Megachurch Pastor & Televangelist Creflo Dollar Arrested After Allegedly ‘Getting Physical’ With Teen Daughter

ATLANTA (AP) — Megachurch pastor and televangelist Creflo Dollar — who has drawn scrutiny for his flashy lifestyle and preaching that prosperity is good — was arrested early Friday after authorities say he slightly hurt his 15-year-old daughter in a fight at his metro Atlanta home.

Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of domestic violence at the home in unincorporated Fayette County around 1 a.m., said investigator Brent Rowan. The pastor and his daughter were arguing over whether she could go to a party when Dollar “got physical” with her, leaving her with “superficial injuries,” Rowan said.

The 15-year-old was the one who called authorities, and her 19-year-old sister corroborated the story, Rowan said.

Dollar faces misdemeanor charges of simple battery and cruelty to children. He bonded out of Fayette County jail Friday morning.

Editor’s note: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the daughter claims her father “grabbed her by the throat…pushed her to the ground…then beat her with his shoe.

“As a father I love my children and I always have their best interest at heart at all times, and I would never use my hand to ever cause bodily harm to my children,” Dollar said in a statement released by his lawyer Nikki Bonner. “The facts in this case will be handled privately to further protect my children. My family thanks you for your prayers and continued support.”

Dollar will make no further comments since he’s involved in the ongoing criminal matter, but he is expected to preach Sunday, Bonner said.

The 50-year-old leads the Creflo Dollar Ministries and is the pastor for World Changers Church International in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, which serves nearly 30,000 members, according to the church’s website. World Changers Church-New York hosts over 6,000 worshippers each week, the website says. Four satellite churches are located in Georgia along with others in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Washington, Cleveland, Dallas and Houston.

He and his wife Taffi, a co-pastor at the church, have five children, according to the website.

Dollar is a native of College Park and says he received a vision for World Changers Ministries Christian Center in 1986. He held the first service, in front of only eight people, in the cafeteria of Kathleen Mitchell Elementary School in College Park, the website says.

His ministry grew quickly, moved into a modest-sized chapel and was renamed World Changers Church International. The church moved into its present location, an 8,500-seat sanctuary called the World Dome, on Dec. 24, 1995.

Dollar said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press that he renounced his salary from the church, and his income only comes from personal investments, including a real estate residential property business and horse breeding company called Dollar Ranch. He’s published more than 30 books, focusing mostly on family and life issues, including debt management.

“I stopped taking a salary,” he said. “But no one ask the question, `Where are you getting your money from?’ Well, I have boxes of invitations to speak. At first, I was glad to preach for anyone. What I didn’t know was I received a love offering for preaching. Back then, it was for $25 bucks. But over the years, people began to appreciate what I was bringing to them.”

He said in the interview that he sometimes got up to $100,000 for a single appearance on his packed schedule of speaking engagements.

“That tells you where my money comes from,” he said.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches. Ministers in this tradition often hold up their own wealth as evidence that the teaching works.

“When most people hear prosperity, they hear money,” he said in the 2007 interview. “They’re are not incorrect but are incomplete. When I define prosperity, I define it from a biblical point. If you go into the Hebrew version of the Bible, prosperity is define as peace, wholeness and continuing well being.”

While Dollar may seem like a contrived name for a man who preaches the prosperity gospel, Dollar is named after his father, Creflo Dollar Sr.

“If I was on the other side and heard some preacher with the name Rev. Dollar, I would probably have some issues as well. It becomes a responsibility,” he said in the 2007 interview. “God must’ve had a sense of humor giving it to me.”

Dollar, who’s known for his pinstriped suits and charismatic sermons, has written several books offering followers his advice on how to get out of debt and take lessons from the Bible in building wealth so they can better live as Christians.

“True prosperity is measured not by what you take out of the Book and how use what you’ve received to benefit mankind. It’s having wealth, health, and the wisdom to do as God commands,” he wrote in his 1999 book, “Total Life Prosperity: 14 Practical Steps to Receiving God’s Full Blessing.”

In another passage, he promises readers: “No longer do poverty, sickness, addiction, and fear have free course to rule and reign in your life. You no longer have to allow the circumstances of marital discord, rebellious children, or unemployment to dominate your household.”

Long and Dollar were among six televangelists investigated by Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley from 2007 to 2010, following questions about personal use of church-owned airplanes, luxury homes and credit cards by megachurch pastors and their families. The report did not find any definitive wrongdoing, but it expressed concern about the lack of financial oversight at such large ministries.

That wasn‘t Dollar’s only brush with controversy.

When former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield filed for divorce in 1999, Dollar refused to give a court-ordered statement in the case about how much money Holyfield had given to the church. Janice Holyfield’s lawyer said he had determined that Holyfield gave $403,000 to the church in 1998, and donated $3.9 million in the 60 days before the ex-champ filed for divorce in March 1999.

Dollar’s lawyer said he should not be required to testify because of the separation of church and state, pastor-parishioner privilege and several state and biblical laws. Dollar vowed in sermons at the time not to release the information because he didn’t want to facilitate a divorce.

Dollar was found in contempt of court, but he was not punished because the Holyfields ended up reaching a settlement, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported at the time.

In December 1999, 100 Fulton County police officers were scolded by the county’s ethics board for accepting $ 1,000 apiece from Dollar, who said he wanted to recognize their service, the newspaper reported at the time. But the gesture came a month after two traffic tickets Dollar had received were downgraded to warnings.

Physical violence between famly members is called Domestic Violence and any visible signs of harm means arrest by responding officer. An interesting note: If he had visible signs of harm then she would have been arrested and taken to the juvenile facility.

Different kids respond to different things.
Some will respond to a “time-out”.
      Some to a grounding.
Others obey if you threaten to take away their Nintendo or phone…

You have to figure out what makes YOUR child tick.

What happened to the days when the police backed the parents? Or did they actually see true evidence of a beating? We probably won‘t know since they wouldn’t release photos of a minor.

What is it about Christianity that makes those pastors or priests try to strangle their children or beat them? Or have sex with minors or reenact the lynching of blacks as people as Christians KKK members actually did in the 50′s? Or love handling snake or having sex outside of marriage? What is it about Christianity that leads to the KKK mentality? Why do do those who lead Christian flocks have so much hatred in their hearts for others of a different religion and an uncontrollable lust to have sex with children?

Muslims and Buddists don’t act this way. Is there some fundamental flaw in the Christian religion that causes members of that sect to beat and kill and violate the most innocent? What is it about the Christian religion that causes it’s members to behave so reprehensibly?

I don’t have any problem with Christianity, but what is it that drives their members to commit such horrible crimes?

I have two daughters that were completely different – one wouldn‘t cross the street if she wasn’t inside the crosswalk lines and if I had to speak harshly to her for discipline she would break down in tears of contrition. Then there was the other one…..wooden spoon on her chubby little toddler leg was the method of choice and even then she’d look at me with defiance. When this one was in 3rd grade and I disciplined her she told me that she was going to tell her teacher and put me in jail! I told her that was fine and she would spend a week in Child Protective Services if I was in jail. I told her to enjoy her time there and I would see her when she got out….Needless to say she didn’t do it and has actually turned out to be one very special person! I can definitely see how this situation could have happened to Creflo and I pray for Wisdom and Comfort for him and his family and that this little snotty teenager will wake up and see what she is doing to her family.

This is what religion does to your mind.

Look at the majority of these posts, defending the father and demonizing the child.

I’m sure if this was a well known Muslim/Atheist parent they would be saying how cruel the parent was, and that this is what happens when they raise their children without Jesus in their life.

Had he smacked her behind when she was younger, he probably wouldn’t have a problem now. /and for all you bleeding hearts who refuse to be the authority in your homes – the quickest way to the minds of children can many times be through the back side.

We have become a discipline lacking society. I mouthed off to my mother ONCE in my life – my dad smacked me in the mouth…I learned quickly. I said a cuss word ONCE in my life – my mother washed my mouth out with soap – I learned quickly. My Parents had high standards and I am thankful that they did and enforced them. I was not abused or degraded. I degraded the family authority and was reprimanded accordingly.

Children obey your parents for this is right.

And again for all you bleeding hearts – there is right and wrong – good and bad – pick a side

I for one, am sick of smart mouthed, disrespectful , entitled kids.

I for one am sick parents who won’t be the adults to guide their children

Kids live up to the standards they are faced with – time to raise the standards – in our families, schools and society.

progressives have made it impossible to disipline your children…all the little darlings have to do is call the police and daddy is hauled off to jail…so now we have kids who know they can do as they please…like being 15 yrs old and walking out of the house to a party at 1 am…and parents cant do a dam thing…but if she od,s or gets raped ,,the police and judges and social workers and all the public servants will ask….what was your daughter doing out so late at nite…we must reclaim not only our country from these retards,,we must reclaim our families…

So you can‘t ’make‘ them do what you say because then it’s abuse, but if they are found drinking the courts want to punish the parents because they didn’t stop them. You can’t win. This country and given over control of the family to the children!

Let me get this straight… black panthers can get away with intimidation at voting locations, holder gets away with giving controlled automatic weapons to criminals, obama is holding court with Al Queda in our White House? Yet Creflo is arrested for disciplining his “under age minor” daughter? All of these issues are subject to laws but they are being selectively applied? It’s way past time to do something. Creflo needs to sue the police and with his finances take them to the supreme court and set a precedent. It’s far past time folks. Let support him and push back the liberal agenda!

This fits with the lack of respect that is exhibited by teens everwhere for adults. If I were a cop called to investigate I would have to take the teen aside and explain the facts of life and that she is not old enough to say where she goes and who she hangs out with. Sounds like she needs to get a job.

      @KayDeeBeau
Sounds like you & I were raised in the same kind of household! I learned those lessons early… I think Rev. Dollar did his 15 year old a favor by taking his shoe to her behind…My mom had a penchant for grabbing me by my long hair; had it not been there, who know‘s what she would’ve grabbed!! Kids are so dang spoiled these days, I’m happy to see a Dad lay the law down. Leave it to the Family to handle.

If your 15 yr old daughter was talking about going to a party at 1 a.m., what would you do? I know what I’d do, and I can guarantee you, she would have never made it to her cell phone to dial 911.

Agree with you Applebite. I went thru this back in the early 90′s with my kids. Yep, they think they can just call the law, cause it’s posted all over the public schools!! The child can’t think past tomorrows lunch, much less what it all means to the family in the future. Her goose should be super cooked for a bout 6 months…no cell phone, no internet, no dvd, no radio, no NOTHING….
Let’s see how comfy we can make our little princess!!!

Yeah, I side with the father, preacher or not, side with the discipline keeping 15 year old at home at 1 am instead of a party!!

When she was a young teenager my daughter threatened to call CPS over not getting her way over something I had said *NO* to.
    .
I told her to go ahead but between the time she made that call and the time CPS arrived I would do to her everything that she would have to had lied about before that call. I also told her to pack anything she cherished because if the State took her she then belonged to them and would not be coming home.
    She never made that call.

I do not like the police and Child Services getting involved in private family matters unless real injury is involve, not minor childhood misbehavior.

Mom you’re absolutely right. Tough love is what a parent does if they really want to protect their kids and when the state won’t allow parents to do their job, then the kid needs to know they’ll choose the nanny state for shelter, food, and raising if my rules are too hard. I told mine at 14 to move out while he still knew everything. He stayed.

When parents can‘t even have a say with their child’s mischief….You folk ready to turn back the hands of time yet? Government should never have a say in a family’s personal life, unless there’s verifiable proof that there was abuse involved. For all we know, she scratched herself before calling the police.

I’m disappointed Blaze, this headline shows that you are no different than CNN or MSNBC. Making headlines that do not tell the story. Considering most people will read headlines and not the story, people will automatically assume this preacher was in the wrong. This isn’t the case, why not have a headline, “Preacher arrested for not letting daughter go to a party”, that would bring in just as many readers. Spare the Rod Spoil the Child…Kids should not be able to call the police on parents for ‘superficial’ wounds and have the father arrested. If I tell my daughter no she can’t, she better not. I won’t beat her but I will grab her and set her straight.

Yea…having said that–He has every right to discipline his child and corporal punishment too!
Is that against the law now days? Oh trust me–after putting me through something like this for grabbing a wrist??! My child would be sleeping on the floor with nothing in her room and that includes the door (I would take it off too). Parents need to STOP spoiling kids! The more “stuff” you give them the more miserable they will be. We have forgotten in this country that our life is not about “stuff” and where is her respect for her dad?? Is she “honoring” her father? Creflo has some serious work to do. Better stay at home more and stop chasing MONEY so much-you are teaching your child that MONEY is ALL that matters.

In the State of Florida in the 90′s, (I‘m sure it’s still the same) a parent was not allowed by law to leave any “marks” on the child anywhere, arms, legs, face, rear end…not one mark, or you could be charged with abuse, and just like the good pastor, thrown in jail because a 15 year old was pissed and called 911.

This crap has got to stop.

I disagree with preaching the Prosperity Gospel. It is wrong…But if he wants to bust his little darling daughter’s a@@ then what does the State have to do with that? Incredible!!! If you cannot correct your children then they will end up in PRISON sooner or later. The State has intruded on his rights! 15 years ols and living under his roof…a long as he does not kill her or damage her for life what the hell does the State even give a damn…Oh wait, I know…Job justification in CPS!
