Meet ‘American Heritage Girls’ — A ‘Christ-Centered’ Alternative to the Girl Scouts

American Heritage Girls Serves as Alternative to Girl ScoutsLast week, the Blaze’s report about the Girl Scouts of the USA‘s “MEdia” book and its encouragement that young girls visit Media Matters to clear up “misinformation,” gained a great deal of attention. The story, though, wasn’t the first time in recent memory that the Girl Scouts have come under fire.

In October, we reported about the Girl Scouts of Colorado‘s decision to let a little boy into the organization’s fold. And, on a grander scale, there have been countless accusations of liberal bias waged against the group. Some have felt so passionate about the organization’s alleged leftist allegiances that they have launched alternative groups for families seeking more traditional scouting experiences.

Take, for instance, American Heritage Girls (AHG), which describes itself as, “a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.” AHG was founded back in 1995 in West Chester, Ohio, by a group of parents who were looking for a Christ-centered alternative to some of the increasingly-secular organizations that had been setup for young girls (i.e. the Girl Scouts).

In searching for a Judeo-Christian alternative, they simply decided to launch their own endeavor that, just 16 years after its founding, has grown into something more massive than they ever imagined.

“We are a Christ-center character development program for girls ages five to 18,” Patti Garibay, executive director of AHG, told the Blaze in an interview.

Garibay, one of the founding members, explained in detail what led her to work with other concerned parents to create the Christian non-profit. When I asked her what spawned the decision, she quipped, “Certainly not spare time.” The mother of four went on to explain that creating AHG was not something that she wanted to do, rather it was something she knew she had to do.

“I just thought that we were creating a little club for my third daughter. I had led my older girls through Girl Scouting,” she explains. “In 1993, when the Girl Scouts allowed for flexibility of the word ‘God,’ I began to have a moral dilemma.”

It was during this year that the Girl Scouts, having trouble attracting individuals who did not necessarily embrace a Judeo-Christian view of God, voted 1,560 to 375 to alter its pledge. While the Scout’s promise would retain its official wording, individuals were allowed to substitute “God” with words they deemed more fitting. While the original reference to a higher power was never definitively said to be Christian in nature, this change was a major milestone in many families’ decision to separate from the group.

Garibay explained that, prior to leaving, the Girl Scouts had become part of her personal ministry, but the organization’s new proclamation — one that no longer definitively defined God as a central figure in its pledge — caused her great pause. So, she and other concerned parents sat around the kitchen table and planned AHG.

“We started a little club,” she said. “Before we knew it, people from California were calling us.”

The group’s tagline — “faith, service and fun” — has apparently been very attractive to parents looking for a more Christ-fueled service opportunity for their children. What started around a kitchen table has grown into a massive non-profit that has 30 staff members and over 17,000 young girls in 44 states and four countries. While AHG is Christian in its curriculum and nature, girls of all faiths are invited to take part.

The group’s growth seems to be growing along with the more secularized nature of the Girl Scouts. AHG has expanded dramatically and, according to Garibay, membership is 50 percent ahead of where it was last year. “Over 90 percent of the people who come to us have left the Girl Scouts – we’re like the best kept secret,” she says.

Much like the Girl Scouts, AHG has badges (over 240 opportunities, in fact), uniforms, service projects and other related elements. In fact, service projects are required for the girls to advance. The group’s web site explains what an AHG troop might look like:

American Heritage Girls Serves as Alternative to Girl Scouts• meet during the day, in the evening or even on the weekends.  Most Troops meet during the school year but some meet year-round.
• meet once a week, every other week or twice a month.  Those details are determined by the Troop Leadership with input from the interested families.
• vary in size.  Some Troops have as few as 10-12 girls and some are as large as 150 girls.  The average number of girls per Troop is about 35-40.
• be chartered through a church, private school or other non-profit organization that abides by the AHG Statement of Faith.

The organization prides itself on a stellar relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, a group that is a separate entity from the Girl Scouts (but one that has retained many of its faith-based values). In fact, AHG and the Boy Scouts have been working together, due to their commonality, since 2009.

Garibay says that they share resources and that AHG helps the Boy Scouts by providing leads to appropriate families and by “re-explain[ing] what the Boy Scouts are all about.”

When it comes to drawing distinctions between AHG and Girl Scouts, Garibay was respectful, but didn’t hesitate to make the differences clear. “It’s basically a secular worldview versus a Biblical worldview,” she explained. After mentioning the Media Matters dilemma (this was prior to the Blaze’s report on the matter), she said, “I wish the Girl Scouts would be honest and open about what they really stand for.”

Fundraising, of course, is always a challenge for non-profits. AHG doesn’t rely on any government funding, as the group sees support come in from families and others who see the benefits of its work.

“The blessings we’re seeing are incredible,” Garibay says. “God had all those fruits in mind.” You can get information about AHG, learn how you can start a local troop or simply explore more about the organization.

    I was made aware of the leftward leanings of Girl Scouts a short time ago.
    As a former GS (in the 80′s) this saddens me. Now that I am aware of American Heritage Girls, my oldest daughter will be joinging upon the arrival of her 5th birthday this coming June. My youngest will also, the following year.

      Right there with ya sister. I’ve now done my homework, and explained this all to my 9 yr old daughter. She understands and can’t wait to start a new adventure.

      My wife has been a girl scout leader since my daughter was in 5th grade or so.
      She formed a troop with a couple of my daughters friends and their mothers.
      My daughter is now 15 and just received her silver award. The built sheds for the SPCA, get together donations for the children’s home.. Rake neighbors lawns in the fall.
      My wife is as is 4 of the 5 moms Republicans who believe in the right to life.
      They keep the meetings non-political and focus on doing good deeds for the community.
      Three of the five families all go to church every Sunday. One sometimes, one not so much.
      I think most of you are way off base on this one.

      Good for you. I’m glad to see there is an alternative out there. The Girl Scouts were beginning to change when I was a member in the 1970′s, and not in a good way. It was more evident in junior high and high school troops than for the very young.

      why is indoctrinating children one way wrong, while the other way is right. why not let them be kids. this is no better than atheist camp or god camp. it is wrong and the sheeple would be wise to see. someone else is is control, get a spine as well as a mind. teach them to teach themselves. indoctrination should be like sex, not until they are adults!

      @Cobrabill – People all have different experiences with different businesses. What is so great about America is that people are industrious and create other alternatives. They are not “off base”, because they had a different experience than you and would rather choose a different option.

      I personally am sickened by the “paid” leadership of both the boy scouts and girl scouts. I will never donate to friends of scouting or buy girl scout cookies. Lets just hope this new organization’s leadership maintains its values and it does not become a bunch of high paid ****** taking the parents money.

    This is a great group and everyone should support them – a great alternative to the Girl Scouts. They are linked now to the Boy Scouts who haven’t waivered in their beliefs and the AHG can use BSA facilities at BSA rates.

    Sadly the GSA has gone the way of many churches that have changed their beliefs to make the more politically correct. I have stopped buying cookies from GSA because of their liberal stances – it was no mistake that they put out the Media Matters reference – they just thought no one would notice.

      Their current enrollment is 3.5 million in the US alone and probably a similar amount in the rest of the world.

      So basically it is 205 times larger than the American Heritage Girls in the US alone.

      Only a communistic perhaps terrorist organizations would have the following pledge.

      To serve God and my country,
      To help people at all times,
      And to live by the Girl Scout Law

      Is it not enough to just clearly state that the American Heritage Girls are a christian separatist organization that discriminates against those of other beliefs and leave it at that.

      I just don’t like the direction the GSA is heading and can associate with whatever group I choose. Last time I checked that pesky Constitution I still had the right – or has your lord and savior Obama outlawed that also? I spend money where I want and with those I support.

      The funny thing about that oath you cited doesn’t require the girls to actually use the word God. The AHG and BSA require that in the oath. If you don‘t like it you don’t have to join. BSA is open to all faiths.

      So it’s really only about 135 times larger.

They clearly stated they allow any girls, regardless of faith in the organization and the GSA has eliminated the word GOD from its pledge and clearly backs the liberal media IE: Media matters, but you godless liberals won’t allow something as trivial as the truth get in your way…..In your case, you should consider the saying, it is better to let people think your stupid, than open your mouth and remove all doubt….which of course you just did….

      I don’t want to bust on the BSA. But it is not nearly as “reverent” as it needs to be. I have joined along with my son th Royal Rangers. http://royalrangers.com/. This is the largest activly Christian boys group I know of. The Blaze should do an article on the Royal Rangers and give boys a chance to learn to earn their Gold Medal of Achievement (Eagle Scout equivalent) which also requires the boy to read the entire Bible. The BSA doesn’t require that. How does the BSA expect to bring up “reverent” boys if they don’t even know God?

      the Scouts , both boys and girls were invaded by social engineering liberals in the mid 70s
      all they did was spoil it for all [spoilers] I quit the BSA when the BS started about accepting
      homosexual scout leaders as OK Not unlike what happened to the YMCA.

      There is also the scout alternative called “Christian Rangers” for boys and girls
      Bible based fun, clean living, outdoor adventures, moral absolutes start a chapter today

      Actually it is doing better than Girl Scouts in our area because the units need sponsoring organizations which are mainly churches. Churches have backed away from Girl Scouts because the Churches charter is to be a mission in the community – Girl Scouts don’t promote God like the Boy Scouts and AHG.

      @JRook, the big thing some people have a problem with is that GSA say you can substitute “God” with whatever or whomever you desire. (But you know this, right?) I‘m sure that’s fine for you and yours (no problem), but a lot of us disagree. Discriminatory? It’s a private organization. If you don’t like it, vote by joining or volunteering for GSA. Nobody is tying you to a chair and making you do otherwise.

      An organization ought to stand for something specific and well defined or it’s a big nothing-burger and what’s the point? Why isn’t it “people scouts of America,“ ”primate scouts,“ or ”nonspecific, gender neutral life form scouts?” We meet in substantially varying places and do vaguely defined things that make people feel a certain way. Actually, we wouldn’t want you to feel emotions in any way. We certainly wouldn’t want to offend anyone by having any ideals, beliefs, or goals oriented with anything, or nothing for that matter.

      It should be okay to be honest, to say what you believe, and let your yes be yes and your no be no.

      Now, are GSA “pinko,” or as you say, “subversive?” Nah, probably not, and I wouldn’t fault anyone for joining, but a lot of us have beliefs that we don’t like watered down. Yes, I know you disagree and that’s perfectly fine.

      rook: Girl Scout policy states that the word “God” may be interpreted depending on individual spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, “God” may be substituted with the word dictated by those beliefs

      AHG is open to all girls, k – 18 year of age, regardless of race or creed. Leaders and the charter location, ie a church, school, etc. must uphold their statement of faith found on the AHG website http://www.ahgonline.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=19322

      The Catholic church has many AHG Troops! AHG is a pro-life organization for sure!

      Thank you for including Catholics in with Christians! For some, its a hard concept. We home school, we’re Catholic and we belong to AHG (held at a Baptist Church, no less!). Catholic Home Schoolers make up a large % of AHG in Memphis (No Jokes about birth-control here, well ok, some families do have more than a dozen kids). We are very aware of the left-leanings of GSA and have really enjoyed AHG.

    I am involved in Boy scouts and a Sunday school teacher; but do you really need to be involved with these groups (BSA, GS, AHG) to be of merit. Just go out in the world and do good works. That is all that is asked of you to be a good Christian and an American.

      These groups show kids how to function in groups. Not to be so centered on themselves. “You can do anything” is a dangers mindset and leads kids to believe it’s all about them. Work as a team and find out where you fit in. Not everyone gets a trophy and no one makes it to the top alone. People must learn to work together or divided they will fall. :)

      Since the schools have not taught “Civics” in decades I do think we need these groups. They teach kids responsibility for themselves and others. The Girl Scouts have gotten so off base in this and gone progressive that I welcome a new organization .. going to see if there is one in my area and if I can help.

      other than that our children need to be protected from wolves in sheeps clothing…
      girl scouts likes—guys, abortion, the pill, the vacination for transmitted deisease…
      all that is not for my daughter…or anyone who cares about their children…

    what’s the big deal here??? nothing new, the Lutheran Church (Missori Synod) has had an alternate to GS/BS for years. the Rangers/rangeretts(was a ranger for 10 years). my father was a pastor and everytime my twin and i came home with BS litature he threw it away, and told us we were not allowed to join. we did everything the BS did including camping and the jamborees

      that falls to the pastor of the church to promote the programs offered by the church as it is church business. too bad too because your kids would have loved the program. one of the men who lead it was also handi with wood working, and spent many many hours carving our kerchief holders. every 2 weeks we had a new one. ones shaped like a totem pole, fish, eagels ect. 15 boys in our troop so think how many hours that took. he was a big influence on me as a boy. the 50th anniversary of the church my mother and i were invited down as vips(my father had already passed away) i got to see and talk to this man as an adult, and i thanked him for all the years of love and guidence. shorty after this he passed away but i was happy to see him the one last time.

      I grew up LCMS and never heard of the rangers. I went the boy scout way and got my eagle. It‘s a shame they didn’t let that info be heard by the others in the church. I might have joined. Although, where do the boy scouts really veer from a Biblical view? They don’t explicitly say “God, Jesus Christ…” however,

      The Scout Oath is, “On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my country, and to obey the scout law; To help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

      It seems like they have put a value on the moral / God following side of life.

      For me, the difference between AHG and the other alternatives to GSA lies in the actual program structure. While AHG is “Christ focused”, girls do not spend a large amount of time reading or memorizing scripture. The spiritual element is only a part (though considered of equal importance) of the program. The program is meant to offer the girls leadership and service opportunities while learning life skills in a safe environment. It is not like other offered programs where memorization of scripture is a key element.

      This is why, in my opinion, girls of all faiths would and should feel welcomed to an AHG troop meeting; we aren’t cramming Christianity down their throats or forcing it on them, we are earning badges and doing service projects, with leadership that is Christian.

      I am not necessarily interested in a program for my children to assist them with bible memory (though I am glad other programs exist for those who are), or even one that encourages my child to read the Bible all the way through. I really think those are great programs, but AHG is just a different sort of thing.

    This problem with the Girl Scouts has existed for many years. The Girl Scouts pair up with Planned Parenthood to promote sexuality in girlhood. Am not kidding. All these things have been happening while we were sleeping.

    As a father of four daughers I have always wanted the best. My wife and my oldest tried the GS in the 90s to last about 6 months. The council leaders had no interest in the girls. It was an organization for the advancement of themselves. A huge percentage of the Cookie profits went to council only to be spent on posh offices and feathering their own nests. The straw that broke the camel back was the open support and advocacy of homosexuality. They were attempting to impose these ideas on girls as young as 8 years old. The thieft of innocence is a crime.

      Sounds like the GS is like the unions. The people do all the work and the leaders get all the money. Seems the leaders of the GS are using the money in the same way as the unions are, progressive crap. The AHG needs to sell cookies and take away the progressive’s money source.

    I was an American Heritage Girls leader for a year after we gave up on Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Boys & Girls, but I didn’t like AHG, either. They were too darned exclusive. Jewish leaders and leaders from non-mainstream Christian denominations were NOT welcome in their little circle. I‘ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Boy Scouts know how to do it it right. They have always kept a belief in God as their basis, but never excluded any religion. There still isn’t a girls scouting organization that I like. But you know what? There is nothing that says you can’t form a troop of girls, buy the Boy Scout books and follow them, and then award the girls a badge from a generic badge company (there are lots of them). Girls just can’t be awarded the “official” Boy Scout badges and ranks. But, by golly, they can DO the same things!

      If you were a member of AHG you’d know their “vision” states “American Heritage Girls is the premier national character development organization for young women that embraces Christian values and encourages family involvement.” so why would they welcome Jewish leaders? You sound like a liberal whiner. Why can’t there just be an organization like this that serves the interests of Christians without someone complaining? Just get a life and move of for crying out loud. Be a Boyscout if you want. Gees!

      I’ve been an AHG leader since my daughter was in kindergarten. She is now 14. We make blankets for the Down Syndrome Association, help out at the Senior Center, have father/daughter dances, earn badges on topics such as our government, fishing, golfing, physical fitness, art… I don’t know the religious backgrounds of all of the girls in my unit, as it is not my business. I am there to help them become better young woman; to navigate the tubulent waters of adolescence; to lead them in service projects for our community…. When I signed up my daughter, I realistically thought she would quit within a year or two. She LOVES AHG. The older girls get together to camp, rock climb, go white water rafting… Yes, the older girls do discuss religion, but they do it with respect for each other’s beliefs.

    Southern Baptists have had this for years. Girls Auxiliary for girls (GA’s) and Royal Ambassadors (RA’s) for boys. The Assembly’s of God have Royal Rangers for Boys and Missionettes for Girls. Other Christian denominations have similar groups for their children. They mostly have a missionary emphasis. In the 60′s I was a cub scout AND a royal ambassador.

    We still have freedom of religion in this country don’t we? The way things are progressing, it might not be for long.

    Our daughter is member of American Heritage Grils troop in San Antonio, TX for past 6 years. Wife and I have been leaders during that time. Great organization where God is center of everything, including badges and camping. The only girls organization with which the Boys Scouts have signed memorandum of understanding and cooperation.
