Meet Vance West, the 92-Year-Old Cattle Rancher Who Pulled a Gun on Three Thieves

92 Year Old Cattle Rancher Pulls a Gun on 3 Thieves

Vance West is a veteran and father of three who lives alone on his more than 100-acre cattle ranch, unafraid to defend his property. West tells KY3 that he recently brandished his pistol to ward off three thieves who came back to his farm after previously stealing nearly $3,000 worth of equipment from one of his sheds.

“He started climbing over the gate, and I told him not to climb over.  He climbed over anyway, so I pulled a gun on him,” West said of his second encounter with a pack of bandits at his farm in a remote area of Missouri outside Bois d’Arc.

“I told him, ‘Do you see where it’s cocked?’  He says, ‘I can see,’” West told KY3.  “He was sassy.  He told me he wasn’t going to do it.”

“See, there’s where they left,” West said pointing out tire tracks during a KY3 report. After scaring the thieves away, the veteran says he ran to the country road outside his farm to try and flag down someone to help, but the criminals got away.

All on his own, West is confident that the crooks will return again.

West’s experience was just one of a growing number of burglaries in rural areas of Green County that caused Sheriff Jim Arnott to create a temporary task force to investigate the uptick in crime.

“It was a short term project but we feel it was very successful,” said Arnott told KY3.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that since the burglary task force was set up in mid-January, two dozen suspects were arrested. The unit implemented electronic signs on country roads warning residents of areas affected by thieves, and gathered intelligence on 30 people suspected of being involved in burglaries.

While successful in the short term, Sheriff Arnott tells KY3 that the program was unfortunately discontinued for the county did not have the manpower to keep deputies operating on special assignment. The Sheriff told the station that if voters next month approve a half-percent sales tax for law enforcement needs in Greene County, he will be able to hire more patrol deputies for rural areas of the county.

Task force or not, West is still keeping an eye out and ready to defend his land.

“I have no respect for a thief. I have no respect for them,” West told KY3.  “They work harder at that than they would a job.

“I hope I could catch them one more time – one!”

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

The police chief wants a tax on the citizen to protect them. Typical governmental solution.

A far superior method of assuring a reduction in crime is to simply not hassle the guy who shoots a trespasser. In many ways, the government acts to facilitate crime. If you shoot a criminal, the government destroys your life with lawyers, grand juries, and trials.

And instead of putting up signs warning the populace of criminal activity, they should have put up a sign as a public service to the criminals: “Warning: The people here are armed and authorized to kill you. Enter at your own risk.”

“Authorized to kill, enter at own risk”. Trouble is crooks probably can’t read or understand what they read and the warning signs will be used by some sleezy lawer to persecute the homeowner ’cause the sign proves ‘intent’! After all, the gun grabbers want to make the ‘work place’ safe for the theives!!

A thief is willing to take about anything they did not earn, if they get killed in injured the process, well I say, that’s the chance they took. Any lawful adult ,who does not arm them selves in this crazy age of drugs, unemployment, etc,. is letting themselves and their families down. Few lawful people want to harm someone else, criminals many times do! I feel little sympathy for criminlas stealing others assets!

    Why I Carry a Gun

My old grandpa said to me son,‘ there comes a time in every man’s life
when he stops bustin‘ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s
when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin’.
I don’t carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

    I don‘t carry a gun because I’m paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

    I don‘t carry a gun because I’m evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the
    world.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

    I don‘t carry a gun because I’m angry.
I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating
myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and
not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

    I don‘t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a
    cowboy.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the
    ones they love.

    I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs,

There is a prime example why we should not own guns. What would have happened if that old man accidently pulled the trigger. Is any of the property he has, let alone $3,000 worth, equivilant to a human life? This is why the average citizen shouldn’t own a gun. The old man should have just locked the door, called the police, and let them take what they wanted. They would have left him alone, and no one gets hurt. Things can be replaced, but those 3 young mans lives can’t, just think of the grief their mothers and their family would have to go through if they had gotten shot.

Where I live in deep S Jersey, we only have St Police “protection.” Can you imagine if anarchy breaks out? Thug gangs will be raiding the countryside to support their drug habits, look for food, stealing. It will be serious chaos. You will protect yourself! I’m thinking of starting a neighborhood group to work together. We do have a tigh-knit community of 20 homes located 1 mi from a high crime, low-class, minority (Mexican/Black) town. You have to be careful as, for example, I called a neighbor (young mother/wife) to ask if everything was ok. I saw a car with a round insignia on the door in her yard. It had a spotlight. She said to me that anyone can buy a car with a spotlight. Can you believe it? I said …well anyone can buy that model of a car, but not with an insignia on the door, and not with a spotlight on the hood. Now, I don’t know if she could be trusted if I had to use lethel force to protect my property or family. She would be a possible weak link in a community defense. You need to know who you can trust without any doubt.

If a thief approached me with a crowbar or screwdriver I would perceive it as weapon and would be in fear for my life. I would act in accordance with that threat. It’s actually been over with for quite a lot of years now, but you’ve been living a fantasy, because they’ve been crushing property rights of owners for many years.

The thing that’s so amazingly odd about Americans is that they will throw their life away ending up dead in a trench for some third world nation, but not their own.

The only logical conclusion is, then why should you get to keep your nation?

Really it’s no big deal to the Lord, but you can lie to yourself all you want to that it is, but the Lord really doesn’t give a hoot about the U.S or any other country for that matter. Just look how many civilizations have come and gone over a few thousand years.

Great point Bryan, It would take quite a while for a deputy to show up, so it’s best Mr. Vance and his neighbors keep an eye out for each other and protect themselves.

Vance West lives on a farm in a remote area of Missouri outside Bois d’Arc, so if voters approve a half-percent sales tax for law enforcement needs in Greene County, the Sheriff says he will be able to hire more patrol deputies for rural areas of the county. However, most of that money would stay in Springfield. From The Springfield News Leader: “The tax, expected to generate about $5 million a year, would allow the county to hire dozens of new deputies, detectives and jail staff, as well as additional prosecutor and juvenile officers”.
