Meet the Men Who Expose Fake Navy SEALs

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — As long as there have been Navy SEALs, there have been men pumping up their resumes or thumping their chests in bars with bogus claims of being one of the Navy’s elite warriors.
The latest crop includes a Pennsylvania minister who let his congregation believe he was a SEAL and repeated the lie to a newspaper, and there’s no sign of such bogus claims abating anytime soon, especially after a secretive team of Navy SEAL commandos killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
A retired Navy SEAL from Virginia who devotes much of his time to outing the phonies said he’s receiving 40 to 50 inquiries a day from people suspicious of claims by friends, neighbors or colleagues who say they’re SEALs. Their doubts are usually confirmed with just a few checks.
The Naval Special Warfare Command also receives a steady stream of inquiries about possible SEALs, the vast majority of which are debunked, said Lt. Cate Wallace, spokeswoman for the command in California.
And Larry Bailey, a retired SEAL from Chocowinity, N.C., estimates he and friends who are former SEALs have exposed 35,000 phonies through the years.
“There were about 500 SEALs that operated in Vietnam, and I’ve met all 20,000 of them,” Waterman joked.
Wannabes lie to get free beers, to get women into bed, to further their civilian careers or to get military benefits. But what really bugs retired SEAL Don Shipley is that they‘re stealing someone else’s valor – credit due to those who put themselves in harm’s way.
“The more outrageous a story is, in a lot of cases, the more it’s believed. These guys do a terrible amount of damage,” said Shipley, of Chesapeake, Va.
It’s easy to see why folks look up to the SEALs, trained to fight on sea, air and land, because they undergo some of the toughest military training in the world.
Out of each group of SEAL recruits, 70 percent fail to make it through a six-month training course that’s a test of mental and physical toughness, said Lt. Cate Wallace, spokeswoman for the Naval Special Warfare Command in California.
Those who become bona fide SEALs wear a gold trident. There are just 2,500 on active duty, many serving in the world’s most dangerous places.
What’s especially frustrating about people who have been exposed as frauds, Bailey said, is when they continue lying about their service.
Wallace said that those who are blatant in their deception or threaten the public safety are turned over to the U.S. attorney’s office for investigation.
In Pennsylvania, the Rev. Jim Moats from the Christian Bible Fellowship Church in Newville was called out by Shipley after he was quoted in The Patriot-News of Harrisburg talking about his life as a SEAL in Vietnam.
Later, he admitted he lied.
“It’s an ego-builder, and it’s just simply wrong,” Moats told the newspaper.
He didn’t return a call from The Associated Press.
Moats has plenty of company. These days, Bailey and several others are exposing phonies through a website, stolenvalor.com.
Steve Waterman, a retired Navy diver from South Thomaston, Maine, and a website participant, said it’s easy to ferret out the real deal from the phonies. Dead giveaways are loose tongues and bravado; SEALs are discreet, Waterman said.
Waterman, author of the book “Just a Sailor,” never had any desire to become a SEAL. “I watched them train. That was scary enough for me,” he said.
Shipley agreed that SEALs don’t talk about their exploits.
“It makes us uncomfortable,” he said. “We don’t like talking about it. But these (phonies), that’s what they crave. They like talking about cutting people’s throats.”
Last weekend, several dozen SEALs joined together as a Navy warship was christened at Maine’s Bath Iron Works in the name of Lt. Michael Murphy, a SEAL officer killed in Afghanistan.
Murphy scrambled into a clearing, exposing himself to a hail of Taliban gunfire in order to get a clear signal to call in reinforcements during a firefight on June 28, 2005. He was shot and later died along with two other members of his SEAL team and another 16 rescuers whose helicopter was shot down.
Nathanael “Lalo” Roberti, a former SEAL, was supposed to be on the helicopter that was shot down. He and seven others were ordered off because it was too heavy.
“I lost 11 of the best friends I’ve ever known, and some of the best men America has to offer,” said Roberti, who lives in San Diego.
“These guys are the tip of the spear.”

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 10:37amThanks to the few who are the gardians of the valor of those who have given their all. SEALs, Rangers, Marine Recon all those who have been selected or elected to submit themselves to the rigors of the training to earn these elite titles and dedicate their time in the military to fulfilling assignments that put them in harms way to the nth degree deserve to be the sole recipients of those honors. There was a judge who said lieing about military service wasn’t really a crime, when he was adjudicating charges against a wanna be Marine, my response to that Judge and to those who defend these thieves of valor, why then is it a crime to practice law without a licence or to represent yourself as a judge? The punishment for these wanna-be would be a two week stint in training with the branch they claim to have been part of.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 10:09amAnyone care to explain why the unemployment rate for Veterans is four times the national average? I’ll give you my opinion. Even though everyone talks about how great they are, or how they always get the job done, etc. The truth is, the majority of Company CEOs, their Human Resources personnel, their Foremen or anyone else that has a say-so in hiring, DON’T WANT former military. They especially don’t want highly decorated Combat Veterans. They see them as a threat to their own incompetence, or view them as “unstable”. So stop the phoney gushing over our Veterans, no one is doing a thing to help them. That is, unless they are crippled or maimed. Don’t the Vets that managed to get back unscathed deserve a big break as well!? I know some of you are business owners, do you have Vets working for you right now? Probably not.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 10:56amI blame the media and Hollywood for the idea of unstable men are equated to decorated milatary service. There are posers who say they served in the NAM and SEALS. There are many a great men who fought and were wounded and traumatized, they excepted thier lot and just lived on with it. I knew a few, they sat at my fathers table telling me thier stories when I was young, it was part of thier duty for this country, they didn’t whine about their experiencs. I can say these things because, I’am a navy Vet sub qualified with experiencs with old school UDT and Navy divers. My father was a combat decorated Vet; AIRBORNE he jumped in Korea and did 2 combat tours in Vietnam, had 2 bronze stars and a purple heart. His comments were there were too many Pu#*#@* involved with war and the leaders who played politics that caused a lot of young mens deaths. Godlbless those men in harms way, may God bless thier waiting families with abundance and let those unsung heroes return home safely..

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 11:04amTYR – Sadly, there are a lot of vets that couldn’t lace their boots without help. Anyone who expects special treatment because they did their patriotic duty doesn’t deserve any. The military teaches self-respect and honor, and the fools that avoid military service (for ANY reason other than medical) are often cowards and have little respect for themselves or others. Those who have honorably served make the best employees and most employers not only know it, they count on it. So get over it!

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 3:22pmI help a Vet every chance I get, I regularly donate to Wounded Warriors, I have paid for the groceries of military families at the grocery store in line ahead or behind me, (this was easier when I lived in San Diego County where they are everywhere) I donate to known military young families around the holidays to help make their holidays better. I paid twice as much as the advertised price for a purebred Lab puppy once I knew it was a young military family trying to make ends meat who was selling it! I have sent no less than 100 phone cards to military personnel overseas to make calls home! Oh and I know 4 real Seals and 2 Delta operators, they would not “out” posers nor give them the time of day, but they would and have risked their lives to give them a free country to be posers in!

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 10:01amIf you knew what Navy SEALS do, you probably wouldn’t want to be one. To any who embellish their service (or lack of it) it’s very easy for those who have served to spot the bulls–t. When you tell your stories and the listener just walks away, you can bet he knows you’re full of it.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 8:54amThis happens to all branches of the military, the SEALS and Special Forces probably the most because of their elite status and being the best of the best. Marines are also a common target, but like I said, it happens to all branches of the military. Then you have former military members who claim that they did much more then they actually did. I suppose I can half way understand why they do it, but the first thing you have to understand about them is that they have absolutely no honor. Once you come to understand that then the reason the do thing like that fall in place. In my opinion these are the type of people who once exposed should never be trusted again. I would have absolutely nothing to do with that minister who lied about being a SEAL nor for that matter the Senator from Connecticut who claimed to be a Viet Nam vet. In my world they rate just above felons.

Posted on May 11, 2011 at 10:18amAs a former member of the Air Force for 23 during the Viet Nam era and retiring two days before Sadam went into Kwait, I saw no action or fought any battles directly. I was in support functions in South Korea twice and in Thailand once. I didn‘t feel inadiquate in what I didn’t do, but was proud of the role I played. Many people need that lie to get some of the self-esteem back that was beaten out of them by the negitive recieption by the people upon our return from duty. Others just tend to exagerate the things they did so people will look up to them. Believe me when I say that these people only get short lived esteem because they know they don’t deserve it. Feel sad for them, Don’t belittle or pity them. People of real character don’t have to brag, and usually don’t. They know what they did and didn’t do and are comfortable with that with in themselves.

There’s a special place for people like that where they will all be together and they can lie to each other from now on!!
