Meet the U.S. Military’s First Openly-Gay General

Brig. Gen Tammy S. Smith is quite accomplished. The 49-year-old has been serving in the U.S. Army for the past 26 years and, on Friday, she became a general. But, Smith is making headlines for a reason that supersedes her professional abilities. At her pinning ceremony last week, she became the first openly-gay general to serve in the Army — and the overall military’s — ranks.
This development comes after the military dropped its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy last year. During a ceremony on Friday, Smith’s wife, activist Tracey Hepner, pinned on her star, publicly acknowledging Smith’s sexuality and open devotion to another female. In a press release put out by the Defense Department, Smith said that “participating with family in traditional ceremonies such as the promotion is both common and expected of a leader.”
As far as her distinction as being the first gay general, Smith openly pushed her historic standing aside.
“All of those facts are irrelevant,” Smith said of her sexuality, according to Stars and Stripes. “I don’t think I need to be focused on that. What is relevant is upholding Army values and the responsibility this carries.”
According to The New York Times, Smith and Hepner got married in March 2011 in the District of Columbia. Hepner is the co-founder of the Militaries Partners and Families Coalition, a non-profit organization that “provides support, resources, education and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender military partners and their families.”
“The support we’ve received has been amazing,” Hepner said of the chatter surrounding Smith’s openness. “I wasn’t surprised that people were so accepting, but in some cases it has been even celebratory.”
“It’s like nothing has really changed for us, and yet everything has changed,” she added.
From 2010 to 2011, General Smith was deployed to Afghanistan where she served as the chief of Army Reserve Affairs, the Times reports. Currently, she is the deputy chief of the Army Reserve in Washington, D.C.
Advocates claim that it’s unlikely that Smith is the first gay general, however recent changes concerning “don’t ask, don’t tell,” among other military sentiments have created a scenario in which she can be the first open individual.
“For me, the story is about the promotion and the opportunities it brings,” Smith maintains.

Oh and we haven‘t even see Obama’s October surprise yet, I’m guessing it will be the declaration that the war on drugs has not been successful so here is; Federal legalization of pot. Posted on August 13, 2012 at 11:19amClassic Barbarism …appoint people loyal to a person rather than the Civil rule of law. The fact that this deluded homosexual woman is openly proclaiming her perversion as good merely illustrates just how far we have gone down the road where good is defined as evil and evil as good. Here is a great evil…and her loyality to Obama trumps the law/more that bans openly gay individuals in a civilized society.
Since homosexuality is a choice/preference not a genetic condition and a “choice” that now places innocent children in a very very sick household where the probability of abuse is over 80 percent. I find that this whole story is pathetically appalling. The honor of the United States military is being repeately ground into the mud by this pervert and her liberal cohorts…
Hopefully we can see remediative changes with Romney/Ryan and the new Republican majorities are elected in November…

I’ve been in the Army now 19 years and 11 of them have been in the Reserves and I served in Iraq. I can tell you that i‘ve seen many awards given out just to advance an officers or high ranking NCO’s career while the soldiers who take all of the risk and do all of the work get a Certificate of Appreciation. That being said she has jump wings with a star, when did she get a combat jump. She also has a CAB when whould she have seen combat action as the Army Res. COA. No offense to anyone out there to whom this applies but i have no respect for anyone who has a Bronze Star without the V device because I have literaly seen hundreds of them given out to NCO‘s and Officers who did’nt deserve them. And as soon as I read the headline I thought i bet she just got promoted and was’nt already a general and came out of the closet. She got promoted because they wanted a gay officer. I know that many of you have unending pride in our military but let me be the first to openly expose the fact that our Army has become a social program. People are promoted/awarded for the social benefit’s. I was proud of my service in the Army at one time but over the last 10 years I am disgusted by everything I see going on and I am so thankful to be retiring soon. This Army is weak and if something is’nt done soon to fix these problems we will be combat ineffective.

I am with you on the whole Bronze Star deal. It has become a joke, where every captain major and SFC and up working on the FOB get one, even if they never saw a round fired. That kid walking point, and in the heat of it gets put in for a for a pat on the back, and it gets downgraded to a kick in the butt.
I have three combat tours, and no Bronze Star medals. The good thing about running advisor teams, is I got to control every award sent in for my teams. I ensured that none ever went forward with my name on it. I cannot count how many officers I saw deploy, and when they hit the ground, they were writing their own awards. Awards should be for the soldiers doing the fighting, not for the staff folks.
If you want to see something impressive, google up a picture of Gen George Marshall. He did it right.

The American male got castrated by the political correctness police. He sat by drinking his beer, and watching his pro and college sports, while the multicultural crowd indoctrinated his kids, the feminist over took his church, and in the military our highest leaders have moved away from the character and values of a George Washington, and adopted the morality of Lady Ga Ga.

Posted on August 13, 2012 at 4:01pm@obamasacommie: First, the criteria for the CAB is not the same as a CIB. It simply requires the recipient to have been being under “Direct Fire” from an enemy combatant or injured by indirect enemy fire. So, if she was on the receiving end of some mutt w/ an AK taking pot shots, as a field grade officer, she qualifies. I agree with your assessment regarding the awarding of medals, badges etc to officers getting their ticket punched (i.e. 60 days at a FOB and gone w/ a CIB AND a bronze star). I have seen a lot of officers make a big deal about getting the CAB and CIB and yes, but to a lesser extent senior NCOS. But truth be told this has been a phenomenon since the first rounds went down range at Lexington and Concord. I have also been privileged to know officers and Sr. NCOs who are real warriors and exemplify the word in deed and character, who gave their troops all of the recognition and asked for none in return, because that is what LEADERS do. Until recently I was a Senior NCO in an ARMY National Guard unit, and we had a bunch of kids who EARNED their CABs and CIBs and often the Purple Hearts that went with them. So, I know the difference between sustained combat operations and “direct enemy fire.” Question is, did she fight or di di mau.
Report Post »As for the jump wings, the star at the top of the canopy denotes “Senior” parachutist, not combat jumps. Combat jumps are denoted by a smaller bronze star in the center of the suspension lines. RLTW

You may consider allowing enlisted men to marry without command permission another nail in the coffin lid.
The progressives have been dismantling our military, making it a social welfare state experiment for over a century.
If your goal is a world government, what need is there of a military that is ready to fight another country?
What you want is a police force. And for all their bluster, SWAG and militarization, police are essentially civilians.

You have a serious inability to apply statistics logically. Almost without exception, gays have a disproportionally high percentage of STDs.
Heterosexuals are 97% of the population, so if they have 70% of a certain STD, than that would tell you that the 2.5% gay population is toting 30% of that sickness.
Once again, gays have 64% of the syphilis, and around 70% of the HIV. Statistically, that is very significant. If that same 2.5% had only 20% of the syphilis or HIV, it would still be significant, being they are less than 3% of the population. When you throw in the gay bowel syndrome, depression, suicide, high percentage of breast cancer and other medical problems that lesbians have, it is clear that the homosexuals are not a healthy group of people.

You’re the one with the understanding issues.
The statistics are against the entire population, not against the populous afflicted. IE,
“Of Homosexuals X% have this STD and of Heterosexuals Y% have that STD.”
Not
“Of all people with this STD X% are homosexual and Y% are heterosexual.”
Were the later the case (as you are suggesting) all values should pair off to total 100%.
So, while the population sizes will effect the standard deviations, they need not be taken into account when reporting the hard percentages.

Posted on August 13, 2012 at 9:33amIt is news Ted. A business, an army, or a person needs to know the environment it operates in or it is all thud & blinder. … and then you fail.
Her picture & resume sets me on edge. It is not her short hair. I have seen women with crew cuts decades ago. It provoked instant comments. My mother said it was normal. So these women having short hair is not what sets me on edge. What sets me on edge is that you can look at the picture & guess the relationship. Then you ask how does that work? Ever since The Blaze published the article on gay America showing numerous gay couples, it is clear that we are dealing with psychologically unhealthy individuals. She is unfit to be general, but we have to accept it & soldier on. Things won’t be set right for some time. Trust me it will be set right. The science is just not there. The most that they can come with it being genetic is 40% on the outside. I rue not copying a post that said being gay was like MS, sickle cell anemia or Tay Sach disease. Well if it is a disease you cure it. If it is a disease then you replace the bad alleles with gene therapy. If genetics is 40% on the outside then you don’t go the other 60% & ensure gayness, you fix the 40% of less. If you are at 40% or less it is much better to go back then to go the last 60% of the way for a life full of problems. It was a Swedish study that looked at all twins in Sweden. They did not want it to be skewed by self selection of gays.

This woman has given her life to serve our Country, and you think she should be discharged because she is open about her sexual preference. How very unpatriotic of you. And by the way, homosexuality is normal behavior. It can be found throughout the animal kingdom, and while maybe not as common as heterosexuality, it definately is a normal and common part of existence and is not a choice.
Report Post »LuvsYeshua
Posted on August 13, 2012 at 9:14amRespectfully, I beg to differ. Here’s why we should know about this. Once the military and police are filled up with homosexuals, women, union members, and other typically communist/atheist people, they will have NO PROBLEM rounding up Bible believing, freedom-loving Christians and patriots and doing away with us however that may be.
I’m not sure if you are or were ever in the military, but she has TREMENDOUS power as a general. A Brigadier General (1 star) is typically second in command of a division-sized unit––like the 82nd Airborne Division or the 101st Airborne Division. She’s not yet in charge of a combat unit of that caliber, but give it time.
She’s in the Army Reserve, and it will be those ‘softer’ types of military units that will be called in to conduct ‘assistance’ with local police and such when that time comes. She, as a lesbian will have no problem rounding up the very people who, like God, call her lifestyle SIN.

Emphasis mine. You’ve already set yourself against 51% of the country by claiming WOMEN to be the enemies of Christians. I suppose you don’t know any women who are Christian but still serve our military and/or police force?
Report Post »LuvsYeshua

I say nothing out of politics or political correctness, nor do I care if I have “set [myself] against 51% of the country.” The truth doesn’t care who it offends. In general, women that join the military are single (that’s not to say they stay single), and in general single women tend to vote communist/atheist, whether they realize it or not. It is not hard to convince a single woman that she ‘deserves’ free healthcare, deserves free birth control, that it’s ok to have an abortion, that homosexuality is natural, that humans can control the climate, that killing animals is bad, and a million others.
There will soon come a time where I, and a declining few other Americans (including some women), will have set ourselves against about 95% of the country with our faith in Jesus Christ and His word, and not ‘religion’ and government like most of America puts their faith in.

Well, far be it from me to cure you of your martyr complex. You claim only 5% of the country follows Christ, while something like 70% identifies as Christian. I can understand thinking your sect alone is correct; all extremists usually start out this way. Can’t trust the military, can’t trust the police… heck, apparently you can’t trust single women either.
Despite saying you follow Christ, it seems you’re a lot more like a jihadist ready to take up arms against the infidel, and tell women what to do for their own good (because those poor single women can’t make their own decisions!). I’ll pray that you turn back toward Christ, stop worrying about the motes of dust in other peoples’ eyes, and concern yourself more with the big ol’ plank shoved in your own.
