Media Reacts to Becks Book Tour

Glenn Beck’s 11-city book tour for “Being George Washington: The Indispensable Man, as You’ve Never Seen Him” drew long lines of enthusiastic supporters during a three-day swing last week.

Despite some unruly incidents, local media coverage of the tour described large crowds eager to meet Beck and share a few moments with him.

Below, a wrap-up of some local media accounts of Beck’s appearances:

Harrisburg, Penn. — The Patriot-News:

Some 489 Glenn Beck fans waited in line at the Camp Hill Barnes & Noble bookstore up to nine hours Thursday to have the conservative firebrand sign $18.20 copies of his latest treatise, “Being George Washington: The Indispensable Man, As You’ve Never Seen Him.”

[...]

Mary Russek, 17, a senior at Harrisburg Academy next year, was still visibly moved moments after having her five books signed.

“I told Glenn that because of him I will make a difference,” Russek said with tears still welling up in her eyes. “He looked me in the eye, and I knew he believed me.”

Gisela McBride, an 85-year-old Carlisle resident who immigrated to the U.S. in 1957 after surviving Nazi Germany as a child, was eager to encourage Beck to continue pushing to save America.

“I’m very concerned about this country,” McBride said, a copy of her own book “Memoirs of a 1000-Year-Old Woman: Berlin 1925 to 1945” in tow. “No one listens to prophets, but they really have to if they want to save this country.”

York, Penn. — York Dispatch:

Tommy Leana waited more than 10 hours to meet Glenn Beck, who came to Books-A-Million Thursday for a book-signing event.

Leana was the first person in line to have the conservative talk radio host sign “Being George Washington: The Indispensable Man, as You’ve Never Seen Him.” The historical fiction book about America‘s first president and his war experiences is Beck’s latest work.

“I’m tearing up a little bit,” said Leana, 24, of Glen Rock. “I gave him a pack of Peanut M&Ms, his favorite candy. And I gave him a private letter.”

After all those hours in line, Leana’s book-signing moment with Beck lasted less than 30 seconds. Beck signed his book and shook Leana’s hand.

“It was a short time, but so worth it,” Leana said. “He said, ‘God bless you. Thank you for coming.’ He said he was sorry he was late.”

Panama City, Fla. — Panama City News Herald:

Kelly Ayers and Patrick Laflin were among the crowd of fans and said they came to see Beck because he was their hero. Ayers said he changed their lives.

“He informed us,” Ayers said. “Our generation is really concerned with politics and he changed that for us. It’s important to know and to take a stand.”

Chris Givens, Books-A-Million assistant general manager, said the book signing went well and by the time the signing was half over, more than 1,000 copies of Beck’s books had been sold.

“Everything has been really smooth and the people have been pretty cooperative. It looks like he has a good fan base here,” Givens said.

Tyler, Texas — KYXT-TV:

Glenn Beck made a stop in Tyler Saturday. A large number of people waited in line to see the conservative talk show host.

Beck was at Hastings on Broadway signing copies of his new book “Being George Washington.”

Beck fans said they didn’t mind waiting for hours to get their books signed.

“It‘s a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to shake my hero’s hand and tell him thanks for what he’s done for our country,” said Landon Lough.

“It’s a chance of a lifetime, I may never get this chance again. I live in Oklahoma and I don‘t think he’s coming there anytime soon so I came today,” said Esther Ross.

A few protesters showed up to the book signing prompting more police to show up. About 400 people attended the event.

I was one of the priviledged few in PA for this. I drove over two hours overnight to be there early the next day. It was so worth it to shake his hand, to look him in the eye. My son who atteneded 8/28 with me was there too. He signed my sons shirt recognizing it from his merchandise line. I told him I would be taking his George Washington challenge. I looked the man in the eyes and he returned the favor..direct contact, handshake..I don’t have words for how powerful this was.

My mom, my kids and I went to the Allentown book signing and it was so amazing. There had to be 700 people there… We all waited in line for two hours or more, but it went by so fast as we talked to the other people in line. Everyone was so friendly. (The really kind woman behind me even mailed pictures of my book signing to me.) Even the store personnel who did an excellent job at keeping things organized and moving were friendly as well as efficient.

With how limited his time was, I expected that he would just be feverishly signing books. I didn’t even expect him to be able to look up. It took me by complete surprise when he shook my hand, looked into my eyes and waited a moment for me to say something. I was so blown away that all I could muster was a sincere thank you from my husband and I, but I know that my face revealed the radiant admiration, love and appreciation that was in my heart. He even took the time to talk to my 7 year old who told him that he loved Liberty Tree House and my 4 year old who told him that she loved him. Glenn said, “Thank you,“ and ”God bless you” to each person and even stayed after he was scheduled to leave in order to make sure that he had signed every book.

For the rest of the day, my 4 year old kept saying that it was the best “Glenn Back Holiday!” (That’s how she pronounces Beck.) I had to agree. It was a precious honor to meet Glenn Beck.

I thank Mary Russek, her parents, and Glenn Beck

@STOPANDTHINK, I too was at the Allentown signing and was able to get my book signed. It took me over an hour and a half but the conversation with my line mates was worth it. As you said, the hand shake, the sincere look in the eye and “God Bless You” made the day!

I knew I needed to shake this man’s hand after the experience I had at 8/28.

God Bless America and Glenn Beck. And, I stand with Isreal!

York Dispatch?? How about you prove his writings about George Washington is FICTIONAL… This is what I hate about the left.. they make a remark like that without doing their homework, whereas Glenn did his to write the book. Glenn thank you for all you do.. when you left tv my husband and I talked about do away with tv because you were no longer on… we recorded your show every day so we could watch you.. you were the only one telling the truth.. so now in retirement we watch NetFlix movies and watch GBTV,, its the best thing we ever did, because tv is just another way to indoctrinate people.. We get all our news from the Blaze and some Fox, but even they are being taken over by the left.. God Bless you for all you do!

The reference was “historical fiction,” which is an accurate characterization of the work. In writing the book, Glenn took actual, historical events and added “fictional” or imagined dialogue to bring the scenes to life. That’s historical fiction. So, please, understand that it wasn’t a slam or criticism to call it what it is.

Glenn Beck has done some good things but I do not always agree with him. He just said on the radio that he “could not pull the lever for Newt Gingrich, but he could for Ron Paul!” I think Ron Paul could be a very dangerous man for this country if elected. When deciding on a candidate, I look at who is following him, and Ron Paul has many cultish, fringe followers. I don’t see how Beck can ignore this.

Why would you base your decision on whether or not to vote for someone because some of the, as you said, fringe supporters are too extreme for you? The is completely illogical. Look, America is heading for some seriously hard times soon. And, the only thing that is going to restore America, is to plant ourselves back into the foundation.

Ron Paul is willing to do the hard things, not the politically acceptable things, AND he has viable if not downright ingenious ways of implementing plans that will restore prosperity and REAL security for America.

Newt is the epitome of corruption. He may dance the right tune for awhile, he may even make things better for awhile, but in the end, it will only be for his own pride and satisfaction.

Ron Paul wants to restore liberty first. Without liberty you cannot have prosperity. Without prosperity, you cannot defend yourself. In otherwords:

THERE IS NO SECURITY WITHOUT PROSPERITY, THERE IS NO PROSPERITY WITHOUT LIBERTY, AND THOSE WHO WILL FORSAKE LIBERTY FOR SECURITY SHALL HAVE NEITHER

This is one of the most momentous elections in several generations, if not the defining moment for America. Our people have been given a choice, do we validate the eternal truths of the founders, or do we discard their dreams to the dustbin of history forever.

The only lever I’d pull for Ron Paul, is the one that flushes him down the toilet of idiots presidencial candidates.

Right now, Mark Levin has spoken alomst exactly what I was thinking: Michele Bachmann (though her gay comments, which I heard the audio of — not just rumors, are still disturbing), and possibly Rick Santorum, but it seems like Rick never says anything, like he’s shutting his mouth and not letting us know what he realy thinks.

For a few weeks there I thought it would come down to Romney and Cain, and while “999” is a disaster I was thrilled to have somebody that I could vote for that was NOT Romney. I WILL NOT BE THRILLED to pull the lever for Newt against Romney.

Ok! lets say all we got is either rommney or newt, as far as it goes we all know neither Michele or rick will even get close to being the nominee, or unless a miracle happens, we have to pick the best canidate we can, and all this bashing of either canidate gets us any closer to cleaning out the white house and the congress either, and ron paul has some great Ideas, but if he‘s elected which isn’t likley, just who is right, I may agree with Glenn on somethings, but the perfect candidate isn’t avaiable till judment day, so in my opinion whom ever it is, we have to make sure the Obama is kicked out even if it’s the dog catcher, none are perfect, but we have to make sure we pick the best one to kick the bumbs out, what choice do we have, the miracle isn’t happening as of yet

I suggest you listen to Dr. Tom Woods youtube presentation on the Christian arguement for Ron Paul. Or, perhaps you call Constitutional Conservatives, Christians, Independents and disenfranchised blue dog Democrats who voted for Obama in 2008 cultish?

God I love that guy! He has been instrumental and ‘indispensable’. :) We all have a huge debt to Glenn Beck. He may be demonized by the dark forces which now be, but he will be more than vindicated in the near future and actually has been already to a great extent if you’re objective and paying attention. Everything he has said is the truth or is coming true- Just like Rush Limbaugh.

I actually feel sorry for Progressive Liberals and their brainwashed masses of lost minions, some of whom are on these boards as severely misguided Trolls. I actually do feel for them despite all of the ill intent and ill will they show us. You can see how they are only hurting themselves and stiffening our spines in the process as they wallow in lies, deception and the worst side of human nature. Time is on our side. They are going to fare very badly in the future they are helping to bring about. The ‘real’ America will arise again from the ashes of insanity, division, hatred and back breaking debt. Hardship and rediscovered wisdom will bring us back to Constitutionally limited government and morally governed lives once again- just like the 30s did for the “Greatest Generation”. All thanks to the infinite and one living God. Amen

Yeah WILSONPD, I hate to pile on the little scupper too. He/she/it is struggling under some kind of severe mental/emotional disadvantage and it is sad. So much misinformation and hate channeled through one lil’ tyke. It’s gotta be painful. But you know, when ol‘ Georgie Soros is cuttin’ your minimum wage check you just gotta crank out the crap whether it hurts or not. Doesn’t bother us too much of course. In fact it’s really very amusing- in a sad kinda way… :( So just for the pointless, meaninglessness of it all, he/she/it should be pitied.

But I think you’re right. There is ‘something’ in the air here in ‘this’ state… :) We here who are somehow immune to the Zombie virus are still suffering nonetheless. The meddling in and controlling of people’s lives is omnipresent and almost debilitating here. Gotta have ‘something’ for all of those masses of worthless public servants to do, you know! Of course the Zombies all love it. They can’t think for themselves so being controlled by the state is the most natural thing in the world to them. When the dollar crashes there are millions of fops here who are going to just go catatonic and die. Well, it’ll be a little bit more dramatic than that but who wants to really think about it more than necessary? Then it will be the land of promise and opportunity once again… Yay! On the edge of my seat (boxes of food rations and ammo) with anticipation… :)

Well I just started reading the book and love it (very slow reader!). So far it seems to paint a picture of what one humble but confident man can do when he puts aside his own ambitions and desires and, with full faith in “Providence”, does what he is called to do. In other words, Washington “picked up his cross daily and followed His Lord” even when it seemed totally illogical and insane to everyone else including himself….sounds like Beck a few months back.

Not surprising. These are small town newspapers not Min-stream behemoths like the NY Times or Washington Post. These papers still think their job is to accurately report what happens. They have no need to set the agenda or tell people what their opinion should be.

Nobody holds a candle to Glen and his mission. When God speaks to him he listens and follows thru. Not many people have the courage this man does nor the faith in his fellow man.

Education is the key, and Mr. Beck is our national educator. If only our schools could clean up their political agendas and follow his lead.

    Thanks, Glenn.

I have seen Glenn twice on stage but nut up close. He is truly a hero to me and millions of others. He has changed my life and made me really examine what is going on in this crazy world. He has also inspired me to be prepared for the worst. Quite, simply I love Glenn Beck.
