Meet the Brainiac Homeless Man With a Ph.D. Who Can’t Find a Job

Times are tough. Perhaps the chilling economic realities can be best encapsulated by the tragic story of Dr. Maurice Johnson. Despite holding a doctorate in plasma physics from Dartmouth College and a masters in electrical engineering and acoustics from Purdue University, Johnson, 55, claims that he is homeless and without a job.
Though he has apparently declined part-time jobs in other cities due to financial and travel constraints, this overqualified man has allegedly been without employment since last November. Currently, he resides in a homeless shelter, describing his current situation as “just simply bad luck.” In terms of his shelter experience, he says it is one he hopes to never have to repeat in his life. Below, watch him describe what he has gone through in a YouTube interview:
Time’s NewsFeed summarizes:
Johnson spent all of his savings and sold all of his earthly belongings, including his car, to prevent foreclosure on his parents’ house in Cleveland, Ohio so that his mother with Alzheimer‘s wouldn’t have to move.
“They paid my way through school,” Johnson said. “If it’s going to take ten years, I’m going to make their final years safe and comfortable.” He then moved to Boston expecting to take a job he had been offered, but found out when he got there that it had been given away.
But, Johnson isn’t giving up. He’s been sending his resume out and he is hopeful that he will be able to get into either education or the sciences. When it comes to the challenges he’s faced, though, he seems to believe that his race has caused him difficulties. Additionally, he blames the dry spell in employment on the fact that he is overqualified (after all, those degrees are pretty impressive). Below, see a screen shot from his LinkedIn profile, which is also awe-inspiring:

The Daily What appropriately writes:
Maurice Johnson…challenges the popular perception of homeless people by being an unemployed aerospace engineer with two Master’s degrees.
A symptom of our times? Possibly. But, it is worth noting that, though the video is gaining sympathy for Johnson (and it is quite possible that sympathy is warranted), the details have not necessarily been substantiated. Jumping to conclusions, as some outlets have done, before verifying is probably not the best way forward.
But, taking the story for what it is — especially if the details check out — one can certainly surmise that we’re living with some difficult economic realities.

A PhD in physics qualifies you to teach any undergrad course in physics and math, and most in engineering. And he’s African American, virtually quadrupling his chances……It would take me exactly 1 day to get a job will those qualifications. With an online college, he could teach from a public library……again, BSBSBS!

I’m a registered civil engineer, and have been out of work for 10-months. Army Vet w/ Kuwait Liberation Medal, carry Class A CDL (truck driver license). Tried to go to general labor route, truck driver, handy man, etc. after 4-months, but was over-qualified and nobody wanted to hire. 1-year senior management experience is under-qualified for management position. Family ties and spouse job make it near impossible to relocate for work.
I’m not as old as Dr. Johnson, but I don’t do social networking, and only have 22 connections on LinkedIn. Stereotypical science/math/engineer types aren’t social butterflies. Judge not, lest yea be judged – but prayers are always welcome.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 1:37pmMy thoughts exactly. I finished my M.A. way back when I couldn’t find a job in my field so I worked for $3.35 an hour to pay the bills. I figured if I had to do minimum wage, I would only take jobs that where I could learn something that would improve my skills. I learned to be an accountant, editor/proofreader, I painted a lot of houses and cleaned a lot of toilets before things started to look up. But I never had to declare bankruptcy and always had my house to live in.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 2:09pmI’m sorry, but I can’t take this seriously.
Why?
Because there are so many blacks under AA who are “given” entry to school; then “given” inflated grades under AA; then certification which is nothing more than a worthless piece of paper.
Then there are PC corporations who were earning so much money up til this economic crash they can waste money for salaries for a token black here and there. When hard times hit, the first to go are these AA hires.
I have no reason to believe this is anything other than the norm, especially since he describes his work as an expeditor of sorts, which means he shuffles paper work by him to someone else in a position that was created to employ a black, so Jesse Jackson won’t boycott the firm and cost them business for not hiring enough blacks.
Also, the entire world of academia is a farce anymore, and corporations are now being forced to come back to earth after years of unchecked prosperity. It’s time to cutback and trim all the fat.
The most affected will be AA awardees.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 3:04pmFast Food won’t hire over-qualified people. Businesses in general hire only the skill level required. This is because there is still training and costs of hiring someone, and over qualified people will leave as soon as a better job opens up.
How do I know this? Because as an independent contractor for Microsoft, I regularily find myself out of work, because of a 100-day required break-in-service. Local companies won’t touch me with a ten foot pole, because on day 101, Microsoft starts shoving big cash my way once again, and there is no way I am turning that opportunity down.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 8:04pmI overheard the previous Superintendent of Schools for our city say that someone qualified to teach physics could basically write their own check. However, I also happen to know that when someone has multiple degress, like PhDs, there is a differential that is included in a salary. So, it truly may be too expensive to hire him as a teacher. BUT that doesn‘t mean he wouldn’t be able to tutor. And he could do that by meeting his students at the local library.

We have a friend that we know and the person has a lot of experience in there field…but unfortunately people don’t want to hire this person. The older the people get and the more experience they have they are less likely to be able to find or keep a job. Businesses seem to want younger less experienced people. 1. Because they don’t have to pay as much to these ones starting out. and 2. They are younger. These seem to be the big ones that companies are doing. So no it is not BS.

When things began to thin out in the early summer of ‘08 I sent resumes out regularly. I also began in earnest to complete a book I had been sharing “live” online, as I crafted it (fun process!). In early ‘09 I self-published it, and sold nearly 2,000 copies worldwide by word of mouth.
I have a second book of short stories (father-son, man things) about ready for formatting ~ 3 more stories to go.
In my ‘other life’ I spent 14 years as a missionary/teacher and Hospice chaplain. Divorce changed all that. I spent nearly a year homeless, staying intermittently with friends as I searched for work. During this process of grieving, and refusing to give up, I decided to take stock. I looked at the basic skill sets, aptitudes and experiences I had garnered over the years… and put them to work in marketing, training and project management.
My first client was ******* Barrel. I helped them design their then-‘new’ website feature “THE NEIGHBORHOOD” and wrote feature stories for them for about 2 years.
It was the beginning of a very fun, good fit!
I get up every morning, a WINNER. And I search every day for that organization, company that’s looking to add another to their team.

Worked at a Dairy Queen, worked at a dry cleaners, sold vitamins & makeup, jewelry, etc. If people want a job, do like my mom and get off their duffs and go to work wherever any type job is available until you can manage better. She did this for years, but finally found a better paying job that allowed her to attend college evenings. Posted on August 11, 2011 at 11:40amI’d bet his phd was earned because of his race, not his knowledge, we have hundreds of them working here, they come in, are paid while they get a bs, paid while they are given a masters, paid while given a doctorate. When they finish, they know less than your average ged student.

Its also possible that he has some personality disorder that prevents him from getting through an interview. Consistently giving a really bad answer to a common interview question can keep you from getting a job for a very long time. I interview someone who was the only applicant for the position. He thought he was a shoe-in. When I asked what motivates him to do his best work, he answered “My Mom.”. Since his Mom didn’t work here to keep him motivated, I passed, and waited for another applicant. There could be lots of reasons why he isn’t getting a job that have nothing to do with is degrees, experience, or race for that matter.
