Meet the Beck-Inspired Woman Who Spent $2,500 Savings to Post ‘Stand With Israel’ Billboard

Inspired by Beck, Michigan Woman Uses Savings to Buy Stand with Israel Billboard

The "Stand with Israel" billboard Rita Tilley paid to place above I-75 in central Michigan.

A 65-year-old Michigan woman who said she was inspired by Glenn Beck’s upcoming Restoring Courage rally used her $2,500 savings to put up a large “Stand with Israel” billboard above a major interstate highway in the middle of farm country.

Rita Tilley of Bay City said she heard Beck’s call to his radio listeners, urging them to show their support for the Jewish state with lawn signs, T-shirts or any other way they could.

“I live in a condo so I can‘t put up yard signs and I don’t like wearing T-shirts, but I thought, ‘What can I do?’” she said. “It just came to my mind, it’s not something I would have ever thought about doing for another reason.”

Tilley, a Christian who has never been to Israel, said she started contacting billboard companies, and was undeterred even after one told her they didn’t want to be involved in a “political” message, saying they only did strict advertising. She declined to give the company’s name

“The thought wouldn’t leave me,” she said of putting up a billboard.

Finally, she found another company that gave her an affordable price.

“Glenn always talks about miracles and I believe in them too,” Tilley said. “I think God wanted the best for this particular awareness issue.”

Because the company required the sign have a sponsoring organization, Tilley turned to her local Tea Party, We the People of Mid-Michigan, an organization she volunteers for. Even though their name appears on the billboard, Tilley put up the funding for it and worked closely with the company to come up with the design.

“I told them exactly what I wanted and they put it to color,” she said.

The final product is a blue billboard with the words, “Stand with Israel our friend and ally” beside two crossed American and Israeli flags. It stands above Interstate 75 in the Saginaw-Bay City area.

The billboard, which went up August 1, will be on display until Sept. 30. Tilley said she wanted to have it up during Beck’s Israel rally and into September, when the Palestinians plan to petition the United Nations for statehood recognition.

“[Standing with Israel] is more important in the long run even than our economy,” Tilley said.

Tilley, who also volunteers for her church and the Salvation Army, said she’s been a Beck fan ever since a friend turned her on to him about two years ago. She doesn‘t own a computer and didn’t even have a TV until last year, which she bought one in order to watch his show.

Tilley said she has been particularly inspired by the last words of the Declaration of Independence, which Beck often quotes.

Reciting from memory, she said, “With a firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

“Unless you take them to heart and do something they mean nothing,” she said.

Unlike most people, the people of Israel help us without broadcasting it to earn some sort of points. A Jewish org. just bought new computers for all the students in Joplin Mo. so they could catch up in school after the tornado that destroyed their town. Besides that, if you spend your life doing only for those you you think will benefit you, you have more problems than you know.

Look at Isreal on the map and look at what they are surrounded by. I don’t blame them for spending dollars on defense. I also, do not begrudge any of my tax dollars that go towards supporting Israel. Some other countries, not so much.

and by the same token, if you stand by those who only want your money, you are a fool. ooh, computers! well, excuse me. seems like we’ve given them more than computers. as far as who they are surrounded by, whose sons and daughters do you think are going to die if those neighbors attack. ours. the thing is, when i do something nice for someone, i never expect thanks. but when someone does something nice for me, i make sure that i thank them. could they not do the same. isn’t that the neighborly thing to do. i live in the country with neighbors around me. i look out for them. they look out for me. but i don’t expect them to support me financially for it. i promise you, if i did, they’d have me working my tail off.i just think it’s time for them to kick in their fair share. jump into afghanistan.and iraq. that would be for their benefit too. go do what they can do in libya, or anywhere there is trouble. but my word, do something. they’re part of the world also, and they should start acting like it.

“without going into the religion thing” do you really think that you can come on this site to state your opinions and tell us which part of ours we should not go into? If we can listen to your opinion that you have so graciously bestowed upon us unenlightened ones, surely you can allow for the same.

i have o problem with the religion part of it. but i do think that and the financial part can be separated. can you not support them spiritually no matter what. does god demand that we give them billions of dollars a year? i don’t remember that part of scripture.all i’m saying is the israelis need to get off their duffs and contribute something to the world. jump in and help out. what could possibly be wrong with that. and what could be wrong with us saying we will support you spiritually but you’re going to have to make your own living. after all, if they are the chosen people of god, won’t the final outcome be the same, with or without us. i’m not saying abandon them. but i am saying start earning your keep. i think that is a trait that god would look favorably on.

I live in Israel, but was born in the USA, Texas in fact. I for one would like to see my country now, not depend on anyone for money, arms, weapons etc, but rather to put our faith in G-d. The Bible is full of stories with miracles when we the Jews should have lost, but didnt because of our faith. Hats off to this lady. I am a tax payer the way I was in the states, middle income, not poor not rich, but thank G-d for what I have. I know that people that support us are always blessed in many ways. And Israel does a lot for a lot of other countries, besides computers. We have the Weizman Institute which produces 80% of all the medicine in the world. We help with agriculture, computers, etc. We dont brag or announce this, because people hate us enough as it is. There are many other things we do, but for security reasons we just can not advertise them. Mr. Carry, you sound like an intelligent man. Do a diligent search for what Jews/Israelis have contributed to the world and the US. Look at who arrives first when there is a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake. You will be surprised to see the answers. We are now and forever the only free democratic ally in this region that the world has. If we go, as militant terrorists want, the world is next. If you study Hitler/Germany from 1929 and compare them to the current politics and speeches in the USA, you will freak out at the correlations. In fact, search just 1 of his speeches. G-d be merciful to all!

Who has helped America? Give me one country. Nobody. I stand with Israel because they are God’s people, just like you and I; second, they have never said, “I want to kill Americans”; third, if we asked them to help, guess what, they would. American taxpayers have funded every country in the world, even those who have publicly stated that they want to destroy us. So, who has defended us? All those countries that hate us, are the ones who get the majority of foreign aid, so give it a break HIGHCARRY. We have given weapons and money to our enemies, at the very least we should help our allies. How do you know what Israel has done for us, do you work in the foreign affairs office of the federal government? Has Israel ever threatened the U.S. with nuclear weapons? Don’t think so.

The Jews,Israel, gave us GOD’s Holy Bible and our Lord and Savior, JESUS CHRIST.Praise GOD. They gave us the cell phone working with a branch of Motorola, Most of the Windows NT and XP OS by Microsoft-Israel, Intel Pentium chip tech was designed in Israel, Internet voice-mail tech was developed in Israel, Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities in Israel, Four young Israelis dev the tech for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ in 1996, the Polio vaccine, the first PC antivirus software was dev in Israel in 1979 and Israel remains the world leader in antivirus software.
Israel dev the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill, used to detect cancer. Israel dev a new acne treatment, Clearlight device causes acne bacteria to self destruct with no damage to skin. I could go on and on but you can Google this for yourself and read the rest. While all that Israel has done is important for the here and now, the one that stands out above anything is our Lord and Savior, JESUS CHRIST, who was born through the linage of David.JESUS CHRIST is the only one that will last throughout eternity.Everything else is short lived and soon will be gone; but JESUS CHRIST.He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.He is coming back soon to get his Church, the true blood bought Church, the ones who believe in the Cross and him crucified, the ones who are watching, looking and Praying for his return.

HighCarry – What do you think would happen if Israel “jumped in and helped” in Iraq and Afghanistan? Honestly, I’m pretty sure we ask Israel to NOT help. We know that there is strong Anti-American sentiments in those countries and every mistake or civilian casualty adds to that.

But they also have a religious text which tells them to kill the Jews. Anti-Semitic hate is a festering boil in that area. Any mistake or civilian death by IDF would spark muslim nation-wide retaliation(s).

GOD IS SMILING, and HIS great heart is warmed by this precious woman and her selfless action. I am so proud of you and what you have done.

Those of you who still don’t get it, supporting ISRAEL is BIBLICAL. As CHRISTIANS, CHRIST-followers, we are blessed by supporting GOD’ chosen people, HIS chosen country. GOD doesn’t say in the BIBLE, “If Israel follows ME and does as I say always.” Nope! HE LOVES ISRAEL ABSOLUTELY UNCONDITIONALLY. As always, GOD gives us a choice: this time we can either bless and be blessed or curse and be cursed. Rita Tilley just got blessed in ways she may never know until we are all HOME with the GOD we love and serve.

By the way, GOD LOVES EACH ONE OF HIS KIDS UNCONDITIONALLY. HE loves us enough to want us to be obedient to HIM, to love HIM and to cherish a very special relationship with HIM. It is always up to us to say, “Yes” or “No”.

I’m so very grateful the Rita has said, “Y-E-S!”

Thank you, Rita Tilley! GOD BLESS AND PROTECT YOU IN JESUS’ PRECIOUS NAME, amen.

How do you know? Did you talk to God? How can Jews be the chosen ones and then you turn around and say God loves everyone the same? Why has Israel been off the map for the past 2,000 years if God loves that country so much? Why have the Arabs in the Middle East not suffered plague after plague since they want to destroy Israel? I don’t think Israel plays that big of a role in our lives. I don’t worship Jews since 90% of them are ultra liberals. Most of these progressive causes in the US have a Jew running it. I don’t dislike Israel, but I’m not some foaming at the mouth rabid supporter because I think they are some chosen people and God is smiling at me if I support Jews. That’s just plain silly.

Since I don‘t and I can’t, I agree totally with what kickagrandma said. The Bible is very clear; “Those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse her, will be cursed.” I, for one, would much rather be blessed by our Almighty God. Israel has stood with the USA in so many ways over the years, that it shouldn’t be difficult to find them by a little research. God loves you even when you don’t understand, or when you disagree. Let Beck go stand with Perry, and Romney, and Bachmann (but only because he thinks she’s hot), while he runs over Ron Paul with a bus. What a waste of money on a billboard for something so stupid. The best thing Beck ever said was “don’t take my word for it, research it yourself”… well we are researching it Glenn and thank you, for ignoring Ron Paul, and promoting the Repubican stooges. I’ll vote for Obama again before I vote for any of them.

I agree with Veggy on this one but I will not vote for Obama – I will vote for Ron Paul again. Beck is so two-faced when it comes to Ron Paul – Beck interviews him and says kind things to him then afterwards slags him. Beck is def going off the deep end with his twisted religious views of how we have to protect Israel because they are God’s chosen people. They are not God’s chosen people. Christians are God’s chosen people – not Israel.

Israel can take care of Israel….all we need to do is not undermine them in their effort to exist. In the mean time, we should be taking that same zeal at trying to protect and support them and turn that inward just a bit to protect and preserve our own country or there will be no one left to support Israel.

    I stand with Israel.

I’m not particularly religious. I just know right from wrong.

I was and have always been interested in WW2.

I remember the pictures of Jews kneeling by
the side of a mass grave, as Nazi’s walked
behind them and shot them in the back of the
    head…..and many more ugly things.

That evil crap must never happen again!

And all you evil bastads that want to wipe Israel out,
just remember, they have guns this time!

Because, RonPaulForPresident, Harry Camping claimed to be following God’s word, but what he said was not only not FROM the Biblical, it was actually in OPPOSITION to the Bible. On the other hand, Mrs. Tilly is following God’s word exactly. Big difference.

seriously… “[Standing with Israel] is more important in the long run even than our economy,” Tilley said…???? Isreal is more important that our economy. So we can spend our way into debt (thanks Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, etc) and ruin our poor and middle class but as long as we support Isreal its OK that we fail…..She is drinking to much Koolaid. I love Beck and I am a hard core conservative but seriously get over the Israel thing.

For someone that truly stands with Israel based upon scripture, standing with them WOULD be more important to that person than our economy simply because they believe that by standing with Israel we will be blessed… and in theory if we are blessed our problems will be taken care of, hence our economy wouldn’t be a worry because it would be healthy. That is what I would understand her comment to mean, not that Israel is more important than us or our problems.

Where in the Bible does it say, “if Israel falls the rest of the world will implode????” seriously Israel wasn’t even a country until 60 yrs ago and we got along just fine without them. Why do we as a nation care????? We have so many problems here, we should focus onthose and stop worrying about 3rd world countries.
Beck get back to politics and off the religion kick!!
Also, Israel can go away 100% and nothin bad will happen to us. Now the same can‘t be said about the reverse but we don’t depend on them for anything.

This is a great example of “doing” something…a question I hear a lot is, now that we know what is going on, what can I do? Pray, listen, and act. God will hear you, plant an idea like he did for Tilly, and will wait for you to act. It is hard to get still and listen in our world of busy-ness, but take the time out to stop and pray. listen, and ACT!! Blessings to all who are looking for a positive way to contribute!!

Maybe it‘s because God didn’t ask her to send it to Israel, he asked her to put up a billboard. I don’t know why he wanted that. It could be to wake up many Americans and get far more dollars to Israel than the original investment. God bless Ms. Tilley. For some reason this makes me think of the widows mite because she gave all that she had.
