‘Meet the Press’ Host Actually Asks Santorum if He Will Ban Working Mothers From His Administration

Santorum Asked About Women in the Workplace on Meet the Press and This Week

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum made the rounds on this week‘s Sunday morning news shows where despite his campaign’s messaging as a pro-Liberty candidate in tune with the needs of the poor and those unemployed from manufacturing jobs gone abroad, interviewers focused on the former Pennsylvania senator’s well-known positions on social issues. Both David Gregory of NBC and George Stephanopoulos of ABC pressed Santorum on his comments regarding female soldiers and passages in his book “It Takes a Family.”

During Sunday’s “Meet the Press”on NBC Gregory called into question Santorum’s perception of feminism, citing that what he has learned about the movement from his working wife, mother and sister, is respecting the choice of working or not working, not what he calls Santorum’s idea that “somehow the choice of working” undermines “the traditional family.” After Santorum described his own experience growing up in a family where his mother worked and made more money than his father, and went on to explain that the section of his book called into question was co-written by his wife in reference to her experience of not feeling affirmation from the feminist community after deciding to go from working as a lawyer to staying at home to raise their children, Gregory was still not satisfied.

The host’s next question has been criticized by some who say it insinuates an extremely strong claim that Santorum has discriminatory views towards women:

DAVID GREGORY: Let me ask you one more question about women.  If you are President of the United States, and women want to work in your administration. Do single women without children only need apply?  Are you going to respect the decision of women to come work for you if that’s the choice they make, or would they be somehow held by radical feminists?

RICK SANTORUM: Well, I think if you go back and look at the people who have worked for me you’d find single women, we have married women, you’ve got all sorts of folks. You know, those are decisions I affirm. If women want to come into the workforce, great.  If they don’t, that’s great.  You know, we’re going to look at the best-qualified people and there will be plenty of working moms who will be in our administration and be adding greatly to the conservative cause I believe in.

Mark Finkelstein of NewsBusters did not respond as cordially to Gregory’s line of questioning.

“On today’s Meet The Press, “moderator” David Gregory gave a good preview of how the MSM/Obama industrial complex will try to cariacture and demonize Rick Santorum should he become the Republican presidential candidate.”

[..]

“Consider that Gregory‘s formulation of ’only single women without children need apply’ is an echo of the prejudiced phraseology of the past, in which employers would advertise: ‘only [whites, Christians, etc.] need apply.’  So Gregory was seeking to associate Santorum with that sorry past.”

Santorum was met with equal tension on ABC’s “This Week.”

When host (and former top aide in the Clinton campaign and White House) George Stephanopoulos asked Santorum what he would say to those who think his comments on radical feminism alienate women and make him an easier candidate to beat in the general election, Santorum said that his remarks were in regards to affirming a woman’s choice to enter the workplace equally to the choice, as made by his wife, to give up her career to raise their kids.

“Well, that section of the book was co-written, if you want to be honest about it, by my wife, who is a nurse and a lawyer,” Santorum said. “And when she gave up that practice and she gave up, you know, nursing to raise a family, I mean, she felt very much that society was sort of — in many cases, looked down their nose at that decision.  And all I’ve said is — and in talking with my wife and others like her — who’ve given up their careers that they should be affirmed in their decision like everybody else and that these are choices, and they’re tough choices.”

Santorum went on to say “I think it’s important that women both outside the home and inside the home are affirmed for their choices they make, that they are, in fact, choices, and society, you know, treats them in a sense equally for whatever decision they make that’s best for them.”

Stephanopoulos next asked the candidate about a quote from his book (reported in the Washington Post Friday without page citation) which appeared to surprise Santorum.

“You say that now, but you also wrote in the book that radical feminists have been making the pitch that justice demands that men and women be given an equal opportunity to make it to the top in the workplace.  Isn’t that something that everyone should value?”

“Yeah, I have no problem — I don’t know — that’s a new quote for me,” a visually taken aback Santorum responded. “I don’t know what context that was given.  But the bottom line is that people should have equal opportunity to rise in the workforce.  And, again, if you read the entire section, I don’t think anyone will have a problem with the fact that what I was calling for — very clearly calling for is the treatment of an affirmation of whatever decision women decide to make.”

POLITICO notes that “It Takes a Family” was written in response to Hillary Clinton’s “It Takes a Village” in the 1990s, and was not generally taken by women’s rights groups as an affirmation for women. Mediaite video of Santorum’s exchange with Stephanopoulos on “This Week.”

Seems as if everyone is missing the point and how the media works with the Socialist Government. Obama is forcing FREE contraceptives & FREE abortions which undermines “the traditional family. Obama is presenting the ground work for women losing their job security due to pregnancy. With FREE ways to stop bearing children women will lose their rights in undetermined ways under this regime, if its jobs, benefits or something else. In Socialist Fashion, the media blind sides the opposing party with the issue.

If you lend yourself to an interview with either one of these leftist, Obama drum beating dolts, you have subjected yourself to heavy duty enemy fire. These “boys” are not looking for the truth, but are looking for things they or their cohorts in crime, the chief of whom is Barack Hussein Obama, to hang upon Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum either now or the general election, should Santorum accede to the nomination for President.

Incidentally Blaze, Santorum responded quite admirably and the “boys” from the hood did not accomplish their purpose, which was to malign Santorum and to hang some “gotcha” on him. they are now murmuring to themselves, “Damn, we didn’t get him this time either.” You know what folks, they aren’t going to get him next time either, for there is nothing to get. Should he win the nomination, he will more than hold his own against Obama. Obama will be shown to be exactly what he is – a ruthless, tyrannical, traitorous, anti-Constitution, unAmerican, anti-small business, anti-family, ungodly freak from the dark side. You either know the complete context of Santorums “Combat Emotions” and making an attempt at BS or you have made no effort to investigate the bases for his comments; equally as irresponsible. Santorum was referring the natural tendencies for heterosexual men to take protective positions toward females as they have for all time. These “emotions” can cause male soldiers to make decisions that may not be in the best interest of the team or mission. Many current military leaders as well as those from the past including Norman Schwarzkopf have made the same statement. BTW posting regurgitated blog onions from other sites including those supporting Ron Paul isn’t very original. Forming onions from others and blogs that simply parrot a particular agenda is why we have so many politicians that normally wouldn’t qualify for the third shift at Burger King.

While I agree that this was a pretty dumb question, just wait until they start attacking this jewel.

“This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. You know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone. That there is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.”

Now there’s a quote I find quite disturbing, and certainly deserves some clarification.

Rick Santorum: A Massively Expanded Welfare State is ‘The Genuine Conservatism our Founders Envisioned’

“What was my vision? I came to the uncomfortable realization that conservatives were not only reluctant to spend government dollars on the poor, they hadn’t even thought much about what might work better. I often describe my conservative colleagues during this time as simply ‘cheap liberals.’ My own economically modest personal background and my faith had taught me to care for those who are less fortunate, but I too had not yet given much thought to the proper role of government in this mission”

“I suspect some will dismiss my ideas as just an extended version of ‘compassionate conservatism.’ Some will reject what I have said as a kind of ‘Big Government Conservatism.’ Some will say that what I’ve tried to argue isn’t conservatism at all. But I believe what I’ve been presenting is the genuine conservatism our Founders envisioned. One that fosters the opportunity for all Americans to live as we are called to live, in selfless families that contribute to the general welfare, the common good”

Santorum needs to get a very thick skin very fast if he expects to beat Obama. The socialist press will support their mighty leader, so Santorum needs to lay down some hard truths about Obama instead of letting interviewers pounce on him. It is all about Obama. He could start by mentioning that Obama’s first act as President was to lift the ban on partial birth abortions and allow more embroyos to be used for research. That says alot about the kind of man Obama is. He simply does not value life!.

If a member of the legislative branch waits for a vote that doesn’t contain a rider he or she may as well go home. In your clip Santorum states radical individualism, also known as “anarchy, will not succeeded in America, Napolitano says it would be a good choice and you’re okay with that? Then he asks Bill Maher’s pal David Boaz, the darling of NPR, to validate his statement. David Boaz who believes that libertarianism give individuals the right to marry whoever or whatever whenever they choose.
As a senator Rick Santorum represented the state of Pennsylvania ( a republican senator from Pennsylvania, a real oxymoron) a union state he voted as he should have, others don’t, in the best interest of those he represented.
Now for the reality. The electorate doesn’t give a crap about the Blaze, the 24 hour news cycle or what you or I believe. The electorate cares about “cute” and who will protect their “rice bowl”. To them Romney is an android with no fire, Gingrich and Paul are two angry old white guys. . The only young people who support old white guys are those looking for no defense spending and legal drugs. The folks are not interested in a record. Santorum will win a brokered nomination because he represents what the folks support God, Mom’s Apple Pie, NASCAR and Tim Bebow.

@informed, You really have a misconception of libertarianism.

The right to marry is not a “federal government issue”, It’s a church issue. Santorum want’s to legislate morality, It will never happen. Times change and morality changes, and more government laws isn’t going to solve it. Going back to small communities and families is the key, Which santorum lacks to understand.

Never smoked pot a day in my life, But nice try. I want to legalize the constitution. Also, in the Bible the book of Paul, Romans. He talks about morality, maybe you should read it. Bible also talks about just war, Small government, Taxation, honest money. Many of which are the foundation for the constitution.

If we returned to the constitution, Non-Intervention, No welfare or warfare(Military industrial complex), Strong national defense( Which isn’t maintaining 900 bases around the world). Most of our problems would be solved. We are broke we cannot afford our empire anymore, Like it or not one day our troops will all come home, And we will be defenseless.

I guess Thomas Jefferson was a anarchist by your definition. Like it or not Judge Napolitano is right on most issues.

My question to you is why does a Pro-israel Candidate like Santorum, Support Giving foreign aid to Israels enemies? The best thing we can do for Israel, Is to get out of Israel’s way.

I personally would love to see a more libertarian form of government take hold. I’m a realist. With 42 percent of the population on the government dole our country is at a critical tipping point. If the current administration is allowed to continue and the entitlement constituency becomes the majority we will never be able to return to days of self sufficiency and personal responsibility. Not to realize that we are headed for the cliff behind the EU is simply naive. Attempting to elect a do nothing , bloviating Ron Paul president is unrealistic. In all the years as congressmen he has sponsored but one bill yet brought more “pork” to his district than 65% of other congressmen. The current philosophy of government and those that depend on it can only be unwound from within. There is but one intelligent, proven conservative in the country capable of reestablishing the something similar to the original republic and that would be Bobby Jindal.

How can you vote for someone who voted for the patriot act, tsa, and prescription drug plan. Conservatives are supposed to conserve. The two party system is a joke. They are more similar then different. Just a illusion, that you think you are getting something of different substance. What is difference in bush and Obama? Nothing but style and color of the skin. Both love undeclared wars, Both love spending, Both assault civil liberties. Old people sending young people to war, What a tragedy.

On the pork note, Would you rather have congress appoint the money, or lay that power into the executive branch? It’s just getting it back to your district. Only if the income tax could be abolished (Wet Dream). The government would be slashed in half.

On bobby, He voted to extend the patriot act( Repeal the fourth amendment act).

When people trade, Armies to not cross borders. I’m not in the tank for Ron Paul either, I’ll be voting Gary Johnson.

There’s precious little “freedom of the press” left in this country. The mainstream media is so one-sided, I‘m beginning to suspect I’m living in a totalitarian state. Witness the multitude of questions about Obama that they never found worth pursuing, while every Republican candidate is given a proctological exam by the press. This is doubly true if the candidate is a black conservative, a female conservative, a hispanic conservative… these especially must be sought out & destroyed. This lets them maintain the plot line about how only the Democratic party represents those groups. Republicans- in the mainstream medias’ view- are the party of white guys, and now that they have the field down to a group of just that, white guys, they must now figure out where to start pecking on them. I guess Rick should be happy if that’s the worst thing they can think to throw at him, but I tend to agree with the poster that regretted him even stooping to answer that question.

      http://biggovernment.com/abreitbart/2011/10/03/shock-photos-barack-obama-with-new-black-panther-party-on-campaign-trail-in-2007/

New photographs obtained exclusively by BigGovernment.com reveal that Barack Obama appeared and marched with members of the New Black Panther Party as he campaigned for president in Selma, Alabama in March 2007.
The photographs, captured from a Flickr photo-sharing account before it was scrubbed, are the latest evidence of the mainstream media’s failure to examine Obama’s extremist ties and radical roots.
In addition, the new images raise questions about the possible motives of the Obama administration in its infamous decision to drop the prosecution of the Panthers for voter intimidation.

It comes from a very one sided news organization that seems very open about their right wing viewpoints, I like to use information that comes from an unbiased source. Also Obama was with the NEW Black Panther Party which is not an official successor to the Black Panther Party. I think there are some differences between the two parties. I know many people view the party as radical, and it might be, but isn’t the founder of this news agency considered a radical by many people too. I’m not sure if readers of this site have the best situated ethos to critic Obama on being radical.

Typical radical leftist projection trying to paint conservatives as the evil wackos they hope people will believe of them. Leftist news organizers always craft their and synchronize their messages to advance the agenda of socialism and always paint extreme projections against fellow US citizens they view as the enemy of their Marxist agenda. It’s amazing to me that one can be considered a moderate for pleading for the continued leftist radicalization of the nation in the order of Che and the Occupiers riots, but the peaceful Tea Party are the “violent, radical enemy” of the republic and our nation. No way. Not true, but leave it up to this administration and the leftist controlled media to promote the radical rioters of the Occupy movement and the Muslim Brotherhood’s “Arab Spring” and their “Social Justice” movement against the western, capitalist world and it’s unacceptable freedom that has benefited the entire world. Hi TexBork. I had some concerns about your comment. First of all, you name calling gets you nowhere. By calling people socialist you not only degrade the other people but also yourself. Both of these things and undesirable. Also I would like to notify your that in actuality most of the media is not liberal. Most media outlets are owned by filthy rich men, just look at how many media outlets Rupert Murdoch owns, and by no means is he liberal. So all of these media outlets are radically conservative people who manage what and how news content is presented. Also all media is dependent on advertisers. Now days advertisers are major corporations, once again generally very conservative or right wing organizations. If media outlets were to be liberal and relay messages that would frustrate their corporate sponsors they would not be able to sell their ad time and would go out of business. Because of this media outlets are controlled by their administration and sponsors and don’r relay that many liberal messages. So I hope that was helpful, have a good day.

Minerva, where have you been? It is not rude to call people socialists who believe in socialism. I think it is Dylan Rattigan of MSNBC who is proud to be one. You had Justice Ginsberg over in Egypt saying that they shouldn’t copy the US constitution. Wanting the government to provide for the people things like healthcare, housing and food is the very foundation of socialism. Redistribution of wealth is another plank of socialism. The whole thing of the 1% not paying their fair share that is a socialist statement.

The networks are so in the tank for Obama. My sister lives in Tuscon and only watches NBC. She didn’t know about Fast and Furious. They thought it was a movie. You probably do too.

Do you think they would be offended if we called them socialists. It is what they want. It’s like saying I would be offended if you called me a conservative.
I appreciate you trying to be civil, but it really sounds like you just came in the middle of a movie, and haven’t been able to pick up the plot. I don’t blame you, if all you have been listening to, is Mainstream Media outlets. What you haven’t been told would blow your mind. Did you ever hear that Speaker of the House Boehner had white powder delivered to one of his offices? I saw it on the internet when I was at my sisters last summer. No mention of it on NBC. Why?

Ok sorry I should have been clearer, I’m a little new to this. So what I meant is that just because there are people who disagree with you, that does not mean that we should call them insulting terms, whether it is liberal, communist or whatever. Just because they have different thoughts doesn’t mean they are bad people. By not respecting a person for their differences we sink to a lower level. So if you are talking to a person who disagrees with you I think we shouldn’t immediately attack them but instead sanely and humanely use intelligence to understand their viewpoints and use respectable tools of communication to persuade them. Doesn’t that seem better?

Ha, I like Smokey Bojangles comment! Look, we have precious little “freedom of the press” left in this country. When did the guys from Pravda sneak in? Obama first ran for office as a member of something called the “New Party” in Illinois, proud Socialists one and all. It was never covered in the press. He frequented a gay “gentlemens club” in Chicago. You’ll never hear a word breathed of it! Now I see him marching with the “New Black Panthers.” My reaction at this point is just, so what? Nothing shocks me any more about this guy, but the mainstream medias’ ignoring-to-the-point-of-denial? THAT shocks me. Compare it to the treatment any Republican presidential candidate is getting… my case in point.

      @MINERVA111,
You and I (as do many of us “non-conservative types”) know quite well that conservatives consider the term “Liberal” as something derogatory and even profane. As though being a Liberal is something to be ashamed of. This is typical of the failures of the Republican strategy to denounce and defame the Left. They have a whole sorted list of comical mutations to describe the Democrats. The most commonly used is Libo-tard. They think terms such as this cause hurt and embarrassment to us but the only people that it hurts are the ones using these terms as (feeble and ineffective) offensive weapons. The thing I find most amusing about this behavior is the fact that these twits sit around wasting hours upon hours thinking up these terms like these,… and THIS is the best they can do? It would be even funnier if it weren’t so pathetic.

Yes. No. Okay, no. But your church, the Catholic church, is against all forms of birth control. Are you really at odds with your own church, Senator? Isn’t that hypocritical, Senator? What other hypocritical beliefs do you have, Senator? I know you’re strongly against abortion. What if your own daughter, if she were pregnant, was very sick and the only chance to save her was an abortion. Should she have it? Yes. No. I’m sorry, can you repeat that? Senator Santorum, you supported Arlen Specter and voted to confirm Sonya Sotomayor to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. Both are strongly pro-choice. Many posters here are confusing CONTRACEPTION and BIRTH CONTROL. The Catholic Church is not opposed to the latter, but instead, is opposed to the former. “Natural family planning,” which is quite effective, is a form of birth control accepted by the Church. The Church’s position is this: All sexual acts must be opened to the possibility of procreation. That means no pills, no condoms, or other artificial barriers.

Hey Minerva111, This is the results from the vote to allow women equal rights to vote: The key vote came on June 4, 1919, when the Senate approved the amendment by 56 to 25 after four hours of debate, during which Democratic Senators opposed to the amendment filibustered to prevent a roll call until their absent Senators could be protected by pairs. The Ayes included 36 (82%) Republicans and 20 (54%) Democrats. The Nays comprised 8 (18%) Republicans and 17 (46%) Democrats. It was ratified by sufficient states in 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibited state or federal sex-based restrictions on voting.[58]

It seems the Republicans made up the majority of those who were in favor of.

You also might want to remember it was Woodrow Wilson in the White House at the time; A DEMOCRAT.

Because the Democratic party does not speak out against the treatment of women and children under Sharia Law. They attempt to attack Christian views on the family and women, but yet they give Islam a free pass for killing their daughters who get pregnant and their sons who are homosexuals, all this in the name of family honor. You idiots don’t understand what is going on in America today. You can’t be an American and not hold true to Christian values. If you hold to no values, then the values of those who rule over you will be forced down your throat. Are you ready to swallow that? If you continue to see Religion as the evil, then you haven’t seen evil until Islam comes through your door. I guess it‘s okay with you as long as Islam doesn’t effect you. You will just turn your back on the women that are being abused under the guise of religion. In Islam they do not want their women to be seen by others, let alone go to work. All Santorum suggest is that you ignorant feminist support a woman’s decision to raise her own children. Of course the progressive socialist would take our children and raise them to be brain washed children of the state. People like you don’t know enough about socialism, and marxism to know it is impossible to treat people equally. We all have different desire and dreams and wish to live our lives differently. You don’t want out of life what I want. I don’t want out of life what you want. I don’t share the marxist/socialist dream.

That is a prejudiced and judgmental statement and I, for one, am offended. You have been preaching manners to everyone on this site today, but all of a sudden, when someone links faith with politics.you turn into a bigot.

Faith is by it’s very nature. a reasoned explanation of one’s beliefs. If you have faith in anything, but don’t let it intrude into your thinking in every area of your life, then it is not true faith, it may as well be a hobby. My politics are informed by my faith. My political beliefs are an outgrowth of my faith. Politics is not my faith, but my faith forms my politics. I am sorry that you did not receive an accurate account of our nation’s founding, but it was through the faith of many of the revolutionaries and founders that the USA came to exist.

Yes, it was a stupid question, but Rick atually came off quite well as far as I’m concerned. He was the most personable I’ve ever seen him. At least he didn’t turn beat red like his was going to explode as he does every time RP schools him in a debate. That being said, he’s still a Patriot Act supporting douche.

Yes Rick brought some class to this interview. No one should be surprised by any stupid questions they ask we know who they are and what their about so Rick was the better one of the two and a great answer.

David Gregory needs a Cat scan immediately.
He either has dementia or the liberals have rotted his brain.

Tim Russert must be rolling over in his grave. The bias and crap from GE/NBC and the rest of Main Slime Media are seriously demented and most Americans are fully aware of it.

Chief of Staff Loo? on tv today sounded like a stepford babbling machine.
HONESTLY who is buying this crap???

Who’s buying it? All the mental midgets who believe in fairness, hope, change, peace, love, and kumbaya. You know, like Gregory, F Chuck, Snuffleupagus, Madcow, and the minions who tune in to them daily. I want to scream when the love of my life is watching one of them, but then I’m usually doing the wifey thing, being held down by the patriarchy.

This is why I see Rick doing exceptionally well against the ‘poser-in-chief’ in the debates ahead. He is not without an answer and happily shows his ‘are you really asking such a stupid question’ reaction; during his responses. Well done, Rick.

What was the basis for that kind of question? Feminism? What is this the 60′s? Is Santorum supposed to be opposing feminists around the country? I’m sick of this B.S. from MSM. You talk about the need to start a riot someplace, how about MSM headquarters and every news outlet connected to them? We don’t need these buffoonery taking place, while our country is being ripped from it’s foundation.

This is what we’re going to get if we nominate Deacon Rick. One stupid question after another designed to make him look like an idiot. And he‘s so naive he’ll answer every one of them with a straight face, with his little bunny nose twitching from side to side. Radical feminism has been dead for twenty years, but Santorum will revive it – full force. We’ll have gay parades and pro-abortion demonstrations everywhere. They‘ll have him spending so much time defending himself he won’t be able to focus on Obama. HE WILL BECOME THE ISSUE.
