Mega Math Fail: Top Teachers Union Honcho Claims $26,000/Year = $500/Month!

Randi Weingarten heads the 1.4 million member American Federation of Teachers, wielding considerable power and influence from her office in Washington DC.  This morning we learned that she probably failed Math.  From MSNBC’s Morning Joe:

26,000 divided by 12 months equals 2166.66 per month.

Immediately after this exchange, Pat Buchanan asked about the recent study showing the average Wisconsin teacher’s compensation valued at $100,000 per year.  Weingarten chose to dismiss these facts, instead using a broad stroke example of the national average, without addressing the very specific Wisconsin data.

This bright woman can’t even divide by 12 even though they only work 8 months, that’s 3 months off in the summer plus 1 month of days off during the year. Tenure is stupid, it rewards bad teachers and punishes great teachers. How about paying for real performance and firing people that don’t do their jobs?

Once again…this dope don’t get it. (And you can take that in many ways!)
    THE WORDS OF FDR..
“[a] strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to obstruct the operations of government until their demands are satisfied. Such action looking toward the paralysis of government by those who have sworn to support it is unthinkable and intolerable.” In 1943, a New York Supreme Court judge held:
To tolerate or recognize any combination of civil service employees of the government as a labor organization or union is not only incompatible with the spirit of democracy, but inconsistent with every principle upon which our government is founded. Nothing is more dangerous to public welfare than to admit that hired servants of the State can dictate to the government the hours, the wages and conditions under which they will carry on essential services vital to the welfare, safety, and security of the citizen.

Kisha, I homeschooled for 13 plus years. Have 5 children, all are grown with children of their own. It was the best decision I ever made. They are all very successful and I was able to give them a better education than the public schools. It is a challenge, but the payoff is huge. I also homeschooled about 10 other children during that time, so my kids had plenty of socialization and I was able to help families whose parents both worked and they helped with the cost for my children. The public school system has failed for the last 30 or more years and I see it as I deal with the younger workforce each day in my current job. The amount of money that is poured into the system is ridiculous and the return in horrible.

Public schools in Western MD are not all that bad. My daughter graduated with honors and already has quite the head start with her college prereqs. A majority of the problem with public shools is the parents and their lack of attention to what is going on with their kids. My daughter and I would have a discussion every night at dinner and we would discuss her day at school, my day at work, the best thing that happened to us in the day as well as the worst. Too many parents let the schools raise their children and don’t put forth the effort to do ti themselves. Indeed many of the public schools need work but on the other hand, there are some exceptional schools that do exist.

I’m not rich by any standards, including Obama’s, but I realized years ago that public schools worked to undermine the Christian values that my family cherish and as time goes on, it has only gotten much worse. What a disingenuous person! Yesterday Fox revealed Wisconsin teachers were hauling in $25,000.00 for entry level jobs, and $48,651.00 for median level jobs. They also receive excellent benefits, which some say is the reason they are attracted to these state run positions, but I think getting Summers off to work a second job is right up there. That’s what I think. Some teachers have said they value teaching our children, which is what they claim has motivated them to take these positions.

She probably did mispeak, but she didn’t correct it immediately like someone normally would. She left it hanging out there that the average teacher is making $500 a month. People that weren’t paying close enough attention (being the vast majority of liberals/socialists/zombies) and can’t do the math for themselves just come away with the tagline that teachers are being paid $500 a month. It may have initially been an honest bumble, but not correcting it after she said it DOES make her sound like an idiot.

I think my high school teachers started this during my 1967-1969 years at Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School in Baltimore. In fact, I think I set the record for the lowest GPA in history to have graduated. For some reason they wanted me to get out of their school so they decided to let me pass. Things have only gotten worse it does appear. These days a poor student denotes a poor teacher and teachers don’t want that showing up in their files. As one teacher recently stated, “We do what we have to do to protect ourselves, our jobs, our future. Fudging grades to pass an unworthy child will earn me greater reward down the road. However, nobody remembers the teacher who is honest and grades fairly, and therefore it will likely impact me negatively down the road.

Only when an opinion is not based on fact and is logically incoherent is intelligence revealed. Although your sarcasm is appreciated, it is much more effective when it is intellectually accurate. This woman’s avoidance of the facts related to the WI events is due to her desire to reflect a more sympathetic position and she knows the FACT of a $100,000 salary/benefit package does not accomplish this for her so she simply repeats a stat that is more favorable in her opinion, regardless if it does not reflect the situation in WI accurately. That is by definition deception and misleading.

Right Ghost – at raise time I calculate salary plus other compensation for those that work for me. I only present vacation and health insurance, but other companies do it differently. If you are a low wage earner with good insurance, your insurance alone can double your compensation.

Frankly, I’m surprised anyone caught the distinction, although you seem smarter than your average bear, monosyllabically speaking.

Okay. Total compensation. So how is it calculated with these teachers? Does it include sick time? Vacation? Holidays? Funeral leave? Health insurance? Disability insurance? Compensation for continuing education? You don’t know and neither do I. It’s just a number that sounds high. That‘s why it’s being thrown out there.

So do know for a fact that total compensation for teachers in Wisonsin is lower or higher than other teachers in the northeast? Does it rank 22nd in the United States as the salaries evidently do? How does it compare to being a manager at McDonald’s in the same town?

I take it you are in favor of lower teacher compensation, something that would drive good teachers into other fields and leave your kids to be taught not by the best and brightest but by the worst and dumbest. Just what America needs: worse teachers.

Besides this isn’t about the budget, even Shep Smith and Juan Williams of FOX realize that:

I suspect somebody knows, somewhere. The number(s) have to be coming from somewhere, and in the age of information it certainly behooves one not to fudge numbers too much. Honestly though, I haven no idea of total compensation, as you mention. On the other hand, I don‘t think I’ve gone on record against teacher compensation, I’m here strictly in an anti-public union capacity.

“I take it you are in favor of lower teacher compensation,”

And why would you assume that? I’m actually for merit based compensation. It seems absurd to me to reward the highest performing teacher the same as under performing teachers that are in his same pay grade (assuming of course equivalent time in service/tenure). I’m all for rewarding *even more than they are today* highly competent teachers. But I’m also for dropping dead weight and consistently low performing teachers from the employment rolls. My biggest gripe with public unions, other than that it is silly that government employees are unionized against the public, is that there is no incentive whatsoever to not go for broke during negotiations. Private unions have to, at least in theory, not ask for too much for fear of putting the company under. Public unions have no such regulator on their demands.

“Besides this isn’t about the budget, even Shep Smith and Juan Williams of FOX realize that:
      http://www.mediaite.com/tv/shep-smith-pretending-wisconsin-is-about-a-fiscal-crisis-is-malarkey/

Well, a fiscal crisis is present, no matter how you cut it. In Ohio (where I live) a similar battle is going on, and Governor Kasich has had nothing to do with the 8 billion shortfall we need to bridge, and is facing the same exact opposition from out of state, bussed in union thugs. The fact is, we’re simply out of money. Cuts have to be made. If we can make the cuts by having teachers finance a *small* portion of their own retirement program like the rest of us do and NOT lower their salaries, then that seems perfectly acceptable to me. It’s not the only thing to fix the fiscal mess, but there is no “one thing”, rather, a series of cuts is needed across the board. Wisconsin and other states are facing the same piper, and none of us can print our own money. Unions won’t budge, so, well, they have to be neutered. It sounds harsh, but it beats *firing* tons of teachers because the union refuses to reduce benefits, don’t you think?

This is the only voice a worker has to impact real change in their lives if they are being abused by an Employer.

      I QUIT!

You have no right to have a guaranteed job with any employer. If you don’t like the pay, find somewhere else that pays better. If you can’t, educate yourself and find a better paying profession. Or start a business. This notion that a worker needs a voice seems ridiculous to me. The business owner is who has the rights, it’s his building, his product, his idea, his capital and his investment into a certain industry. You, as a worker, are allowed to be in that building in an even exchange for your labor to receive a certain amount of monetary compensation. If you no longer agree to those terms, you are free to leave but you are NOT free to tell that business owner how to run his business.

if i want to pay you $3/hour you either take it and shut up or find another business who’ll pay you more. You do not tell me how much I will exchange your labor for my capital.

my pastor talks about finances and God every January… he talked about a labor study that described three categories of “RICH PEOPLE”.

there were the Glitzie Rich… those athletes, actors, billionaires in the public eye…what everyone thinks about when you say “look at that rich guy”…people making OBSCENE amounts of money, God Bless em….

there were the Real Rich and the Faux Rich….
the REAL rich were those people whose income plus benefits were greater than there expenses, that had a retirement, the house, the car, but didn’t FLAUNT it….they drove a Honda even though they could drive the BMW or Mercedes.
the largest group of REAL rich – the profession that is overwhelmingly OVER represented in the REAL rich… TEACHERS!! (i am one btw and wish i could afford the BMW). they are looked down on by society as a low end quasi profession so they live at or below their means, have cars that aren’t as expensive even as the ones their students drive or student parents drive…live in the neighborhood of their school…have good benefits and retirement

the Faux rich were those people that other people perceived as rich or being in a classically “RICH” profession. these people had the STATUS associated with their profession or career and tried to appear like the Glitzie Rich -super wealthy – class. They lived outside their means – house too big, cars, boats, vacation..etc…
the two groups that were overwhelmingly OVER represented in the FAUX rich class, doctors and lawyers. everyone expects that they are rich because they make a lot of money…but 30% goes to malpractice insurance, 40% to taxes…but they have an image to maintain that society puts on them so they try and live on 100% of their income but are only keeping 30%….

teacher unions like to cry and whine and BMW about low wages and national averages and never talk about health benefits or retirement benefits when bringing up the poor teachers….
well here you go…straight from the horse’s mouth…

teachers in CA make 98% of what their private sector brethren make…not bad seeing as we work 45 days less each year, once you take out holidays and vacation time for the private sector. the average starting salary for a teacher, public or private in CA, hovers around $41K a year – the state mandated a while ago that minimum salary public or private was $32K. the average district pays at least 55% of the cost of health benefits – always the CADILLAC plan option as well – usually about $10K per family with a teacher in it. the district is required by law, since CA opted out of Social Security for teachers, to pay 8.25% to the State Teacher Retirement System – STRS.

So for the AFT idiot that can’t do math….i teach math and science but i could do history or social science better then that idiot….41K pay…10K benefits… 3.5K retirement….total compensation for a CA teacher…. $55K for a college grad at age 24 (average) with NO experience and 18 months of graduate school in a teacher credential program….HOLY HELL BATMAN!!!

After readin all these posts, I‘d have to say that in spite of the progressive education we’ve received, you people are just damn intelligent. I have seen excellent debate with minimally offensive posturing. that being said, guess I’ll throw my illiterate public school thoughts into the mix.

What happened to all the starving kids who rely on taxpayer dollars to eat breakfast and lunch while the WI teachers shut down the schools? Weren’t they blasting high energy german dance music at the state capitol? They really didn’t seem to care about those starving babies eating dog food in the streets. Oh the poor poor children, gimme a break.

Why do people who send their children to private schools have to pay for public schools? I’d say so the teachers union can demand larger salaries and pay higher union dues. Could be wrong, but if you know the job pays sh**ty, don’t go into the field. I think the stat I heard was that 1 in 3 public teachers send their children to private school, may be a higher %. Hmmm… guess their school really sucks. I’m probably rambling.

Were there any civics teachers from the unions there? They should be fired immediately.

And JZS, fyi, you will not find a better place to locate some of the best researchers than here on the blaze. While some of us are hard headed, we will still blow the doors off of the “tell me what to do and what to say” uninformed liberal sheep that you see attending these astroturf rallies. So be warned when you hurl “uneducated” insults at these folks. While you may be able to hide behind that computer monitor and spout off like encinom and beckisnuts, you will not be able to escape from the battlefield of ideals that rages inside of us everyday. No offense to you, I’m sure you have about 10 alias as well and can change your name at will. Best of luck to you as you attempt to slam headfirst into the patriot wall of American resolve.

Weingarten is a walking, talking supporter for the conservative position on this issue. She’s head of a 1.4 million member AFT Union, but obviously wasn’t taught simple arithmetic in school. Reminds me of a sign in the Wisconsin rally…“Sav Are Teachers”. Why should teachers be paid more when they’re obviously not doing their job? These idiots should shut their mouths and go home to study.

Update: The Indiana attorney general’s office has confirmed to Mother Jones that Jeff Cox was terminated Wednesday. The full statement and screen captures of the now-defunct blog are posted here.

On Saturday night, when Mother Jones staffers tweeted a report that riot police might soon sweep demonstrators out of the Wisconsin capitol building—something that didn’t end up happening—one Twitter user sent out a chilling public response: “Use live ammunition.”

From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were “political enemies” and “thugs” who were “physically threatening legally elected officials.” In response to such behavior, he said, “You’re damned right I advocate deadly force.“ He later called me a ”typical leftist,” adding, “liberals hate police.”

Only later did we realize that JCCentCom was a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana.

      Advertise on MotherJones.com

As one of 144 attorneys in that office, Jeff Cox has represented the people of his state for 10 years. And for much of that time, it turns out, he’s vented similar feelings on Twitter and on his blog, Pro Cynic. In his nonpolitical tweets and blog posts, Cox displays a keen litigator’s mind, writing sharply and often wittily on military history and professional basketball. But he evinces contempt for political opponents—from labeling President Obama an “incompetent and treasonous” enemy of the nation to comparing “enviro-Nazis” to Osama bin Laden, likening ex-Labor Secretary Robert Reich and Service Employees International Union members to Nazi “brownshirts” on multiple occasions, and referring to an Indianapolis teen as “a black teenage thug who was (deservedly) beaten up” by local police. A “sensible policy for handling Afghanistan,” he offered, could be summed up as: “KILL! KILL! ANNIHILATE!”

Early Sunday, Mother Jones sent an email to Cox‘s work address at the Indiana attorney general’s office, asking if the Twitter and blog comments were his, and if he could provide context for some of them. He responded shortly after from a personal email address: “For ‘context?’ Or to silence me? All my comments on twitter & my blog are my own and no one else’s. And I can defend them all.

“[Y]ou will probably try to demonize me,” he wrote, “but that comes with the territory.”

To be sure, in the current political climate, partisan rhetoric has run hot online—and the Constitution guarantees everyone’s right to such rhetoric. Nonetheless, a spokesman for the Indiana attorney general’s office, Bryan Corbin, told Mother Jones that Cox’s statements were “inflammatory,“ and he promised ”an immediate review” of the matter. “We do not condone any comments that would threaten or imply violence or intimidation toward anyone,” Corbin added.

The incident seems all the more troubling now that the public-sector union fight playing out in Wisconsin is now headed to other states—including Indiana, where GOP senators Tuesday passed a bill that would abolish collective bargaining for state teachers. (Indiana’s Republican governor walked back his support of the measure Tuesday after taking stock of the opposition.) Cox‘s public writings made it clear that he isn’t a member of a public-service union, and he has no love for those who are.

“Individuals have the First Amendment right to post their own personal views in online forums on their own time,” Corbin wrote to Mother Jones, “but as public servants, state employees also should strive to conduct themselves with professionalism and appropriate decorum in their interactions with the public.” Cox had been contacted by the office, Corbin added: “We have reiterated to the employee the standards of professional conduct expected for all licensed attorneys and for employees of the Indiana Attorney General’s Office. After all the relevant information is obtained, this agency then will determine whether there has been any violation of the personnel handbook.”

In the meantime, we hoped to give Cox a chance to explain his thoughts in greater detail. In his initial email to Mother Jones, Cox had written, “Ask what questions you want & I will do my best to answer. Maybe you’ll learn something. Maybe I’ll learn something.” So we emailed him a list of questions:

What did he mean when he tweeted: “Planned Parenthood could help themselves if the only abortions they performed were retroactive”?

In referring to President Obama, why did he use a George W. Bush line once directed at the Iraqi people: “Your enemy is not surrounding your country, your enemy is ruling your country”?

Were members of the SEIU really like Hitler’s Sturmabteilung, and did he stand by his headline, “Putting the ‘Reich’ in Robert Reich”?

      We never heard back.

Update: In an email to Mother Jones Wednesday afternoon, Indiana AG’s spokesman Bryan Corbin confirmed that Cox had lost his job. The full statement:

Today the Indiana Attorney General’s Office announced that Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Cox is no longer employed by this agency.

The Indiana Attorney General’s Office conducted a thorough and expeditious review after “Mother Jones” magazine today published an article attributing private Twitter postings and private blog postings to Cox.

Civility and courtesy toward all members of the public are very important to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office. We respect individuals’ First Amendment right to express their personal views on private online forums, but as public servants we are held by the public to a higher standard, and we should strive for civility.

Here are the screen captures of Jeff Cox’s tweets and deleted blog.

Don‘t forget the average teacher gets paid a 100k a year to beat it into your child’s head that daddy and mommy are the bad private sector or coroporate worker. Well too many in the cart and not enough pulling is what is happening here. We have public unions telling us we are not paying enough while we loose our businesses and jobs. You should have no problem with this since they spent years teaching you they are the smart ones and poor old teacher has to work 8 months a year for 20 years and spike the retirement at the end of their protected tenure to only go on and get a private sector job for 40 quarters and recieve social security also???? Don’t forget here in Colorado they are promised an 8% increase in pension every year. Even Buffet won’t promise this sort of return. Guess we will have to watch it run out of money and tell the takers to go renogotiate with some of the old politicians that bought their votes.

@ JZS…………Also to point to another inconsistency in your reasoning you state …….I take it you are in favor of lower teacher compensation, something that would drive good teachers into other fields and leave your kids to be taught not by the best and brightest but by the worst and dumbest. Just what America needs: worse teachers. Are you also in favor of lowering physicians compensation so as to drive out our best and brightest physicians?? That’s all America needs worse physicians. You see my friend why your worldview is terribly inconsistent. I know you are for universal health care and that entails capping physicians salaries at an artificial level even though they finish school with the highest amount of debt of ANY profession by far. You state one thing for one situation but you argue against that very principle in another situation.

There are great teachers, but because of the union you have to have a blood relative or a lot of connections to get in. I think that is why private schools do so great. It is made up of all those great teachers that couldn’t get into the union.

Dang, I’ve gotten behind on replying. You guys must be unemployed and/or not have children.

Watchtheotherhand, with regard to capping Doctor’s pay, yes, I don’t favor that. But that’s exactly what insurance companies do, not the government. Let’s say your insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield. Your doctor wants to accept patients who are covered by BCBS because otherwise they lose patients to other doctors who do accept BCBS. For every procedure, every single thing that you walk into a doctors office for, BCBS tells the doctor the exact amount the doctor will recieve from BCBS for that procedure (ever look at those forms you get from the doctor with a couple of thing checked? That form is made by the insurance company, not your doctor). If the doctor charges more, they have to get those extra dollars from the patient.

The insurance companies, not the doctors, decide what the value of their service is and pay accordingly. And, of course, the less insurance companies pay doctors, the more money they make. And BCBS can raise your insurance rates at will and drop you if you are cutting into their bottom line (at least they could before Obama care).

The government isn’t running “death panels”. That your insurance company.

GhostOfJefferson, getting to you. We agree that neither of us knows where this $100,000 number comes from. Maybe from some organization who is motivated to inflate the numbers? I’m sure it includes pension though, sick days, Federal holidays, and who knows what else that none of the rest of us consider part of our salary. It’s just a big number that sounds outrageous to people who are comparing it to the salary they see on their 1040. And I still don’t know how it compares to a McDonalds manager, which is a respectable job but not one that contributes anything to the education of the next generation.

If you are in favor of raising salary and benefits for excellent teachers, then I’m with you on that. I’d like to hear your ideas about how that determination is made though. Want to give your opinions on how that should done?

I have the greatest admiration for teachers and believe that those teaching the next generation of Americans deserve more than they are getting.

My husband did 20 years in the Navy, serving his country, for his “modest” retirement of about $1386 a month. That translates to $16,638 a year. And if he did a bad job, they could have gotten rid of him. We can’t get rid of a tenured teacher. I know, because one mentally abused my child, was caught in the act by my mother, and they just moved us to a new school. She stayed, teaching special needs children who can’t tell on her.

@ SLEEZY…………..If i wasn’t in debt up to my eye balls over 300,000 for medical education alone not to mention a house mortgage and a building mortgage for my practice and then another loan to buy the practice from the previous practitioner. I am afraid your stereotype of doctors being wealthy vanished a long time ago. Why do you think there is a crisis in this country in regard to the shortage of people going into medicine? Because the huge debt with regard to shrinking salary is making it impossible for many to keep their doors open. Many physicians go “naked” because they cannot afford to buy malpractice insurance. So I can’t tell whether your apology was sincere or simply mocking, I hope the former rather than the latter, but you obviously don’t know what many young physicians face these days. I can tell you this much. When you take my salary minus what my loan payments are plus the “benefits” I have to pay for out of pocket. I make less than what some of the upper teachers make in WI. And I am pretty sure my education was more quantity wise than theirs.
