Megyn Kelly: Asking Marines to Disarm Is Like Saying ‘We Don’t Trust You Not to Shoot Defense Secretary’

On Wednesday The Blaze reported on an Afghan driver who caught himself ablaze after crashing a stolen truck at Camp Bastion — a British air field — in Afghanistan, just as U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s plane was landing nearby.

No one in Panetta’s party was hurt, but the bizarre incident prompted some nervous reactions — namely, Marines and other troops gathered in a tent at Camp Leatherneck to hear Panetta speak were abruptly asked to disarm.

In response to this highly unusual, and, to many, insulting event, Fox News host Megyn Kelly said the incident raised “troubling questions about whether our leaders trust our troops” and asked if a message was being sent that they are not even trusted “not to shoot” Leon Panetta.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Cowan and Fox contributor Geraldo Rivera were among the guests present to discuss the issue.

“Allegedly, their commanding general is the one that made that decision,” Lt. Col. Cowan said. “I’ve looked at his record, he has a lot of time in combat, a lot of time in Iraq, time in Afghanistan, he himself knows that our men and women walking around over there with their weapons do not just put them down somewhere, asking them to leave their weapons at the front door is like asking them to leave their right arm at the front door.”

For his part, Rivera said there is some “real disillusionment with the mission now in light of the Koran burning and the staff sergeant’s massacre.”

He posited that “rumblings of discontent” and “troubles” surrounding the mission are what prompted the decision. “Why even take a chance in light of these extraordinary and extremely depressing events?” Geraldo asked.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t trust Marines,” Kelly responded.

“If that’s really what’s going on, they don’t trust the Marines, that’s a big deal, Geraldo because the military is coming out and saying it wasn’t about that massacre, by that one guy, and it wasn’t even about the threat that…Panetta faced at the airport, when he landed in Afghanistan, they say it’s just because we wanted it to be an even deal. Afghans don’t have their weapons, neither do the Marines.”

She concluded by asking if leaders are sending troops the message that: “We don’t even trust you anymore. We don’t trust you not to shoot the Defense Secretary’?”

Let’s see… how would one go about precipitating a hasty withdrawl? How about setting up an obviously mentally unstable person in a position and in a mindset to cause a significant international incident.

Too convenient not to be a false flag operation.

@Professor — the alleged shooter is an Army Soldier not a Marine.

Since we are in the deference business, make the Afghan soldiers feel equal to the Marines they plan on killing at the PX or in their sleep the next opportunity. You cannot have a PC war. The Afghan soldiers are not trustworthy — so say it! Stop pretending it is otherwise — it gets our guys killed when the PC police come out w/garbage like this!

The funny thing about folks like you is that we had to escort them in Iraq to ensure they did not get killed while they write their hate-filled anti-American “articles” as journalists or as NGO reps. You can tell who they are with their forced smiles as I briefed them on the rules. I find them reprehensible and disgusting, but as a professional soldier I value their lives as much as any other civilian we protected. I also value your right to be a vile and disgusting dusty, crusty, barren and bitter woman that you are and where no man has gone before nor ever will. This is a false issue. Guns aren’t allowed in courthouses. Guns aren’t allowed into the White House, other Federal buildings, State Capitols (at least not where I live) or or onto airplanes. Does that have anything to do with “trusting Americans?” No, this is only a recognition that there might be a crazy person anywhere including someone in uniform. Would having metal detectors at Columbine, and not allowing guns mean they didn’t trust the students? Does having a prohibition against guns and metal detectors anywhere mean you don’t trust everyone? No, it is simply an acknowledgment that there are some crazy people out there.

If you want examples of crazy people shooting whomever they can kill, those are found easily enough in history.

This is a false issue. Guns aren’t allowed in courthouses.
Yes they are. The Police that work in the courthouse are all armed. That is how Brian Nichols got a gun in the courthouse after he knock down a female officer and took it. He then went in the court room and shot the judge and a court reporter.
      http://crime.about.com/od/current/a/brian_nichols.htm

Guns aren’t allowed into the White House, other Federal buildings, State Capitols (at least not where I live) or or onto airplanes.
Yes they are. They are on the Secret Service, Police Officers working at the building, and Federal Air Marshals all have guns in these situations.

Does that have anything to do with “trusting Americans?”
Why yes. Notice that the average American Citizen is the only one being restricted in all these cases. The government, however, is absolved of that burden. It is because government doesn’t trust its people.

“When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” – Thomas Jefferson

Folks, I am going to give it to you brutally straight. Before I do, I will preface this by saying I am a retired combat vet with over 20 years in the army and considered by all who know me to be extremely right of center. Here is my perspective minus any of my typical hyperbole, sarcasm, and emotion:

I have a son and a son-in law that are veterans of both Afghanistan and Iraq. They are leaders. Based on my discussions with them and the tactical environment, we are in a tenuous partnership with the Afghani military. Because of corruption, insurgent infiltration of their ranks, we have to balance security with our mission to train and equip them. The decision to disarm our marines is not that we do not trust them but because we do not trust the Afghni military. Although there are serious trust issues, we still must train, equip and partner with them. In order to maintain an already strained relationship, we had to disarm our marines along with the Afghani military that were present. In my opinion as a combat leader, this was appropriate. Trust me when I say that only the Marines and Afghani military that were in the tent were disarmed. We still maintain armed base security outside the secure area. I agree with the decision and feel that it is being spun be the press.

Lt Col Cowan is entitled to his assessment, but I respectfully disagree with him as I do not see a trust problem with our Marines. God bless our warriors and watch over them! God bless our nation!

Its OK for the Afghan soldiers which our troops are supposed to trust (but do NOT) to stay armed so they can KILL AMERICAN SOLDIERS but when an American Politician shows up – Afghan and American troops have to be disarmed.

Why not JUST disarm the Afghan soldiers? Too politically incorrect.

“Why not JUST disarm the Afghan soldiers? Too politically incorrect.”

As vets, we both know that we do not have the luxury of questioning why we are there until our men are back home. As a combat leader, I would never undermine the Rules of Engagement that are in place although I believe that they have resulted in additional casualties due to our soldiers hesitation on the trigger and not wanting to be the next days news story demanding they be tried for war crimes. I have a son and son-in law that are combat vets. I did not put thoughts in their head that would cause doubt. I did tell them to follow the ROE when is reasonable, but never hesitate on the trigger as they will not be accountable for mistakes no matter how the media spins it.

It does not matter how corrupt the Afghani’s are. I do not ever see that changing. The fact is, after Panetta leaves, we still have to deal with the reality of the strained relationship and I always temper my leadership decisions with laser focus on the mission, then on my team. If disarming both the marines and Afghani soldiers will mean one less dead American, then it is worth it. We know the reality. Whenever we train Afghan soldier with live ammo, we now have armed over watch to ensure one of them do not turn on us as they have in the past. I see the sense in the order. Frankly, in a way I have to agree with Melvin. We mostly see this when there is a Democrat administration though it has happened under President Bush too. I recall when Carter came to Ft Bragg in ‘77 the MPs posted in dress greens along his travel route had .45s but no rounds. Any military installation that Clinton or Gore visited the same disarming of the troops occurred. I do recall seeing photographs of U.S. troops early on in Afghanistan and Iraq with their M16s and M4s obviously missing their magazines during visits by Bush, or Rumsfeld. The Secret Service can get pretty quirky understandably, and make some unusual sounding demands.

Understand that what makes our military the strongest on this planet is that we are highly trained professionals. When the bullets are flying, I cannot have any one on my team disobey my orders because someone got it into his head that it is wrong. Just as we absolutely do not agree with the ROE, we still follow orders. We are not a 3rd world military that is undisciplined. I don’t know if you can understand the importance of discipline. I, like Melvin am a 25 year retired Army Combat Veteran. Neither your Oath Keepers or your “If we followed the Constitution” rant address the Professional Military” point that Melvin raises. The oath of enlistment that all Soldiers swear or affirm too is superior to and completely sufficient for the duty our military men and women are volunteering themselves for.
It is your Responsibility to elect the civilians that have constitutional oversight on our Soldiers leaders. If you see a constitutional issue with any mission our military is engaged in, then speak up, to your representatives, and vote for those who’s foreign policies you think will adhere to the Constitution.
      The responsibility of our active duty fellow Americans is to;
“Do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
I don’t see the necessity for your oath, and it would lead to conflicts of loyalty and the erosion of “Good order and discipline” which is the bedrock of military unit cohesion.

The German Wehrmacht and the Prussian officer core swore a blood oath of obedience until death to Hilter….The deal was brokered in hopes of keeping Hilter in check by eliminating the SA arm of his movement in exchange for the German Armys loyalty. The Prussian officer core thought they took out the most dangerous aspect of the Nazi party by having Hilter eliminate the SA, which he did, by his own order. The “Night of the Long Knives” was the round up of all the SA leadership and the quick execution of most of them. The SA disbanded, the German Army felt reasonably secure against a Party and a bodyguard (the SS) that was very very small in number.

Thanks for your perspective and thank you and your family for your service. To follow up on your point, as I understand it, the worry may have been that an Afghan soldier could grab a weapon away from a US soldier and begin firing. This has been known to happen in Afghanistan.

If ordered by your CIC to shoot American citizens, would you? Would you disarm them? Do you consider this particular CIC legitimate?

O’Reilly once said the majority of his staff were liberals – duh. That explains how O’Reilly went from being a true conservative years ago to being “nudged” by hiring a liberal staff over the years and their influence on him.

OReilly stays on top of ratings because for every conservative he loses, he picks up a liberal. All I know is O’Reilly kisses Obama behind a lot and that sucking motion can be heard around the nation. True conservatives were disgusted in 2008 when he had Obama on during the Republican Convention.

It is only been recently that O‘Reoilly has been going after Obama because Bill realizes Obama is going to raise O’Reilly‘s taxes again way past the thousands of dollars in charity tax writes off O’Reilly gets to off set his millions in income. I don‘t watch O’Reilly any longer and I miss Freedom Watch. Fox is in the tank for Romney and Judge Napalitano harpooned Romney and the other RINOs and liberals every night on his show. Now there are re-runs of Dobbs and the Willis Report. Dick Asman’s show was great also. Fox Business stinks now. Hannity is the only show on Fox News that is decent. O’Reilly = biased and in the tank for Romney. Van Susteran = watered down news show but at least she is not biased towards any candidates. And last year they canned Glen Beck’s show the best show ever.

And, if you agree with any of those 11 points – you are a pinhead.

When Panetta leaves, the Marines and Afghans all go back to being armed and it will only be days before we here of another Afghan turning Jihadist and killing another Marine or Soldier !!

Democrats and this administration both hate and fear the military and will do anything in their power to dismantle it, i.e. all the cuts to military spending including their health care. Obama and the liberals know that this revolution the progressives and communists keep talking about, that I believe is coming soon, will pit them against the military and all armed citizenry. You dont have to guess who will be the losers. Better to start now making up ways to disarm them so that in the future it wont be questioned. To answer your question: The military are the oath keepers and their civilian masters are oath breakers. If one cannot keep their oath to protect and defend the Constitution they are “domestic” enemies and are right to fear their own military.
