Meet the Oakland Developer Who Used a Shotgun to ‘Discourage’ Occupy Rioters

Although some businesses have been targeted and vandalized by Occupy Oakland protesters, there is at least one businessman who refuses to be intimidated.
Phil Tagami is a well-known Oakland developer. Late Wednesday night, instead of going over paperwork or brokering deals, he was forced to defend a downtown building where he personally oversaw $50 million worth of renovations.
He also has an office there.
“We had people who attempted to break into our building,” the landmark Rotunda Building on Frank Ogawa Plaza outside City Hall, Tagami said. According to comments he made to the San Francisco Chronicle, Tagami grabbed a shotgun that he usually keeps at home, went down to the ground floor and “discouraged them.”
Although they didn’t get inside the building, vandals did scrawl graffiti on the outside walls during the post-midnight riot that broke out after Occupy Oakland’s daylong general strike, writes the Chronicle.
“I was standing there and they saw me there, and I lifted it – I didn’t point it – I just held it in my hands,” Tagami said. “And I just racked it, and they ran.”
The Rotunda Building wasn’t the only business targeted by the protesters.
“Graffiti was spray-painted on many buildings along Broadway from 14th to 16th streets. Masked vandals shattered windows, started fires and threw objects at police, including lit flares and powerful M-1000 firecrackers,” reports the Chronicle.
When the riots subsided, Oakland business owners started cleaning up the damage. Owners of Tully’s Coffee shop boarded up shattered windows. The owners of Genji, a Japanese restaurant in the City Hall plaza, spent their morning scrubbing graffiti from the facade of their business. Rite Aid and Walgreens drugstores were also tagged by protesters.
Rachel Konte, owner of Oakllectiv, said her designer clothing shop had its plate glass window smashed and hundreds of dollars of T-shirts stolen (despite the fact that, according to Konte, some protesters attempted to protect her store), writes the Chronicle.
The city estimates that it will cost up to $25,000 to replace broken windows at city buildings.
Of course, Mayor Jean Quan called the rioters “a small and isolated group.”
“It shouldn’t mar the overall impact of the demonstration and the fact that people in the 99 percent movement demonstrated peacefully and, for the most part, were productive and very peaceful,” Quan said.
Tagami wholeheartedly disagreed, saying that Occupy Oakland protest is “basically concealment and cover for anarchists who are doing this to our city.”
“We’re very concerned that a group of people can be allowed to do this type of destruction to our town and to our image without any repercussions,” Tagami said. “They need to be held accountable.” He rejected assertions that the anarchists were a small minority, saying, “No, you can’t have it both ways.”
Tagami added, “I support a peaceful protest. But it was a siege situation last night, and quite frankly, I’m glad we were here. But I never want to have to do that again.”
On a side note, guess what happened to at least one business, Men’s Wearhouse, that pledged its support for the “99%?”
It didn’t escape destruction either.
“Windows at the Men’s Wearhouse, which closed Wednesday and put up signs of support, were shattered,” reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Broken glass is shown at a Men's Warehouse building in downtown Oakland, Calif., Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 after a Occupy Wall Street protest earlier. Graffiti is covering a number of businesses in the immediate area around Frank Ogawa Plaza . . . Some windows also are broken, and debris is littering the street (Image: AP)

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 2:50pmThe same thing happened in the 60′s in the Watts riots. As entire streets of businesses went up in flames, Korean storekeepers stood in front of their little stores or up on the roofs above with 12 gauge shotguns or AKs and said, “No, not here”, and the rioters left them alone and went away. The Constitution guarantees us the right to protect ourselves, our families and our property against rioters and looters, and we will do so. Mr. Guy Fawkes, meet Mr. Double-Ought Buck.

WELL, your wrong about that, The KKK is now on the list of organizations supporting the OWS gangs
EVERY freaking thug wanna be criminal is going to get in on this action SOON. There will be no containment. Every LONE WOLF TERRORIST will now have a platform and a venue of deniability. Many of these groups have had arsenals of weapons and training facilities for many years and will soon try and take over a city and declare it occupied.
Some of you have been having nightmares and visions of what is to come. Others have a grounded wisdom and reason, with which, you know some of the eventual logical outcomes from these events. The ones I worry about are the trigger happy warriors. May you never want to take a life but only to protect life. I have seen death up close as a army medic and it will scar you forever, FOREVER! King riots of which I lived in North Long Beach, one block from Compton, so I pretty much lived in the middle of it, was a little Korean store owner that when the mass looters showed up to loot his store he ran out with a Glock in each hand and just started unloading!
Report Post »It worked, the looters move on. I don’t know how many looter he ended up shooting, I’m sure there was a few.
My neihbors who stood together for protection, white, black and hispanic, had a group come down our street looking for opportunity of whom to rob next, we stood outside armed to the teeth like the old west, and as they walked by they wouln’t even look at us. Then we started to taunting them, encouraging them to try to come pilage our homes. We told them out loud we would kill them on the spot if they tried. Huh…funny they had no interest in looting from us, and never came back,…gee I wonder why?

I wondered what intimidated them more, the shotgun or the fact that he was black?
Just saying, a white mob attacking a black man would have gone bad whether anarchist or not

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 2:51pmIf there is violence in the area fire departments are not allowed to go in until Police can get “Control’ of the area so that Fire Fighters lives are not in danger… There are laws on the books in just about every state and because of those laws Civilian lives are lost but fire fighters lives are saved.
I remember that people joined Fire Departments to go in and save lives and put their own at risk doing it. Now because of Arson fires in the ‘80s and ’90s where Fire Fighters died we now see the lack of ability to risk to save even one life. It is called Cost Benefit Analysis and it is being used to keep people from doing the really risky job of saving burning property.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 2:35pmThis is my fear also.
Why do we sit on our hands while a part of the protesters, any part – no matter how small, destroy public and private property?
Why do we let a group that probably really represents 1% of the US population (haven’t been able to quantify this yet) call themselves the “99%” and destroy in our name? I’m certainly not part of the 1% but I would rather live under the society the way it is than the way these people want it to be.
Big problem is that they either don‘t know what it is they want or don’t realize that if they doe “bring it all down, man” their lot in life will be a lot worse than it is now.
Read works by those who have lived under the great revolutions. It doesn’t turn out good for the average guy.

Good start. Take those lessons, also lessons on gun safety. Then immediately take lessons not on “shooting” in the technical way, but in defensive combat handgunning. It will save your life if you ever have to draw your firearm. I cannot recommend enough learning how to work a firearm in real combat, because if you think you’re going to have time to carefully aim and get a good sight picture, you‘ve either not been in real combat or you’re watching too much television, or most likely, both.
Once you have those down, practice at the range until you don’t even have to think about what to do, it just becomes macro level muscle memory. Hundreds and hundreds of rounds.
Oh, and get a .45ACP…because shooting twice is a waste of ammunition!

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 3:36pmShooting Advice:
Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not to protect you.
Never let someone or thing that threatens you get inside arm’s length and never say “I’ve got a gun”.
If you feel you need to use deadly force for heaven’s sake let the first sound they hear be the safety clicking off, and they shouldn’t have time to hear anything after that if you are doing your job.
The average response time of a 911 call is over 23 minutes… the response time of a .44 magnum is 1400 feet per second.
The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win – and cheat if necessary.
Don’t forget, incoming fire has the right of way.
Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. You may get killed with your own gun, but he’ll have to beat you to death with it, cause it’s going to be empty.
If you‘re not shooting’, you should be loading’. If you‘re not loading’, you should be moving’, if you‘re not moving’, someone’s going to cut your head off and put it on a stick.
Do something. It may be wrong, but do something.
Shoot what’s available, as long as it’s available, until something else becomes available.
If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That’s ridiculous. If you have a gun, what in the hell do you have to be paranoid for?
Don’t shoot fast, unless you also shoot good.
You have the rest of your life to solve your problems. How long you live depends on how well you do it.
You ca

Exactly right! I carry the Baretta PX4 Storm .45. here in Florida.
For my home, nothing beats the Mossberg 500 12g with the pistol grip and adjustable stock that holds another 5 shells.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 3:51pmIf your new to shooting and want it for home protection. I suggest a Remington 820 12 Ga Shot gun instead of a hand gun. It will give you superior fire power at low ranges than say a 9mm or .38 without accidentally killing your family or neighbor because you shot through 4 walls with your .44 mag. Its a point and squeeze weapon instead of a precision aiming weapon. For those who don’t have the time to dedicate to shooting regular. Because if you don‘t shoot regular you will loose your skill and that isn’t good when your in an emergency type situation. And as already mentioned cycling (racking/jacking) a pump action in a dark house will make most wood be perpetrators wet themselves.

Posted on November 4, 2011 at 5:04pmYou could consider the Saiga12, semi-automatic shotgun, rack it once, shoot 20 times with extended clip. No need to aim, just point it in the agressor’s general direction and pull the trigger until you hear “click”, replace the clip and repeat if necessary. When smoke settles call 911, unload said Saiga12 and put your hands up in the air when you see blue lights to avoid confusion in the part of the LEO’s.

Posted on November 5, 2011 at 12:14amSome posters are right, a shotgun is more strongly recommended. And a dog, shepherd, dobie, rottie… and most importantly… you SHOULD NOT train them to be mean… LOVE THEM, play with them, have them trust you but they also must be submissive to you WITHOUT AGGRESSION. You get the right one with the right disposition, you know the dog is just a big loving dummy but when a stranger shows and he/she barks, they’ll crap themselves.
Also I wish I can remember when and where I heard it but prisoners were asked, what is the scariest sound to you? They’re answer a pump shotgun having a shell loading into the chamber. When asked about hand guns or rifles they laughed and said, most people cant shoot straight or are too scared to… So shotgun? If the convicts are scared… there must be a good reason :D
