Are You Ready for Mega-Pastor Joel Osteen‘s New Primetime ’Reality’ Show?

Joel Osteen to Get Prime time Show With Producer Mark Burnett

More than 10 million viewers tune in each week to mega-Pastor Joel Osteen’s television broadcast. And now, even more people may watching the faith leader, as a primetime television series is in the works.

On Tuesday, TMZ reported that Osteen, the pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston Texas, will be teaming up with “Survivor” producer Mark Burnett for a prime-time network television show in 2012. According to the Houston Chronicle, a spokesperson for the church has confirmed that a program is currently in development.

Joel Osteen to Get Prime time Show With Producer Mark Burnett

Burnett told TMZ that the show will center upon ordinary people giving up several days or longer to go on a “mission” with the faith leader. While this may conjure images of Osteen and company traveling abroad to partake in missionary activities, the trips will apparently be confined to the United States.

According to Don Iloff, a spokesperson for Lakewood and the pastor’s brother-in-law, “just about every studio in Hollywood” has pitched ideas to the Osteens, but, to date, they have declined. But Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, have apparently become friends with the Osteen family.

Joel and his wife Victoria have been to the producer’s home and vice-versa. And the Burnetts, who are also Christians, have also visited Lakewood. As a result, the family likely trusts the famed producer to portray Osteen and his ministry in a palatable light.

At the moment the show has no name and has no official network secured, as it is in its early-planning states. The Osteens, as the Chronicle reports, are hoping that they will be able to create “uplifting, positive programming” that will be family-friendly.

Considering Burnett‘s credentials and Osteen’s popularity, there should be little issue finding a home for the show.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 “3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

This is the word of God. When I see stories like this, I‘m very skeptical about what a man’s motives are….Is he serving God or is he serving his own interests by using his ministry to seek fame and fortune?? Not by a man’s words, but through his works you shall know him.

let’s just ask Olsteen about sin.

I’ve never heard him mention it. No one here needs to criticize Joel- let him convict himself.

Jesus and Paul taught us to beware of false teachers…BEWARE, they said.

Slow down! I don’t subscribe to his particular brand of Christianity, but I‘ve haven’t seen anything from him that would classify him as sleazy. Seems like a decent guy preaching some vanilla gospel. If people find value in that, go for it. There’s plenty of others I would call sleazy. Joel Osteen is not one of them.

The prosperity gospel is indeed a problem but also his unwillingness to let the word “sin” approach his lips. He has refused to warn that Beck is not a Christian. Notice in the background while he is speaking on TV is not a cross or other Christian symbology but a massive globe. It is easier to have a large church if you jettison the hard teachings of sin, the need for redemption and the need to repent. He is just one of many who seems to tolerate an idea of relative salvation. This means that one can be comfortable with their relationship with God as long as they are really sure there are many others much worse. Their only hope of salvation is that God grades on a curve.

Hmm, it seems to me he is just preaching that God Loves us and we should trust God in all things. He is not here to teach all things, he is just the messenger to encourage people to come to God, when they do he says to find a church. That is where they would learn more about Satan etc. Think of it like kindergarten. Why would you teach EVERYTHING to a kindergartener? Even in the Bible it talks about starting on milk (in learning about Jesus).

Why if one knew NOTHING about God or Jesus would you want to scare them with fire and brimstone? That would turn them away, God is a God of love. I am Catholic and study the Bible and my faith but I applaud anyone who brings people to the Lord.

I have watched him until I realized he is presenting only one side of the Bible. What I take away from his sermons is what can God do for you. It seems to be a positive thinking, Tony Robbins type message. Never a message on sin and the cross. He does not encourage people to repent and turn away from their sin. No wonder people are flocking to his church. No accountabilty. When I saw him on Larry King, he had a hard time saying Jesus is the only way. Given these facts, I have to wonder if he is one of the false preachers the Bible speaks of in the last days? The Bible says even the elect will be fooled. Satan comes as an angel of light. We need to be careful who we listen to.

Olsteen is Christianity Lite, and believes that Mormons are Christians. Maybe if he did some research and found out that the current lds cult is not Christians at least since the alteration of the book of mormon in 1837. If you read the original book of mormon just maybe, maybe he could consider them Christians, but not since the infiltration of masons like brigham young and others.

You’re all just chapped because he speaks of personal responsibility and religion. He tells you to go and find a bible based church to be a part of, NOT come to mine and mine only. I bet you all followed Benny Hin and the Bakers and so you assume all are the same.

Typically uninformed and closed minded. He does so well because he preaches about a God that is forgiving, loving and just; NOT fire and brimstone all the time let alone killing in His [God's] name. He has NEVER said that the only way to be saved and if you say he has you are a liar.

He speaks positively is that such a problem? The problem everyone has with him is that he walks his talk…nobody can find anything bad on him so they CREATE IT to make themselves feel better. I expected better from people on a conservative leaning site….how disappointing.

So do you think the lives saved and changed by this ministry means nothing? Just what gives you insight in to this revelation are you a man of GOD speaking from the Holy Spirit no you are far from GOD and your words betray your true intent. Are so gifted you can discern spirits from your TV or computer fantastic could you please let us know who you see as a preacher that you do find worthy of your praises?

I am do not inclined to Joel’s style of preaching on a daily basis it does not seem to be covering other important subjects pertaining to following the LORD for the last days. I enjoyed and learned much from his father and from him too, I do not see anything evil or dirty the opposite is true but there is a lot of milk being served and we need meat for the coming storms. Lakewood church is far from a cult, though you may know 1st hand about cults for some reason.

You would be wise to shut your mouth and repent take it from one that learned the hard way if you don’t like or trust a preacher move on, in your case I really don’t know if you are a true Christian by your hateful ungodly words but you are treading on thin ice either way.

      WSGAC and Joe1234,
No one lives in or experiences consciousness in Hell. Ecclesiastes 9:5,10

“Much confusion and misunderstandings has been caused through the early translators of the Bible persistently rendering the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades and Gehenna by the (English) word Hell. The simple transliteration of these words by the translators of the revised editions of the Bible has not sufficed to appreciably clear up this confusion and misconception”. – The Encyclopedia Americana 1942

The Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades and Gehenna mean the Grave, Pit. Nothing more. So if a person dies and is in Sheol, this simply means he is dead, a dead soul, unconscious and aware of nothing until the time of his being resurrected back to life in God’s Kingdom. So the word “Hell” is not an appropriate word not is it accurate for true Christians to use.

The guy is very shy and doesn’t do very good in interviews. This kept him from preaching until his dad died and he felt he was called to do his work. Many of you guys are the same way or you wouldn’t be venting from behind the internet mask. You do not know what God has in store for this man. I don’t watch him either but I do know a little about him and do not see the problem you people some how see with him trying to put a Christian based TV show on the air. Jesus Forbids Sectarianism

38 Now John answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40 For he who is not against us is on our[c] side. 41 For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
      Jesus Warns of Offenses

While I am not a ‘fan’ of Osteen’s softer-than-I’d-like stance, I have absolutely no right to judge him outside of my own personal choices. My personal choice is to not watch him or listen to pod casts by him because his stance is indeed weaker than I prefer. I do respect Osteen though, because he does indeed point his listeners to God – despite my disagreements with his doctrinal positions. In response to one of the comments below, the absence of “one single cross” in the background behind him and the presence of a globe is actually a good thing. A cross in a church is simply an icon or representative that illustrates the belief that Jesus died on a cross to save sinners like myself. While I have crosses inked on my body and wear a cross inside my shirt daily, I don’t believe they save me. They do daily REMIND me of the incredible pain and suffering Jesus endured because of MY depravity. These crosses of mine make me no better than Adolph Hitler. I sin daily, and because of those sins, nails were violently pounded in Jesus’ hands and held Him to the cross so that I can someday enjoy face-to-face fellowship with God and Jesus in Heaven. Like the Apostle Paul, I am “chiefest” of sinners and I hate it that I disappoint God daily. The cross absolutely does NOT save me. GRACE afforded me through the blood of Jesus saved and saves me. Everyone across the globe deserves Jesus and Salvation, no matter where they live. Jesus loves EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE! Selah.

      Beware of false prophets…
I would not classify Olsteen’s church a “cult”, but more of a large group of shallow, self-centered people who believe that God will make them RICH and FAMOUS if they follow Olsteen’s way. The only one getting rich and famous is Olsteen by preaching only “happy, happy, happy” giberish. True JOY is not always obtained through popularity, happy thoughts and material wealth. If you want to see someone who realized real, true and deep joy, read about Mother Teresa.

As a born and raised evangelical protestant, who has converted to Catholicism, I have seen the good and the bad of mega-chucrh religion. It is sooooo easy to get caught up in the wave of emotions and good feelings from revivalist style preaching. But it is most often just like going to a pep rally or exciting football game. Depsite its many flaws (because all humans are flawed), the Catholic Church still embodies the original Christian movement as taught by CHrist to the apostles. I suggest everyone watch Father Robert Barron’s recently released amazing series on the church simply titled Catholicism. http://www.wordonfire.org

I know this will get a lot of negative replys, but please be kind and remember we are all brothers and sisters of Christ here to love each other.

I don‘t see a lot of difference between Joel Osteen’s message and the message of ‘The Secret’, which Oprah touted a few years back. Of course, that ultimately led to those sweat lodge deaths in Az. ‘Name it and claim it- prosperity gospel’ leaders do not want to muddle your mind with hard truths and facts. The power of positive thinking (with zero negativity and confrontation) with Jesus as your friend/guide is all you need to succeed and be happy in life. The salvation message is simple, but not THAT simple. Osteen, IMO, panders to the collective just like social justice advocates do. Neither will end well. Stand by for scandals.

@wsgac….”to talk about hell is to stand for the truth of the gospel?LOL” Just what is the name of heaven do you think that believing and accepting the death, burial and resurection of Jesus Christ, the only Son of God as a propitiation for our sins saved us from? Born again Christians know what it saved them from……eternal hell.

Osteen is a snake oil salesman, motivational speaker at best under the guise of the Gospel. He is a false teacher leading many astray not preaching about sin or the Gospel. I usually don‘t prefer Wiki and certainly didn’t use it to formulate my opinion. (Three chapters into one of his books was sufficient for me.) Essentially his message is……if you pray right, you can have anything you want. If you don’t get it, you must not be praying right. I read a part of this book as I was visiting & helping a dear, very Godly woman who had progressed M.S. She was a blessing to all who know her up until her untimely death. I have no doubt she prayed in the Spirit as did so many who knew her (including myself). Osteen would have us believe she wasn‘t miraculously cured because she didn’t pray right. He is a fraud and an embarrassment to Christ. He took over his father’s ministry and has proven that he was more interested in media/television and FAME than truly leading people to the True and Living God. May God have mercy on his soul.

You do know Glenn Beck is Mormon, right?
The whole religion is founded on the idea that Orthodox Christian Theology is totally wrong. He lets slip Mormon ideas all the time. On his radio show a while back, he was talking about “Universal Salvation was Satan’s idea”, and “God choose Jesus’s plan instead.” Mormons teach that Jesus and Satan were brothers with competing plans for salvation, not Christians.
Not that any of that means there’s something wrong with Mr. Beck and that he’s not a savvy political commentator. I just find it ironic you‘re throwing out that he doesn’t teach the Gospel on a website from a man who doesn’t teach the Gospel.

@ Erluti: There it goes again, another non-Mormon saying what Mormons believe. We belive that God created all his children including Satan, and gave them freedom to choose good or evil. We believe that only one plan was offered and that Jesus Christ was chosen to be the Savior of the world. Satan rebelled because he thought he had a better idea and wanted God’s power and glory. He was cast out for his rebellion. Next time you think you know what Mormons believe, ask one so you don’t get it wrong again.

All Beck says is we need to get back to God and faith, which is true. Beck is honest about what he believes and thinks but does not tell you that you must believe the same thing. I have seen Osteen a few times on TV and believe he is a phony. I don’t know tons about him but he does not seem to preach the whole gospel and is very PC. @agameofthrones … Satan was never a child of God, anyone who reads the Bible in whole and not cherry picking, knows that he was a created angel. Mormonism is Smithian, not Christian and the highest crime it commits is influencing their members to distrust the Bible in order to replace God’s Word with Joseph Smith’s fairy tales and masonic rituals. Both mormonism and Satan deceive and lie with same promises of becoming a god by eating bad fruit. It is in your best interest should you want to really know the truth about mormonism by visiting utlm.org to get the historical facts and watch Heart of the Matter online with Shawn McCraney (one in thousands who exchanged that cult for spiritual freedom) before repeating canned falsehoods.

@RRFlyer…Your message is typical of someone who is very ignorant to label someone a “liberal” when you know nothing of this person. Perhaps you should pay attention to other comments I‘ve made on this site and you’ll get a better clue of my political leanings.

As far as my comment on Christianity, I stand by it and here’s why. When I meet evangelical christians, I always ask what church they’d attend if they moved to a different city. The almost universal response is, “I’d find a church I would feel comfortable in.” Is this, or something like this, your answer as well? What I hear is, “I haven’t found a church where they tell me what I want to hear.” Here in my town of Austin, Texas, there is an “evangelical church” which preaches that it’s OK to be gay because God made you that way. So gay people go there. There is another which helps provide funds to Planned Parenthood because they think they are doing God’s work. So abortionists go there. I don’t mean to offend you. I truly believe you when you tell me you are a Christian. I’m just saying that, as a whole, evangelican Christianism is nothing more than relative Christianism.

My answer to finding a church in a new town would best to find a Bible-believing, Bible-following church who is truly seeking God’s will and to glorify Him in all they do. A church who is giving their best attempt to follow the New Testament example of the early and first worshippers of Christ. One who places God first in their worship and first for their guidance and direction. To find such a church, I would seek suggestions from the pastors of the church I currently attend, from the churches of well-regarded pastors who I follow in other cities and, most importantly, pray for direction from the Holy Spirit.

      @ JL

My critique of Osteen was based on my experience of reading a few chapters of one of his books and scanning the remainding chapters, watching a few of his “sermons” and seeing him in a few interviews. How do you know any other critiques weren’t based on experience? What is your experience and fact of why you like this guy? I have no problem with Osteen giving you the “feel good” you are looking for from a motivational speaker. Good for you…..if you are motivated by his speaking in a secular, unchurched forum. My problem is that he speaks in a church as a preacher.

We need God’s whole truth……especially in today’s narcissistic society that is America……not just cherry-picking the parts of the Bible that we like best. True and genuine worship is God-focused, not me-focused. It isn’t about what we get from it or if we like the music……it is about glorifying God for what He has done for us. The question should be…..is this church, preacher, music bringing glory to God……..not do I like it, does it make me feel good and is the music contemporary or traditional?

We ARE becoming like the Babylonians in America. As you find the popular Babylonian saying quoted in Isaiah 47:8 & 10, “I am and there is none besides me”. The Babylonians became their very own God. Does the American saying “it’s all about me” sound familiar?

copatriots…this is precisely my point about relativism. You claim you seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. If I told you the Holy Spirit lead me to a Catholic Church, what would you say? Who are we to say those in that “gay church” (for lack of a better term), didn’t? I realize I‘m using extremes so let’s go to less extremes. Some Christians believe in the holy trinity and others belive it is not a trinity but a Fater, a Son, and a Holy Spirit. Who is wrong if they both came to that conclusion “through the power of the Holy Spirit”. Frankly, and again I mean no offense, I find it arrogant of one who belives the Holy Spirit would guide them. I feel many of us who feel are being guided by the Holy Spirit are actually guided by satan and we don’t even know it.

You seek guidance, as do I and many others. Yet this guidance all lead us in different directions. Someone has to be right. Who is it? We pray, we read, we study and we come to a conclusion. You and I don’t see eye to eye but I doubt that on judgement day, our theological differences is what will tip the scale one way or the other.

But if it does, I’m sure it will be YOU who burns for eternity in the lake of fire. I’m kidding obviously…

Zorro, I do appreciate your post. My answer to you (as well as JL and Truth on page 2) was based on how I would find a church in a different city. My experience is based on my history of my attempt of seeking God and to glorify Him. In another post, I suggested my reading of His word and my years of study of it combined with prayer and seeking the Holy Spirit. PLEASE do not take this as any type of superiority…….of which I have NONE. It was only a meager attempt to explain I wasn‘t speaking from something that I haven’t spent years studying. My issue is those who are truly seeking Him who get misled by false teachers. At some point, you and I would agree on a false teacher…..maybe Jeremiah Wright for example.

Oh and please don’t even joke about burning in a lake of fire. Praise the Lord, I am saved. My heart breaks when I think of anyone being damned to eternal hell. As a pastor, Osteen admittedly doesn’t present hell or consequences of sin much less want to offend anyone with the only path to salvation. In doing so, he misleads his congregants and followers. And that makes me sad beyond belief!

      @ Zorro

Twice now, I have tried a final response to you and twice it has landed on Page 9. :-) If you are interested, you may find it there. Either way, may God richly bless you!

I like him too. The criticism of him is why more people don’t go to church-judgment and hypocrisy.
