Meet the Politically-Active Billionaire Who‘s Being Dubbed ’George Soros Lite’

Are you ready to learn more about the man Business Insider dubs “George Soros lite?”
Nicolas Berggruen, a billionaire who roams around the globe, living out of five-star hotels, is working incessantly to change the way Western governments operate. Bloomberg’s Jeremy Kahn describes the roots of his nomadic existence:
…in 2000, Berggruen sold his houses, put his art collection in storage and gave away or sold most of his possessions, including his car. He says his decision to live a rootless existence wasn’t a means of dodging taxes; he says he pays them in the U.S.
Berggruen, who made his billions by growing a $250,000 trust fund that his father (a wealthy art connoisseur) gave him, is being compared to Soros because of some of his policy recommendations, his passion for politics and his urge for a more integrated Europe. Plus, the generous billionaire has devoted funds to support American Democrats — yet another fact that makes a comparison between him and Soros worth exploring.
The Wall Street Journal’s Stacy Meichtry reports that Berggruen grew up in Paris, but has German roots. He spent his teenage years writing “utopian” constitutions and “occasionally clashed with authority figures.”
Now, he buys debt-saddled companies, then turns them around to turn a profit. When it comes to his political work, he has already spent $100,000 to create the Nicolas Berggruen Institute. Here’s more on the group (emphasis mine):
The Nicolas Berggruen Institute is dedicated to exploring new ideas of good governance. The NBI is an independent, non-partisan think tank and consultancy engaged in the comparative study and design of systems of governance suited to the new and complex challenges of the 21st century.
Our efforts seek to integrate the new possibilities of the information age with the best practices of efficient, decisive and meritocratic administration in Asia with the democratic accountability of the West. The knowledge society both enables and requires intelligent community, intelligent democracy and intelligent governance.
And it seems like he’s poised to make a major impact. The Institute’s Council for the Future of Europe has former Spanish and German heads of state and economic figureheads like Joseph Stiglitz on board. Berggruen even has connections to pop culture elite like Paris Hilton and Leonardo DiCaprio. Kahn writes:
Now, Berggruen is moving even farther afield in a quest to save the West from sinking into chaos. He says the stock market swoons of 2011, the brinkmanship in Washington over the debt ceiling and the euro-zone debt debacle are symptoms of the same underlying problem. “What you really have is a deep, deep governance crisis in the West,” he says.
When it comes to centralization, Berggruen and his group believe that it‘s necessary to bring together Europe’s political systems — this includes centralizing financial policies. He advocates greater powers for the European Central Bank and the European Financial Stability Facility so that the debt of private banks can be restructured and the debt crisis can be more readily relieved.
But it’s not just Europe that Berggruen is concerned with. It was reported that he would give $20 million to the State of California to assist in restructuring its political system. Additionally, he previously donated $250,000 to oppose a 2010 measure that would have suspended California’s global warming law (Proposition 23). The measure was inevitably defeated.
Watch Berggruen discuss his work to impact the political system in California and the U.S.:
Here’s another report about his goals in California (from Fox Business):
In addition to his attempt to impact governance in the West and California, he’s also been known to fund the candidacies of U.S. senators (including New York’s Chuck Schumer) and President Barack Obama.
Considering his penchant for Democratic ideals, like Soros, Berggruen will be worth continued examination. However, it should be noted that he is including Republican Condoleeza Rice in his California plans — a fact that may comfort some who worry that his agenda will mirror the extremism often observed in Soros’ exploits.

I fear that the combination of the well-meaning do-gooders and their lack of historically valued learning is a disaster for our future. Our current president is a good example of this : a man concerned with “social justice ” but who lacks the necessary background and knowledge to create it . He becomes a managerial nightmare who possibly will create more economic and social injustice because of his insufficient knowledge and deficient advisors. Community organizer or billionaire political activist might do more good pursuing a hobby like golf rather than tinkering with our social structure where their knowledge deficiency is a serious handicap .

As a California business owner, I can tell you from first hand experience, that the state has gone from being the envy of the world to the laughing stock because of it’s dysfunctional political system that rewards every single special interest – thanks to never-ending ballot measures that get stuffed onto the ballot over and over until they somehow get passed.

Now, we have these monied and elite globalist, who are usually new citizens to America, and who have absolutely no experience or education in the ideas they profess, wishing to insert their brand of political ideology.
They are worse than entertainers and athletes, who get an audience based solely on their physical prowess or their ability to pretend to be someone or something else. I have had the interesting experience of knowing a couple of his fellow 1%ers–children who have inherited great wealth and therefore know it all. They are gracious, but never really listen. They are used to being surrounded by people who are waiting for crumbs and do nothing but build their egos. If Berggruen had any respect for our definition of freedom, he would be using his wealth and power to protect our Constitution, not deviate from it.

Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ireland…are all countries that cannot sustain themselves in the manner of a Germany or a France..heck France itself is having problems. What does Greece generate money with? Tourism, a little agriculture and some shipping…that’s it. Whereas Germany is a technology, R&D and manufacturing powerhouse with a strong financial footing. So Berggruen wants them all on the same footing? How? Wave his magic wand? We can see playing out right now what was predicted over a decade ago…a European Union cannot sustain itself because of the disparities between the member countries. Some simply cannot meet their responsibility. You have deep ethnic identies that cannot be assimilated. You have an open border policy that has spiked crime and financial burden on certain members as well as allowing an influx of muslim immigrants totally reliant on the government teat and having a lot of trouble integrating into European society. And Berggruen wants to perpetuate this?

Ethiopian Jews who have been practicing that religion for thousands of years before Europeans CONVERTED to Judaism are never spoken of, or brought to the spotlight.(there goes white Moses and Jesus) In fact, the US media has brainwashed us to believe that Ethiopia is a place where people are starving and helpless, when that is not the case.

3. Foreign entities and individuals are barred for any political contribution or the establishment, acquisition and/or investment, control or interest in any type of group, entity or firm that is political or politically social in its nature.
4. Lobbying groups are barred for US politics, they squelch the voice of people in a district and claim to be representing a group or interest, but since it is not all inclusive (not everyone may want to be represented by a lobbying group) – then lobbying should be barred.
5. Term limits – Congress specifically becomes corrupt the longer a congressman or senator stays in office and they spend more time bending to the will of those who will fund their re-elections then doing what it right for the people and states they are supposed to represent: 5 2-yr term limits (10 yrs) in Congress, 2 6-yr (12 yrs) in Senate… they are barred from switching between house/senate and can no longer serve in Congress after that.

That’s a good list, I wish we would implement something like that. If you don’t mind I would like to add one more point to it… 6) all candidates for public office are allowed to spend only XXX of their own personal or non-corporate donated finances on each election cycle.
I don’t know what would be a fair amount either – $250k? $1 million? I have several liberal family members who cry about leveling the playing field on campaign finance. What would level it more than wiping out all contributions from lobbyists/corporations and setting a cap on how much each candidate can spend on his/her election? (might also clean up the airwaves during campaign season – create more ‘bang for the buck’ ads so to speak)
Just a thought. :o)

Posted on October 30, 2011 at 4:11am@techengineer11 — Yes Virginia, even Hitler is believed to have Jewish ancestry based on DNA tests. Marx was a self-loathing Jew and made bigoted statements about Jews and “Negroids” all the time. Dawin’s Theory of evolution is racist towards blacks… if it’s from the German School of thought during that time… well you know. Why was Hitler such good friends with the Muslims? What is one of the top selling books in the Middle East? Mien Kampf.
I wonder where all these dictatorial leftist get these ideas?

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 9:13amMy last comment didn’t show up…..if it shows up, forgive me for saying this twice:
I always knew Soros seemed too old…
“However, it should be noted that he is including Republican Condoleeza Rice in his California plans — a fact that may comfort some who worry that his agenda will mirror the extremism often observed in Soros’ exploits.”
That sounds like he’s trying to win over “even the elect….if that were possible”…
Not throwing around accusations….just saying. lol

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 9:09amI really don’t get the uproar of the OWS crowd crying because “the rich corporations” are using their millions to jigger the system, but when rich leftists use their to do the same, it’s a great and wonderful day.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 10:20amExactly….they are hypocrites (and that is being polite).
The Liberals always like to throw the Koch brothers in the Republican’s face. (First off, I do not repect anyone who uses their wealth to manipulate others.) I would like to hear examples of how the Koch Brothers have orchestrated evil, like George Soros. Have the Koch Brothers taken down the governments of other countries to increase their bank accounts? (If the Koch Brothers do evil with their money, then I am against them as much as George Soros. I would like concrete examples of the evil that the Koch Brothers have orchestrated before I turn against them.). Being a Republican, Conservative, Liberal, Democrat and having extreme wealth does not make someone evil. What they do with their wealth can make them evil. George Soros IS evil as he has caused great harm to others by the mis- use of his wealth.
Tea Anyone?

In my honest opinion – if they gave points away for best comment on each article – this would win as the most level headed, rational and (consistent) comment on here I think. I like it, it’s not about money but how you use it. That’s good! :o)
