Meet the Philadelphia-man who bought a rare early copy of the Declaration of Independence at a flea market for $100 fifteen years ago. The document is speculated to be worth over at least $8million.
A frame made from the timbers of Independence Hall?
One man’s junk, another nation’s treasure.

Report Post »however It was produced in 1876 (or near there) for the Centennial, the process that made the reprint came to the USA in the 1840′s

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 9:17pmPortion of the Oration at the 61st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4th, 1837.
By John Quincy Adams
The object of this Declaration was two-fold.
First, to proclaim the People of the thirteen United Colonies, one People, and in their name, and by their authority, to dissolve the political bands which had connected them with another People, that is, the People of Great Britain.
Secondly, to assume, in the name of this one People, of the thirteen United Colonies, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station, to which the Laws of Nature, and of Nature’s God, entitled them.
With regard to the first of these purposes, the Declaration alleges a decent respect to the opinions of mankind, as requiring that the one people, separating themselves from another, should declare the causes, which impel them to the separation. – The specification of these causes, and the conclusion resulting from them, constitute the whole paper. The Declaration was a manifesto, issued from a decent respect of the opinions of mankind, to justify the People of the North American Union, for their voluntary separation from the People of Great Britain, by alleging the causes which rendered this separation necessary.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 9:14pmIts not an original. The guy says its a copy made in the 1840′s. Sure its an old copy, and made by a process that made copies from one of the original signed declarations, that might give it some added value, but it still remains a copy 170 years later.
I would not pay much more than the $100 the guy paid for it 15 years ago. I certainly wouldn’t pay the $8 million (not that I have that much) he speculates it might be worth.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 9:00pmSometimes you can find treasure in the midst of the junk being sold; I will be skeptical about the fact of its authenticity until verified against the original and examination by experts in such matters. If it is a true time period duplicate of the Declaration, then more of the history of the land is saved.

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 9:00pm1> This does not “Belong to the Nation” — that idea is absurd… just because something is of historical value does not give a group of people ownership over it… If he wants to donate it, fine, if he wants to use it a toilet paper well IT IS HIS PROPERTY… This idea that we are allowed to take away a persons rights “for the good to the majority” is a progressive idea and should be opposed at all levels.
2> This is a Centennial Reprint. One of the ORIGINAL copies from 1776 sold in 2000 for 8 Million, I doubt a copy made 100 years later would be worth the same amount, but I could be wrong….. or maybe the Dunlap Original has just increased that much in value??
still this is a great find, and I hope it ends up somewhere, private or otherwise, to be preserved……

Posted on July 4, 2011 at 8:12pmIt belongs to the Nation, I would give it to a museum but many would not. I would also hope to receive compensation but if I did not I would still give it to the appropriate museum so that all could see. There is no way that I could properly take care of it and it would likely be stolen from me or someone like me that did not have adequate security for such a rare and amazing piece of history.
