democrats to abandon the DemonicRat Party to the Left, thus causing our people to be more politically divided – and he’s in charge?!?

Why are we even talking about Ryan, when Gaybama has yet to be vetted?!?

It is unfortunate that we are even hearing this controversy but it is Ryan’s own fault. When the interviewer asked his time he should have come up with a selfefacing quip. People that exercise where times are important (running, swimming, cycling) to show improvement know and remember the times they did in official sanctioned events….they just do…especially those people with extraordinary mathematical abilities like Ryan. For him to say he ran a marathon in a sub 3 hour time was a deliberate attempt to portray himself superior athletically…like a 180 lb guy who benches 270 lbs or can swim a 1 00 meter freestyle in under a minute as a 30 year old. Not world class records but stellar for us everyday mortals.

      @soybomb315_II,

EVEN if you give Obama the lack of articulate speech (that he was talking about building the ROADS), Obama’s STILL wrong…

First, if having a road in front of one’s business is THE REASON the business is successful, then EVERY business with a road should be successful (and, we KNOW they’re not) – so there HAS to be SOMETHING ELSE that accounts for the business’ success (right?)!

Second, GOVERNMENT doesn‘t have ONE DIME that it doesn’t TAKE from WE, THE TAXPAYERS – so GOVERNMENT DIDN’T build that road, EITHER! It was WE, THE PEOPLE! Also, in MANY communities (dare I say MOST), Government CONTRACTS with PRIVATE INDUSTRY to actually DO the work – so even THERE, Obama is WRONG (as are YOU)!

He wouldnt be the first person to overstate his atheliticism, but an hour overstated? thats a BIG overstatement. Its not like its a “rounding” error and he should know better. When you are running for office, you‘d better be accurate because unless you’re a democrat, you are sure to be double and triple checked. There is nothing at all shabby about a four hour Marathon. The guy is probably in terrific shape, but claiming to be that fast is sure to raise an eyebrow and the guy is supposed to be good with numbers. Maybe it was the shorter Marathon, in wich case, he’d better get back on a treadmill. If this is the worst they have on him, maybe he should challenge Obama to a Marathon. Obama has never worked three hours fifty something in his life at anything. Smoke breaks included.

It doesn’t matter what your recollection is about an event that happened over twenty years ago. The liberal media is desperate to find any dirt they can find on the Republican ticket because they have no fresh ideas. The Conservative Republicans should be attacking everyone of the ideas coming out of the Democratic camp and suggest a completely different road to recovery.True Unemployment is near an alltime high so the Dems suggest govt. jobs, the deficit is insane so they say tax the rich, good immigrants are trying to get into the country but the left caters to the illegals and now the war against traditional marriage The rhetoric is all socialistic garbage that will destroy the country.
