Meet the ‘Preppers’ — The Americans Stockpiling Food & Water for a Possible Collapse

Preppers Fear Calamity So They Stock Food, Weapons, Water & MoreThe world’s a scary place. Wars, famines, corrupt politicians, terrorism, imploding economies — the list goes on. There are plenty of issues worth fearing, which is why a subset of the nation is preparing for what they see as impending calamity.

These individuals, dubbed “preppers,” are stocking up on food, guns, water and other items that they may need should the economy erupt or a massive natural disaster strike. With so many possibilities for problematic occurrences, these individuals want to ensure that they can live beyond any tragically defining moments.

Most preppers are fearful of the prospects of no governmental structure — something that some see as a possibility amidst economic woes and political strife. Back in 2009, a Newsweek report described this phenomenon:

In the late 1990s, Y2K fears brought survivalism to the mainstream, only to usher it back out again when disaster didn’t strike. (Suddenly, unused survival gear began showing up in classifieds and on eBay.) A decade later, “preppers” are what you might call survivalism’s Third Wave: regular people with jobs and homes whose are increasingly fearful about the future…

Watch some preppers discuss their lifestyle, below:

Reuters published a report this weekend, highlighting some of the preppers out there who are stockpiling and awaiting what they see as the inevitable. To begin, there’s Patty Tegeler, a 57-year-old who lives in Virginia’s Appalachian Mountains.

“In an instant, anything can happen,” she said. “And I firmly believe that you have to be prepared.”

Tegeler’s home has essentially been prepared for whatever may come. She has a large generator, water tanks, portable heaters and enough freeze-dried food to lock herself inside and to keep nourished for two years.

Wondering how she secured these items? There’s an entire market that caters to these individuals (most vendors operate on the internet). These companies sell many of the items that Tegeler has in her own home, as they teach skills or sell the products needed to ensure individual and family survival pending disaster.

The Reuters article even mentions Glenn Beck:

Conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck seems to preach preppers’ message when he tells listeners: “It’s never too late to prepare for the end of the world as we know it.”

Additionally, it goes on to further explain the movement:

“With our current dependence on things from the electric grid to the Internet, things that people have absolutely no control over, there is a feeling that a collapse scenario can easily emerge, with a belief that the end is coming, and it is all out of the individual’s control,” [Cathy Gutierrez, an expert on end-times beliefs at Sweet Briar College in Virginia] told Reuters.

While many would dub survivalist behaviors as silly or a waste of time, preppers separate themselves from the likes of Harold Camping and other leaders who have set dates for what they promise to be apocalyptic conclusions to societal existence. Preppers like Tegeler claim that their items won‘t go to waste regardless of whether there’s a collapse or not. For these individuals it’s all about being ready for anything that could unfold.

And there’s plenty of media outlets for these individuals to consume, as they share tips and communicate with one another. Blogs like lawyer Michael T. Snider’s “The Economic Collapse” focus upon the themes surrounding the economy’s potential bust.

“Most people have a gut feeling that something has gone terribly wrong, but that doesn’t mean that they understand what is happening,” Snider said. “A lot of Americans sense that a massive economic storm is coming and they want to be prepared for it.”

Then there’s James Wesley Rawles, a former Army intelligence officer, who is behind the “Survival Blog,” an online outlet that preppers regularly read.

“We could see a cascade of higher interest rates, margin calls, stock market collapses, bank runs, currency revaluations, mass street protests, and riots,” he said in an interview with Reuters. “The worst-case end result would be a Third World War, mass inflation, currency collapses, and long term power grid failures.”

Preppers Fear Calamity So They Stock Food, Weapons, Water & More

A screen shot from the American Preppers Network

Tom Martin launched “American Prepper’s Network” back in 2009 — a daily blog and support network that attracts thousands of individuals each week. The most recent post on the site’s blog reads:

Man-made disasters come in many forms. The most obvious would be spills and contamination caused by deteriorating materials, poor driving, train derailments, pipeline maintenance (or lack thereof), infrastructure collapse, policies that lead to coastal erosion, policies that contribute to widespread forest fires, sub-standard building codes, etc. There are other potential disasters that can be even more far-reaching. These include, but not limited to, monetary policies, tax codes, currency issues, stock market crashes, credit down grades, recession/depression, inflation/hyper-inflation (alaWeimar republic) and devaluation of a currency. Venezuela, Japan and others have experienced these events.

The list of possibilities is long and growing, but again, the prudent man attempts to prepare. For his family and his continued well-being.

This is only a small lens into the prepper movement, but this is nothing new. Throughout history, subsets of American society have remained ready and prepared for whatever may come. While critics may dub it an over reaction, preppers feel they’re simply being prudent.

For a glimpse into some others who are “prepping” for the future, be sure to watch GBTV’s “Independence USA” — a reality show featuring a family trying to live off the grid.

Below, watch a clip that provides a glimpse into the show:

The big exception in the room with all the countries he mentioned was that they had the big bad powerful all knowing USA to come and help them with US citizen tax payer dollars. We flood these countries with medi, food and water whenever something bad happens. In our case, we will have no such help, what we will have is UN troops to set up camps here while they watch us eat each other. If you have not set aside extra stores in the most plentiful America, you are stupid. Your plainly stupid because you believe those stores get restocked by magic and all those selections will forever be available to you. If they will not be, you’ll be the person saying over and over again, why didn’t I take advantage of all the plentifully stocked stores to stock a little away for myself and my family for that just in case day. Unless you have a farm and can get in a crop, you stupid. Even if you do you better have a way to convert waste to fuel to run your tractors and other harvest equipment.

Yes, Joeseph was blessed by God to prepare for the famine years ahead and he listened as the Spirit of God spoke. And he acted on it. Most today are listening but not acting. Our country is on the edge and in every city, people are scared and unsure what to do. And at any moment, the power’s that be will create a situation that will cause them to take control and hold us indefanitely without charges or warrentless kick-downs of innocent citizens (you and me) for any reason. We know it’s at the door, and not yrs’ or months, maybe weeks. Multi-millions will be held or murdered for being just good Americans and loving our rights granted by God thru our Constitution,Dec’of Independence, and the Bill of Rights, The life liberty and the persuit of our desires as freemen will be scraped for total control by the dark powers working together around the World. Oba hussien was put in by the elites and is playing his part as a “citizen of the world” and doing all for his brother muslums but most for destruction of Israel and USA and bring in the One World Order/One World Religion. Chrislam for right now and then all religions as one. Can Islam ever accept Jews and Christians and infedals such as Russia? Iran/Persia hated them for not being Muslum along with all the countries that won’t bow to Islam. Until the time came to join together with mutual enemies and control of the oil and using Nuclear weapons as a threat but they will use them,Iran,as they wipe out Israel and USA,EU.

I like your Joseph analogy. We live in the richest country on the planet and have not had a REAL famine or national food shortage in LIVING memory. (We have had small ones in local areas but nothing national that I can think of.) We should all be “Joseph” and set a little extra aside each month so that if things do go bad (collapse or natural disaster) we will make it.
Did you guys know that the stores only have at MAX three days of stock at any given time? If something happens you won’t be able to run to the market to buy it.
I am glad this stuff is getting the attention it is because it would not take much to kill a lot of people and likewise it would not take much to SAVE a lot of people.
Just start with a few extra cans of soup or meat and set them aside each time you go to the store. Even Ramon noodles….they are cheep and keep forever, light weight and easy to make and can be safely eaten raw. Just think a “little extra to set aside” and you will be surprised how fast your food storage becomes a stock. You will then start thinking of other areas that you need like safe water and a “bug out bag” if there is an immediate need to bug out. I am so very glad this is getting attention because we are far to vulnerable.

At no time in history has so many valid threats converged at one time, with the greatest being economic armegedon, which, in itself, is the basis for large scale societal upheaval.

At no time in history has it been so readily apparent to the average person that this entire ecnomic structure is at such a dire tipping point, threatening to go over the edge.

Newsweek is a left wing radical rag that is a propagandist arm for every left wing cause coming down the pike, and I have no doubt this entire piece was for the purpose of ridiculing people who can see the valid threats brought about by this community organizer’s adminisatration, wanting to create the idea that anybody who thinks their boy is causing dire times is some kind of kook.

This is the age of deceit and Newsweek is one of the deceivers, and it is those like them who have helped bring about the dangerous situation we find ourselves in today.

I have no doubt that once critical mass finally comes upon us there will be many people who will be knocking at the door of the Newsweek propagandists wanting to sit down and have a fireside chat with them, as they will with many rabid, evil ideologues.

They would lose time waiting for things to improve, a two weeks or three maybe, until they run out and set themselves on a path of starvation. Many of us out here have key military training as well. Jungle ~ Mountain Warfare School ~ Sniper School ~ RECON ~ SEAL ~ Special Forces ~ Weapons & Tactics and the list goes on.

In addition, we are preparing for any event that may come to the best of our ability. That is nothing more than common sense. Many of us also live amongst several thousands of like-minded folks ~ Christians and Constitution-loving people that are not going to tolerate the insanity coming from the District of Corruption (D.C.) or the United Nations.

No one in their right mine would dare confront us because they know they would lose any engagement they would attempt. Moreover, the members of the National Guard units are our neighbors, friends, hunting buddies and many of us, myself included, used to be officers and NCO’s in the NG and the Army.

My suggestion to the Powers That Be (PTB) is to just leave us Americans alone and don’t force us to open up a can of “Whoop Ass.” We don’t want to go there but if they, the PTB, put us in a corner they will regret the day they did. Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.” The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.

I think he’s saying that because Joseph and the kingdom he oversaw prepared for the coming famine, he was able to help others. You might think of it as a case study in preparedness. If you don‘t think it’s all that applicable, I’m sure you could draw inspiration from myriad other sources. Just saying…

When Obama looses the election next November, every black city and town in America will be set on fire and armed blacks will begin moving into the white communities for revenge. All of the National Guard units are overseas and will not be available to keep order. The police will be ordered to disarm the white communities and to protect government buildings. By now you should know the plan.

My theory is: hope for the best but prepare for any eventuality. How can that possibly be a bad thing? I have also stocked up on ammo which I think will,be needed and quite possibly from our own government. We moved to 23 acres and are trying to be self sustaining as possible.

We would rather be prepared & never use, then to need and not have… ammo’s important.. food is too. “prepping” makes sense.
National Graphic is putting out an edition focusing on some “preppers”…
We don’t need fancy “stuff”… food stuffs on sale..eg, foods (canned, dried) your family eats on a daily basis.
We have been prepping for a few years now. you could walk in our house , look right at some of our food storage, and never know it…and we’re not going to tell you .
I think, hope the NE and CA burn to the ground before the roving gangs some of you are afraid of, get out where we are…My mother lived through the great depression, and has always put food away..enough for a small army acutally..for a couple of years.
She said there were no “roving gangs” of people trying to rob each other…however, we feel things have changed tremendously…people just don’t have th respect for each other, guns are cheap , so are lives
It’s coming…our great depression is going to be caused by Obama and his kind taking over and destroying our country.
He is not the first, he’s just the latest in our country to move forward with this “new world order”…1st time we heard that phrase was with George 1…
If trusting in God is the “only” preparation people have made….don’t come knocking on my door…As said, I’d rather have and not need….If there is a breakdown in government…we all know there will be trouble, so why not be prepared..?.

Guess what, I prepared for all contingencies ie; roving gangs? You think your not going to see raiders in YOUR area? Think again, and wake up man. You BETTER prepare and have a plan NOW. You need more then food and some ammo if your going to survive.

we have “prepped” for a few years…bug out etc. We don’t advertise.
It certainly does take more than food and ammo. We try to be very down to earth about it all.
So many of us think our government will be at our doorsteps to help us. However, in not believing this…we have done things…I just don’t believe we need to advertise

don’t worry about the gangs in CA getting to where you are…they will be the first ones dead…they will start fires and looting in their own communities first…those communities will either run, fight back, join in, or die… saw it happen during the Rodney King riots first hand and the OJ riots and every time the Lakers won a championship…hood rats are just that…RATS….they get killed first and easy…
those that make it past the first round of looting and fighting will band together and then take over a neighborhood but they will never THINK to venture beyond whatever border they make for themselves to find where all the people that prepared went…they will sit and wait and cry and whine…where is the guberment to save our criminal arses…

i love CA…might move back there after the collapse…you have mountains, beach, desert, and farmland all within an hour or two in any direction..clear out all the liberals and hippies and it would be a beautiful place to repopulate….

We have lost power during two hurricanes and it makes sense to be prepared for many kinds of disasters and not that hard to do. We lived several days quite comfortably after the last hurricane until the power was restored with our generator. We live in the country with our own well, so that helps. We have not gone into “full scale” preparedness but can at least survive a short time. Even the grocery stores were closed a week or more after the last hurricane. Better to prepare ahead of time.

This is just on the warnings of a hurricane. Batteries will be gone. If you have never been through even just a few days, much less a month without electricity.. you have no idea what is in store for you….none. I have canned goods for about 3 months… Still trying to put a hand well on my property. I can do without electricity, but can’t do without water.

BDWATCHER, a good thing to have is one of those 80-gallon plastic rainwater cisterns that come with a tight lid and a little spigot near the bottom. Fill it with tapwater from the hose, throw in a cupful of bleach to keep algae from growing in it, and you’ll have drinkable water that will keep forever. Just top it off once in a while as it evaporates.

Me too, but I’m fairly new. Every two weeks I buy 50 pounds of rice then vacuum pack it. My dad built a cabin in a small rural community. Taking everything up there. If the SHTF, I’ll be bugging out with my family. The inner cities and suburbs are going to be ruled by organized gangs. Most preppers who bug in to said communities will become targets.

Personally, I see it as only a matter of time. Pretty soon, our debt is going to be so large that other countries won’t lend us money. Then, one of two things will happen: The checks will stop, which will cause the collapse as the underclass will riot, or they will print money, inflation will soar, and the government checks won’t sustain people, then they will riot.

Buy silver so you have something of value on the other side.

I went through my recipe file and found all the recipes I could make with shelf stable goods (canned meats or even – if desperate – what I could kill for the meat) and put extra of those ingredients away. I bought Sam’s spices that I normally use (meaning in large containers), extra oil, honey, etc. The most important thing is that you have to be able to eat it. Just stocking up on rice and raw wheat won‘t do you any good if you don’t know how to incorporate it into your diet. Use recipes you’re already familiar with, especially if you have kids. I even started once in a while substituting canned chicken in my recipes that call for chicken to see if it was edible. discovered I don’t like canned corned beef, so it’s extra dog food now.

Storing food is just as important as stockpiling it, because you’ll probably have to deal with vermin like insects and rodents. One of the best ways to store dried foods is in five-gallon buckets with tight lids that are used and discarded by institutional food suppliers (NEVER use a bucket that has held chemicals or paint). You can get these buckets for free from schools, hospitals, nursing homes, jails and restaurants. Or you can just buy clean, empty five-gallon buckets with lids from the larger home improvement stores. There will come a time when they will be very valuable, indeed.

Stock up on food, try to ensure a water supply, iodine tablets are a must. My best advice to you would be to have an escape plan IF you have to leave. Head for the Applachian trail. A bicycle would be your best bet, something that can carry weight and has multiple gears. Throw the bike in the car, drive as far as you can and ditch the car.

Mind you this is all extreme worst case. You might be perfectly fine right where you are, people will be lawless at first but would soon band together. Try to help others but stand your ground. Trust in God. No matter what happens here, if you are His then you have eternal life.

      @ BostonDotty ,
Being ready for most any “Emergency Situation” is a step in the right direction . First Aid Classes , Food Storage , Fire Arms training , etc. are all useful skills that would make you valuable to any “Post Apocalytic” Community . (“Post Apocalytic” in jest… sort of )

What you can do if you live in an urban area is to seek out other preppers and like minded people . There are “Meetup” groups all around America and I’m sure in your area too . Having friends with land outside of any possible affected areas can work to your advantage . Work with what you have and can acquire , and work on an exit strategy for your city . Find the best way out of the city in the event of an emergency , usually not the major freeways . We watched the local news in Houston during Hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Ike . The footage of the freeways was un-real , literally people dying in accidents , pets released along the freeway to fend for themselves later dying . And just thousands of stranded cars out of fuel . Ridiculous . My family takes nice Sunday drives after Church , I have found several evacuation routes for our area should we ever need them .

Again , just do what you can now , and practice , now . During times of stress , fine motor skills go away and muscle memory takes over . In a fight or flight situation having practice in both areas (fight or flight) allows you to make decisions based on experience rather than fright .

Good Luck and God Bless .

I think its prudent to prepare for harder times. Supplies are useful in many cases. Weather disruptions, earthquakes, political unrest or economic problems. It could be handy if a family suffered a job loss and was able to dig into previously purchased freeze-dried food to supplement their food supply. Having just a couple of weeks worth of food and water could make a huge difference in an emergency.

The large urban areas will be the first to fall into total anarchy. Gangs or roving bands of people will forage and prey upon those unprepared to defend themselves. Most stores only carry about 3 days to a week supply of products on their shelves and are totally dependent upon regular deliveries to keep the shelves full. Most people don’t have 2 weeks worth of food in their pantries. The likelihood of large percentages of the urban population being murdered within a month is very high. The probability of police forces forming armed encampments to protect themselves and “invited guests” is quite high as there are not enough police to enforce curfews if things get out of control for real.

It’s going to become real interesting for pseudo preparedness geeks. Just to put it into perspective if you merely shoot your gun one time every minute that comes to 1440 rounds in a day. How much ammunition do you have or can you carry? The best defense is a strong offense. Staying in cities is NOT an option, you need a place to go away from large population centers.

A friend of mine said if you can last more than two weeks then you will outlive about 95 percent of the population that will die of starvation. Katrina proved him right. Most of those people that listened to the government went to the super dome and if help had not come most of them would have died.
If you can find a good community where people are in the habit of helping each other then you will probably do pretty well. Joplin MO comes to mind when I think of a community that will survive.

You sound well prepared ammo wise. The best advice I can give is pick a very small group of “friends” of like minds, They used to call this a militia, lol. Have a central meeting location, there will be safety in numbers. Other than your select few friends, tell no-one!

As far as a scope, I don’t think you are gonna need to reach out that far, you won’t be sniping, you will be mowing down thugs. With a good AR-15 (223) you can hit accurately at 200 plus yards with an iron sight. But I do have a Eotech red dot on my SIG 556. I like it, very accurate from any viewing angle. And if need be, I can remove it quickly and go back to my iron sight.

Good luck, and I pray you don’t need it…

. Elected representatives fail to do what we elect them to do, opening the door to uncontrollable population explosion, wildly erratic political policy, unpredictable stock markets, wildly rampant judicial system, movement away from founding fathers spirit of religion, and allowing the Constitution to be gutted.
Nature, survival of the fittest, whether man or beast and a society that understands the basic principles of the pursuit of happiness.

This is to be taken with great seriousness. There is a brewing storm that will most likely be unleashed through insidious methods. We have an administration of Chi-town politicians hell bent on completing the fundamental transformation of America.
All we need now is trouble in the straights of Hormuz to give the commie in chief a crises not to be wasted.

More likely, it’s back to the late 19th early 20th century days, which when you think about it, weren’t so bad. Though I do prefer the conveniences of the modern age, of course.

If things “collapse” it won’t be for that long, and we will be surrounded by a plethora of easily reverse engineered technology (radios and transmitters, for example, and home made batteries), solar panels are everywhere (not necessarily on homes, but they’re legion in other places/devices). Steam power is a known quantity, and last check, books don’t disappear when electric goes out, so we can easily rebuild on previous knowledge. Throw in the hobbyists who do thingsl ike steam engines, leather crafting, sewing, canning, woodworking, etc. and I suspect that a “collapse” will not be as bad as we think, long term.

That said, short term it will suck, hard, so it’s always best to be ready for a couple of months of nastiness, minimum.

nope, Im not doing anything to prepare. Nothing bad is going to happen so there is no need to store food, know how to handle various situations or own evil guns. ;)

Nothing wrong with being prepared but “preppers” need to look past the short term. The best asset you can have is faith in God. He will provide. Note that I am NOT saying we should not be prepared, but no matter how careful you think you were, when the time comes you will find your preparations were woefully inadequate.

To further my post, in addition to stockpiling the more important factor is gaining knowledge on surviiving off the grid. Can you live more than a day without electric? Can you grow your food? Where are you going to hunt when everyone is competing for the same game? Can you distill water? Can food? Can you go back to an agrarian lifestyle?

Think longterm, you will have to start over.

Kinda-ish agree with you. Though the notion that game will disappear due to overhunting seems a bit out of place in the modern age. If this were 1955 I’d agree, as most men then still hunted, but today, can you imagine Jimmy Emoboy even being able how to figure out a bow or firearm, let alone posess the skills required to bag a deer, or even a squirrel, before he starves to death? Or an urban gangbanger, thinking he can walk into the woods with his gold plated .32 ACP and mack on a deer, well, he’s going to be in for a big surprise…as he starves to death.

Fishing on the other hand, I suspect, will find the ponds/lakes depleted in short order (excepting the Great Lakes, hard to overfish those without high tech).

On the plus side though, the overabundance of wild hogs will ensure a ready supply of well-cooked meat…

I tend to agree with your above post in that we would soon regroup and figure things out. It isn’t like we lose knowledge. The problem will be the initial shock and ensuing lawlessness.

Trolltrainer – I’d have to disagree on not loosing knowledge. Depending on the extent of the disaster we could be left without a lot of knowledge.

David, true. Even more profound to think about is the knowledge and skills we have lost up to this point that will become necessary once again when we do not have electricity, computers, and advanced tools and tooling.

I tend to think that most scenarios would be relative to what GhostofJefferson relates though. Even losing 50-even 75% of the population still leaves us with many people with skills. No matter what happens civilization has a habit of recovering.

I am not much of a doomsday type, I mostly look at these scenarios as fictional. Not saying they couldn’t happen, but if/when it does it will be unlike anything you have thought of. You simply do not know what will happen. My personal hope is that me and my family are raptured out of this mess before it all comes crashing down. If we are wrong? So be it…We just do what we can when called upon. Tis all we can do…

The Bible is clear when it says there will be a day to come that a days wages will buy a loaf of bread. To me if you arent prepared, you are the one who is crazy!

I would not live in a big city for a million dollars now. When the SHTF the ities will burn to the ground. You were warned by a prepper…

It will be hard to survive in a population center. I want to be in a place where I can grow crops and hunt. I am not so much worried about stockpiling as I am in keeping my survival skills sharp. The ammo could run out at some point, what then? Knowledge of making weapons and trapping will make the difference to eating or starving.

      @Troll

Bow hunting is your friend. Arrow making is not terribly difficult (hell, cavemen did it), and your bow can last for decades with proper routine maintenance and upkeep (and a few extra strings of course, cheap and non-perishable).

I honestly don’t see the world collapsing back to caveman technology though. As I see it, the worst will be a few years of 19th century mixed with 21st century (think Yugoslavia as it collapsed), and lots of bloodshed, then quiet as everybody regroups and settles back into civilization.

I am sorry that your family laughs at you. It will be like the story of the little hen that baked a loaf of bread and nobody would help her but when it was done, those who did not help wanted to enjoy the bread.
If you are a man and the had of the family, you are to be commended for caring and realizing and taking care of your family instead of having them make fun of you. Keep up what you are doing. The ones that are going to suffer the most are the ones who believed that they were going in the rapture and because of that, did nothing about it.

Made me think of folks laughing at Noah as he built the ark.

I live 20 minutes to the nearest grocery store. The shelves went bare a few years ago when a huge snowstorm hit around a holiday. Was stunned to see how quickly the supply line was disrupted. Learned them to be prepared!

This is in reply to TrollTrainer:

What will you eat while waiting for your crops to grow? A human can live on meat sure, but veggies, fruits, potatoes, beans are needed in order to stay healthy enough to track game, kill it, clean it, and preserve it. I would suggest collecting enough canned food to last at least one year. That will give you time to plant, grow, and harvest a garden. Good luck and God Bless.

      Sorry Americanstrega,

I am stocked up. My post here seems to suggest otherwise, I apologize for not making it clear. Look at my initial posts above. My point was stockpiling is not necessarily the most important thing. Stock up too little and you will soon have to move or starve. Too much and you lose your mobility and also have to defend your property. Each situation is different and you cannot plan for everything. The constant question is, “should I stay or should I go.” Instead of living on stockpiled resources my goal is to place myself in a position where I can survive indefinitely with what is around me.

But yes, crops do take time to grow and even in Florida are seasonable. However, where I live I will not starve and before long I could settle in to the new lifestyle.
