Megyn Kelly Confronts AZ Sheriff Over ‘Political Spin’ on Shooting

Did “vitriol” and political rhetoric really drive a 22-year-old gunman to murder in Arizona?
On Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik seemed to suggest as much during a news conference recapping the day’s horrific events.
“I think the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business and what (we) see on TV and how our youngsters are being raised, that this has not become the nice United States of America that most of us grew up in. And I think it’s time that we do the soul-searching,” the sheriff said.
Sheriff Dupnik repeated his assertions Sunday when he delivered remarks in an afternoon press conference with FBI director Mueller and during an afternoon interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly. Free speech has “consequences,” he said.
When Megyn Kelly questioned whether a law enforcement official like Dupnik should insert their personal opinions into an investigation, Dupnik doubled down:
A number of liberal politicians have applauded Dupnik for expressing his personal opinions so openly while in front of the cameras.
“The sheriff out there in Tucson, I think he’s got it right,” Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the assistant minority whip, told “Fox News Sunday.“ ”Words do have consequences. And I think that we have to really — this is nothing new. I’ve been saying this for a long time now.”
“I think the sheriff was right,” added Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., who appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“Far too many broadcasts now and so many outlets have the intent of inciting, and inciting people to opposition, to anger, to thinking the other side is less than moral. And I think that is a context in which somebody who is mentally unbalanced can somehow feel justified in taking this kind of action,” Hoyer said. :And I think we need to all take cognizance of that and be aware that what we say can, in fact, have consequences.”

America doesn’t need protectors of the piece like this biased cop who openly admits to being democratic and is obviously pushing his personal agenda. The democrats should be honest about who the shooter is and what his honest goals were. But passonate disagreement with democrat policies that are going to ruin our country should never be brought into this tragedy.

I can only assume that you have a “smartest person in the room” issue. Good luck with that. Why are leftist so sure that there’s nothing out there for them to learn and that they have all the answers, yet they will do all but cause themselves harm to avoid a truth that does not fit into the reality they’ve created? And how can the “smartest person in the room” leftist with all the answers be so devoid of intellectual honesty? Tell me, do you cheat at solitaire and tell yourself you won too??
I mean really? You went on and on defending Obama’s “bring a gun to a knife fight” statement and how it was a metaphor, blah, blah, blah, but then immediately turned around and condemned Palin’s “reload” statement which is exactly the same thing isn’t it?
Report Post »Porkeater
Posted on January 11, 2011 at 12:22amLadybugstx – you misunderstand me, but God love ya too. In the comment you’re responding to, i made note of the fact that Orkydorky chose to insult rather than even consider the point i was making. At least you have gone further. It was not my intention to defend the President, rather to point out that a certain argument was based on a falsehood. It’s very difficult to have a discussion when folk are so prickly about the slightest criticism or deviation from doctrine. Also when blanket assumptions are treated as truth.
Example: you assumed i have some “smartest person” complex, and within two sentences you were pushing it as fact. Along with which, you assumed much about my political views that you could never know from a couple posts.
As for eagerness to learn, you should know that it‘s possible to learn even from a person you don’t agree with. Or a child. Or a fool. If i am one of these, you can still learn if you choose not to be so hostile. I learn a great deal here, even if i don’t know if i agree with much of it. If you take that as me considering myself “better” or “smarter” than anybody, i advise you to be less insecure about your ignorance. Or perhaps, less proud of it.

Posted on January 9, 2011 at 9:30pm“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” President Obama never said that, it was Senator Obama. Same person, but not ex cathedra from the WH. Analyze it. He’s saying, the best way to win is to have a better weapon than your opponent. Not as incendiary as, say, “pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp”.
Orkydorky: “wasn‘t it Obama that said Fox news was racist and wasn’t a valid news source, and that the Tea partiers were racists and promoted violence?” Not entirely true. He hasn’t said that either FOX or the tea party was racist, nor that the latter promoted violence. And, in neither case is the remark in quite the same vein as: “don’t retreat, reload”.

Based on the Sheriff’s words, the most likely scenario here is that the shooter and Sheriff planned this event as a “FALSE FLAG” attack, wherein the shooter would commit the crime and the Sheriff would act as propagandist by accusing a targeted enemy (conservatives) of being responsible.

Posted on January 9, 2011 at 10:21pmWALK,
With all due respect, I would have to disagree. To say that this incident had no Political Intent is to be intelectually naive, if not downright dishonest. He did TARGET a SPECIFIC POLITICAL figure(s) engaged in POLITICAL activities, in a very PUBLIC situation. He didn’t shoot just anybody that happened to be available randomly. All the earmarks of POLITICAL ASSASINATION are present in this. Whether he came from the left against the right or vice versus, he definitely intended to make a statement of POLITICAL DISATISFACTION in the strongest terms there are available.
And, matter not how deranged or mentally unstable he was, he still had the presence of mind and clarity of thought, to plan and execute his mission quite dramatically and successfully. It is also very obvious that he spent little effort and time on planning his escape. Odds are he knew he would be caught, and that didn’t bother him so very much. I would wager that he really wants a platform to speak from about his beliefs etc. and that we will hear quite alot from him. That assuming of course, the FEDs don’t “Arrange” for him to become unexpectedly ABSOLUTELY SILENT.
Don’t bet on that “not” happening, unless you have extra cash to throw away.

DO THEY NOT REALIZE THAT SUCH COMMENTS ARE JUST MAKING THE DIVISION WORSE!
We are not even two days into this and these people can be SO definitive about this guys motives? Common sense tells us we can’t know much about this guy yet. EVERYONE needs to stop pointing the fingers. The shooter, himself, is the ONLY one to be blamed right now.
FURTHER- should it turn out that this guy was incited by one political party or another does not mean we should curtail free speech, censor speech, or abstain from political discourse. A LOT of people are VERY angry at particular politicians right now, but not all are acting out violently.
BUT- again, making definitive statements (when none should made this early) as to blaming a particular political party only divides us that much more. I have not seen (as of yet) one shred of evidence that conclusively relates this shooter with the left or the right- period.

Apparently just another hypocrite, except I think he is simply using this event to stifle the freedom of speach of those who hold opinions that differ from his. For instance, I think people involved with the Tea Party Movement are true patriots who love this country and love our Constitution. I think Steny does not trust Americans and does not trust the Constitution to guide America in today’s day and age. And he‘d make sure I can’t say that anymore. I‘ve looked around at the blogs and can’t believe the continued hate being spewed over on CNN by its “believers.” Anytime CNN runs an article mentioning Sarah Palin, the Haters come out in droves. Today, they manage to blame Sarah Palin for not only these murders and injuries, but for all else that ails our country. But Americans everyday are subjected to being murdered at the hands of paroled killers and rapists, cops are getting killed almost on a monthly basis and rapes, violent robberys daily in this country and the level of concern is not even half of what I am witnessing at this moment regarding this attempted assasination and the killings of others who even now seem to be less than the Congresswoman herself (no fault of hers).
Where is the outrage about innocents being killed in this country weekly and excuses being that the killers were victims themselves like the Budweiser Beer thief who mowed down several workers? Cowards who hide behind their positions that represent the people who they now fear. What a disaster!! Now new laws will be forth coming to provide ALL of US with more socalled protections by limiting our freedoms once again because a one oddball occurance like this that affects THEM alone. SO….all of these problems we are having since he grew up are because of hateful Republicans blocking progress. Got it! So he stirs the pot with false assumptions for the people to chew on and ponder who are these haters. Talk about demonizing your enemies. I will contend this very man and his high intellectual thinking on how this country got into such bad such is actually a very big part of the problems this country finds itself. He is an apologist for criminals because he pulls the card that sez they were incited to violence and therefore not in their own right minds so not fully responsible for their actions. Got it. This gets worse every time I flip open the screen.
Kudos to Megan for exposing his thinking and to allow him to double down on his position. I wish she had asked him for examples since he was so brave to stand by his assertions. Who is inciting, what were the words they used, when, where and what other crimes have been tied to their recklessness on the airwaves? Where is the proof? Even for liberal law inforcement officials you don’t see that very often. I remember the Kennedy assassination and I don’t recall anying interviewed officer behaving like this dude.
And who is fermenting the violence Glenn, Rush, or Piven?
Generalities are the pablum of the liberal media? True/False
The truth is in the specifics of conservative talk radio (usually based on sound bites and common sense…not second hand information)?
True/False
So is it the sound bites that are being reported stiring folks up or the reporter?
Can the sherif make that distinction?
How come he knows so much about talk radio (NOT!) but on Kelly’s further probing about the heroic woman interdicting with the gunman, the sherif was not in command of the details? Isn’t that his job as an investigator to have that all down cold?
It seems that with every question Megyn had for specifics the sherif looked like a deer in the headlights and for the most part sounded evasive. Not very impressive!
Sounds more like a defensive politician to me and not a professional law inforcement representative.
Who wants to bet that the woman was a conservative? Or that the other person being threatened earlier by the madman was also a conservative? I‘ll bet you down the road we’ll know that is the real story and that this dufus is intentionally trying to put a liberal spin on the situation.
If so, shame on him.

make them say the names of the people to the names of the networks they are recklessly talking about
Sheriff Dupnik has an ethical if nothing else an obligation as a Law Enforcement Officer to speak to the facts!

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 8:22ammrbutcher is correct in this instance. The killer is insane and it is not Sarah Palin’s fault for using register marks (not gun sights) on her campaign poster. However, as I have been writing on The Blaze for the past few weeks, Beck’s rhetoric, and the hot-tempered knee-jerk reaction to my fair criticism of it from many Blaze bloggers, is paranoid and irresponsible. It hurst the conservative cause, as I’ve said time and again here. Now everyone can see why. The media is spinning this event into an attack on conservatives like Palin and the Tea Party movement, exactly as I feared. I‘ve been warning my contacts in the political arena about this and now it’s here. The hostile reaction that you Beckites sent my way for merely raising a question regarding whether or not the killer was influenced by Beck’s fear mongering, end of days, conspiracy-laced rhetoric is a perfect example of how wound up, locked and loaded much of Beck’s audience is. Maybe it’s time now finally for Glenneth to dial it back on his search for a commie behind every potted plant in the White House and his tales of social collapse, mayhem and the imminent arrival of God here in the US.

And I think its time that we do the soul-searching,” the sheriff said.
Well, Sheriff lets start in Hollywood with the “insightful” (?) or inciting violent filled movies that are put out for our children to watch do you want to start there? Cable TV maybe?
the SEIU will have lawyers on that in a NEW YORK minute
Well, then why not start with the lyrics in RAP MUSIC then ?
Should they also be arrested for inciting violence thru their lyrics?
The SEIU lawyers will be all over that one as well
Or maybe we should start in the churches with the racists hateful rants of Rev Wright and Louis Farrakhan?
How about restricting Jay Z from the White House simply because of the lyrics he writes
are they insightful or are they inciting … where do we START?
Should we ban RAP music for inciting violence because of the extremely violent lyrics?
Sheriff Dupnik where do we start with “your” slippery slope of “justice”?

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 9:48amThere is no doubt the shooter was disturbed. Nevertheless the written material that he read influenced his behavior. What this nation needs to consider now is: how do we humanly institutionalize dangerous individuals who have the potential to harm members of our society? If an effective system had been in place prior to this incident his mental problems would have been identified and treated years ago.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:09amI do not believe that you can tie this kind of act to any particular pundit or politicians, no matter how vitriolic their rhetoric might be. It is impossible to do so statistically. That being said, there are hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on advertising on radio, televions and in even in placement ads in movies and video games. The people who deploy this money are not stupid. They are highly rational and careful individuals who know that they can choreograph images that help sell their products. So to argue that the vitriol has no impact on inciting people to violence is naive, and for Kelly to speak of “speculation” is also incorrect. The costs of such vitriolic rhetoric, whether on the left of the right, should be assumed to contribute, albeit in a small and unquantifiable way, and that alone–given the obvious precious cost–should be enough to lead people to cool it. Never mind that such rhetoric also impedes the ability of two parties to sit down and work together productively, never mind that such rhetoric causes people to make ad hominem arguments rather than focusing on the fact and issues, and never mind that it has brought out the worst of people in their daily interractions with others. This event should give everyone pause. Just because you cannot quantify exactly what the causal link is, doesn‘t mean that there isn’t one. Just as the racist rhetoric of the South in the 50s could make it easy to dehumanize and lynch or murder black men, so can the ideological rhetoric of today make it easier for someone to assassinate a liberal, Jewish Congresswoman in a red state. Either you are a tiny bit of the problem, or you are a tiny bit of the solution. And unless being conservative or Republican now inherently stands for violent rhetoric–which I do not believe it does–Megyn Kelly should not view the sheriff’s comments as being political at all. He likely would be making the same case if AZ were a blue state and the victim on the assassination attempt were a member of the GOP. If we are so preprogrammed to characterize even murder and death as inherently political, then we have lost our collective and individual minds.
Of course, it could be that the rational, calculating minds that are so good at controlling image, are simply trying to protect theirs. And Megyn Kelly, well paid as she likely is, is also protecting her own. That is merely my wild speculation, but there have been no introspective comments examining the role of vitriolic rhetoric anywhere amongst the more fiery Fox pundits, and therefore that speculation will continue to be fueled.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:16amBut for all the scolding from the Megyn Kellys about pointing fingers and finding blame in the wake of a tragedy, I’d like to see how conservatives will hold true to that the next time some kid shoots up his high school or a Muslim bombs a public gathering. Maybe they’ll just recognize the terrorist as mentally unstable and beyond mere influence. Or maybe they’ll go back to the same old routine of blaming non-christian religion, democrats, video games, or rock and roll.

I am a long time FoxNews fan and have been appalled how the network has allowed so much crap to be “shared” on this shooting. All of our news stations need to be ashamed of themselves for this kind of reporting.
One can only hope that our new House of Representatives will be able to start asking the right questions to get out in public some major concerns; the people our president has surrounded himself with, the circumvention of our congress to take more unconstitutional control of our country, how congress can accept the process of not allowing debate and not even time to read a bill before voting on it, voter fraud, how much has been paid to unions and why, why are gas prices so high, just to name a few.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 11:50amMegyn Kelly calls out the sheriff for speculation, but Kelly herself is speculating about the mental state of the killer Jared Loughner. It is a politically expedient response in this context for a conservative like Kelly to assume that this is the random act of violence from a mad man, but that is also speculation. We will see how much truth is eventually revealed, but do not believe only one side is spinning this. Both sides are making political calculations all of the time.
But as long as a rational marketplace, worth billions of dollars, spends money on advertisements, it will be impossible to argue that what the pundits on Fox or on MSNBC say has no impact on people in society, including Loughner.

And I wonder how it is your “first inclination” was to blame a far-right tea partier? Could you please explain why it is that you think this way? Has there ever been any violence produced by this group? No.
Now my “first inclination” that it was a nutjob from the far-left who believe that anything from slander to personal destruction to violence is justified was more spot on. And why do I think that way? The Austin, Texas pilot that flew into the IRS building, a leftist, the school board shooter who opened fire during a school board meeting, a leftist, G20 millions in damage, leftist, bombing Federal buildings, leftists, beatings at town hall meetings, leftists, What’s even sadder, leftist groups like SDS, unions, etc. actually encourage violence. Sorry, but this blood is in the hands of the left.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 8:59amABC, the “science” you present, is pretty lame. A presenter who does not provide his credentials, and simply provides his opinion of research. When you do manage to get the paper he was summarizing, you find the usual guessing and it is filled with words like “may,“ ”might,“ ”could,“ ”seems to,” and etc. And nowhere is the research data presented for others to be able to reproduce such “results” or determine if the research was done following valid scientific methodology. In essence, ABC, keep reading, but keep your skepticism alarms up. Don’t present such stuff as proven research, when even the authors will generally state their constraints and hold that “more research is necessary” and they caution people not to draw conclusions from such inconclusive, one-time research.
