Meet Time‘s ’Person of the Year’…‘The Protester’

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — “The Protester” has been named Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2011.

The selection was announced Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show.

The magazine cited dissent across the Middle East that has spread to Europe and the United States, and says these protesters are reshaping global politics.

Time Person of the Year is The Protester

“From the Arab Spring to Athens, from Occupy Wall Street to Athens,” the cover says.

Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honor.

Time’s “Person of the Year” is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor in 2009. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Time said it is recognizing protesters because they are “redefining people power” around the world. On its website, it even includes profiles of protesters, including multiple Occupy Wall Street occupiers.

However, it does seem odd that the magazine would recognize such a “person.” Consider that thousands have been arrested in the Occupy movement, Arab Spring protesters in Egypt have raped several female journalists, UK youths screamed “Off with their heads!” at Prince Charles, and Greek rioters have been filmed firebombing police.

This story has been updated with new information.

Pick a newsstand. Walk up, cover your eyes and say, “Wait, don’t tell me. The protests are great in every way.” Uncover your eyes, and it‘s as if you’re clairvoyant.

This keeps happening on a variety of subjects. At what point does it stop being “the news?”

I don’t have time for Time, beyond taking note of the cover and their obvious intent to further embolden the likes of OWS to unlawfully assemble while disturbing the peace with the stated intent of collapsing our system of liberty. One does not need to read time to know there agenda is to elevate Progressivism, Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Islamism and the other isms contrary to the Principles and Values upon which this nation was founded. It has not gone unnoticed that the demonstrators given the attention they seek, poo wherever they please.

I am suprised how many people who have commented can not seem to read. “Time’s “Person of the Year” is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill.” I would definitly say that protestors have captured the news during the past year for good or ill. (as here in the US) There are many calling for the Tea Party to be it but they have not done much this year to influence the culture and news throughout the world. So I would have to agree with Times pick (though I probably would not agree with the support they give it, but I have not read the article) Please Blazers, read the articles and think before you post. That way the left can’t say that we are a bunch of ill informed and ignorant individuals. (And don’t try to call me a troll or plant either. Look at my other posts and you will see that I am very conservative)

Why why why do you Blazers bother? Can you all be any more predictable? Whenever The Blaze has a story about a magazine or a TV show or whatever that disagrees at all with the Blazer ideology, all of your pile on the message board to say how irrelevant it is, or how you never read/watch it, or how it’s not funny/intelligent, blah blah blah.

As if anyone cares that you don’t like Time/The Daily Show/Bill Maher/ the Huffington Post/etc. Of course you hate anything that offers an alternative viewpoint! It’s pretty much a given here. It‘s like the time that the Founding Father’s insisted that no American should ever have to be exposed to a dissenting opinion…

Oh right–they didn’t say that. They actually valued public debate over lockstep ideology…

Barack Hussein Obama, the fraud, the deceiver, the charlatan, the traitor, the Muslim sympathizer, the Israeli back stabber, the economic destroyer, the imposter, and on and on the list goes. His day of reckoning is not far down the road.

OWS is dead. Public sentiment has hardened against them. However, the liberal media cannot stand losing what they thought would be the left’s tea party. So they keep propping up the corpse of OWS for pictures and salutes hoping to raise it from the dead. It won’t happen. The restaurant near Zuccotti Park that initially had to fire 21 employees because OWS had choked it‘s business is now closing it’s doors for good. over 90 people are now unemployed thanks to OWS. Indeed..person of the year? As we’d say it in Australia…TIME Magazine is only good for dunny paper and doctors’ offices.

The Time cover photo is zoomed in far too close. A wide shot would show the strings attached to the protest puppet, being manipulated and directed on by the big government socialists, ultra-rich liberals, and the leftist US government themselves. Time wants to “honor” a group, start with them. Besides, the stocking cap doesn’t allow us to see the sheep ears.

Sickening that Time would glorify the MASKED protester – those so ashamed of their actions here in the US, and so unwilling to own up to what they actually are protesting for, that they won’t show their faces. Never in my life did I think there would be news clips of masked protesters in the streets of the USA – people who have bought into the mob mentality hook, line and sinker.

NASADO, One does not have to drink the Progressive Kool-Aid to know it is Progressive Kool-Aid.

Intentional or not, stating that a person (or persons) is whatever category of the year, like it or not, has implications of adding positive value to those so chosen.

Is “Athlete of The Year” one who has defamed sport?

Is “Car of The Year” one that caused the most problems?

Time’s decision to include the infamous, wittingly or unwittingly, extends positive value to those negative choices that they have made. We do not yet know whether these veiled protesters have truly extended any positive value to the human condition, yet Time, in their own self-interest, have chosen to embolden the potential threat for global chaos that presently engulfs the globe.

Why not have “Person of The Year” carry positive connotation and denotation, and make choices accordingly?

Those with negative impact could be assigned a title that carries negative connotation and denotation, such as Scourge of The Year, or Villain of The Year.

Given that there are many who feel as I do, why should we read Times justification for that which we know in our hearts, by the very nature of the title, is counter productive to improving the human condition?

The protesters only need to know that they have been deemed to be more significant than any other person or persons to conclude that their cause is justified. They don‘t need to know Time’s details for their decision.

The 1st mention was a backhanded compliment.
Time days that a reason for the Tea Party was opposition to the Wall Street Bailouts. So why didn’t the OWS people join?

The other reason given was the election of a socialist. When Obama talks about the Constitution/Bill of Rights as a collection negative rights, he is a socialist.

Somehow socialist Obama & Family will feather their nest with the best of the nobles past & present.
The 2nd mention was a dismissal.
Way more time & attention devoted to OWS than the Tea Party. The two sentences to the Tea Party explain in leftist minds how it is evil & how it is over. We’ll see in 2012 if it is over. It might be. If Mickey Mouse & dog are voters & their signatures are valid, then we have no Democracy. To have some much ballot stuffing to steal election after election is the same as not holding elections only the weapons vary.

“In the U.S., the Obama campaign was in part a feel-good protest movement that galvanized young people, and then its shocking success and the Wall Street bailout produced an angry and shockingly successful populist protest movement in the Tea Party, which has far outlasted its expected shelf life.”

“After all, the Tea Party protests subsided only after Tea Partyers achieved real power in 2010 by becoming the tail wagging the Republican Party dog.”

Time has picked Hitler (1938), Stalin (1939 & 1942), & Yuri Andropov (1983). Time picks people in the same slipshod way that some men superficially pick women. If you pick Stalin in 1939 why not pick Hitler. They carved up Poland together. Andropov is a mere footnote. He served 15 months. Most people would remember Brezhnev, but Andropov? If you are going to pick people for their impact on the world, then they should have more business men & scientist. Apparently, the j school grads don’t know much about either (1960 the American Scientist & 1982 The Computer). I guess the j school grads couldn’t be bothered to learn who the pioneers of the computer revolution were or take the time & explain it in several pages of print.

Time is becoming more & more irrelevant. Their circulation has decreased by almost 20% over the last decade. Keep reading bud. I am going to read media that researches & analyzes enough that it can predict a several months to a year out.

I in no way disagree with your relply. I was simply stating that in accordance with the criteria set by Time, that the choice they made was fitting. I do not agree with the protests whatsoever but Time is free to choose whatever they want to qualify for the spot. Heck, they picked Hitler one year, no more needs to be said. All I am saying is that many of the people who have commented are making themselves look rediculous by crying out that a left leaning magazine writes an article fitting the criteria that they set about a left leaning group (OWS) as well as other protests (the Middle East) that have dominated a left leaning media who are focused on promoting left leaning ideas. There should be no surprise there and everyone should stop scting so shocked about it.

Including the Tea Parties works two ways for the marxstream media. NASADO, Please do not assume shock on my part, for I fully expect the absurd from Time, and as they have the right to intimate positive qualities to villains, so too do I have the right to express, by whatever available venue there is, my contempt, not shock, for them, and justify with logic and reason why I have such an opinion. I do not need to additionally support their absurd existence by reading the drivel they vomit to demonstrate tolerance or open mindedness on my part.

If the car with the worst record were named Car of The Year, I would not need to read the article to know it was an absurdity to give it such standing simply because it negatively impacted so many lives.

Time can define their meaning all they wish, by all other uses of the phrase ending “… of The Year,” such has been to impart superior quality to the subject. I don’t agree with Time, that is my right. I don’t have to read their blathering to be justified in a position that levels mistrust, as their historical bias gives me sufficient standing, and as to their convoluted mutation of the phrase “…of The Year,” it has never sat well with me, given that it equivocates good with evil, and imparts no inspiration for the reader to aspire to the good. I would argue that such is the mentoring of Celebrity, good or bad, a quality to which our youth are more enamored than emulating goodness.

In most all Counties and States it’s illegal to wear masks or clothes that cover your face in public (unless, of course, it’s -20 F outside or you’re a Muslim Woman).
Try walking around on a nice sunny day, all by yourself, looking like the person on the cover of Time Mag or through a shopping Mall. The Police will stop you in no time. But, if there are 100 of you carrying signs and wearing masks it’s OK! Just crazy!

this “award” holds as much weight as the Enquirers “sexiest person alive” or the Nobels peace prize going to Obama right after he expanded war in Afghanistan, sending 30k more troops….and off topic thought on the one thing ppl don’t like about Ron Paul, his stance on Iran/wars abroad….he has the backing of one of our founding fathers who said “the threat of danger in foreign countries has historically been used to thwart civil liberties at home”..James Madison….sound familiar?? “they have WMD’s,we have to strike first”…”we have to attack them over there so they don’t attack us over here”..”Iran is building a Nuke and will use on Israel,we just know it,just like we knew Iraq had WMD’s”.etc..all the fear mongering from repub candidates that we just HAVE to intervene overseas, when we’re just in an endless war in Afghanistan, and spending billions we don’t have policing the MId east, backing rebels in Libya and Egypt that even some conservatives agreed with…now how stupid do those look backing them, going along w/Obama on that one,now that the Muslim Brotherhood has taken over and there is a MORE extreme gov’t there.–so in turn,we lose billions we could use here in this country.& if we brought all our troops home and weapons, sat them at each ocean pointing away creating a blockade, anyone really think it’s even possible for someone to attack us-but with our military spread thin around world,we could be attacked & have no one here to protect,Paul is right

Being upset with European countries is no excuse to be ignorant. IB has been available for decades in schools across the country. It’s not as popular as Advanced Placement, but your comments about Geneva make me think you’ve never been there, nor know anything about the city or its country. I hope some day you’ll learn more.

Also, it’s important to note that the Curriculum and Assessment Centre for IB is in the UK, and that there are 30+ subdivisions of the program in the Americas. It’s a global program, not Switzerland-specific.

“However, it does seem odd that the magazine would honor such a “person.” Consider that thousands have been arrested in the Occupy movement, Arab Spring protesters in Egypt have raped several female journalists, and Greek rioters have been filmed firebombing police.”

Apparently the article‘s author can’t remember what he wrote a couple sentences before:

“Time’s “Person of the Year” is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill.”

It’s not a matter of “honoring” the person, it’s pointing out that the person (or group) has had a major influence in the world. No doubt about it, the last year has been drastically altered by protests.

Time went with the general, rather than the specific, possibly because Bouazizi actually burned himself last year and died on the fourth of January this year, but they seem to be more or less on the same page as far as what the most important story of the year was.

LOCKED…the wisest move the tea parties have done this year is stay out of the spotlight. OWS and it’s organizers were screaming indeed salivating for the tea parties to show up. Bill Ayers at every public appearance begged his faithful to bring the tea parties in. Wade Rathke and Steve Lerner the same. They wanted to exploit the tea parties either by using their proximity to legitimize OWS or by provoking confrontations which they knew the media would exploit in favor of the left and OWS. OWS failed to grow beyond the all too familiar lefty demographics and societal debris. Any student of these “movements” could have told you that when these types of protests fail to grow into popular movements, they lose the oxygen around them and fizzle out. At that point, they need confrontations and disruptions to keep themselves in the news. This is exactly the phase we’re seeing now. However..what you’ll see in 2012 is a lot of GOP and Tea Party event disruption by OWS (we’re seeing a taste of it now). They want to provoke confrontations. They want bad publicity for the tea parties and the GOP. I applaud the tea parties for the restraint they’ve shown so far. They need to show the same restraint and smart strategic thinking in 2012 when OWS gets in their face. The tea parties this year observed Napoleon’s rule and came away stonger for it…”never interrupt your enemy while he’s making a mistake”.

I completely agree. But because of that, and the fact that there hasn’t been a chance to flex their voting muscles, the Tea Party hasn’t had much of an influence in 2011. Hence my comment: they would have been a good choice for 2010, but not 2011.

LOCKED..the day the tea parties get a flattering reflection in TIME magazine is the day the Earth moves off it’s axis. TIME’s hypocrisy is stark. The tea parties facilitated one of most historic victories for the GOP in the house for 70 years. It will take several election cycles to change it but only now does “the protester” get a front row center seat at TIME? Why is that? The Arab Spring is proving to be quite malevolent. Putin won’t give up power in Russia, he’ll do what he does best…be a KGB man and take out the leaders of the protests. And here in the U.S. where TIME is really wanting to influence the conversation…OWS has died an ignominious death. The left didn‘t get it’s tea party as it thought it would. Public opinion hardened against OWS and all along the media tried (in vain) to keep OWS alive by sanitizing, ignoring or embellishing as the situation demanded. We’ve got a Law and Order episode “ripped from the headlines” that features OWS-esque protesters and a shady “one percenter”. Now we’ve got TIME with the now familiar image of a bandana-ed protester adorning it’s cover as “person of the year” as TIME trumpets “power to the people”…in a ham-handed attempt to romanticize, glamorize and resuscitate OWS. And would you answer me something? Why the bandanas? What are these stinky OWSers protecting? Their good names and reputations?

@ Colette the Passage is Isaiah 5:20 (preceding vs included to set context) ” Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands. Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst. Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it. And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled: But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness. Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat. Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it! Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
