Meet ‘General Butt Naked’ — the Cannibalistic African Warlord Turned Christian Evangelist

Don’t let the name fool you. General Butt Naked was one of the most brutal African warlords to hit “the streets.” His violent past is well-documented, as he traveled throughout Liberia in search of victims to kill and — eat. But after his years of torturous reign, the “general,” whose real name is Joshua Milton Blahyi, is seeking redemption.

Joshua Milton Blahyi Changes From African Warlord to Christian Evangelist

Following his ruthless antics during Liberia’s 14-year civil war (between 1989 and 2003, 250,000 people were killed and one million were displaced by the inter-tribal war), he has left his violent past behind and reinvented himself as a Christian evangelist. It was in 1996, seven years before the war ended, that Blahyi converted to Christianity and suspended his murderous rampage. Today, he is married and has three children.

Contrary to his former life as a black-magic performing high priest, Blahyi, 40, now travels across Liberia preaching, working to expose cannibalism and trying to escape his horrendously-tarnished past. His mission transcends merely sharing the gospel, as he is seeking out the individuals he once victimized to find earthly forgiveness.

Now, you’re probably wondering how he got his name — “General Butt Naked.” Blahyi was known to fight only with his AK-47 and a pair of leather shoes. He and his child army (yes, they were all children) are said to have murdered thousands during the nation’s brutal civil war.

According to Daily Mail, Blahyi’s rampage started when he committed a cannibalistic initiation sacrifice on a little girl when he was 11-years-old. This action was the first in what he claims amounts to a total of 20,000 murders (though his rivals dispute this number). Daily Mail continues:

His crimes included child sacrifice, cannibalism, the exploitation of child soldiers and trading blood diamonds for guns and cocaine, which he fed to boy soldiers as young as nine.  [...]

Having spent 14 years holding nightly conversations with the devil, he had a blinding vision of Christ who told him to end the killings and convert.

Joshua Milton Blahyi Changes From African Warlord to Christian Evangelist

A screen shot from the "Redemption of General Butt Naked" film

A new film entitled, ”The Redemption of General Butt Naked,” follows the former warlord, while showcasing his efforts to fix the lives he destroyed. The Economist has more about the film:

The Redemption of General Butt Naked follows Joshua Milton Blahyi – also known as General Butt Naked – a brutal African warlord who has renounced his violent past and reinvented himself as a Christian evangelist. Today, Blahyi travels the nation of Liberia as a preacher, seeking out those he once victimized in search of an uncertain forgiveness. Filmmakers Eric Strauss and Daniele Anastasion track his often troubling path up-close, finding both the genuine and disconcerting in Blahyi’s efforts, raising questions about the limits of faith and forgiveness in the absence of justice.

Watch this special PBS clip that provides footage from the film:

In a 2010 interview with the Daily Mail, Blahyi discussed forgiveness. “I believe the Bible strongly and it says God has forgiven me,” he explains. He even says he’d be willing to be tried and hanged for war crimes at The Hague, should his situation culminate with such an action.

While his spiritual life may be sound, his earthly existence is certainly in jeopardy. His wife and children live in Ghana, where they are in hiding, as his mission to find forgiveness among those he wronged forges on.

You can read more about his fascinating story here.

But you are right in your assessment of the NWO
.. I just spoke with a Marine last night who thinks that we need to be policing the world because he would walk across the street to help an old lady..I am sure that the military complex propagandises the military..He was an honorable man..but I don’t believe that our military men and women understand that the NWO that will be ushered in and in essence is causing them to throw their own and themselves “under the bus” The “World Summit” was just held.where in AGENDA 21 was discussed. They have big plans for us.. As I understand..the Global Warming Scam is going hot and heavy and they are looking to impose 100 new taxes upon us.. Some may think AGENDA 21 is a conspiracy theory..it is not..George H Bush signed it back in the 80‘s and Henry Kissinger was on Youtube I believe talking about it saying that they didn’t like talking about it because the American people weren’t going to like it. So we are in for the end times.. I am voting for a Constitutionalist for President…I do not trust any of the others.

@COOLCAT51 ” Vatican City is not a City but a country. It has is own ambassador in D.C.”
First I would like to address the Muslim people..they were murdering Jews from the beginning, that is why God ordered King Saul to take them out..but Saul fell short of obedience to God..then the Pope of that era wanted Jerusalem for the Vatican City and that is why he and the Augustinian Monks raised up Islam via Mohammad,,his wife and her cousin Waraquah.. This is highly refuted. …but just a few weeks ago the Vatican was trying to join all religions of the world together..and then just a 2 or 3 weeks ago..the spokeman for the Vatican was engaged with Bibi Netanyahu asking that the major holy sites in Jerusalem be turned over to the Vatican or there would not be peace in the Middle East….Now…what kind of power is that? This also lends credence to Rivera’s allegations about the role of the Vatican in the creation of Islam.
Vatican City is not a City but a country. It has is own ambassador in D.C.

@SGTB: your lack of understanding is appalling. Jesus died for our sins…He did not say that we would be free of justice though. If this man has accepted Christ for the horrid sins against mankind and has repented of his ways, then in the eyes of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, he is forgiven. Man has laws, and he may/should have to answer for his crimes just as you or I would if we committed a crime.

The General is just hiding behind god. He is like most high profile prachers in that they are doing it for personal gain. He turned evangelical while awaiting trial. Maybe he truely does feel remorse and is asking for forgiveness. True justice is blind to religion. He should pay the ultimate price for his crimes. I’m sure he will get what he deserves.

Having the penalty PAID for your SINS, and being guilty of a crime are TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS!

Jesus death on the cross paid the payment for the forgiveness of the sins of all man if we accept that gift. It does not change the sin, or does it in this world remove the sin, it removes it from God’s eyes and the pain of Eternal Punishment for that Sin(s). This man is still guilty in the eyes of human law and in the eyes of relatives and community members. Should he be put on trial, yes; should he be convicted if he is guilty, yes; will he have to pay payment on this earth for his deeds, probably, and God help him!

But, unlike mentioned so many times in this story, I do not believe he “reinvented himself as an evangelist”! I do believe that he is a new Christian and received forgiveness for his sins from God, as did I for my sins when I realized that I was a sinner. I’ve never killed anyone, I’ve never been a cannabal, I’ve never done anywhere close to what this man has done, but I AM A SINNER! And God says I will not stand in His presence in that state. I realize this, I asked for forgiveness and I celebrate any individual who comes to this understanding.

Again, Love the Sinner, NOT THE SIN!

Jesus died for all sins. If this man truly repented God know’s his heart, God make’s the call here not man. It‘s by God’s grace that we are saved not by the works we do. Every thing is about what Jesus did on the cross. Christian’s are preforming miracle not because they have the power, because of what Jesus did on the cross. It‘s not about what we do it’s about what Jesus did! God is the same yesterday today and for ever He doesn’t change, but he causes change. Merry Christmas, always remember Jesus is the reason for all the seasons, including this one. Happy blessed new year to all believers.

This reminds me of a Story in the Bible where a Certain King butchered Children, and adults, and God had had enough and was about to destroy him, then as God was about to pull the plug, the King bowed down and told God he knew not of God.

He asked forgivness, and not only did God let him live, knowing the King was truly sorry, he restored the King to power and gave him more.

Many don‘t realize God isn’t that concerned about this life, but the Life we will spend forever in. For what is 60-70 years here compared to Trillions of years? Hopefully by this man’s conversion, those he slain may have a place at the table of Christ. Praise to our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone

I’m not sure if you are referring to the king of Ninevah or not, but that is another great example of the grace of God. For those of you not familiar with the ancient city of Ninevah just read the book of Jonah. I know some of you don’t believe the story of Jonah being swallowed by a whale, but that plays such a small role in the book that it’s not something you should worry about if you are trying to get a better understanding of the character of God. You should also look up the society that existed at Ninevah. They were as evil as they come. They were murderers and did all sorts of evil things to children and to the people they conquered and they were very similar to this Gen Butt Naked actually.

Jonah, as a Jew, was sent by God to preach to these people so that they would repent. Jonah didn’t want to see them repent because they were the enemies of the Jewish people and he, like so many, wanted God to judge these people for the unspeakable things they had done. Finally, Jonah preached repentance to these people and they fell on their knees and came to God although Jonah’s heart was still hard toward them. Generations later, the city of Ninevah fell back into great sin and they were judged, but their forerunners found salvation. Also check out 2nd Peter 3:9.

If you find me calling for something bad to happen to someone who has done less then I indeed will be a hypocrite, but it is a little premature to assume this is going to happen in the future isn’t it?

And there is an important distinction to be made when talking about a redeemed soul in the eyes of a God and someone who still may need to be punished by civil authorities. We all have to bare responsibility for the things we do in an earthly context, but denouncing someone who repents to Christ is another matter. We are not to judge souls, only to judge actions. If this Gen Butt Naked is tried and killed then he will have no one to blame but himself. If a man ends up in Hell, likewise he has no one to blame but himself regardless of what sins he committed.

Demint you are correct some people say different punishments for different people. This is why you can’t have a one punishment for all; it has to be taken on a case by case basis. It does not take a Rocket Scientist to know this. Don‘t confuse this man’s turn to God as absolution from the crimes he has committed. Nobody, is absolving him from this. He should be tried for his crimes, but we are not the one in the country. We are commenting on his turn to God and the fact he stopped his wicked ways. Whether God forgives him when the time comes, that is up to God. We can make judgments, but we also risk to stand in judgment.

This is the problem that atheist and elitist like you have. They can’t separate issues from one another. They feel this was said for this person, so it should apply the same to this person; sorry life does not work this way and the sooner you recognize this, the happier you will be.

This story is very reminiscent of the Apostle Paul who lived his life as a persecutor and murderer of Christians before Christ appeared to him in a vision and he converted. The fact that he is willing to be tried and hung if others see fit speaks volumes. The power to change, especially so drastically, is not found in men. It is of God and of Him alone and I hope this man will become one of the greatest witnesses of our time.

For those concerned that this man won’t receive justice you have to be mindful that none of us deserve salvation. We all deserve the pits of Hell and it is only by Christ’s sacrifice that we can enter into His kingdom. Christ died for all men including the most evil among us. We all need His forgiveness regardless of what our particular sin may be, whether it is murder or simple deceit. The Bible makes it clear that if you break one of His commandments then you might as well have broken all of them. God is our Judge. Trust Him, not yourself.

I can only add this, that the Apostle Paul who wrote much of the New Testament also killed and tortured many before he was struck down by the Lord on the road to Damascus and thereafter became saved.

and that is exactly why I think Christianity and all religions are insane. Who kills a bunch of people and then says “its all good cause I talked to Jesus and now I realized I was in the wrong, so now Ill make people Christians? Paul wrote most of the New Testament. Who is to say that he did all of that cause he really found God? Did God tell you he was legit? Or do we just say that God wrote the bible. (totally not my point) Funny how tithing came from him in the New Testament and the way a church should be formed. Plus I dislike Paul and I dont know why they added him in the first place cause he contradicts Jesus. Regardless, I think there is a creator but I am sure as hell not a Christian. I hate religion…

I can see you have a serious problem with the line of thinking that says this man can be forgiven. I’m not trying to be combative or condescending in any way, but I would just like to ask you a couple of questions. Do you think this man can pay for what he has done by having his own life taken from him? Would that be justice?

My conversion was not because of my wisdom, brilliance or understanding. God calls who He calls, when He calls them. It is His choice to reveal Himself to us and we are hopeless and lost until He does.
      1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

and if Christ was not resurrected, Paul says we are to be pittied beyond all others…

      1 Corinthians 15:17
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

ShawnB, Even when we have a “mighty change of heart” and try to do right and fix what we did wrong to the best of our ability, we still live with the memories, true repentance comes with a tough price tag. We remember, and feel sickness in our souls and minds for what we did. We are our own toughest judge sometimes. His willingness to die if need be, I bet, is his willingess to be done with remembering and suffering inside for what he did. True conversion does that-puts our soul on the rack. We may have been forgiven-but its tougher to forgive ourselves.

I just want to add one thing, Paul never suggested that he was “saved” on the road to Damascus. Paul said that he wasn’t aware of anything against him but he did not therefore stand acquitted. Paul constantly spoke about how salvation is a lifelong persuit not something that happens in one instant the moment you accept Jesus Christ into your life. Paul constantly warned about falling away from Christ and falling back into sin. Paul warned that only Jesus can judge us and we should not judge ourselves. Assuming that you are “saved” simply because you acknowlege Jesus is not biblical. Even the demons acknowledge Jesus. Jesus said not everyone who says to me Lord Lord will enter the Kingdom of heaven but only those who DO the will of my Father. Jesus didn’t say those who acknowlege me He said those who DO the will of my Father. Following Jesus is more than merely acknowleging that you are a sinner and accepting that Jesus died for you. We have to FOLLOW Jesus, take up our cross daily and deny ourselves. God Bless

@SHAWNB The definition of mercy is not giving to us what we deserve. The definition of grace is giving to us something we do not deserve. You first need to understand God’s grace and His mercy to understand why this is exciting news. Should he be held accountable here on earth for his prior actions, yes, he should. Only God knows the man’s heart, but we can judge by his actions whether his regeneration is true and authentic. I recommend you spend some time reading the first 3 chapters of Romans to see the condintion of man’s heart. Then spend some time reading through the 4 Gospels to see how God’s plan of redemption came to fruition in Jesus the Christ. As someone else wrote, there is no sin (other than blasphemy of the Holy Spirit) that God will not forgive. I hope one day you come to know Jesus and receive God’s gift of redemption through His grace and mercy.

Wow Shawn, I wonder what you’re so angry at? I understand that you and many more cannot realize that a conversion such as this is really possible, and to some, such as you, who cry out for justice. The problem with that is that you cannot fathom eternity. You probably believe that when you die, that’s the end. We Christians believe in eternity. We believe that the end of this life on earth is only the beginning of our lives. Whatever this man did, God forgives him, you may not, that is your choice. As far as justice is concerned, that‘s God’s job, not us men.

What this monster has done to women, children and all his victims is the most evil and horrific thing someone can experience. For the victim and there families sake I hope some one brings down that as$ hole and kills him. He ate them and any human who killed to eat another human out of sheer joy should be killed. God will give him justice then some one out there needs to hurry up and arrange that meeting.

If you used common sense then we would see that this man needs to be locked up or killed preferably. Tell me do you believe in Prison and the justice system. What if you had a 5 year old daughter who was raped, and then this sick son of a bit4 cuts her up and starts eating her. A few years later he is preaching the gospel and is good, what would you want then? If i killed your family would you want Jesus? But what if I found Jesus? Could i be free after I sodomized your mother and children and then ate them. I bet then you would say “well that’s different” but common sense it seems to me you lost your common sense!

Forgiveness is a tough thing for people to understand…but how can you give forgiveness if you aren’t the one dead?

It maybe he found religion. In truth that is between him and God. It certainly helps that he is repentant…but like I said, there are two types of victims here…the dead and the dead’s family and friends. The family and friends can certainly forgive and therefore hold no malice…but how is he going to ask forgiveness from those he killed?

The one thing that many people get wrong with forgiveness…is justice still has to be served. The law still needs to be enforced. And if he be a preacher now, then let him preach behind prison walls until he dies. I am not holding malice toward him…it isn’t out of anger, rather its with respect for the law, for the people he killed, for those who he hurt.

There is absolutely nothing that can change a totally evil man into a good man, except the love of Jesus Christ. I believe this man’s testimony. His testimony is true with the proof being that he doesn’t love his old life even if it means dying. His actions are the test of if his faith is real or not. I’m confident God sees the same thing. This is a brother we can look to as an example. The light of Gods Spirit and Word dispells darkness. This is the kind of revival we need in America. One where we are not afraid to shout from the rooftops what or sins have been and how they destroy us. One where we plainly say what God has done for us through His Son Jesus….reguardless of the cost to us, knowing that we are in His loving hands even through the valley of persecution and death. We know death has no hold on us.

There is a satan, there are fallen angels, there are demons, and there is walking in darkness. This all manifests itself in wicked behaviour. The occult runs strong in black Africa and this includes even many of its democratically elected leaders because those who engage in it think it gives them power.
In some twisted way it might, but satan destroys people in the process including those who chose the occult.

A couple years ago I saw a BBC program that reported that black warlords that had guns, trucks other financial means, attacking schools, killing and eating the teachers. If the students did not ‘
participate in eating the teachers flesh, the students would also be killed. These warlords had dominion over lands that had rich diamond reserves that a British firm wanted to mine. This British firm actually set up a classroom to teach the black adults not to eat people. It was bizarre.

For all those who have the spirit of the anti-Christ/satan, who impede the good news of Jesus and never repent, see where it gets ya. Choose between judgement or deliverance.

What many people don’t understand about the teachings of the Bible is that they have the same hearts as this man. We are all the same inside. No matter how well you hide it, we are all equally ugly before God. But when we have confessed our wretchedness and trusted in the blood of Christ, God completely forgives and we are all equally precious to God. If this man has truly trusted in Christ, he is pure before God. Whether he pays for His crimes is up to his government, but his slate is wiped clean before god. If you have trouble understanding this, than perhaps you need to settle a few things with God.
